Sequel to Poyun, Tunhai embarks on the story of the former undercover agent Wu Yu, his past entanglements with the police force and various drug lords - especially the drug lord nicknamed Shark - and his developing romance with Bu Chonghua. It’s another action-packed, mystery-filled novel that triumphs the prequel Poyun in terms of complexities and number of twists and turns. 

This is my second read with the physical simplified cn version and I shared many of the same sentiments as my review of the prequel. The mysteries are engaging, the MC’s backstory is heart-wrenching, and the author’s knowledge of the police force and crime scene investigation is top-notch (at least from my outsider’s point of view). I also dig Huai Shang’s detailed writing of the scenes and actions - in most of the fights, I was able to imagine the movements and chase sequences just from her well-written descriptions. 

As mentioned earlier, the story is also highly complex, involving multiple interrelated cases with red herrings thrown here and there, and characters that are tightly linked. For example, Wu Yu and Bu Chonghua crossed paths when they were kids, the event of which directed Bu Chonghua’s subsequent growth into the police force. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the moment he realized Wu Yu was his savior. Likewise, we get cameos from the first novel - namely Jiang Ting, Yan Xie, and Qin Chuan - who have different levels of history with the characters in the sequel. In particular, I felt that the character Qin Chuan is far more developed; having established his checkered history with the police, it is entertaining to read about the ways he navigated around Shark and the police, and to guess at his dubious motivations. He is not the only character with seemingly dubious motivations - we also have a wide selection featuring Lin Zheng (in charge of cyber security who seemingly waver between being on Wu Yu’s side and persecuting him) and Zhang Boming (Wu Yu’s former supervisor who allegedly suicided after forsaking Wu Yu), among others. Even Wu Yu himself vacillates between the role of a police officer and that of a druggie.

Now, being a sequel to a popular novel meant that comparisons are inevitable. Of the two, I prefer Poyun over Tunhai, for a few key reasons. One, the overall storyline of Tunhai is a bit too similar to Poyun. We have both of the MCs Jiang Ting and Wu Yu being undercover agents, both of whom have a strangely-harmonious relationship with a big drug lord. Where Jiang Ting’s relationship with K is logical because of their shared childhood, Wu Yu’s relationship with Shark is more unexplainable. There is no reason why Shark would allow Wu Yu to live, time and time again, even offering him a free passageway to live on an island so long as the latter stopped interfering in his operation. This is despite Shark being painted as a cold, cunning character. 

Second, Tunhai isn’t fully a standalone. It references a lot of events and characters from the first novel, hence if you didn’t read Poyun beforehand, it is hard to appreciate some of the characters and their relationships in Tunhai to the fullest extent. 

Third, the main couple’s dynamic in Tunhai reads less romantic to me. That being said, this is personal preference and I fully acknowledge that I was reading the simplified cn version, hence a lot of shippy scenes might be cut out (though the simplified cn version for Poyun nevertheless has a lot of sweet moments).

Finally, as much as Tunhai is cool for being more complex than Poyun, it can get a bit too convoluted, and I sometimes find myself wondering whether the resolution justifies the amount of plot twists to get there. Once again, this is personal preference, and I nevertheless had a fun time reading and would not hesitate to put Tunhai as my top 10 danmeis. It’s just relative to Poyun, I would prefer the first novel to the sequel.

Light the candle inside the bowl. Name your two opposing forces aloud.

Pour the liquids simultaneously around the flame, chanting:

火焰吞噬潮水， 潮水浇灭火焰—— 双方皆无胜负， 双方都改名换姓。 Flame devours the tide, Tide quenches the flame— Neither wins, Both change name.

Add the gunpowder. Watch it hiss but not ignite—this is controlled fusion.

Extinguish the candle with the mixture. The steam is your new path.

PARALLEL MYTHOLOGY

TITLE: The Sky-Sea's Flow / The Divine Alchemy

MYTHIC ARCHETYPE: Tzovinar (Armenian Goddess of Storms and Sea-Waters)

REGION: Ancient Armenia

FORM: A powerful goddess of rain, sea, and storm. Her name means "Daughter of the Sea" or "Tidal-Nar," and she rides a fiery horse through the sky, bringing life-giving rain from the clouds to the earth and sea.

