Japan Housing Websites (part two)

Want to move to Japan? Me too! A while ago, I made a post with some key vocabulary for navigating Japanese real estate websites. This time, I'd like to highlight vocabulary that will help you refine the search results until you find the perfect house.

After selecting the property type and narrowing down the area to search, you'll eventually be presented with a list of houses. Here's a convenient link to a list of houses in Tokyo so you can follow along: TOKYO(SUUMO)

Search & Sort Functions

The orange number at the top of the screen tells you how many total properties were found with your search.

The upper options all have to do with displaying the search results.

通常（つうじょう）表示（ひょうじ）：Regular Display シンプル　一覧（いちらん）表示：Simple Summary Display 地図（ちず）で　表示：Display with Map 表示　件数（けんすう）：Display Item Number

Below that, we have the options to sort the results. 並び替え（ならびかえ）：Rearrange 指定（してい）なし：No Designation

Click the drop-down to see all the different sorting methods, which I've translated below with my best attempts to maintain readability.

新着（しんちゃく）更新（こうしん）：Newly Updated

To the right of the house list, you'll see a thin section that will allow for more general filters to refine your search.

絞り込み（しぼりこみ）条件（じょうけん）：Refine Conditions

Under this section are a few familiar words: Price (価格), Land Area (土地面積), and Building Area (建物面積). Below each section is the same two drop-down options:

下限（かげん）なし：No Min Limit 上限（じょうげん）なし：No Max Limit

The drop down will let you set the minimum and maximum value for each section. For example: ５００万円以上（いじょう）〜１０００万円未満（みまん） Above 5 million yen 〜 Below 10 million yen

The next section deals with the amount of rooms in the house.

間取り（まどり）：Layout 1K/DK/LDK：1 bedroom houses (plus a kitchen (K), or a kitchen + dining room (DK), or a kitchen + dining room + living room (LDK))

Because public transit is so common in Japan, you also have the option to choose how far away from a train station your house is.

駅（えき）徒歩（とほ）：Station Walk In the drop down, you can select the maximum distance in minutes you'd like to be located from a station. １０分　以内（いない）：Within 10 minutes

バス　含む（ふくむ）：Include Bus Stations Some rural locations might be far away from train stations, so you can select this option here to include bus stations as well!

He's a lil more chill--most of the excitement for him is because Leo's causing him trouble, so maybe there won't be as many since it's just him? (Spoiler: i still put nearly all of them, or it feels that way. . . .)

Chirashizushi is sushi ingredients cut into small pieces and scattered over sushi rice! It comes in a lot of variation and isn't always made with raw fish like you might expect sushi to be.

Sho really knows a little about everything huh. He cuts his own hair, he memorizes textbooks, he plays every sport, he can cook. . .is there anything Sho can't do? In his character story he even says he played guitar for a little while but hasn't done it lately, so music is probably within his wheelhouse too.

which one. . .i mean if it was Luca he was probably training, but if it was Kaito. . .idk what Kaito would be doing out in the river by himself. . .I know it wasn't Jin but if it was Tohma maybe it was some official business. . .? Or, y'know, spy stuff. . . .

I'm beginning to suspect that he heavily values freedom and being able to go where he wants and do what he wants. That includes taking you wherever you wanna go. Even at max affinity he has the same response--'we're going somewhere, anywhere you want.' At max affinity he doesn't mention an R&R permit--which suggests he doesn't care if you get in trouble going out, as long as you actually get to go out. One of the first things we see him talking about relating to Darkwick is asking Leo if he regrets going--I think Sho regrets it. He can't leave whenever he wants, even though he's one of the top students as far as grades, he's more restricted in what he's allowed to do and when. . .so I think these offers to drive you anywhere in total freedom are his ways of showing you what means the most to him. Just. . .being able to do whatever, whenever. I think that's also part of why he likes Leo so much. Leo doesn't let himself be restricted either. Leo gets into fights and into trouble and Sho complains about it but he understands the liberation. Sho wants to see that unrestricted you, I think. Even if it isn't anything extreme, even if it isn't anything exciting. He wants to see what you're like out of Darkwick's cage. So he'll take you on little joyrides into freedom. Show him where you go and what you do when no one's there to stop you.

