Trial 3 - Melting Temperature Voice Drama (Side-by-Side English Translation)
Google Docs version of this translation. If using/reuploading/reposting this translation, do not remove the translator's notes and do not change the translations. Credit and link if using. Any additional Translator's Notes will be found in the replies and/or Google Docs. (Transcript may not be accurate and action descriptions were added with discretion. It will all be updated when the Trial 3 script books are released.) This is technically an interpretation (translation of an auditory source) translated into text. Check the original post before reblogging as TLs are occasionally revisited and edited.
YUNO: Warden-san? ES: You’re the first in the Third Trial. YUNO: Yep, that’s right. It feels kinda weird. HARUKA’s not here… HARUKA… I’m sure that there was probably a choice for me to take to take care of HARUKA. But, for some reason… it felt like he was someone I wasn’t allowed to touch, because he was beautiful… and I’m… dirty. ES: I knew it was my fault… Just like MUU said… I knew it was going to turn out like this. YUNO: Maybe you did, maybe you didn’t. If you say stuff like that, maybe it’ll ease your mind a bit, heh… ES: Yeah… YUNO: Ah- I gotta stop bullying you! This is the last time we’re gonna have something like this after all… ES: You… always manage to strike where it hurts the most, you know. YUNO: Eh… I don’t think choosing to die is a good thing, of course, but… when I found out that kid died… I was kinda shaken. I’ve never found something so important that it’s worth throwing my life away for so… that’s why I thought HARUKA really was beautiful. ES: Beautiful? HARUKA?? YUNO: Mhm, yeah. That includes SHIDOU-san and MAHIRU-san too. They might be murderers but… they really were beautiful people. [T/N: 綺麗 (kirei) was deliberately interpreted-translated as "beautiful" instead of its alternative meanings of "pure/neat/clean". "Pure" and "clean" evokes imagery of total innocence which directly goes against what Yuno was asking Es/Wardens/You as its reductive, simplifying a person's complexities, ignoring their sins, emotions, and all. Whereas what is considered "beautiful" is subjective, unbound by external judgements within the truth of one's heart. YUNO saying "I'm... dirty" also seemed to be a better fit for as it can apply to staining whatever "beauty"/"beautiful" means- whether the qualifications for "beautiful" contain pureness or cleanness or being a person with a heart, being a person with emotions, convictions, etc. "Beautiful" in the context of sinners (囚人) retains the complexity of people that YUNO asks people to not reduce.] ES: I… don’t get it. I can’t see it- not yet, at least. YUNO: Are you sad? Warden-san? ES: Yeah, I am. They died and I’m sad. I don’t know what I should’ve done. YUNO: No one really does. You only get one shot at life after all, so I think you should enjoy it as much as you can. Besides, you’ve been with us all this time, Warden-san. You have the right to be sad at least.
ES breathes out shakily. ES: You’re being awfully kind. YUNO: I’m just being normal. ES: It’s a bit surprising. I’d thought you were the type to stay cool and unaffected no matter what happened. YUNO: Heh- Honestly, I thought so too. ES: What made you that way…? Was it because I kept on forgiving you? YUNO: Huh? Nah. That stuff never really mattered. ES: Heh… Of course you’d say that. You’re not even the kind of person worth being a Warden to. YUNO: It’s exactly because I have no intention of being the kind of girl you’d want to protect. ES: No doubt about that. YUNO: Right? ES: MAHIRU was… She’s the one who changed you. She was always looking out for you, wasn’t she? YUNO: Maybe. I don’t know if I’ve really changed. Maybe I just can’t bring myself to be cheery anymore… I was there with MAHIRU-san when she died, y’know? ES: I see. Thank you for being there. YUNO: No, not at all. I couldn’t do anything when SHIDOU-san died, I could only watch him get weaker… But, I yapped a lot with MAHIRU-san. MAHIRU-san loved to talk until the very end… MAHIRU-san was such a hopeless romantic… dreaming of love, wanting to be the bride of someone she loves, dreaming of raising a baby together. ES: I see. That sounds like MAHIRU. YUNO: You don’t really see people like that these days. …Seriously…it’s almost laughable- That baby a good person like her dreamed of… ended up inside someone like me instead. ES: YUNO… YUNO: Isn’t it kinda funny? The thing I killed… was the very thing MAHIRU-san wanted most in the world. So what if I was forgiven? It’s just so stupid. ES: …Then I’ll just go ahead and return the words you once told me. YUNO: Huh? ES: It’s okay to be sad. You don’t have to smile or laugh around either. YUNO: What are you saying? ES: You don’t have to laugh or smile. You don’t have to pretend to be cold. Even you… have the right to grieve. ユノ 「ない」 YUNO: I don’t.
ES: You were always with them… always talking together… Even if you’re both murderers… you were friends. YUNO: Friends? ES: I’ll say it again… You have the right to be sad. YUNO: Friends? Really? We didn’t even know who each other really was. ES: Ah… But it seemed that way to me. YUNO: No way… There’s no way… ES: There’s no need to hold it in. If something is sad, it’s okay to say it’s sad. YUNO: It’s not okay for me to be sad… I have no right to be sad!?!!! Why? I killed a baby. And I felt nothing when I did it. So how can I be sad now with HARUKA dying, SHIDOU-san dying, MAHIRU-san dying…? There’s no way I’m allowed to grieve. YUNO: There’s no way I have any right… I just- I get it, everything. Ever since I was little, I could usually tell what would make someone happy… It’s all so boring- Everything is boring! ES: Tell me… about yourself. YUNO: I was just messing around, then I found out there was a life inside of me… it just felt so gross. I could already see how my whole life would “have” to go from then on… I just got so