Hikone Sawayama: summit & castle

It's not about what is there today, as much as it's about what was there. Sawayama was the original location of Hikone Castle, and it is quite possibly the most important castle in Japan to have been completely lost, as it was the castle of Ishida Mitsunari, the leader of the Western Army which lost the battle to unite Japan following the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. There are so few traces of the castle, no obvious tell-tale structures... This small altar may trace its roots back to the days of the castle, or maybe not, but this is just about it.

Sawayama Castle was thoroughly dismanted after 1600 following the defeat of Ishida, as the new lord of the area, Ii Naomasa, appointed by the victorious Tokugawa clan, relocated the castle to a smaller hill closer to Lake Biwa. Hikone Castle, which still stands today, basically recycled the materials from Sawayama, and the view of the "new" castle complex and the lake is the main draw for hikers today.

The summit offers good views of the mountains on the other side too, with the industrial complexes near Maibara, most noticeably Fujitec and their 170 m-tall elevator test tower, in the foreground.

雨が降る前から書き始めたはずなのに、気が付けば本降りに。 明日は冷え込むそうですので、皆さまどうぞお気をつけてお過ごしくださいね。

かつて滋賀県の彦根に、50年愛された「喫茶スイス」という喫茶と軽食のお店がありました。 残念ながら、店主の高齢や建物の老朽化のため2022年5月に閉店。 最後は連日長蛇の列で、整理券の配布が必要だったそうです。 三角屋根で蔦に覆われ、それはもう生命体のような出立ちのスイス。 そんなスイスの周りがどこの地方都市でもよく見るチェーン店やその看板に囲まれている写真を見た時に、バージニア・リー・バートンの『ちいさいおうち』を思い出しました。 滋賀県立大学教員の川井操さんが、直接ご案内に来てくれたことで出会えたこの本は、川井さんとパートナーの方とで立ち上げた「あしがる出版」の第一号です。 スイスの姿を写真家の金川晋吾さんが写し、縁のある人々のエッセイや、店主の伊藤さんご夫妻へのインタビュー、建築家でもある川井さんが引いたスイスの図面や、かつてのメニュー表… メニューを見て驚いたのは、その値段。 昭和52年から一度も変えなかった、その想いや努力も綴られます。 川井さんが大学生の頃から通ったスイスへの愛に溢れたこの本は、中川へ来てくださるお客さまに、きっと気に入っていただけるだろうなぁと思いました。 （しかもお話しする中でたくさんのご縁も感じたのです） 行ったことも、もちろんスイスの味を知るわけでもない私が、ゆかりの人々の言葉を読み、写された写真を見てなんだか泣きそうな気持ちになったのは、同じような体験があるからだなぁと、かつて松本にあった数々の名店が頭に浮かびました。 "ただのハンバーグではない。「スイスのハンバーグ」という固有名詞がある。自分だけのスイスの味。きっとみんながそう思っていたはずだ。" 寄稿されている建築家 辻琢磨さんの一文と、マメイケダさんの描く、その熱々で匂いがたちのぼるようなハンバーグの絵を見て、さぞ美味しかったのであろうなぁ…と想像してみる。 大好きな、���なからの馴染みの店が無くなってしまうという事はとても寂しいけれど、こんなに素晴らしい形で残るという事。 本という物が好きだなぁ、良いものだなぁと改めて、とてもシンプルに感動したのでした。 お出かけの際は是非、お手に取ってみてくださいね。

Finally made it to Shiga Prefecture! Hikone Castle is on the cute side as far as castles go, and the park around it is really beautiful (though not incredibly accessible to anyone with difficulty walking or climbing large stone steps, which is true of many historical sites in Japan). We were there at just the right time to see the samurai kitty mascot character Hikonyan 😍

I got pretty distracted by the swans. Heh.

From there, we drove to our campgrounds near Lake Biwa, which was just as beautiful as I had heard it would be.

Hikone Sawayama: base

Walking North along the railway from Hikone station, one reaches the base of the hiking trail up Sawayama. After passing Nagabayashi Inari-jinja, a typical shrine dedicated to the shintô deity of prosperity with its succession of red torii gates, several temples appear, featuring monuments to two historical figures of Hikone, Ishida Mitsunari and Ii Naomasa. More on them when we reach the top.

This is Ryôtan-ji Sanmon, the "gate to the mountain" which leads us to the grounds of Ryôtan temple and starting the short, sharp climb. As we begin, we are met with more popular Japanese deities: the Shichi-Fukujin, or Seven Lucky Gods.

Apparently Ryôtan-ji has a fantastic zen garden, but we missed it.

数年ぶりのゆるキャラ〜！かわいくて癒やされた☺️

ずっと会いたかったひゃくまんさんにも会えて、気になってたわるにゃんこ将軍も見れて最高😭😭😭

2日目のお茶会参加したくて、朝4時出発・教習以来の高速（笑）3時間ぶっ飛ばして7時半に到着したけど、ひこにゃんの回は売り切れ😭

でもしまねっこいる回参加できました！バリィさん回は姉チームに譲りました✨

並んでる時も前後の方とゆるキャラトークできて楽しかった！

娘も初の大きいイベント参加だったけど、かわいいかわいいって言って楽しんでくれたみたいでよかった☺️

初の屋内開催だったけど、これはこれで席があってステージ見やすくてよかった😆

来年はひこにゃんルームに泊まるぞ〜！