Your birthday (Year 2):

I'm surprised Leo's wasn't similar to this tbh. Like, Leo's an influencer, why didn't he mention getting a metric fuckton of valentine's day chocolate? I'm happy Sho's loved by the students tho haha.

White Day: (March 14th)

I STILL FEEL LIKE I CHOSE A BUNCH THIS ONE IS ALSO ALL OF THEM NOW . . .Sho is pretty lowkey. But after rereading them all and giving it some thought, you can definitely get a feel for his character. He seems like he keeps busy a lot--he's always doing something. Cooking, playing sports, reading, memorizing his textbooks. . .he's confident and comfortable and sometimes he's a bit rough around the edges. And sometimes he's a little flirty too, if he likes you. But that's all part of how confident and self-assured he is--and he has plenty of reason to be when he's so smart and skilled at damn near everything he touches. He acts more like the senpai character here. He's a lot like Haku, except where Haku is a bit lazier and less motivated(although he still works hard) Sho is always on the go. Always up to something, always trying something. He likes to keep busy and doesn't like to sit still--to the point that he even considers going to class when he's got nothing to do during the day. He wakes up and has nothing to do? Let's call Leo, he's usually got something going on. He complains about Alan making him work out so much or go to the pit or play basketball real hard? I don't know why the localization decided to make Chihiro a toxic lady, but in the original, she acts completely differently.

If you're having a feeling of deja-vu, it's because I revamped an older post (I swear I tried to edit it but it wouldn't let me!). The song translation was reworked and I added to the initial notes. If you've seen the old version of this post, I recommend you give it another watch! As usual, translation notes and commentary are under the cut. While not spoiling either Ninmyu 12 or the Strongest Tactician, I'll refer to both, so again if you want to watch them completely blind be careful.

Amako Soubee has written a number of songs for the Nintama franchise, both for the anime and the musicals, and this is one of them. While Nintama TV anime uses Japanese that is easy to follow, Ninmyu is something else entirely, and this song is a good example of that difference in language. It uses archaisms and takes from classical poetry, so I had a hard time translating the first time I tackled it. I really, really love this song though and it's been on my mind since I shared my first attempt at a translation, so for months I've been going back and forth editing it. Unlike a number of songs from Ninmyu, I couldn't find any written lyrics online (but they are apparently written in the pamphlet for the musical! I looked and looked but I don't think anyone attempted to put a version online, so I guess I'll share my transcription.), so it wasn't a work of just checking a word I don't know in the dictionary and fill in the spots, I started by writing a good chunk of it phonetically and look up the constructions, expressions and words I didn't know... haha. Needless to say this was a text above my humble level of Japanese. But it was interesting! And I regret having rushed the first time I translated it... but I'm glad I gave it another try. Plus, this time I've had Tome read over my transcription of the Japanese lyrics and confirm them (thank you sooo much!), so I'm all the more confident in what I'm sharing today. Yay!

Now, on to some translation notes and commentary:

Yogiri (夜霧), the name Nue gave Hansuke before he was Hansuke, means "night fog". Doi (土井) is spelled with the characters 土 "earth" and 井 "well", or "community" (as people gathers around the well in a town). Another alias of his, Tenki (天鬼), is spelled with the characters 天 "sky", "heaven", and 鬼 "demon", "ogre", "oni". I think it's interesting that two of his aliases, Yogiri and Tenki, are linked to intangible concepts, while "Doi" feels definitely palpable and rooted in every day life. It's beautiful, isn't it?

Nue (鵺) got her name from nue, a chimera-like beast in Japanese folklore.

He who doesn't dare cross a 1-jou moat, Should not strive to cross a 1.5-jou moat. They literally say a "1 jou moat" and a "1 jou and 5 shaku moat", but I didn't want to make the text too heavy. Jou (丈) is an unit of measure that is approximately equal to 3 meters in length. Shaku (尺) is another unit of measure that is approximately equal to 30 centimeters. So 1 jou is equal to 10 shaku, and 1 jou and a half is equal to 1 jou and 5 shaku.

