hello hi this is unrelated to mwdh (sorry) but ive been meaning to get into tokusatsu for a while but i don't really know where to start...i watched a couple of power ranger shows in my youth but that's about it even tho the genre always fascinated me. do you have any recommendations

Almost every season of ultra is available on Tubi and some are on YouTube! The upcoming season I believe Omega should be airing Ina few months in you want to start there or Blazar is reaaalllyyy good, my favorite episode is Planet of Music. Unfortunately Blazar was region locked for US presumably bc of the new blueray release? so the official upload was reupped by someone else and it only has te dub and not the multilanguage (if you're not american u can probably find it on the official tsupro account with the multi language dub and sub instead)

Shin Ultraman is also on youtube and tubi for free! and I LOVE R/B, R/B is really good if you're more used to magigirl sensibilities bc the theme is about love and family and the main characters are just two brothers instead of part of a defense force, but it still has the Ultra magic even without the defense team setting.

For rider and sentai you're gonna have to sail the 7 seas for 99% of that cuz toei moment. Some are available on tubi for rider, Kuuga is one of the best seasons, don't watch it first unless you want to never enjoy anything else afterward 😂 it's truly nothing like that and rider will never be that way again.

I started with OOO for rider, and my first sentai was ToQger which is soooo good. I honestly don't recommend most reiwa sentai though as a starter. We're not in normal sentai territory so unless you like cars theres not much for ya in themes. I really loved Kiramager though (what if gemstones were cars) and i recently finished Magiranger and am watching Abaranger. If you watched Power Rangers then you might remember those two as Mystic Force and uhhh *looks at wiki* Dino Thunder!

You can also just watch stuff outside of that, I'd recommend Legend Heroes a korean tokusatsu based on romance of the three kingdoms!

Yes, after the urging of that last Anonymous ask and a few other followers, I watch the first episode of the Korean tokusatsu series Legend Hero of the Three Kingdoms (레전드히어로 삼국전).  My first impression is that is has a very Kamen Rider feel to it with the introduction of the main hero, the way he gets his powers and the story structure.  Specifically, it feels like a cross between Kamen Rider Ryuki and Kamen Rider Gaim.  Yes, this is a story of various powered heroes fighting each other to gain their wish much like Ryuki but with the more humorous tone of the early episodes of Gaim before the hammer fell.

I like the looks of the hero costumes and the main protagonist, Liu Bei reminds me a lot of Kouta from Gaim in personality if not circumstance.  He’s a frustrated martial artist, the heir to a school who is bullied and picked on by the current Master who is bitter and angry that he did not inherit the dojo. 

He slacks off on a lot of his duties and has to be kept in line by his best friend/fellow student Gongsun Zan.

One day while running errands, Liu Bei comes across a young woman named Xu Shu, who claims to be an angel.  She has been sent to Earth to find the Legend Heroes and give them their Hero Pieces, intelligent henshin items that grant them phenomenal powers.  

Xu Shu is adorable and I think she’s just the cutest thing I have seen since Poppy in Kamen Rider Ex-Aid.  She actually reminds me of her a lot. Anyway, she gives Lui Bei his Hero Piece, Guan Yu and warns him not to show it to anyone or he might be killed.

Well, unfortunately, bitter rival Master guy overhears Lui Bei talking to Guan Yu one day and attacks, revealing himself to the bull-themed Legend Hero Wang Kuang.

A fight ensues, Lui Bei tranforms for the first time and there is a pretty good fight.

Of the three Non-Japanese Tokusatsu series I have watched at the suggestion of my followers in the last few days, this one definitely has the highest production values and sense of polish. It is obviously aiming for an older audience than Dispatch!  K-Cops and a higher budget to boot.  It also has more story with the episode being about the same length as an episode of Kamen Rider instead of the 13-14 minutes for K-Cops.

It does a nice job of introducing us to the main character, some of his supporting cast, getting the very basics of the premise down and setting up the wider plot. I will definitely be coming back to this one.  You can check out all of the episodes subtitled in English on Youtube here X.

is tokusatsu popular in korea like in japan? i remember watching dino force brave a few years back which was like a korean version of kyoryuger. does korea make their own sentai like that or was it a one off thing?

It's hard to say whether something is popular or not. If you like it, you like it, but of course there are people who don't know it. There is Korean tokusatsu as well. Recently I watch Armored Saurus (아머드 사우루스) but instead I would recommend Legend Hero of Three Kingdoms (레전드히어로 삼국전) The relationship between Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang is very sweet 🥰 Please watch it for that purpose alone haha. I’m sorry if I am mistaken but it seems international viewing is possible. Follow my warning about the ending…. Well I was a student then but I remember crying in front of my parents in the living room 😄 My mom told me it was a happy ending but my tears wouldn’t stop. It's been a long time since I thought about this show, I really liked it. Oh now I want to make gif of it haha. Highly recommendation from me 👍

정확히는 특촬물은 만화가 아닌 드라마로 분류되지만…

요즘 유튜브에서 영상 보니까 괜찮은거같기도 하고 이게 그렇게 잘만들었대서 보는중임

근데 확실히 잘만들긴 했더라 약간 가면라이더 류우키 순화버전같음

한국에서 나왔다기엔, 더군다나 특촬물 노하우도 거의 없다시피함에도 불구하고 잘만들었음

진지할때 진지하고 나름 개그도 연령대를 생각하면 재밌는편이고

확실히 청소년~성인팬들도 많은지 한번은 팬미팅을 했는데 가보니까 9할이 10대 중반~30대 아조시들이었다는 후일담도 있음

진짜 예전부터 느낀거지만 애초부터 만화채널인 투니버스같은거 빼면 그 누구보다도 EBS가 혼모노들을 잘 아는거같더라

앞으로 EBS만 보겠습니다ㅠㅠ

Hey, you know how in a Kamen Rider series you will have a really interesting woman in the cast who always plays second fiddle to the male hero and there will always be some frankly b***s*** reason why she can’t transform.  You know like Kiriko in Kamen Rider Drive or Mai from Kamen Rider Gaim. If we do get a female Rider, they are either a villain, don’t transform until almost the end of the series or end up being sidelined, dying or losing their powers. Yeah, it’s frustrating.

I just got to episode 5 of the Korean tokusatsu Legend Hero Three Kingdoms (레전드히어로 삼국전) and lo and behold Gongsun Zan is given her own Hero Piece and transforms into the Legend Hero Zhao Yun!  Yeah, she is given the power by an Angel who isn’t happy that Lui Bei is winning all the time and Zan’s mad as hell at him for what seems to be shirking his duties at the Martial Arts School and (she thinks) intentionally cheating at a test to see who will be the True Successor to their mentor.

So, she starts out as an enemy but I have feeling she will end up as an ally soon once she realizes what is going on.  My big question though is, what is her wish? I didn’t write this up in my feelings on episode 1 (because it wasn’t revealed until episode 2) but the Dream Battle the Legend Heroes are fighting is literally for their dreams.  They are wagering their fondest wish, their greatest ambition and if they lose, they lose their dream forever and forget all about being a Legend Hero..

That’s nothing though.  The Hero Pieces are actually fighting because if their contracted partner wins the Dream Battle and gains their wish, the Piece will become human!  If their partner is defeated and their Dream destroyed, the Hero Piece turns to stone and dies!

Man, this is feeling more and more like a Gaim-type show.

Still, transforming female hero in episode 5!  I think I love you Legend Hero!

Edit:  I just noticed her hoodie is exactly the same as it was before except it has changed from pink to blue after her transformation!  Apparently being a Legend Hero gives you the power of instantly matching your hero color in your civilian outfits!