TALE: Tzovinar is a primordial force. In one myth, she quenches her thirst by drinking a full handful of sea water, which leads to her immaculate conception of the twin heroes Sanasar and Baghdasar (founding fathers of an Armenian city). This act—taking the vast, undrinkable sea and integrating it within herself to create life—is the ultimate act of temperance and alchemy. She blends the sky-world and the sea-world within her very being.

WHY TEMPERANCE? She is the act of mixing. The RWS Angel has one foot on land and one in water, pouring between two cups. Tzovinar embodies this more elementally: she is the divine rain (one cup) pouring into the great sea (the other cup). Her act of drinking the sea shows a mastery over elemental forces, not through force, but through careful integration and blending to create something new and balanced. She is the alchemical marriage of opposites.

INTERPRETATION THROUGH TZOVINAR: This card is a call to be a divine alchemist in your own life. You are being asked to blend two opposing forces—logic and emotion, work and rest, the sacred and the mundane. Like Tzovinar pouring the life-giving rain into the vast sea, you have the power to create a new, healed whole from disparate parts. Do not seek extremes. The answer lies in the "just right" middle path, the perfect mixture that brings peace and generative power.

RITUAL OF THE TWO WATERS (For Creating Harmony)

OBJECTIVE: To find balance and a "middle path" between two conflicting areas of your life (e.g., your day job and your artistic passion, your need for solitude and your need for partnership).

MATERIALS:

Two distinct cups or bowls.

Water from two different sources, if possible (e.g., tap water and rainwater, or saltwater and freshwater). If not, just using two separate containers is fine. One will represent each side of your conflict.

A third, larger "alchemical" bowl, which will be your blending vessel.

Optional: a tiny pinch of salt for one water and a tiny pinch of sugar for the other to make them symbolically distinct.

STEPS:

NAMING THE POLES: Place the two cups of water before you. Assign each cup to one of the conflicting forces in your life. Hold the first cup. Acknowledge its nature, its needs, its voice. "This is my need for structure and security." Now hold the second cup. Acknowledge its nature. "This is my need for freedom and creative chaos."

THE INVOCATION OF BLENDING: Place the larger empty bowl between the two cups. Invoke the spirit of the card. "Tzovinar, she who drinks the sea and summons the rain, teach me the art of alchemy. Guide my hands that I may find the middle flow, the path of healing."

THE TEMPERANCE POUR: Now, perform the central act. Simultaneously, or alternating back and forth, begin pouring the water from the two cups into the central bowl. This is not about just dumping them in. It's a slow, mindful process. Watch how the waters merge. Listen to the sound. Your goal is to create a single, unified body of water from the two sources. Find a rhythm. Feel the balance.

CONSECRATING THE NEW WAY: When both cups are empty and the water is blended in the central bowl, dip the fingers of both hands into this new, integrated water. Anoint your third eye (for a new perspective), your heart (for a new feeling), and your hands (for new action). Say aloud: "Not two, but one. Not conflict, but balance. Not extremes, but harmony. I walk the middle path."

CLOSING: Use this consecrated water for something life-giving. Water a plant with it, pour it onto the earth as a libation, or simply leave it on your altar as a symbol of your newfound balance. The ritual is complete.

SYNCRETIC BRIDGE

Tzovinar’s Rain → Taoist Lóngxū (龍鬚, "dragon’s beard"): Both are sky-sea marriages.

Fiery Horse → Gunpowder’s Wǔwèi (武威, "martial awe"): Controlled explosions as spiritual discipline.

