Cultural Fashion: Toph's Ba Sing Se Dress

While Katara's Ba Sing Se dress takes pretty direct inspiration from early 20th-century Manchu fashion, Toph's party outfit is more varied in its sources. Toph's ensemble appears to be inspired by the look of late 19th-century aoqun (襖裙), literally meaning "robe-skirt" in Mandarin. Like aoqun, Toph's attire possesses a short standing collar, a rounded cross-collar (pianjin), intricate trim along the collar and sleeves, and moderately wide sleeves.

However, there are also a few differences between what Toph's wearing and a traditional aoqun. Most obviously, Toph's top (ao) is cut quite a bit shorter than a traditional aoqun top. Her skirt is also not pleated, unlike traditional Qing aoqun skirts. I believe this is due to Toph's party design taking partial inspiration from traditional Korean women's clothing (hanbok/한복). The top's fit is much closer to the cropped style of a jeogori (저고리) and the silhouette is very hanbok-like. I don't think there's a particularly deep reason for this; the traditional silhouette of an aoqun is very boxy, while hanbok silhouettes are comparatively more form fitting. Form fitting designs tend to be easier to animate.

Overall, the design is cute, but I would have preferred to see Toph in a more faithful aoqun. I think looser clothes embody Toph's personal style more. ^_^

Historical Korean Words Glossary

I am writing and have written quite a few Historical Korean fanfictions and so this post is a glossary for all of the different words that I leave untranslated. I do put all of the words I use in a fic at the bottom, but this is a big list of all of the ones I use and some pictures for reference. I will update this if I add a new word to a new fic.

None of the pictures are mine and I pretty much just found them on Google images.

NOTE: I did my best research with all of these and I'm not claiming they are 100% accurate, but this is just a list of how I use them so you know what I intended them to mean

Hangul 한글/韓㐎- the Korean alphabet we use today = 한글

Hanja 한자/漢字 - the old Korean characters derived from Chinese used prior to Hangul's creation = 漢字

Hanbok 한복/韓服 - traditional/historical clothing, most people think of women's dresses, but men's clothes were called this as well.

Goreum 고름 - the ties that fastened a top of a hanbok

Jeonbok 전복/戰服 - kind of like a long vest worn over a hanbok

Jeogori (1 = Male, 2 = Female) 저고리/赤古里 - the top/shirt part of a hanbok

Seokjeogori (3) 속저고리 - a shirt worn as an undergarment

Danryeong 단령/團領 - "round-collar robe", often worn by noblemen and members of the council, ministries, or other officials.

Sseugaechima 쓰개치마 - this is the extra-skirt looking garment women would wear over the heads.

Sokbaji (Left) 속바지 - pants-like undergarment, mostly worn by women under their chima

Sokchima (Right) 속치마 - basically a dress/skirt like undergarment

Gat (Left) 갓 - this is the hat that noblemen would wear, more specifically the ones that were black and made of mesh.

Jeongjagwan (Right) 정자관/程子冠 - a type of gat that noblemen would wear, it looks much like a pagoda.

Samo 사모/紗帽 - hats worn by government officials

Manggeon 망건/網巾 - the mesh-like headband men wore to hold their hair in place

Eunjangdo 은장도 - a silver dagger that many women wore as an accessory, mostly nobles.

Cheopji 첩지/疊紙 - a hair accessory worn by women, looks similar to a headband with a clip or pin in the middle.

Binyeo 비녀 - the long pin that would hold a woman's bun up, mostly used for married women.

Daenggi 댕기 - the ribbon that was tied around an unmarried girl's braid.

Norigae 노리개 - accessories that were tied to the goreum of women's handboks

Aigo 아이고 - kind of like an exclamation like "sheesh" or "geez", still used in modern times.

Gongju 공주/公主 - princess honorific

Gongjunim 공주님 - formal address for a princess

Hyungnim 형님- a more commonly used term historically for a man to an older brother or male friend.

Orabeoni 오라버니 - more archaic/historical word for older brother to a girl.

Unni 언니 - older sister to a girl

Dogil 독일 - Korean word for Germany, might not be completely accurate for the time.

Hanyang 한양/漢陽 - historical name for Seoul

Seong-jung 성중/城中 - area inside the fortress walls of Hanyang

Seongjeosimni 성저십리/城底十里 - area outside the fortress walls of Hanyang

Ming 大明 - during the time of the Ming dynasty of China, they referred to the country as Ming

Podocheong 포도청/捕盜廳 - essentially the Joseon era police.

