Finding out who the killer is is not the point of the murder in the opening scene.

For the third time my hands alter the female protagonist before the novel even begins.

In her palms his mysterious chiseled form is inspired.

The oracle saw him twice, cautioned her against caution: “Be him,” she told her when she noticed fear in the lumen of narrative asking questions about him.

The female protagonist visits him in the mornings, taps shyly on the window, sweeps the street with a glance. (Did anyone see her?)

The plants on the windowsill lean in and bloom for him then share with her the waiting and anticipation.

He’s the protagonist who doesn’t play his role well: he opens the door, grumbles about a dream interrupted.

Something has prepared him for absence but he prolongs her presence with a Rai song: “I love you, woman.”

“He loves me,” she smiles to herself. “She’s sweet,” he smiles to himself.

My hand takes off the woman’s face and hangs it by the door: “Be good while I’m gone. Don’t make a fuss over a fleeting present. And if need be put on a clown’s face and don’t work yourself up.”

The female protagonist doesn’t cry as she shuts the door behind her. She addresses her grievance to the narrators:

“There’s no time on which my body leans that does not fall. I don’t have what pleases critics. What remains is chatter.”

*라이위 음악: " ... Rai 음악에 대해 설명하자면, 라이위는 1920년 지금의 알제리 오랑(Oran) 지역의 하층민들로부터 시작됐다고 한다. 프랑스는 식민통치 때 오랑의 거주자 4만 5000명을 학살하기도 했다. 독립 전쟁 초기에는 오랑지역의 베두인족 양치기들이 금속성 드럼의 일종인 Guellal(아랍의 다부카와 약간 유사)과 Gaspa(장미나무로 만든 피리)로 반주를 했다. 당시에는 주로 남성들이 불렀으나 20세기 말에는 주로 여성들이 부르는 장르가 됐다.

라이위의 언어적 의미는 '의견', '관점', '목표' 등과 같은 뜻을 가지고 있다. 또한 본질적으로 탈식민지 운동(脫植民主義, Postcolonialism)의 틀 속에서 여러 문화권의 특징들이 혼합되면서 하이브리드적인 성격을 띠며 발전해왔다.

라이위의 가사는 대부분 유럽의 식민 통치에 반대하는 내용이거나 질병으로 고통 받는 하층민의 애환 같은 사회적 이슈를 다루고 있다. 때문에 유명한 라이위 가수들은 라이위에 대해 대부분 이렇게 말한다.

"나는 늘 삶의 보편적 문제와 사회적인 문제, 그리고 저항에 대해서 노래해왔다. 그래서 라이위 음악은 항상 저항음악이었고 미래를 지향하며 부르는 노래라고 할 수 있다.""

SongFacts:

It’s been a year since Mimiirose made their debut with the promising Rose. That’s a long hiatus for a rookie group, making follow-up single Flirting quite important. Listening to their first album, Mimiirose’s potential was obvious. Now’s the time to capitalize on that and remind fans why they’re a vital part of the K-pop landscape.

Flirting draws upon the strong vocals and mature sound of Mimiirose’s debut, but the song isn’t as engaging this time. Given the right material, I think this group could be incredible. You can hear that in pieces of Flirting, but the melodies don’t quite capitalize on their strengths. The chorus aims for “soaring” but veers off the rails with a higher tone that feels combative rather than cathartic. It’s almost as if the structure needed more build and restraint. As it stands, too much of Flirting comes across as melodic shouting.

On the plus side, is the pre-chorus. Prodded along by electronic guitar, this segment offers the taste of drama that the rest of the song lacks. The thumping percussion is also effective, and it would have loved to hear even more of it as Flirting moves toward its finale.

"땅게라 땅게로 개비 비개비"

며칠 전 한 밀롱가에서 십여 년 풍물을 했다는 분을 만나 10분 정도 대화…라기 보단 내가 평소 궁금했던 질문 몇 개를 일방적으로 던짐.

우선은 전설적 꽹과리 연주자 김용배를 실제 풍물 하는 사람들은 어떻게 인식하고 있는지가 궁금해서 물어봄. 이분은 화려함보다는 정확함을 추구하는 쪽이었단 답변을 듣고 약간 의외였다. 왜냐하면 건축가 김수근이 설계한 '공간'에서 첫 출범한 '사물놀이' 연주는 김용배(꽹과리)와 김덕수(장구)가 서로 지지 않으려고 용호상박 물고 물리는 과정에서 말 그대로 '미친 연주'가 나왔다는 평가를 여러 책에서 봤기 때문. 한편으론 그가 남긴 씨디를 내가 들었을 때 좀 밋밋하다 느낀 점에선 화려한 쪽은 아니란 게 납득은 됐고.

그다음 의도적으로 "농악" 대신 "풍물"이라고 쓰고 있는 게 느껴져 농악이란 말에 무슨 문제가 있냐 물어보니, 일제 강점기 잔재로 보고 있다고 함. 크로스체크가 필요한 사안이긴 하나 일단은 존중해서 앞으론 나도 농악 대신 풍물이라 쓰려고.

마지막으로 '개비/비개비'란 용어를 아냐고 물어보니 모른다는 답변 들음. 개비는 어릴 때부터 남사당패, 무속 집안 등에서 태어나고 성장해 전통 음악이 몸에 배 있는 자를 가리키고, 그 외 나머지를 (국악 전공자라 할지라도) 퉁쳐서 비개비로 보는 배타적 용어다. 출처는 도올 김용옥 씨가 쓴 어느 책이다. 이분이 젊은 시절 박범훈(피리 전공 및 국악관현악단 지휘자면서 중앙대 총장할 때 비리로 구속됐던 분) 씨와 장기간 교류한 거로 아는데, 아마도 박범훈 씨 집안에서 내려오는, 아주 제한된 지역에서만 쓰이던 말인 듯?

'땅게로', '땅게라'는 한국 내 땅고 추는 사람들 사이에선 단순히 땅고 추는 남자, 여자란 의미일 뿐이지만, 알젠틴에선 어릴 때부터 땅고 문화에 푹 젖어 자란 사람들을 가리키는 특별한 의미가 있는 거로 주워들음. 그래서 '땅게로스 = 알젠틴 개비'란 의미로 구라 내지는 썰을 풀어 볼까 했었는데 풍물 하는 사람들조차 모르는 말이라고 하니 포기. 이유는 적어 놔야 나중에 뻘짓 안 할 거 같아서 기록 남김.
