LIfe’s Harshest Blow
As expected, North Korean [television] led its Wednesday programming with a series of reports on the Tuesday summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump.
The coverage was led by a report anchored by Ri Chun Hee and was broadcast at 15:09; 17:00; 20:00 and 22:07.
Ri Chun Hee presents news of Kim Jong Un’s meeting with Donald Trump on Korean Central TV on June 13, 2018.
But, the broadcaster didn’t use any still images to illustrate the report so unless viewers had seen the Rodong Sinmun, they still hadn’t seen an image of Trump and Kim shaking hands or standing next to each other.
Despite North Korea’s constant bashing of the U.S., the president rarely if ever appears on screen so many North Koreans are probably unaware of what Trump looks like.
(See yesterday for more details on North Korea’s slow-motion media coverage.)

Nothing for his clip reel yet...
How did North Korean state television’s coverage of the Trump-Kim summit play? Martyn Williams was watching, and if you’re not already familiar with Korean Central Television, the answer may surprise you: Call back on Thursday.
North Koreans eager to hear news from Singapore of the summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump will have to wait a little longer.
On Tuesday at 3pm, moments after the two leaders had signed their agreement, Korean Central Television came on air as scheduled. After the obligatory national anthem and Songs of both Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, the broadcast aired a special news bulletin.
But it wasn’t about the meeting with Trump. It mirrored the coverage that had been all over the front page of the Rodong Sinmun that same day: Kim’s nighttime stroll around Singapore.
It was broadcast at 15:10; 17:00; 20:00 and 22:10. That fits the typical model for special news reports on the activities of Kim Jong Un.
The previous day, KCTV had included still images in the first two airings of the special news then dropped them in subsequent broadcasts. On Tuesday it didn’t both with still images or video, so while newspaper readers saw Singapore at night, TV viewers didn’t.
Looking ahead, the summit talks with Trump and the agreement are likely to be the major news on Wednesday and, if KCTV can get its editing done fast enough, viewers might be able to watch the first video report on the summit on Thursday.
He also posted a summary of Sunday and Monday’s coverage, as little as there was. Sunday’s write-up in particular is very telling about how these things usually go in the hermit kingdom, especially the complete absence of live (or even timely) TV coverage.
On the day that both Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump arrived in Singapore for talks that could change the course of the nation, North Korean state TV and the state-run news service were silent about any of the events taking place in South East Asia.
State media rarely reports on the activities of Kim Jong Un in advance so the silence isn’t a surprise, but it does serve to highlight the closed society that North Koreans live in. Because foreign media isn’t permitted into the country, state media services are able to cover events at their own pace.
Part of the lack of advance coverage of what Kim Jong Un is doing in advance is often seen as a security measure, keeping his whereabouts confined to a small number of people, but it’s also partly so the state can shape the narrative on any event once they’ve seen it’s outcome.
By not telegraphing expectations, any result can be portrayed as victorious and the plan all along. This avoids precisely the situation President Trump has worked himself into, at first talking about complete denuclearization and mentioning a Nobel Prize, and now trying to walk it back a bit while deflecting some who are already calling the reduced aims a failure.