Bujang 부장/部將 - a Lieutenant-level position in the Podocheong

Hwarang 화랑/花郞 - a group of young noblemen that became somewhat like educated knights in the royal palace from around the 6th century to the 11th. Also refers to a member of the Hwarang.

Gukseon 국선/國仙 - a chief officer of the hwarang

Wonsanghwa 원상화/原上花 - the first officer of the hwarang who is in charge of training in martial arts and combat

Sangseon 상선/上仙 - training officer of the hwarang

Nangdo 낭도/郎徒 - lowest members of the hwarang hierarchy and would form groups led by a hwarang

Gungnyeo 궁녀/宮女 - "Lady Officer of the Court" they were royal hand maidens or court ladies

Sanggung 상궁/尙宮 - manage the palace and the royal family

Nain 나인/內人 - assistant court ladies

Jimil Nain 지밀 나인/至密 內人 - waited on the King and/or Queen and their family

Sangjeong (Gungjeong) 상정 (궁정)/尙正 (宮正) - they managed and oversaw conduct, work and punishment of the Gungnyeo

Jeonjeong 전정/典正 - assistants or support for the sangjeong

Naesojubang 내소주방/內燒廚房 - Gungnyeo department for preparing meals

Jungin 중인/中人 - Upper Middle Class citizens

Sangmin 상민/常民 - Commoners/Lower Middle Class citizens

Chon 촌/寸 - historical unit of measurement, close to an inch

Mun 문/文 - Joseon Era Korean currency

Shinshi 신시/申時 - designation for the ancient Korean hours of the Monkey which is about 3-5 pm

Baduk 바둑 - Korean word for the Chinese game of Go

Pong 봉 - also known as a Bo staff used in martial arts, typically made of wood. (not 100% sure on the Korean spelling)

Yo 요 - Korean floor mattress

Oh I will absolutely be treating myself >:D I just had lunch with my parents!! I'll also probably watch a few shows on Netflix later, and maybe catch up on my reading lol.

The hanbok arrived yesterday!! The skirt... had some tiny holes...😅

We talked to the rental company and they gave us a full refund! Apparently the skirt had been used since the company first started business, so it's really old. They didn't see the holes before since they're REALLY small, but they said they'll have to throw it away now. They would have sent us a new skirt, but since school picture day is tomorrow, it wouldn't arrive on time.

I'll have to wear the skirt as is, but the holes are all on the mesh part & pretty much unnoticeable on camera anyway. And they're giving us 50% off on our next rental! So it's fine, mostly.....???🤷‍♀️ The 저고리 is fine, thankfully!

I'm deffo sharing photos though! I ended up getting a red skirt instead of pink like I wanted, but it's still v pretty haha.

아담 범죄 후 지금까지의 6천년 세상은 하나님의 창조 시간표에서 '0(제로)', '백지/白紙'의 시대 연속이었고 오직 <새 창조>만이 유의미, 오직 그 기록만 남을 것

사탄의 <색안경>으로 세상을 보면 안되는데 맨눈의 <성경>으로 세상울 인식해야 하는데

땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고 하나님의 신(성령)은 수면(물 위)에 운행(움직임)하셨다"(창 1:2). "물이 있으라" 하시지도 않았고 "땅이 있으라" 하시지도 않았고 단지 땅이 물에서 "드러나라"고만 하셨고 기존의 물을 나누시어 "하늘이라 칭/稱하셨다"고만 되어 있으니, 기존의 물에 기존의 땅이 풀어져 있었고 "땅이 혼돈하고 공허하다" 했으니, '이전 창조'의 세계가 '와해'되어 있었던 것이 명백하다. 그 당시 창조되었던 계명성(새벽별)들 중 그룹(cherub) 하나가 범죄했기 때문에 벌어진 결과였던 것. 그래서 성경에 기록된 대로의 "6일 창조".

지금은 영물/靈物들의 일부와 아담(인간)의 범죄로 그 '6일 창조'는 다시 '와해'되고(그 이전 세계는 '물'로 망하고 지금 세계는 '불'로 망하게 예정되어) 그래서 성경에 예언된 대로 "새 하늘과 새 ���"(벧후 3:13/계 21:1)이 대기 중인 것. 이상은 '망하는 세상'과 '망하지 않는 세상'과의 대칭이니, 망하는 세상은 '물로써 망함'과 '불로써 망함'으로 대칭되고, 망하지 않는 세상은 다음 말씀에 해당되니 곧 "나 여호와가 말한다 나의 지을 <새 하늘과 새 땅>이 내 앞에 <항상 있을 것>"(사 66:22).

