[ While I think Jeff enjoys electronic music a la Daft Punk, especially as he gets older, I also really enjoy the amount of music that the Earthbound soundtrack uses and samples, and I try to incorporate that into the kids' music tastes.

Ness and Jeff are both big Beatles fans, and Jeff also really likes The Who. I also think Ric Ocasek's Keep on Laughin' is one of Jeff's favorite songs. Ness is more the Beach Boys fan, which is why Deirdre plays in the Cave of the Past since Giygas is obsessed with him, lol. ]

Someone is secretly in love with Jeff. Who is it and how does he feel about them?

[ It's Tony, though that's really not much of a secret for most people who know the two of them. Tony's very verbal about his affection for Jeff and shows it in his actions as well: he fusses over Jeff like a parent would, gives him lots of physical affection and compliments, and spends all of Earthbound worrying about Jeff's safety and begging Ness and party to make sure he's okay.

The Chosen Four know that Tony likes Jeff, as I'm sure a fair portion of the boys at Snow Wood do, too. Jeff doesn't have a clue.

However, the feelings are mutual. Jeff has always cared deeply for his best friend, but didn't really grasp that the feelings were romantic until the War Against Giygas. He'd like to tell Tony how he feels, and tried to stutter it out in Stonehenge, but he was so anxious he couldn't go through with it. ]

"Well, that's a more difficult question than it really appears; I have several best friends. If you asked me between Ness, Paula, and Poo which one of them was the best friend, I couldn't possibly tell you.

So I hope it's no offense to them, because they're all as close to me as family, but... Tony.

[ Jeff isn't much tempted when it comes to vices like greed or power. None of the Chosen Four are, I think, and their strong will in that area is why they were probably chosen in the first place.

However, following rules is something that Jeff is not the best at, especially when they conflict with what he thinks is best. He doesn't have much moral qualms with stealing chemistry equipment, for example, because he justifies it with the idea that he's using it for a just cause.

And yes, he did end up stealing from the Snow Wood science lab to make another invention project, and was very peeved when caught and put in detention for it. ]

[ Though Jeff cares deeply about the welfare of animals, he's not a vegetarian; in fact, he really enjoys meat-based dishes. I've mentioned it before, but Jeff really does not like overly sweet or rich foods, so he doesn't tend to eat much desserts that aren't on the lighter side. He really enjoys savory or salty flavors.

Snow Wood's meals, I imagine, are pretty decent, considering it's a prestigious boarding school, but there's something about a home cooked meal that Jeff really enjoys - maybe it's that he doesn't get them often, or that they feel fresher. But those are his favorite - he does like an instant meal or an unhealthy snack, though, since they're great conveniences when he invents late into the night. ]

I need to talk about this song in the earthbound soundtrack.

It’s part of when you first boot up the game, where it shows the evil flying saucers attacking the gas station before the title screen - and holy fuck, after listening to it again, i have thoughts.

Yes, it’s the sample that Toby used for megalo strike back, and it’s oddly satisfying on its own.

But you can hear.... people screaming in the background. That coupled with the music sounds so haunting, then put with the imagery of the flying saucers attacking buildings, which never happens in game...

I think this could be an image of the future where all is devastation that Buzz Buzz tells Ness about - in 10 years towns are reduced to rubble by Giygas’ ships. The song’s even called “the Evil Giygas Attacks!”

Then at the end it kind of speeds up and gets quieter before the title screen... like someone’s speeding away - or time traveling.

WHEN WAS THIS DIAGNOSED? probably some time after the war against Giygas. I think he probably was diagnosed with trauma as a toddler after being removed from Dr. Andonuts’ care, but I need to do more research on that.

LEVEL OF EDUCATION: when he’s an adult, he gets a master’s in chemical and mechanical engineering, he gets a PhD in mechanical engineering, and then gets another master’s in orthotics / prosthetics.

LEVEL OF SELF-ESTEEM: Not high at all. He’s pretty desperate for verbal praise from others, and thinks pretty lowly of himself.

GIFTS/TALENTS: He’s incredibly intelligent and creative, and has the know-how and skill to put what ideas he has on paper and into reality.