由影像創作者暨媒體研究者佐佐木友輔執筆，圍繞電影、攝影、美術與動畫中的「風景」與投射風景的「螢幕」為主題，縱橫論述各式作品的��載文章。以1970年前後的「風景論」爭辯為出發點，企圖加以更新。本篇首回將攝影師中平卓馬與西澤諭志對照，以大阪萬博為關鍵轉折點，思索現代社會中權力＝風景的樣貌。 中平卓馬——風景的殘骸（Detritus）

中平卓馬與《風景的死滅》

1971年10月25日發行的松田政男著作《風景的死滅》（田畑書店）封面，使用了中平卓馬拍攝的海景照片。這張照片也出現在中平於1970年出版的《為了未來的言語》一書中，為書中跨頁照片右側經裁切後使用的版本。畫面上方三分之一為天空，下方三分之二則為白浪翻湧的海面，水平線略為右斜向下。水面上的複雜紋理、拍攝當下的模糊與晃動、粗顆粒感等元素交織在一起，構築出難以分割的視覺關係。再透過高光澤的銀墨印刷，反射出帶有物質感的黯淡光澤。

取下書衣後，書本本體的封面也同樣使用了海景照片，這次是取自《為了未來的言語》跨頁左側經裁切後的圖像。畫面中省略了天空，以海面全面覆蓋畫面為設計。印刷質地比封面更為粗糙，一眼看去甚至難以辨認是否為海洋。既像是沙灘表面的紋理，也彷彿是印表機故障所致的錯誤印刷。

如眾���周知，這種模糊晃動的照片正是中平卓馬在《Provoke》時期的典型風格。拍攝者或被攝者的移動造成的晃動與模糊、粗顆粒、曝光過度或不足、無視水平線的不穩定構圖……這些靜止畫面中卻具有動態特質的風景，既可視為中平攝影行為的刻印記錄，也強烈主張那是由「攝影機之眼」——與人眼截然不同的視角——所捕捉的風景。中平排斥那些如內心反射或意識形態投影般的主觀、感傷攝影，致力於將攝影作為如實記錄事物的工具。

《風景的死滅》收錄了許多與1960年代末至70年代初「風景論爭」有關的松田重要論述。而中平也是這場論爭的中心人物之一，透過攝影與言說雙重實踐，發展出獨自的風景論。若讀者對當時論述不甚熟悉，聽到「風景論」一詞，或許會以為是探討「以風景為主題的攝影」或「應該記錄哪種風景？哪種風景最美？」這類直觀問題。但對中平而言，「風景」是如同「一層塑膠膜般的面紗」，遮蔽了應真正凝視之物的存在。

某個夜晚，或許是清晨，我匆忙爬上地鐵的階梯。就在轉角處，與兩位少女不期而遇。她們短暫地愣住，確實是兩位少女。高個子的是姊姊，矮個子的是妹妹——這也無誤。但當我開始凝視她們，她們迅速失去「姊姊」、 「妹妹」、「少女」的特質。我急促地、盡可能大聲地喊著：「少女們、 姊妹們、建築物、工業區，這是少女啊！」若不這麼做，這些事物就會被 從我頭顱頂部下垂的那層塑膠面紗所吞噬——這層面紗才是將我眼前一切事 物還原為所謂〈風景〉的元兇，這點已不言自明。

當某物乍現於眼前，人往往將自身內在或意識形態投射其上、賦予意義，並用「風景」這層面紗將之覆蓋，從而無法看清真實的現實。為對抗此現象，中平選擇捨棄嚴格的取景與構圖，有時甚至不透過觀景窗，任憑直覺與偶然拍攝，即所謂的「模糊晃動攝影」實踐。他的目標不是捕捉風景，而是在風景將其覆蓋前搶先按下快門，揭露其背後真正存在之物。

進一步來說，中平的風景論也受到了松田政男提出的「作為權力批判的風景論」的影響。松田曾針對1968年連續槍擊事件犯人永山則夫的動機提出見解，認為永山是被國家權力強加的均質化風景所逼迫，才開槍試圖撕裂那景觀。中平亦呼應此說，指出：「若要撕裂被權力均質塗抹的『風景』，只需一聲槍響，一道閃爍的刀光便已足夠。」那份模糊晃動所帶來的粗暴感，正蘊含著如刀劍揮下的軌跡或子彈命中的衝擊。中平的攝影，是風景的屍體，是風景被殺害現場的記錄。 無止盡的貓捉老鼠遊戲