그러므로 오늘날 우리가 처해 있는 이 "6일 창조"는 "새 하늘과 새 땅" 창조 이전의 "혼돈", "공허", "흑암", "깊음", "물"(천하가 다 노아 홍수 당시와 같은 물 바다)로서의 참담 그 자체임을 똑바로 직시/直��해야. "6일" 창조 이전의 "혼돈", "공허", "흑암", "깊음", "물"이었던 그 패턴(pattern) 그대로에 해당되는 것 외 아무 의미가 없으니, 20세기 이후 소위 "찬란한 과학 문명"이란 것은 한낱 주검(송장) 위에 색동 비단 치마 저고리 입혀 놓은 것과 같을 뿐임. 죽음이니까 죽음 일색일 따름이지 그것이 만년을 간다 한들 생명일 수는 없으니까!

더욱 비극적인 것은 이러한 부자연, 부자유의 허망한 동물적 육체뿐만 아니라, 생명의 성령의 이름으로 나오지 않는 그 무엇이든 다 철통 같은 악령들의 지배, 간섭, 통제에 포로되어 꼭두각시로 움직이는 일거수일투족이라는 비극적 실상인즉 이 어찌 "혼돈", "공허", "흑암", "깊음", "물구덩이"가 아니리요! 실상을 제대로 안다면 365일 24시간 통곡과 애처로운 흐느낌으로만 날을 보내고 밤을 지샐 일이다. 악령들에게 눈이 감겨 깜깜하여(행 26:18) 지척울 분간 못하니 악령들이 속이고 몰아가는 그대로 희희덕거리고 원수들의 장단에 놀아나는 비극만의 연출인 것이다! 이것이 일말의 거짓 없는 지금까지의 인류사 6천년 세월의 실제의 맨모습(실상)인 것이다.

우리가 알아야 하는 것은, 아담이 범죄하지 않아 정상 상태로 "6일 창조"가 지속되어 나간다 해도 아담 후대의 일부 인간들 및 영물(스랍과 그룹이 아닌 에덴 동산에서 아담을 보좌하도록 창조하신 "천사")들의 일부(지금의 사탄 일당처럼) 범죄는 필연일 것이니 어차피 '불로 망할 세상'임은 정해진 것이나, 문제가 된 것은 그 어느 누구도 아닌 아담 자신이 범죄하여 죽어버리는 서슬에 현재와 같은 6천년의 대형 사고로 홍역을 치르는 것이다. 허나 그 기한도 드디어 끝나 우리의 구원자(예수) 주님이신 "마지막 아담"께서 세상에 다시 오심으로써 비로소 아담 통치가 이제 시작되려는 시점인 것이다. "6일 창조"를 마치신 하나님이 쉬시려고 하실 즈음에 아담 죽음이라는 이런 사달이 났으니 아담 통치가 6천년이나 늦추어진 것.

고로 그 '아담 시대'의 천년 세월을 앞둔 우리는 모든 실상을 알았으니 어리석게 악령들의 농간에 꺼둘리지 말고 놀아나지 말고 하나님의 아들들다운 품위와 체통을 지켜 하나님의 "맏아들"로서의 우리 주님의 발자취를 따라 사람들 구원해내는 일에만 오직 전념할 것이다. 우리의 머리이신 주님께서 어떤 본을 보이셨는가. 친히 사형장으로 나가시는 사형수의 모습이셨던 것. 왜냐면 천하 사람이 다 하나님 앞에서 (아담 범죄로 죽은 자이니까, 죄 값은 죽음 밖에 없으니까, 생명 아니면 죽음이라는 대칭성 즉 양면성의 짝의 법칙에서) 사형수 죄인이기에. 그 사형수의 모습으로 그 위치에 함께 있어야 함께 생명에로 인도할 수 있음이다.