Does Jeff have any phobias? What are they and how intense are they? How have they impacted his life?

[ Jeff has a lot of anxieties. Some I don't think I would count as a phobia as much as something that he's fundamentally afraid of, but there are a couple.

He's always been anxious in hospitals, and has a heightened sense of anxiety whenever he's sick. He spent a lot of time in hospitals when he was young - sick with and then complications with pneumonia after being taken from his dad's care, then with developmental delays he had for the same reason.

Jeff also has a slight fear of the dark, and gets very skittish around the Phase Distorter because of what happened with Giygas.

His biggest fear, though, I think is being unwanted. Making connections has always sort of been hard for Jeff, and being utterly alone and his friends eventually leaving him scares him. He's angry with his father for abandoning him, but he also sees his dad as a reminder of what he could be if he doesn't make the effort to find meaning in interacting with people. Finding out how to make those interpersonal connections is Jeff's big goal after the events of Earthbound. ]

What does the color orange make Jeff think of? How does it make him feel?

[Oooh, orange, huh? That's an interesting one!

Orange is a bit harder compared to other colors, since other colors give him strong associations with his friends (blue for Ness, pink for Paula, green for himself, gold for Poo, and red for Tony are a few examples), but there's not as close an association with orange.

I think it'd remind him of fire most closely, both PSI fire and the fire he tends to make on his own, with his fireworks and other handmade explosives. After living all his life somewhere colder and stiffer like Winters, getting to embrace that fiery side during the events of Earthbound probably helped him open up - or at least learned to both stand up for himself and have a little fun, since I don't image its impact was deep psychologically speaking lmao, he just found an outlet through that passion.

Possible also Orange Kid, lmao, I like to think Orange Kid has a completely comedic, one-sided rivalry with Jeff that he just does not understand.]

And before she became a fighter, Isabelle- we get along well... her trying to care for me while usually on the same amount of low sleep.

"Oh, of course Poo treats me well! He's one of my best friends, after all. I consider him just as much of a best friend and sibling figure as I do Ness and Paula.

He's incredibly strong, and has a knack for keeping his head when things get sticky, which is a quality I really look up to. He's often a bit of a guide and source of advice for me. We don't exactly have much in common, just by how vastly different our lives have been, but where we do overlap in interests - astronomy, for example - we can talk about it for ages.

All in all, he's an excellent friend, and I couldn't have asked for a better companion to fight the War Against Giygas with."

Since Jeff is a character from an entirely different game that I’ve adapted for a persona verse, I’ve written a bunch of info for him here that makes getting to know him in the group verse a little bit easier.

Algernon is a traditional chimera: the head and front half of a lion, the back half of a goat, with the tail of a snake. He is also half robotic, two legs, half his face, and half his body made of metal with teal accents. You can read a headcanon about his persona here. He’s big enough for two people to ride on (and Jeff often does, he thinks he looks cool), and is actually rather gentle and physically affectionate when not in battle. But he has cool fangs and can breathe fire and lasers and stuff. 

Moveset:

His weapons are laser guns (that he makes himself) and chemicals in flasks that he throws at enemies (that he makes and mixes himself). His gun is a bazooka that inflicts heavy splash damage once per fight on all enemies (and of course, he made it himself). 

Things to know:

Jeff is very skilled in building and repairing technological devices, though weapons are his favorite. He will build or fix things for you if you ask and he likes you, though he regularly pulls all-nighters to complete them. He’s an insomniac.

He’s from Winters, a snowy, remote town in England. He lives in Snow Wood Boarding School, a school for gifted boys, and they have had custody of him since age 3. His father, Dr. Andonuts, is a geneticist infamous for his practices of vivisection (experimentation on live animals), who created Jeff via in vitro fertilization (so he doesn’t know or have a mother), then neglected him until Snow Wood removed him from his father’s custody. He has not seen his father since he tried visiting him at age 13. 

Jeff attended Shujin for the events of Royal via an exchange program. He speaks Japanese semi fluently, though it sounds a little like he learned it from a textbook.

He works part-time at Untouchable.

Jeff is VERY ride-or-die for the people he cares deeply about. His sacrifice buff comes very early compared to other confidants, and he tends to try and take hits for people often.