然而，「模糊晃動攝影」迅速樣式化與形式化，不僅無法再撕裂風景，反而變成模糊投射拍攝者內在的手段。具體實例便是中平對「發現日本(Discovery Japan)」（以下簡稱D・J）活動的猛烈批判。D・J 是國鐵（今JR）於1964年東京奧運與1970年大阪萬博後為避免旅遊熱潮冷卻而發起的觀光推廣活動。初期的幾張海報（如第2號、第3號），以模糊晃動手法拍攝結合了現代都市女性與鄉村風景的畫面，營造出「美麗日本」、「美好舊時代日本」、「故鄉」等難以具體指認的匿名式、抽象式圖像，激起觀者的旅遊情感。中平尖銳指出：「就如1970年萬博成功地轉移了我們對70年安保的關注，最終讓民族主義獲得歡呼，這個D・J活動亦具有將我們的視線自現實中的種種問題引開，並持續鼓吹民族主義的政治功能。」

對D・J的批判進而演變為對自己過去風格的反思與否定，中平捨棄原先的模糊晃動攝影，徹底排除個人情緒或意義投射，嘗試捕捉事物本來面貌。例如他在1971年巴黎青年雙年展中展出的裝置作品《循環——日期、地點、行為》，每天拍攝並當天沖印、展示，照片填滿整面牆、地板與接待台，營造出多視角、多元空間，對抗「我與世界」這種從單一視角理解世界的西方式遠近法構圖。他於1973年將這些實踐概念化為「植物圖鑑」，主張應該捕捉的是物對人的注視，而非人對物的情感投射。此過程中，中平的照片也逐步由模糊晃動轉為清晰、由夜晚轉向白晝、由黑白轉為彩色。

若硬要借用風景論的詞彙來說，中平可謂窮其一生，不斷切裂眼前出現的風景。然而，當他撕開破爛的面紗、試圖捕捉真實時，那景象轉瞬間又凝固成新的風景，視野再次被不可見的面紗覆蓋。若欲以另一手段再度撕裂，又會有新的風景湧現並阻擋視線。如此周而復始，宛如無盡的貓捉老鼠遊戲……

其實這不僅是中平作家的個人問題，或權力過於強大的證明，更關乎「風景」概念本身的侷限。文學評論家加藤典洋指出，「風景」的混亂來自於兩種相反行為同時被「風景」一詞涵蓋：一是將某地經驗對象化所形成的「風景化」；另一是風景本身被視為觀看對象而廣泛定著的「風景」。依此劃分，中平的攝影終究仍是「風景化」的範例——只是另一種尋找新風景的嘗試。即使是清晰的彩色照、多視角的裝置作品，一旦發表，就會被定型、樣式化、對象化，進入應被觀看的「風景」之列。只要繼續使用「風景」這一概念，我們就永遠無法真正逃脫風景。若真有自由的一刻，那也僅是舊有風景被新的風景取代前，那段短暫的過渡時期而已。

風景的殘骸——回顧展《中平卓馬 火―氾濫》

自2024年2月6日至4月7日，在東京國立近代美術館舉辦了中平卓馬的回顧展《中平卓馬 火―氾濫》（策展人為攝影評論家暨攝影史學者增田玲）。對這場展覽，我懷有一絲擔憂——是否會將中平卓馬整個人生對象化，作為��種凝固成型的「風景」來呈現？從模糊晃動的攝影風格到「植物圖鑑」的創作，歷經急性酒精中毒導致的失憶，最終成為如純粹攝影機般，持續記錄現實的偉大攝影家——這樣的神話。或者，被視為投入與「風景」之間一場注定無法獲勝（同時也無法完全敗北）的戰鬥之中、悲劇又英雄的攝影家——這種浪漫化的想像。如果將中平對風景不斷切裂的苦行姿態加以通俗化，那他也可能被歸類為「一位不斷逃離陳腔濫調表現的攝影家」，成為另一種陳腔濫調。