tired of it all. ES: So that’s… why you killed it. YUNO: Yeah… I guess. Or maybe not. I don’t know. Thinking about it made my head all dizzy and I fell down the stairs. ES: Fell? YUNO: Yeah, fell. That’s why I really thought that this place was the afterlife for a while. And that I died with the baby. ES: But that wasn’t it. YUNO: Yep. I remembered my memories before I was brought here. I fell down the stairs, the life inside me was lost, and I was hospitalized. But after a short stay at the hospital, I was able to go back to school. My last memory is from my first day back at school after being discharged from the hospital… I felt nothing... Even though the baby inside me was gone. ES: Is that how it is? YUNO: Just like a wound healing, life simply goes on like nothing happened… What even is life… I remember thinking that- and that something was wrong with me for not feeling anything… ES: I won’t pretend that it’s easy to understand how you feel. But that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to grieve over someone’s death—
YUNO: Why do I get to be sad about someone else dying? Because I suddenly realized life is precious now? Because I’m permitted to be that selfish?! The only thing I can do for that kid… is to stay [aware/numb] forever. [T/N: Because さめた (sameta) can mean either “to wake up to reality/to be disillusioned” or “to be cold/numb”, the sentence あたしがあの子にできることなんて…ずっとさめたままでいることだけだよ (atashi ga ano ko ni dekiru koto nante… zutto sameta mama de iru koto dake dayo) can mean: 1. The only thing I can do for that kid… is to stay awake forever- to never dream and just stay in reality; 2. The only thing I can do for that kid… is to stay numb forever.] ES: You were definitely hurting… You just didn’t see it… You…numbed yourself to your pain. YUNO: What would you know? You’re just a kid. ES: I don’t know. You and me… we’re just kids. But I’ve seen your heart. I’ve listened to its entirety… your songs... You’re not as cold as you pretend to be. そうか」 YUNO: …is that so. YUNO: So, what’re you gonna do now, Warden-san? ES: What do you mean? YUNO: You still gonna keep MILGRAM going…? This place is already falling apart. Does Warden-san even have a reason to keep going? ES: Yeah…maybe. I don’t know yet. I’ll think about it as I meet with the other Prisoners. YUNO: I. see… Maybe that’s fine too. ES: Hey- Since this is the end, can I ask you something? YUNO: Hm? ES: What would’ve satisfied you? YUNO: What do you mean? ES: Whether you were forgiven, whether you weren’t forgiven- You wouldn’t have felt satisfied either way. YUNO: Yeah. I think so too. I’ve told you before that I never liked MILGRAM itself, right? And that people judging people, people deciding people is impossible- it doesn’t work out. ES: I remember it well. YUNO: I, more-or-less, know how Warden-san has judged everyone else. But to me, it was all just picking favorites- what you like and dislike. Different perspectives… different beliefs. ES: Yeah… I understand. No sinner was ever just Black-or-White… I get that now. [T/N: 囚人 (shuujin) can mean either "prisoner" or "sinner". The themes in Melting Temperature that seemingly aim to melt away rigid labels that simplify characters and persons makes the word "sinner" fit its context and story better. "Prisoner" creates a binding and limiting label that reduces a person to a polarity of non-innocence whereas "sinner" allows examination of that sinner-person beyond just the sin.] YUNO: What I was really looking for…? It’s a scary thought… I guess I kinda get what Warden-san is trying to say. Maybe I just wanted someone to scold me- to tell me I was wrong? Or maybe, I was lonely? If there’s anything I can say, all of it’s true and none of it’s true. ES: What do you mean?
YUNO: Stuff like “It’s like this for her” or “It’s weird not to think this for her”... Don’t assume how I felt. There isn’t just one reason- there might not even be a reason at all. Please… don’t try to make me into something so simple. ES: …That’s such a you thing to say. YUNO: Yep, yep. I think that’s just how people are. ES: I see. I’ve learned something today. A bell tolls from within the clock in the room. The structure of the interrogation room begins to change. YUNO: Already? ES: Time’s up… YUNO: Huh. This is goodbye, then. ES: Yeah… YUNO: Wait a sec… Warden-san? ES: What is it? YUNO: C’mere for a sec.
ES walks over slowly, as if the clock ticking down to the beginning of the end was of no issue. YUNO hugs ES. ユノ 「はい」 YUNO: There we go. YUNO: Hug! Ehe… Normally I’d charge 2500 for this, but I’ll let you have it for free. YUNO: Hehe. Just kidding. MAHIRU-san probably would’ve seen you off like this too. If it were you, Warden-san. YUNO: Whew- I put a lot into that- There! YUNO lets go of ES. YUNO: The end! What else to say I guess… Do your best! ES: Yeah… YUNO: I’ve said a lot to Warden-san, and I still think MILGRAM is a load of shit. ES: Still going on about that? YUNO: But if I hadn’t come here, maybe I never would’ve thought twice about what I did. It would’ve just disappeared into the background of my life… that another person had been inside me. I would’ve completely forgotten about it.
ES: YUNO… YUNO: Thank you for thinking about me. One person inside of me is already dead, but… thank you for getting to know us. ES: I’m… also glad I got to know you. I won’t forget… you and the other one. YUNO: If nothing else… I’m glad for that. Thanks, Warden-san. Bye-bye! Hope we meet again! ES: Yeah… Thank you as well. No- ユノ 「?」 YUNO: Huh? ES: That’s not needed anymore. ES takes their hat off and throws it to the ground. YUNO: You’re really… You’re throwing it away? ES: Yeah, from here on out I’m not a Warden. At least for now, I want to just be me. YUNO smiles, impressed. It was time to say goodbye. YUNO: Heh… Not bad, Es. Es looks back at Yuno, the corners of their mouth matching that of the gentle expression on Yuno’s. Their eyes soften. ES: Yuno Kashiki, sing your sins!