이 함께 하는, 하나되는, 한 몸을 이투는(짝의 법칙에 기반한 생명의 법칙이 "한 몸"됨에 있으므로ㅡ고전 12: 26) 것 외에는 달리 방법이 없기 때문. 전쟁에서 이기는 방법은 사즉생/死則生(죽고자 하면 살고)생즉사/生則死(살고자 하면 죽는다)의 방법 외 없는 것과 같은 것. 살면 함께 다 살고 죽으면 함께 다 죽는 공동체 의식, '우리' 의식이 이상향적 삶의 생명의 법칙.누구는 부하게 태어나 부자로 살고 누구는 없는 자로 태어나 없이 사는 것은 하나님의 애초 창조가 생명 아닌 죽음으로 일체가 망가져버린 흉물스러운 죽음의 꼴불견인 것. 하나님의 창조의 뜻은 평등, 평균에 있는 것. 머리와 몸으로서의 "한 몸"됨에 있으니까. 이 죽음의 세상에서 나 혼자 살고자 하는 욕심을 단죄하시는(요 12:25) 이유가 여기 있는 것이다.

Cultural Fashion: Song (And Her Mother) Pt. 1 - Clothing

Song and her mother are wearing hanbok (한복), traditional Korean clothing. The specific type of hanboks they’re wearing are known as chima jeogori (치마 저고리).

The skirts they’re wearing are called chima (치마). Chima are wraparound skirts that tie at the chest and typically possess a bell-shaped silhouette. It’s worth noting that, unlike the girl in the comparison photo, Song does not wear an underskirt or sokchima (속치마). Instead, she sports a pair of Korean trousers or baji (바지). This is actually a great little detail, as she likely began wearing pants to keep dirt and bacteria away from her burns. Traditionally, baji is men’s wear, so her choice of undergarment automatically draws attention to her legs for those familiar with hanbok fashion.

The upper garments they’re wearing are called jeogori (저고리), specifically hoijang jeogori (회장저고리) or “short jacket with matching trim”. Their particular hojiang jeogoris are fashioned in the late Joseon Dynasty (19th century) cropped style. The trim around the collar is known as the git (깃) and the trim around the sleeves is known as kkeutdong (끝동), while the ribbon that ties the top together is known as the goreum (고름). It’s also worth noting that jeogori sleeves are generally narrow rather than draping, unlike many hanfu and kimono sleeves.

🇰🇷 Hanbok(한복), Korean Traditional Costume 🇰🇷

Hi! This is Admin Hee here. I’ll introduce you the traditional costume of Korea, 한복(Hanbok).

We wear these clothes on special day such as wedding day, traditional holiday like new year's day. On New Year's Day, we wear Hanbok and make a New Year's bow to our parents, grandmother, grandfather, and other family members. Then we get a new year's cash!

Hanbok has a history of over 1600 years. During the Three Kingdoms Period(삼국시대), there were saek-dong skirts(색동치마), long skirts for the upper classes, and short skirts for the lower classes. During the United Silla Period, they were made of fine cloth, similar to modern skirts. During the Goryeo Dynasty(고려시대), the length of the skirt was determined by the length of the jeogori.

- Classification of Hanbok

For women : 

Big skirt - Chima(치마)

Short coat - Jeogori(저고리)which is the top of Hanbok. Up to this point, it is the basic attire of hanbok.

Outer coat - Magoja(마고자)

For men : 

Big pant - Baji(바지)  

Long top - Jeogori(저고리) 

Overcoat - Durumagi(두루마기) which you can think of as a ceremonial robe and a kind of winter clothes

Now, the first thing about Hanbok's excellence is beauty. The harmony of the color and the flow of the line is very beautiful. It has five-sided color like yellow, blue, white, red and black. Through these colors, Hankbok represents the beauty of fancy and elegant. Second, it possess practicality. Since the shape is A-line and has a blank space, it can cover the disadvantage of your body shape. Also even if your body shape changes, you can easily change the clothes form of it. In addition, it is a well-established costume suitable for the climate and lifestyle. For the last, Hanbok is economical. It is well-ventilated and made of eco-friendly materials. It also has activity and functionality.

Nowadays, there is an improved Hanbok(개량 한복). These are made in medium length top, easily washable material. Do you guys know BTS Jungkook? He is famous for fancier of Hanbok. Further on, not only Jungkook but also BTS showed the Hanbok. In the music video of Idol, they wore Hanbok designed designed colorful and fancy.

“How you like that?” I think many of you might have heard of this song! This is the latest release of BLACKPINK's new song. As you can see the picture they are wearing fancy clothes. Don't forget it. This is Hankbok! I've read an article that many people think of this dress as a Japanese kimono. But remember this! It is korean Hanbok!