然而，這些不安終究只是杞人憂天。毫無諷刺地說，在展場中，我一張也沒有看到能被稱為「如實記錄現實」的照片，也幾乎沒有見到任何企圖偽裝那類影像的展示設計。映入眼簾的，是龐大的風景殘骸——中平所切裂、撕成破布的風景面紗的碎片，有的作為「作品」，有的則作為「資料」或「記錄」呈現。

之所以產生這樣的印象，是因為展場中陳列的，多半並非強調藝術品獨一性與原真性的底片或原始印刷品，而是刊登於雜誌或書籍封面、裝置藝術的記錄照片等——這些反而強調攝影為複製技術媒介之性質的物品。其中甚至包含了一些在二���書店或拍賣網站上仍可購得的資料（雖然可能價格偏高）。這些大量生產的媒體，有些甚至原本就不以長期保存為前提，有的會被隨意翻閱、塗鴉、裁剪。借用電影與電視研究者保羅・格雷因奇（Paul Grainge）的用語，這類媒介可稱為「短暫媒體（Ephemeral Media）」。

“Ephemeral”這個詞原意是短暫、稍縱即逝，在媒體研究中還帶有邊緣性、一次性與可拋棄性等含義。或者，為了更進一步強調這些短暫媒體雖薄弱但仍具有物質性的特質，也許應採用電影與媒體研究者阿梅莉・海斯蒂（Amelie Hastie）提出的「殘骸（Detritus）」概念——原意為「碎片」或「有機堆積物」*。

將中平的照片視為「風景的殘骸」，其意義之一在於，將這些影像作為過去實踐過程中所產生的副產物或廢棄物來對待，有助於避免過度神話化與理想化，同時分析當時人們所處的「權力＝風景」的動態樣貌，以及對其各種抵抗實踐的方式。

中平經常選擇以偽裝成他所刊登媒體的方式呈現自己的攝影。舉例來說，在名為〈囚禁之旅〉的報導中，他在看似觀光地的照片角落加上說明文字，例如「就像DISCOVER JAPAN海報中那樣的摩登打扮」、「再次不斷拍攝證據照片，反覆獲得安心」等，對觀光客的視線加以諷刺。

表面上看來，這與中平自己曾批判攝影被用作語言插圖的言論似乎相互矛盾，但他並不執著於原則與主張的一貫性，而是優先因應「權力＝風景」每次變形後的樣貌，展開如游擊戰般的實踐——偽裝成敵人、寄生於敵人體內，從內部動搖、破壞之。

I'd love to read the novel version but I'm certain 烈火浇愁 and 残次品 are beyond my reading ability as of 3/2025, priest's novel 默读 which is a regular modern setting only became possible to extensively read 12/2024. So I don't think I could handle a sci fi setting yet).

半夜衣寒 dmbj fanfic by 夏灬安兰 (extensively read, I just really like this person's writing style, and their writing is easier than priest for me to read and just perfect for me? I really enjoy their plots. This author's fanfics are who I credit for getting used to grammar in long sentences and getting used to "intuitively" understanding it, and for starting to do those kind of reading inferences of what is implied but not explicitly stated. Such as picking up character moods from physical descriptions, rather than words about their mood, and picking up hints about the ghost cases that hint things about characters in the stories as parallels. And I picked up familiarity with a ton of common adjectives and 4 hanzi descriptives from this author).