JLPT N5 - あげる
At its simplest, あげる means “to give”. At the N5 level, it’s used for giving physical things such as presents, money, water (to plants), food (to pets), etc. There is another way it can be used, but that is for a later JLPT level. For now, let’s get into ONE of the ways you can talk about giving in Japanese.
First, here is the vocabulary for this post.

【The Grammar of あげる】
Basically there are 4 parts to every あげる sentence that you should be thinking about. The first 3 are marked with particles and the last part is the verb.

Here is an example sentence:
= As for Kenji, to Tom, a watch gave
= Kenji gave Tom a watch.
In a sentence like #1 it’s easy to see the 3 parts clearly marked with particles and then the verb at the end. Unfortunately you WILL NOT always see simple sentences like this, so let’s look at each part one by one, along with the cultural context behind あげる.
【The Giver】
Most of the time, the giver will be marked by the は (or sometimes the が) particle. This is because あげる sets up the action of giving from the giver’s perspective.
Sometimes, it is obvious who the giver is, so that phrase can be completely left out of the sentence.
= to the people at (my) company, souvenirs will give I think
= I think I’m going to give the people at my company souvenirs.
In this sentence it would be clear that the speaker is the giver. Therefore it’s not necessary to include a 私は phrase.
【The Relationship Between Giver and Receiver】
Before we move on, let’s get into a very big cultural difference between Japan and English-speaking cultures. When you use あげる, you have to think about the relationship between the giver and the receiver. In English, this doesn’t affect the words we use, but in Japanese it is actually very important when it comes to word choice. Take a look at this image:

The green circle would include close friends, family, your lover, etc. Pets and plants would also fall into this circle. Outside of the green circle are strangers, teachers, professors and depending on your job, your customers. This is because showing respect is directly connected to setting up a kind of psychological distance. You have to work hard and gain trust before you are moved into the green circle.
Some people, like coworkers and bosses, may be inside the green circle in some situations, but outside of it in other situations! A common example is when you go out drinking with coworkers. As the alcohol flows throughout the night you’ll notice that psychological space slowly disappearing - that is until the next day at work. They might act like the person you drank with was a COMPLETELY different person!
This way of thinking is called うちそと, and can be a very difficult part of Japanese culture for many foreigners. Here’s the thing: the culture of うちそと extends to the concept of giving as well.
Giving Culture and あげる】
When it comes to giving, there are 4 situations where it’s appropriate to use the verb
① When you give something to someone inside your inner circle
② When you give something to anyone outside your inner circle
③ When someone in your inner circle gives something to someone outside your inner circle
④ When someone outside your inner circle gives something to another person outside your inner circle
Numbers 1-3 can be described as the act of giving while moving from a smaller circle to a bigger circle. Number 4 can be described as giving that doesn’t happen in your inner circle.

There are of course more possibilities when it comes to giving (and receiving). However, those situations won’t use the verb
【What Is Being Given】
In most sentences, whatever is being given is very simply marked with the を particle. However, there are times when the を particle or the positioning of what is being given will change. Take a look at these three example sentences:

Example 3a is the “default version”. The doll is marked with the を particle so we immediately know that it will be given to someone (the section manager’s wife).
For example 3b I want you to imagine that you are in a souvenir shop. You’ve bought a couple of things already, but you haven‘t decided which gifts will go to whom. All of a sudden, you see a doll that catches your eye. You immediately think to yourself, “that doll is perfect for the section manager’s wife”. Putting the item being given (that is, the doll) at the head of the sentence shows that 1) you are putting the focus of your sentence on that item and 2) there is a kind of impulsiveness to the giving. It’s kind of an instant decision.
Compare that with example 3c. Now I want you to imagine that you are in your house. You bought a bunch of dolls but you haven’t decided which one will go to whom. You pick up one of them and after some thought you say, “Ok I’ll give THIS one to the section manager’s wife.” Marking the doll with は serves to emphasize that there are several dolls, but you are highlighting one of them for a specific reason. It also shows that it WAS NOT an instant decision; some thought went into your decision.
This kind of distinction takes a really long time to understand and really “feel” but I hope that by explaining it to you now, it might stay with you somewhere deep inside your mind. You might even experiment with using sentences like 3b and 3c and surprise your Japanese friends!
【Alternative Verbs】
Lastly, let’s talk about your choice of verbs. You can actually adjust the level of “closeness” that the reader / listener feels by changing the verb that you use! あげる, あげた, あげます, あげました, etc. is used for a “default” level of closeness.
However, if the receiver is someone in a higher social position (for example a professor, a doctor, a boss, a politician, etc.) you would instead use the similar verb This verb actually serves to humble yourself - and thus elevates the listener / reader.
= as for this book, for nothing will give
= I will give you this book for free.
From this sentence you can tell that the giver and the receiver are on different levels, socially. (This is a little different than うちそと.) The listener will feel an elevated level respect simply by hearing the さしあげる verb.
On the other hand, if the receiver is someone VERY close to you, you can show that closeness by using the verb やる instead of あげる. やる is often used with pets and plants.
= as for her, to (her) dog food giving forgot
= She forgot to give her dog food.
As it turns out, this is why I keep on saying “what is given” instead of “a present” or “a gift”. Giving water to plants or food to pets is not a present or a gift.
Here is a visual representation of the 3 different verbs that you can use when talking about giving (from the giver’s perspective):

Here is 1 last example:

= as for apples I give to you, there are none
= I don’t have any apples to give you.
As you can see in #6, it’s possible to state a giver, a receiver and then あげる in order to describe what is being given. Once you do that, you will then have a topic which you can then go on to make a comment about!
【Conclusion】
So there you have it! あげる and its related verbs (さしあげる and やる) all express the idea of giving from the giver’s perspective. However, you have to keep the Japanese concept of うちそと in mind. Later we’ll talk about giving but from the receiver’s perspective. Stay tuned!
Rice & Peace!

Heart Sutra ~ A sutra that describes “The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom" (9)
Hoichi the Earless – A Japanese tale about spiritual merit of the Heart Surtra
When Xuanzang crossed the Silk Road to India, recited the heart Sutra and protected himself from evil demons through its spiritual power. (Ref). There is a folk tale in Japan that tells its spiritual merit.
A young Biwa-hōshi (lute monks) named Hoichi lived at Amida-dera Temple in Akamaseki. Hoichi was a master storyteller of the Tale of the Heike, especially the Dannoura battle, which is said to ‘make even the demons shed tears’.
The Battle of Dannoura was a historical fact, once a decisive battle between the Genji and Heike clans, with many Heike warriors and court nobles sinking to their deaths in the sea, and perished. The temple was built on the coast overlooking Dannoura to commemorate the Heike family.
One night, when the abbot is away, a warrior suddenly appears out of nowhere. Hoichi is begged by the warrior to go to the palace of the ‘nobleman’ to play his biwa. Although the blind Hoichi could not understand them, many noblemen seemed gathering. They requested a piece about the battle of Dannoura. Everyone is sobbing aloud and looking intensely moved. Hoichi is asked to play a whole week, and starts going out every night.
The abbot became suspicious and had temple men follow him one night. It was raining heavily, and Hoichi was alone in the empty cemetery of the Heike clan, playing his biwa in front of the grave of Emperor Antoku, who had died an untimely death as a child, surrounded by a frighteningly large number of demon firebrands. The astonished temple men forcefully bring Hoichi back home. The abbot then, knowing the nature of the grudge spirits that the body parts on which the sutras are written are transparently reflected and invisible, copied the Heart Sutra on Hoichi's whole body together with the temple men, so that the grudge spirits could not recognise Hoichi. However, they did not realise at the time that they had forgotten to copy the sutra on his ears (auricularia).
That night, as Hoichi sat alone, the warrior came for him as usual. However, Hoichi's body, on which a scripture is written, is invisible to the grudge spirit. Puzzled, the grudge spirit looked around for Hoichi, and found only his ears in the darkness, which were forgotten to copy the sutra. The grudge spirit used its monstrous power to tear the ear off Hoichi's head. The spirit left, silently. When the abbot returned at dawn, he realised that when he had written the Heart Sutra on Hoichi's body, he had forgotten to write the sutra only on his ears, and apologised to the bloodied Hoichi for his oversight.
After that, the Heike ghost never appeared before Hoichi again, and the wound in Hoichi's ear was soon healed by the good doctor. This strange event spread throughout the world, and he came to be known as ‘Hoichi the Earless’.
(There is also a version where Hoichi dies.)