Hansuke Shunjuu (半助春秋) Literally, Hansuke's Spring and Autumn. An expression used in the sense of, the life and times of Hansuke, the highs and lows of Hansuke, but because the song directly references spring and autumn, I guess the title can be translated literally! Following that idea, the stanza about spring evokes a high point for Doi and the very picture of peace to him, while the long nights of autumn remind him of darker times. Incidentally, isn't it interesting how The Strongest Tactician takes place in autumn? Well, I'm not going to ramble about it all over again, but if you want to read about my thoughts on Doi's character, The Strongest Tactician, and how this song fits into it all, there's a big block of text waiting for you here.

The song uses a lot literary constructions and words that wouldn't make for very interesting explanations given my own lack of knowledge on Japanese literature and poetry. But there's a basic notion that might be fun to bring up, and it's 季語 kigo, or seasonal words. As the name imply, they are words whose function is to indicate the season referred to within a poem or the stanza of a poem. There are entire dictionaries dedicated to them, and some are more obvious than others... I feel they are not only essential to Japanese poetry, they are also good to know when interacting with any Japanese art, including visual arts and even anime. Again, taking The Strongest Tactician as an example, visual motifs in this movie include the moon and pampa grass among many others, two kigo associated with autumn. Let's list some big ones present in the lyrics.

Warm spring day 春の野 haru no no, "spring field", "calm fields of spring", our first kigo, and it's an explicit one even to non-Japanese speakers. When spring comes, snow melts, flowers bloom, and the spring field gains color with each passing day. Mugwort here refers to 蓬 yomogi, the Japanese mugwort, primarily used to make sweets with, notably (and relevant to the time period) kusamochi, yomogi leaves mixed with glutinous rice to make sweet, green dumplings. Kusamochi was offered during hinamatsuri, a holiday celebrating girls, and was eaten wishing for the good health of mothers and children. すみれ草咲く野辺をとつおいつ sumiresou saku nobe wo totsuoitsu, "She wanders and lingers in violet-dotted fields", or more literally "She goes back and forth in the field where violets bloom" The violets here are likely viola mandshurica, a wildflower largely mentioned and celebrated in poetry.

Long autumn night 弓箭は埋もれて kyuusen wa uzumorete "Remnants of battle lie buried" It's not a kigo but I want to point it out, 弓箭 kyuusen is literally "bow and arrow", but obviously evokes remnants of a past battle here. It's not just "insects" but specifically "the cries of insects" that are a kigo. Which insect isn't specified, but it could be a number of them, as some specific insects and their cry are associated with autumn. I guess the first that comes to mind to me is the bell cricket, or suzumushi. You can listen to its very distinct sound here (I picked a video without visuals if you don't like seeing critters up close) 月は語る tsuki wa kataru "The moon speaks" Like I said before, the moon is an autumn word. To be associated with tsukimi, or the moon-viewing celebrations that come with the harvest moon in autumn. Also, 語る kataru is to be understood as to speak out loud, to tell, to reveal, to announce.

Kaentake Castle カエンタケ kaentake, poison fire coral, a deadly poisonous mushroom. Also spelled 火炎茸, lit "flame mushroom", hence the red accents on their outfits.

The relationships in the police department are a jumbled mess <3. Starting with Takagi and Sato, Yumi and Shuukichi, Shiratori and Ms. Kobayashi. Chiba and Naeko, Megure and Midori… Amuro and Azusa? (lol), etc…

Among them, there is only one unfolding outside of Tokyo. Nagano Prefectural Police's Yamato Kansuke and Uehara Yui. Actually, Yui was a culprit!(lol).

When I came up with her name based on the fictional names('Yuu hime' and 'Ko-i hime') of Takeda Shingen's beloved wife, Suwa Goryōnin, I felt like "I want to make her the heroine of this case…" So, I quickly adjusted the dialogues. (While the assistants were sleeping. It took 2 hours.(lol))

When I showed the completed draft of first chapter to the editor in charge saying "This character is no longer the culprit…", The editor was like "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-t?!" This really happened. (lol) For this reason, Yui looked like the culprit until the end. (Well, naturally. She was supposed to be, at first.) I personally think it ended up really good.