默读 (20 chapters in December 2024, looking up around 5 words a chapter. I didn't read much in 2024 just some random manhua chapters - I'm sad bilibili comics app is gone as I used to read several manhua on there. Does anyone know other apps or sites to read chinese manhua on? I can look up manhua I like, but I don't know where to find other manhua by genre and explore new ones. Some rereading of stuff I like, a handful of chapters in some danmei I was trying to decide if I liked)

Handsome Siblings (so hard lol I only watched 2 episodes, tried to watch 3-4 months into learning, looked up about 10 words an episode)

xin xiao shi yi lang (Zhu Yilong is in it, got through 5 episodes, took intense focus to follow it at the time so I didn't get far, I tried watching this maybe 4-5 months into learning, looked up around 5 words an episode)

Granting You a Dreamlike Life (15 episodes, looked up about 5-10 words an episode, watched around 6 months into learning and was the first show I could watch without pausing to re-read the captions a ton)

Till Death Tear Us Apart (technically I watched this with english subs so I looked up 'all' words, but I paused and read almost all the chinese subtitles for most of the episodes, this was good practice while I was also reading Graded Readers)

Guardian (rewatched in chinese, I watched this so many times with english subs I know the plot and most lines well)

Anti Fraud League (I think I watched 4 episodes, for Xiao Yuliang, probably the first cdrama I tried to watch only in chinese since it had no english subs, I had to watch in 10-20 minute chunks because I was focusing so hard it was exhausting)

Word of Honor (watched about 1 year into learning? I had read the beginning of the novel before, I had seen the initial episodes with english subs, and I was watching people react so I was getting a LOT of repetition. I ended up watching chinese only version of the episodes - since english subtitles weren't always done as quickly, then rewatching with the english sub when it came out. I managed to follow the main ideas of the plot on the episodes I watched in chinese first, then I'd find out a few days later all the details about the stuff Wen Kexing said... because I was barely hanging on in chinese whenever he'd get poetic. I had significant familiarity with the story or else I don't think this could've been understandable at 1 year)

Humans cdrama adaptation (Ma Tianyu is in this! I love his acting! Also I loved the BBC version of Humans, I love stories about androids, sci fi, so this was super fun! I watched this maybe 1.5 years into learning and it required about normal focus to watch, was not draining to follow, I looked up almost no words)

Ice Fantasy 2 (I've only watched a few episodes, but they feel almost as easy to watch as english as long as there's chinese subtitles. I couldn't find Ice Fantasy 2 with english subs anywhere. The first season of Ice Fantasy is also quite doable to follow, it's very simple for a xianxia language wise, easier than The Untamed. I love this show, because it's a bunch of tropes I love, but I don't think that'll be true for everyone lol)

Bureau of Transformer (first time I watched was with english subs on iqiyi, but then iqiyi took it off, and so I've rewatched 1-2 times in chinese only. I love this show to pieces. A bit harder to watch than something like Humans, but still mostly fine to watch with no word lookups, especially once I was past 1.5 years into learning and especially because it has chinese subtitles).

Sparrow (watched 2 episodes with chinese subtitles, I could follow the main idea without looking anything up, but I felt like I was missing enough details for it to be frustrating, tried watching at around 2 years so maybe I should give it another shot)

Justice in the Dark (was idk 3 years into learning? Could follow mostly fine with chinese subtitles, miss some details. Now as in 2025? Can follow with just audio and no chinese subtitles fine but takes a lot of focus, missing a lot of details. I have seen it multiple times though which helps. With chinese subtitles, now in 2025, almost as easy to follow as an english show, much like Humans cdrama was)

The Bad Kids (tried to watch this 1 year in, 3 years in, and I guess now 5 years into learning? First time I tried to watch with chinese subs, it felt a bit too hard, I think because there's less dialogue so the words they say ARE more important if you can't understand a particular word. At 3 years in, fine to follow, but I just didn't click with it. Now? Still fine, can watch it without chinese subtitles but I miss some details so it feels harder)

If you're into a particular danmei author, a LOT of danmei novels go from 100k-500k characters a piece. ErHa is like 1.6 million words on it's own. If you have a favorite danmei author, you can just start going through their writing, which will have similar writing style and therefore be easier than using novels from separate authors.

第1章

A fic with an old-fashion "evil will be rewarded with evil" idea and the MC had killed so many people with the aid of the "system" (as in the computer/game system). The only thing with this author is that they tended to put the fic on long hiatus and then came back months later as a changed person and shifty completed the work. It is so good so far.