Roughly translated small excerpt of Ryoji's story (夢の終わり) from the Persona 3 Novel Anthology
There's a Ryoji centered story in the Persona 3 novel anthology that I recently purchased and, though I haven't finished reading everything yet, I jumped around & skimmed and 😭 I love Ryoji...
I wanted to share a bit of the part of the story set on 12/31 with context for the art + very roughly translated and summarized some bits.
Ryoji: 「そんなに悲しげな顔はしないでほしいな」 (...I wish you wouldn’t look so sad)
[Ryoji then lifts his arm and pats Makoto’s head.]
(Truth is, I’ve always wanted to do this)
(Stay here. We'll protect you.)
Ryoji then tells him that to Nyx, it doesn't matter wherever they are, and that it'd be safest if they stayed away from him.
Makoto: But you're going to be alone.
Ryoji: I'm used to it, so it's all right..
The moment that Ryoji said something so sad with a smile, Makoto retorts: "You're lying"
[After a bit more text & dialogue exchange....]
Makoto: 「。。。
"... before I knew it, the tears that had clung onto my eyes were running down my cheeks. How long as it been since I've shed tears in front of another person."
(You're crying for someone like me.)
(Goodbye, my precious friend)

What the ghouls from the same house think about each other
It’s one of the questions that appeared in the latest B’s-log magazine issue. I decided to share this one because it’s fun.
DISCLAIMER: I’m not a translator, so please take this with a huge grain of salt because I don’t speak let alone read Japanese very well. I mostly used machine translation and some of the little knowledge I have to get through this. I added the original Japanese script if you wanna read that on your own.
Jin, Tohma, Ren and Subaru didn’t receive the question unfortunately
Frostheim
Lucas: “Ever since I transferred to this school, Kaito has been my first friend and has always been very kind to me. I'm also grateful to Ishibashi-san for all his help. As for Kamurai-san, I hope he'll just fulfill his duties...”
Kaito: “Hmm... To be honest, the captain and vice-captain seem like people way above the clouds... Rumor has it that the two of them are in collusion with the school and are doing terrible things. What? Luca? ...I've never heard of such a faceless bastard.”
*I’m really not sure what あんな顔面無双野郎 means.

Alan: “We're just half-baked people who happened to have powers. But they're willing to die and crawl back up... they have the potential.”
Leo: “No matter how you look at it, our captain is a complete loser. As for Sho-chan... I guess he's my slave♡”
Sho: “Ahh... Leo and I are just old friends. We've been hanging out since middle school. Mido-senpai... I don't really know what he's thinking. He's a man of few words, right?”

Romeo: “I’m disgusted by my boss. No matter how many times I say the same thing, it's WEFCP. What? It's "waste of effort", "fist-clenching" and "pressing". As for Shinjo, I'm going to give him a thorough training from now on, and we'll see how he turns out.”

Rui: “Ed-san has no ability to live on his own, so he's really a pain to look after. At this point, I’m in charge of nursing care... and then what about Lyca-kun... Huh? I'm taking care of the kids... What do those two think of me!?”
Lyca: “They're that moth-eaten Casanova and that blond gigolo. I'm human, so why am I not in the same place as Suba-kun and the others!!”
Mortkranken
Yuri: “You're talking about Jiro-kun, who is both Yuri Isami's assistant and patient? He's still in training. He still lacks knowledge, skills, experience, and culture. It'll probably take another 100 years for him to become a doctor at my level.”
Jiro: “Oh, the only ghoul in my house is Yuri. He's my doctor. If it weren't for Yuri, I'd probably be dead by now. Well, I'm grateful.”

hello danie hiii!!<333 what's your thought on Rui's response to Ed? the one when Ed said he's saving his life essence for Rui? the vessel part really really made me question things.
i think it is safe to assume that by "vessel" he meant an instrument for something. could it be that in order to stay immortal, Ed transfers his soul from one body to another and this time, he's choosing Rui's body as his new home? or do you think that it meant something entirely different? thank you for the response, i love reading your theories!!<33
I don't think it's that. I mean I can't imagine Ed wanting to use a body that he can't touch people with. He's a vampire, not a demon or spirit or something, so I don't think he transfers his soul in any way. In Japanese Ed says 「俺の命は、 君に分けてあげるために取っておいてるんだ」 "I'm saving my life force so I can split it with you". Ed is saying that his life force is equally Rui's in his eyes. He can't lose too much of his life because that's less for him to share with Rui to keep them together. I know that sounds like shippy brain but I think that it's supposed to be ship tease-y on top of showing Ed's attachment to someone who might actually not have to die and leave him(and that Rui isn't really interested in playing that part.)
I think Rui just means that keeping him/his body(「入れ物」 "container") alive is pointless. He doesn't want to live that long and keeping him around that long isn't worth doing. Alternatively Rui knows he'll live on even if his body dies--maybe he'll become a proper reaper without his human body?--and that Ed keeping his body alive at all costs is a stupid thing to do when he's going to keep existing without it.
I'm glad you enjoy my theorizing--I enjoy theorizing with everyone too even if I don't always agree!! It's a lot of fun even if I haven't been doing it much lately :'D