Since she became the heroine, I put in the intense romcom with kansuke. When I added the strategist, Mofurushi Taka'aki, apparently Nagano Prefectural Police became the strongest. (tl: The word for 'strong' is the one used for strong coffee.)

If Kuroda stayed in Nagano at that state, justice would have been served even without Conan.

Here is a little preview of what chapter 109 of Mahoutsukai no Yome tells us (at the beginning, page 1 to 5). Take into account that I am self-studying Japanese (it was a great exercise) and I don't know if I will translate the other pages before the 14th. Small bonus at the end (spoiler not very spoiler…)

As the title says, this will be a translation of all* Win & Lose quotes involving Fanny from Guilty Petit and Guilty Gear Petit 2.

(*Except for the mirror match quote, if one exists, because it looks like you can’t get a proper mirror match in single player.)

I thought these would be interesting to know about, since they’re pretty much the only characterization Fanny gets outside of the Petit 1 & 2 story modes, plus getting to see a bit of how the other characters react to her.

Some more things to note before we get started:

Characters who appear in both Petit 1 and 2 have identical Win and Loss quotes in both games.

The final roster also includes four “GG” characters: GG Sol Badguy, GG May, GG Millia Rage, and GG Ky Kiske.

These four characters are essentially their base form counterparts, but with an alternate moveset inspired by the first Guilty Gear game. They are given different color schemes to differentiate them in gameplay, but they are effectively treated like they are the same characters, even though they have separate quotes and story modes.

The only exception is GG Ky Kiske, who is actually Robo-Ky!

Finally, in terms of status-quo, the characters are roughly plucked from around the Guilty Gear X era - for example Dizzy is part of the Jellyfish Pirates, but Zato-1 hasn’t fully passed away yet (but is still controlled by Eddie.)

Though the stories of these games are really more on the humorous side.

Obviously likening nurses to angels is a thing in English too, but I still wanted to explain the details here.)

Note that there is no description of the characters' actions here (in the localization, Phoenix *shuddered* when talking about a possible repeat purchase). It's a nice addition, but the emotion is a bit off.

In the original, Naruhodō pauses a lot when he says this sentence, and also uses the word なあ (nā), which at the end of a sentence means "I wish", "I would like" and emphasize personal desires. So he literally sighs with relief when he finds out that Minuki's expensive props have been found. So if you're going to add an action, you should use "sigh".

And Odoroki reacts a little differently. He doesn't accuse the man of being stingy, but is surprised that this is probably due to some financial problems. Plus, かよ at the end of a sentence expresses doubt (か + よ), so Odoroki is simply making an assumption, rather than criticizing non-existent stinginess.

Now think for a second what a missed opportunity this was. Especially considering Odoroki's reaction to this appeal (I was misunderstood!)

The spelling of the words is the same, the reading is different; where is the probability that this is not a huge irony and the creators really did not intend this situation?

The first meeting with an idol, and such an awkward situation, because of your mantra, there is a misunderstanding when they hear you shouting at the entire lobby that you are a "great man". Here, you can immediately dig a grave on the spot. In any case, both options have the right to exist.

I don't understand why, but the localization has a lot of changed sentences that do not preserve the character and emotions of the characters. And in some moments they also cause confusion. For example, the reaction of detective Hozuki (Ema Skye) to Minuki Naruhodō is changed in such a way that it changes the character's motivation and makes a hole in the plot regarding the icon with a screaming face. So, welcome to the: “Knuckle Kid Knockout” Process! This project/collab will focus on creating an Alternate Dimension (Universe) where everyone in the first original Mega Man series will be humanoid Kickboxers/MMA fighters. This idea was highly inspired by one art piece made by a Twittex (Twitter/X) user named: Sweet_Ant (@Sweette59439603). -Each line of robots will be chosen by an individual where they will create messy concept art of how they would look as a Kickboxer/MMA fighter. -Once a line has been completed, results will be posted, showcasing the brainstorm of ideas. -I myself will keep these pictures, so that I can draw a full fledge design, incorporating the ideas that were given. -Once all lines of robots have been completed, I will continue moving forward with creating the story, and what will exactly happen in this alternate universe. -There is no due date. So, that gives plenty of time to put in enough mental and artistic effort!