He has an incredible fondness for animals. Mice and cats and monkeys are his favorite, but he’s very kind to pretty much any living creature he sees. He’s the “put a cup under a spider to take it outside” and “feed my lunch to stray cats and dogs” kind of person.

Jeff looks up to Maruki as a father figure, and is apt to defend his actions during the third semester. 

His best friend back home is named Tony, and they text and call and write letters often. Jeff will probably talk about him a lot.

Ness, Paula, and Poo (the other three protagonists of Earthbound) are still friends of Jeff’s, as they participated in the same exchange program, though none of them attend Shujin. Whether or not they’re also Phantom Thieves I haven’t really decided.

[Posting this so late but I need to talk about Jeff’s persona verse again hhhhh its on the brain

The fact that Jeff’s persona is a chimera, basically an oversized cyborg lion, hits so hard for me, especially because Dr. Andonuts made so many scientific advancements and got so infamous because his experiments heavily, heavily relied on testing on animals.

Jeff was a test tube baby (something he kind of assumes by the time he’s 16), and comes to the belief that he’s just as much of an experiment as everything else his father does. Why else would his father forget to take care of him after he moved onto the next project? It’s why his shadow in the p4 verse is a robotic butler that’s about to fall apart... he’s trying to do things for his father for some kind of attention but feels.. broken. Because he was an experiment his father stopped caring about.

His initial persona, Doctor Moreau, comes from an H.G. Wells novel, where the character of Doctor Moreau is an insane scientist shunned by the scientific community because he performs experiments to try and turn animals into people.  So Jeff, even after getting his persona, still thinks of himself as just as bad as Dr. A - whether because he pursues science like his dad (though a much different kind) or because he also believes in pursuing the greater good at any cost to himself. 

His second tier persona is named Algernon, after the short story “Flowers for Algernon” - Algernon being a lab rat that was scientifically altered to be a genius (later at the great cost to the rat’s physical and mental health). He’s accepted that he’s a better person than his father, but still thinks about how his father treated him as a main facet of who he is - like a lab rat.

However, he finally learns to like himself by his 3rd tier persona - named Olivier Delabranche, after a series of French comics by the same name about a boy genius character that makes crazy inventions just because he can. Finally, it’s something that just connects to Jeff himself and the insane things he’s capable of inventing. Just him. No credit to his father.]

Are they a listener or a talker? If they’re listener, what makes them talk? If they’re talker what makes them listen? Or are they pretty balance; in which case, what makes them talk versus listen?

[Jeff is much more of a listener than a talker when it comes to a conversation, easily able to sit there and just soak in what someone is saying without adding a thing himself. He doesn't much like having a lot of eyes on him, the attention in taking part in a larger conversation gets unnerving for him - this sometimes also happens when talking with people he's scared of or doesn't know well.

However, with people that he really genuinely trusts, Jeff won't be able to stop himself from talking when it comes to his interests. Around people he likes, or people he wants to impress, he tends to ramble when talking about something he's passionate about, and often apologizes for talking too long or getting off track.]

[I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.

I love emotional scientist characters.

The fanon take on Jeff has him very stoic and cold, but it’s never something that I’ve really liked for him- especially because of the weapons he wields and because of his age, and because of the sacrifices he and the other m2 characters make. 

I just always got the impression that while Dr. Andonuts is a cold character who sees science as a way to seek “the greater good” of knowledge and personal gain, Jeff is different in the sense that he’s so passionate about how science affects everything and everyone. For Jeff, science is a tool that can be used to help people - so many times in rp Jeff’s tried to build things to help improve the lives of his loved ones, and when he gets older, he builds prosthetic limbs for people who need them as his career path.

I know the trope is that scientists look at robots or things and view them as an object and don’t care about them, but irl scientists do things like teach space rovers to sing happy birthday to themselves, and Jeff has always, always seemed like that kind of person to me. 

So he’s definitely the type who sees himself as someone who can use his gifts in science to help the people around him, with an uncommon sense of optimism for someone of his intelligence.

He helped the world, now he sees it as his responsibility to live in it.]