Hi! I was wondering if you’ve translated the “this is no small potatoes” line from 2/2, where it later got changed to “this isn’t trivial” ? I love the scene so I’m curious if there is another layer of nuance in their discussion in the Japanese version
(Wow, this post was just hanging out in my drafts, totally written. Be free, little post. yeah, it's not little)
Hi anon! I currently have no thoughts of any kind and have forgotten most of what I ever knew, but I love this small sequence so much that I'm going to try to elaborate on it.
In short: these lines are the capstone of Joker and Akechi's arc. They run right back through the third semester to the Jazz Club, and right back to his confidant. They're the emotional heart of them.
kimi wa kawarazu, Maruki to chigau michi o erabeba ii All you have to do is stick to your guns and challenge Maruki. [lit. if you choose a different path to Maruki without wavering, it'll be fine.]
First off, here's another instance of that "choose your own path" motif, elided from the localisation. This is not just associated with Akechi in P5, but he really does hammer it home.
now freeze: the callback to conf 7
Conf 7 is probably my favourite confidant stage, and I've discussed it before at some length. Specifically, we're looking at the phone call afterwards, where Akechi sums up what they've discussed:
bokura ni wa otagai yuzurenai mono ga atte, sono tame ni mo makerarenai Neither of us can afford to lose, because we fight in service of our principles. It's the same for both of us. Neither of us can afford to lose, because of these principles we won't concede. … dakara koso, moshi mo kimi ga jibun o magetari shitara zettai ni yurusanai yo And that is precisely why… I cannot allow you to change. … And that's precisely why, if you betrayed yourself that way… I couldn't allow it. datte, boku ga maketakunai no wa "kimi" nan da kara As you are now, as you think now… I cannot allow you to win over me.
This phone call, which likely takes place the evening after Akechi's murder phone call, summarises how Akechi sees Joker, at the start of the Sae mission—and it's a remarkably positive vision. Conf 7 highlights the similarities between Joker and Akechi, before conf 8 casts their differences into sharp relief.
In fact, in his determination to illustrate why the two of them can never be friends, Akechi reveals something he may not quite have intended: the things he most admires about Joker are his loyalty and his devotion to his friends.
Seriously. Joker's devotion to his confidants is the thing Akechi sets alongside his own obsession that has driven him to murder. I don't have space to lay the whole thing out here, but you should check the conf 7 essay out if you have time.
january in the jazz club
This image of Joker as an impenetrable fortress with indomitable will comes up again in the jazz club, and rather indirectly:
konna ijou jitai demo kimi ga matomo de tasukatta yo I'm glad you're still normal, even in this bizarre situation. Even in such a bizarre situation as this, you've saved your sanity. kimi made shouki o ushinattetara... maa, sono toki wa tatakiokoshiteta darou kedo If even you had lost it… Well, if that happened, I would have slapped you awake.
The logic of the first line has been slightly altered in translation. It's not a huge shift, but it's changed the emphasis—rather than being glad Joker hasn't lost it like the others, Akechi is observing it. He expected it. He would have expected no less of his rival. (That matomo de, by the way, is far more often seen as matomo de nai, and it means that someone is not sane.)
This follows straight on from conf 7—from the idea Akechi has that Joker is someone dependable. And more than that—if Joker should cease to be that way, Akechi views it as his duty to set him straight.
He said so in conf 7's phone call (that "I cannot allow you to change", which is actually far more like, "if you gave way, I couldn't allow it") And he's saying the same thing here: "if you lose yourself, I'll slap you awake."
This gives us a little additional context for 2/2.
back to 2/2
Here's Akechi's next line:
Akechi それとも、君はこの程度で意志を曲げるようなやつなのか? soretomo, kimi wa kono teido de ishi o mageru you na yatsu na no ka? Or, are you really so spineless that you’d fold over some bullshit, trivial threat on my life?
There is a small linguistic callback here to that conf 7 phone call—Akechi uses the same verb 曲げる mageru, meaning to bend or distort, or to give way on a point of principle. The localisation has it as "fold", which does call back to conf 7, but to the wrong part! In conf 7, mageru referred to Joker's principles yielding under pressure, giving way under influence; here, it's in the extended form ishi o mageru—literally to bend one's will, to have it give way or crumble.
This word 意志 ishi is the "will" of Will Seeds, of the will to rebellion; this is the thing Akechi is calling Joker out on sacrificing. This is the thing he believes is so much more important than his own life. This is the callback here, through the jazz club and the phone call to that November night outside Penguin Sniper, to "You're my rival."
Literally, Akechi's line here is "or are you the sort of guy whose will crumbles for as little as this?". Compared to his image of Joker, Akechi's life is nothing. Compared to his image of Joker, the whole world is probably nothing. Again, it's the ideal and the real; 2/2 is when Akechi's image of Joker runs headlong into the reality of him, of a real, breathing, living boy who hurts and cries and bleeds and dies, rather than an icon. Even 11/20 never truly brings this home, because Joker escapes—just as conf 7 suggests Akechi expected him to. It is integral to the pedestal Akechi has Joker on that he would never throw the world aside for Akechi.
This is why it's only rank 10 promise Akechi, primed for the third awakening, who shows up to Leblanc to defend that pedestal. This is why the translation I return to for this line is "Or are you telling me you'd throw away everything you believe in for nothing at all?" Akechi's life is not the point here; he barely mentions it. The point here is supposed to be what Joker is throwing away.
And it's Joker, of course, not Akechi, who refocuses the conversation to what—to who—is really being thrown away.
joker's response
Joker 『この程度』じゃない “kono teido” ja nai This isn't "trivial"! You're not "nothing"!
There are other responses, of course, but this is the big one. This is the one that used to be "This isn't small potatoes"—and I hope I've illustrated why that translation was so bad that Atlus went back in and changed it. Because as well as gutting Akechi's lines of their context, that line gutted this whole moment, the pinnacle of Joker and Akechi's story, of its emotional impact.
Joker simply was not saying that things were a little bit serious—not small potatoes. He was saying Akechi mattered. You could easily render that kono teido ja nai as, simply, "But you matter." and that really isn't small potatoes
An overlooked response here is the third one, the only one Akechi will accept:
[Joker] 意思は曲げない ishi wa magenai I won't fold. My will won't break.
Yep. This one bypasses all Akechi's complaints about mercy, about betrayal, as he cuts to the chase:
Then you already know what needs to be done…
Note that the Japanese is a question—"Then you already know what needs to be done, right?". And it leads directly into Akechi's final demand: "What do you intend to do?"

