#헬반도

A part of reasons why many native Koreans call South Korea "Hell Peninsula (헬반도)" is humidity in summer. Funny thing is, because of the climate change, we haven't experienced severe humidity, which is very characteristic of usual late spring ~ early summer in Korea due to rainy season, in the last decade. But since there was a slight adjustment in running factories, usage of fossil fuels, and etc. thanks to the pandemic, while still lacking in environment to return to anything close to normal, we are having some true humid early summer this year. I don't think there is an official assessment, but at least that is what I and my sister who is living in another city sense.

What I love and missed about this humid season is the smell. It's so packed full with green and flush red smell it's suffocating.

It is such a shame that I live in a rather densely crowded area so that I cannot take off masks and smell it anytime I am out.

But thankfully I live near a mountain, where I sometimes go for a hike alone in the morning or the night when there aren't many people. And the forest in the entrance to the hiking trail is small but sufficiently endowed with green things so I can sense the difference in the weight of air as I walk toward the forest even without removing the mask.

As soon as I lower my mask when I arrive at the entrance (after made sure there isn't anyone around me) I am smacked by the cacophony of every smell that lingers in the air of slightly damp forest. The black soil, moisture in the air, pine sap, broken grass, trickle of water on rocks, budding summer flowers on trees, anything that grows and emerging, livid with life, angry to get out more, whispering and shouting. The euphoria of sudden over stimulation of life in the nostril. I stand stunned for few dozen seconds.

If I had seeing-eyes this is probably the time when small evil creatures and spirits sprout from grounds and bushes whatnot. The mountains and forests are full of unsettling and eerie atmosphere, I will not be surprised if I see a small unnatural creature in the corner of my eye or tricked to walk round and round in the same spot for an hour (hence I do not enter the mountain proper after sun-down: some of my previous friends who were somewhat "connected" otherworldly told me while I have zero power in seeing or sensing things, I have strong energy of which spirits are drawn toward, so I am not taking chances.)

There is a corner in the forest that does not feel right. Even in the daylight.

But the smell. I swore I smelled lilac there this spring. It was so strong like having a cluster of lilac flowers shoved under your nose. The forest has lilacs but there wasn't any near the creepy spot. I am pretty sure it's a trap. Making people like me to stop and inspect or appreciate the mysterious aroma of which origin is not within vision. Creepy but if one is wise enough not to fall for such things, it's fine, I hope.

It's scary and wonderous.

Breathing in all the unstable, vivacious, screaming loudness with the feeling of being watched by eyes that are not there.

But that's what is so captivating about this strange season that everything is in its early youth, even the spirits.