Oracles of the Three Shrines / Sanja Takusen
This is one of my favourite teachings and piece of Shinto history. I've always really liked these, so I wanted to share with you all! It has a bit of a controversial history as you can read on the Kokugaukuin entry, but, it's important to note this - "However, even if assuming they were a forgery, the content of the oracles still had moral efficacy.
The oracles were thus not rejected as an effective means of cultivating the morals of the common people such as bringing about a sense of devotion for the kami, and won support from adherents of popular Shinto (tsūzoku shintō), teachers of practical ethics (sekimon shingaku) and persons connected with Buddhism espousing the unity of the three teachings, i.e. Shintō, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
A vast amount of handbooks, picture scrolls and prints were produced for the common people.
Moreover, pious associations (kō) offering dedicatory lanterns (tōrō) to the three shrines were formed in various places.
Faith in the sansha takusen deeply permeated the whole country and did not abate throughout the early modern period.."
(Additionally, many Sanja Takusen shrines for the three Kami-sama were enshrined and established together at particular Jinja, I remember in particular Kibitsu Jinja has a space for them!)
I adjusted the official English translation slighty (you can see the official one on Kokugakuin here) And, I've also included easy to read Japanese and explanation in Japanese as well - courtesy from this website page and the author
These teachings emphasize honesty, sincerity (spiritual 'cleanliness' / clarity), and mercy / compassion
----
Amaterasu Omikami-sama:
"If you plot and scheme to deceive people, you may fool them for a while, and even seem to have profited from doing so. But you will without fail be visited by divine retribution. To be deeply sincere and honest may have people shun you and speak ill of you, but in the end, such a person will receive the blessings of the sun and moon."
Hachiman Okami-sama:
"Follow sincerity without fail. Though one could attempt to eat a red-hot ball of iron, one must never eat food from a person with an insincere heart. Though one might sit above a blazing fire hot enough to melt copper, one must never go into the place of a person of an insincere mind. This is to keep a clear heart."
Kasuga Okami-sama:
"Even though you may see someone of a household who seems to have managed for long to avoid misfortune, the Kami will not enter into the household of a person with a perverse and cruel disposition. On the other hand, even though a man be in mourning for his father and mother*, if he is a man of compassion, the Kami will enter in his home. Compassion is all important."
*[Traditionally, there is an idea someone in mourning would be considered to have kegare, negative energy, bad energy - and therefore the Kami-sama would avoid them and they should avoid the Kami-sama. But the teaching here says even though he is in mourning and may have kegare, his heart is pure and compassionate, so the Kami-sama will enter his home regardless]

Seeing this, ES’ face warps into a complicated expression. ES: …Are you okay? That- Does it hurt? FUUTA: What? Worried about these wounds? Haha, pretty nasty, huh? ES: Yeah... FUUTA: My entire body still hurts like hell though… Feels like I’m going insane... ES: ... FUUTA: If Old Man Kazui hadn’t been there, this would’ve been a lot worse……resorting to violence is the worst, huh... FUUTA mutters to himself lifelessly, his demeanor clearly off. [T/N: 力なくブツブツと喋り (chikaranaku butsu-butsu to shaberi) “FUUTA mutters to himself weakly” is an interesting script direction. People tend to associate constantly muttering to oneself as a symptom of mental illness. It’s mainly attributed to disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or ASD.] ES: Yeah, resolving things through violence is despicable. FUUTA: Is that so... ES: So, those injuries- KOTOKO gave them to you. FUUTA: Ha? Acting all innocent… You’re the one who made her do it... エス 「いや、それはー」 ES: No, that’s-
FUUTA: Are you satisfied? You decided you wouldn’t forgive me, you know. Haha… Satisfied that such a simple punishment came to? ES: That’s- No, that’s not it. FUUTA: Ah? ES: I never wanted punishment like this. I didn’t instruct Kotoko to do this either. Punishment through violence... FUUTA: Hmph... ES: I didn’t think it would turn out like this.
ES lowers their eyes. FUUTA smiles coldly. ES: What’s so funny…? FUUTA: You’re one to talk… You wished for it- This. This version of me... ES: You’re mistaken. All I ever wanted was to understand why all of you became murderers and how I should judge that. That’s all I intended to—
FUUTA lifts his eyepatch, showing ES the wound on his eye. FUUTA: Oi, look. My right eye. It’s pretty messed up, isn’t it? This is what happens when you get kicked with something like a steel-toed boot. ES: …! FUUTA: Don’t get creeped out, it stings. [T/N: Don’t get creeped out, it hurts my feelings.] ES: ... FUUTA: According to SHIDOU, there’s a good chance my eyesight’s not gonna come back. I can’t take it anymore... ES: That… FUUTA: Right? That wasn’t the plan, was it? He scoffs mockingly and puts the eyepatch back on. FUUTA: But you know what? Thanks to this pain, I finally understand what MILGRAM really is. ES: What are you talking about... FUUTA: Hey, you forgave that KOTOKO bitch, didn’t you? You endorsed that asshole’s ideology that it’s okay to do whatever you want to Bad People. [T/N: コトコのヤツ (kotoko no yatsu) was translated into “that KOTOKO bitch” as FUUTA is talking about her in an impolite, annoyed/disgruntled manner. He is not using it as a sexist insult. ワルイヤツ (warui yatsu) was translated into “Bad People” rather than “bad people” as the katakana spelling creates an emphasis, an ostranenie; a value capture that simplifies and quantifies.] ES: How do you know that…? FUUTA: It came through real loud and clear while she was beating the shit outta me. She really thinks it’s okay to do anything to someone labelled a bad person… no matter how big or small the sin. I trusted you- your standards of judgement. [T/N: Compared to FUUTA’s previous line using ワルイヤツ (warui yatsu) for “Bad People”, 悪人 (aku nin) in this line has nuances closer to “evil person”/“wrongdoer”/“villain” in which it’s more descriptive of a person’s nature rather than a category of person.] FUUTA: You permitted that way of thinking. ES: It’s true that I felt there was some value in her perspective… That, sometimes, fighting evil as a form of justice… is necessary... FUUTA: Heh- MILGRAM changed according to your judgement… Your standards of good and evil. You should already know that this is the world you’ve created…
FUUTA’s voice quiets, laced with an accusatory tone. ES is visibly shaken. ES: That’s- That’s not true... FUUTA: You didn’t forgive me, but you forgave KOTOKO. Is that how it is…? This is the outcome YOU wanted... [T/N: Whenever “YOU” is written instead of “you”, it means that FUUTA is saying オマエ (omae) spelled in katakana instead of お前 (omae, spelled in kanji). Katakana is typically used for words with an outsiderness (ex. foreign loanwords), for emphasis, and/or to make something seem “louder” in some aspect. In this voice drama’s case, katakana omae is translated as FUUTA giving highlight and emphasis on YOU (Warden).] FUUTA hangs his head, drained of energy. FUUTA: You’re laughing, aren’t you…? Even now… seeing me like this... FUUTA: You didn’t think it would turn out like this. Right? ES: Y-yeah... フータ 「わかるよ」 FUUTA: I get it. ES: …? FUUTA: …I get it, I really do... ES: FUUTA? FUUTA: …And yet…why…why is it just me... FUUTA’s breathing grows erratic, emotions spiralling out of control. FUUTA: Ha… I’M JUST-! ES: …! ES flinches at his sudden outburst. FUUTA, overwhelmed by stress and pain, teeters on the edge of an emotional collapse. FUUTA: I’M JUST LIKE THAT* TOO! I’m just like that so I didn’t think it’d end up like this! [T/N: *Could mean anyone. Fuuta could be saying “I’m just like Kotoko too!” or “I’m just like you too!” or “I’m just like _ too!” Alternatively, this sentence could also be translated as “That’s what I did too! I never thought it’d end up like this!”] ES: FUUTA... FUUTA: I’M NO DIFFERENT!! So why?! Why didn’t YOU forgive me…?! FUUTA cries out. He steps toward ES with an expression that’s neither anger nor sorrow. *Instead, it’s something raw- something unresolved. [T/N: This line isn’t explicitly written, however it was included as a localization choice in order to (1) make the story being told by the script directions more enjoyable and engaging for the reader and (2) to evoke the carnality associated with baptism imagery that calls back to the title of the VD “Baptism of Fire”; to baptize is for an unsettled to be immersed into the death of a savior and rise as a “new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17).]
FUUTA: What did I even do?! All I did was call out bad things for being bad! All I did was go after some Bad Person online! Does that really warrant this?! I didn’t even use violence like YOU enthusiastically did! ES: …But…but MILGRAM has judged you as a murderer! [T/N: Alternative translation: “B-but…but MILGRAM decided that you’re a murderer!”] FUUTA expression clouds ES’ words, gloom shrouding over. His body flinches, his wound aching. FUUTA: Tch-! …Shit, it hurts... ES: ... FUUTA: …Apparently that person did die…yeah, that’s true... ES: Then, what you did can’t just be dismissed as online harassment. It led to someone’s death. That makes you a murderer. FUUTA: But, all I know is the result- that someone died! Who’s to say that that was because of me…? ES: …MILGRAM has decreed that—
FUUTA: WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THAT?!! FUUTA screams hysterically. Unstable. Dangerous. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he explodes violently at any moment. ES: Calm down, FUUTA. You’re going to hurt yourself. FUUTA: …I-Is that so. It wasn’t just me going after that dead guy online. Whose comment killed them- who the fuck knows?! ES: …That may be true. Maybe you’re not the only one who should be judged, but— フータ 「じゃあオレだけがこんな想いしてんのおかしいじゃねえか…… FUUTA: Then why the fuck am I the only one going through this…?! Locked up in some insane prison, getting lectured by a kid, getting beaten up until almost dead… Ah-... Ah, let’s say… let’s just say- that it was because I went after them online that someone died... FUUTA clutches his head, spiralling into a mental breakdown.
FUUTA: I never thought that they’d die… I just called out something bad as bad, treated sin as sin… You understand that, don’t you? ES: ... FUUTA: Hey. That makes YOU the same as me... ES: You and me, the same... ES is stunned by FUUTA’s words. ES: You mean to say that… I, who chose not to forgive you without expecting it to result in you getting physically hurt… am the same as you who caused someone’s death without intentionally meaning to do so... FUUTA: Yeah… What’s the difference…? Even MAHIRU’s on the verge of dying… If she actually dies, then we’re the same, aren’t we…? ES trembles, visibly shaking with indignation. ES: Don’t make a fool out of me... FUUTA: Haa? それを僕と同じだと⁉」 ES: I saw it with my own eyes! The way that you enjoyed what you were doing, like it was a game! How you led the masses and crushed someone who had no chance*! And you dare compare that to me!? [T/N: 一方的に蹂躙するサマを (ippou teki ni juurin suru sema o) means to crush someone in a one-sided manner.] FUUTA: ... ES: Don’t give me that. I’m the Warden of MILGRAM. I’m the one who judges all of your sins. It’s not just you and MAHIRU. All ten prisoners faced their sins with their lives on the line! Don’t you dare lump me in with you, someone who treats people’s sins as entertainment. FUUTA: …Heh…hehehe... FUUTA can’t suppress his laughter at ES’ declaration. FUUTA: Ahahahahaha! What an idiot! You!! ES: What…? FUUTA: What kind of noble being do you think you are?! …That fancy hat and uniform must really be inflating your ego, huh?! ES: Watch what you say, Prisoner Number 3... ES glares at FUUTA. But, FUUTA shows no fear.
FUUTA: You take this seriously? Really? Are you telling me that there wasn’t even a little part of YOU that enjoyed my sins, my punishments…? [T/N: The へ (he) in オレへの罰を、愉しむ気持ちが (ore he no batsu o, tanoshimu kimochi ga) “pleasure arising through punishing me” adds a nuance that the person FUUTA is talking about cares more about directing actions to a someone/having a target for their punishment rather than FUUTA themself.] ES: …What are you…? FUUTA: You know what? I heard your voice too… all the time. A voice I didn’t wanna hear! Even when I covered my ears, it kept echoing and echoing in my head! I couldn’t shut it out no matter how hard I tried!! ES: …? FUUTA: Tens of thousands of voices coming at me with all kinds of words…blaming me—out of curiosity, for fun, just because they didn’t like me… Not a single one of them sounded as polite or moral as YOU pretend to be… None were any different from me. ES: …YUNO also…said that she heard it too. Countless voices... FUUTA: Haha… YOU and ME, we’re no different. You enjoy our sins. You get off on them! ES: …I just wanted to understand all of you. To know you all better... FUUTA: Hahahahaha!! Me and you are the same! The only difference is what we’re wearing! And that guy* is the one deciding whether to forgive me or not?!! [T/N: *that guy = ES] エス 「フータ……」 ES: FUUTA... フータ 「オレを赦さないんだよな⁉ じゃあオマエはオマエのことも赦すなよ⁉」 FUUTA: You couldn’t forgive me, right?! Then, don’t you fucking dare forgive yourself either!! ES: FUUTA-! ES yells, putting an end to FUUTA’s rant. FUUTA: What?!! ES: …I understand what you’re saying. Let’s say YOU and I are the same. Even so… I’m still the Warden. FUUTA: Haa? ES: No matter what you say, I’m not going to stop doing my job. Even if it means being a hypocrite myself, I will judge your sins. FUUTA: ... ES: Whatever moral responsibility I have to bear, I’ll bear it! This is something I started! Hearing ES’ words, FUUTA’s body slumps, all of his strength draining from him.
FUUTA: …Haa... ES: …? FUUTA: Ahh… I see how it is... ES: O-oi. Are you okay, FUUTA? FUUTA: …There’s no point in saying anything, is there…? Not to YOU... ES: Why the sudden defeatism? What’s wrong? FUUTA: Hey… ES… Just hear me out, okay? [T/N: 聴いてくれ (kiitekure) means to intentionally listen, or “active listening”.] ES: …? FUUTA: I can’t take it anymore… I’m at my limit… I can’t stand it anymore... [T/N: “I can’t take it anymore… I’m at my limit… I can’t endure it anymore…”] FUUTA mumbles in a hollow, almost soulless voice. FUUTA: If someone died because I called them out online… and then you went after me for that… and then I end up dead… then it just keeps going, doesn’t it? This cycle. ES: FUUTA? FUUTA: Hey, I’ll forgive you now- for what you did to me… I’ll accept this pain… So... Tears well up in FUUTA’s eyes as he pleads desperately—as if death was certain. FUUTA: Please, just forgive me already… I’m begging you... ES: …! FUUTA: It hurt so much, I thought I was gonna die… I was so scared... FUUTA: Being constantly vilified by tens of thousands of people- It’s the worst… I can’t even sleep, it feels like the whole world is constantly watching me... ES: ... FUUTA: I don’t want to hurt anymore! I don’t want to suffer anymore…!! Please! I was wrong, okay?! ES!
ES grimaces at FUUTA’s anguished cries. They crouch down beside FUUTA and speak gently. ES: …FUUTA. I… don’t hate any of you... FUUTA: …Ah- ah-... ES: I’ve spent so much time confronting all of you, looking at what’s in your hearts- experiencing it. Even if you’re all murderers, you’re not strangers anymore. That attachment is something that cannot be severed easily... [T/N: Alternative translation for the last line is: “That affection is something that cannot be severed easily…”] FUUTA: …I-is that so... ES: When I see you hurt, I do feel that my actions are regrettable. I wonder if my judgements have distorted all of you even further... FUUTA: ... ES: And- And also... ES gives a sad smile. ES: If I’m being honest, I also think of you all as friends. [T/N: ES uses 友 (tomo), a bit more casual way to say “friend”. There’s the possibility that because of the current circumstances of FUUTA having an active mental crisis, ES is speaking much more gently, but there’s also the possibility that ES disclosing this unprofessional feeling of theirs is making them phrase it casually.] ES: …It’s a shame, you know?
Suddenly, the chime of a clock echoes throughout the room. The structure of the interrogation room begins to shift. At the same time, the uncertainty on ES’ face vanishes. [T/N: This is heavily reminiscent of Pavlov’s conditioning using a bell. ES has been shown to automatically return to the detached Warden state upon hearing the signal of MILGRAM’s bell in both Baptism of Fire and YONAH.] ES: I. am the Warden. ES: I can’t take the confessions you utter in a moment of desperation just to escape the pain you’re in at face value. FUUTA: No… That’s not... ES: And I can’t even say for sure whether there is any connection between your current suffering and the sins that you have committed. あ…… FUUTA: …Ah…Agh... ES: And of course, we must take into consideration that you have yet to offer an apology to the person that you have killed.
ES: An apology to me for your past actions means nothing. FUUTA: Aghh… No! That’s not it! ES turns their back on FUUTA and pulls their hat down over their eyes. ES: Thanks, FUUTA. You’ve helped me realize what kind of resolve I need. FUUTA: …!! ES: As the Warden, as me, I must not hesitate to pass judgement on even my crying, pleading friend… That is all. This concludes the interrogation. FUUTA: ES… ES!! You bastard!!! I’ll fucking kill you!! FUUTA screams, his voice dripping with tears. ES gives a bitter smile. ES: Heh... FUUTA: Are you even listening, you bastard-!? Forgive me! If you don’t, I swear I’ll murder you!! ES: That’s fine… If you and I are truly the same, then I suppose that that will happen one day. ES turns to face FUUTA, their voice as cold as ice. ES: Prisoner Number 3, FUUTA, sing your sins.

Apartment Hunting

Let me share with you my current struggles on finding a place to stay in Japan with this long vocabulary list!
ネット上(じょう)on the internet
礼金(れいきん)key money (fee paid for rental rights)
滞納(たいのう)falling behind (with a payment)
Moving into a Japanese property comes with high initial costs which can be broken down into numerous different fees. Unfortunately, share houses are not necessarily fully excluded from this, but it really depends on the company. I'm glad that I could take some time to work and save up money before going to Japan. The first month will be very expensive.
