Somehow, the villain landed on top of them and somehow, they were quick enough to grab a knife and press it against the hero’s neck.

Quite victoriously, they smirked down at the hero.

“You’re distracted today. Makes you easy prey,” they said, murmured almost.

The hero looked up at them, feeling more or less helpless.

“You won’t get away this time,” the hero promised but both were aware of the situation and how dumb it was to claim a lost battle as a victory.

“Your mind is somewhere else today,” the villain observed. “I want you to focus on me.”

That gave the hero a little kick.

Looking up, they felt intimidated but also strangely safe. The villain was a person of big interest to the hero and sometimes, they feared, those feelings could develop into something more with enough time.

Knowing that the villain would kill for the hero was a thought they liked a little too much. The thrill of it made them turn in their bed after a night full of heroism, eager to return to the villain.

“What is it?” the villain asked. “What is the matter?”

And the hero was tempted to tell them. They didn’t see much harm in it but that was probably the danger.

“Hm?” the villain asked again.

“I…have a boyfriend.”

“Sounds complicated.” The villain made a grimace as if they’d eaten something sour and the pressure of the knife faded slowly.

“…he’s told me a few times now that he wants to sleep with me. I’m asexual.” The villain didn’t seem to be surprised by that and they didn’t make one of those ugly comments the hero was used to. It was a relief but the hero felt like they were betraying their partner. “I don’t know what to do.”

The hero had been in countless relationships before and they had to admit, it seemed like all of them were failing due to their sexuality. They loved their boyfriend, truly loved him and they wanted to find a way around this.

Admittedly, this was the most intimate situation the hero had been in in a long time. With the villain pinning them down and whispering into their ear, smirking and murmuring. The hero liked this, they felt comfortable but they didn’t really need more than this.

“So, he wants to sleep with you?”

“Yeah,” the hero said. “It’s silly, I shouldn’t have mentioned it.”

“Break up,” the villain said. “You’re not compatible.”

“…what?”

“You’re not compatible lovers. You can only break up. What is the solution? An open relationship? Cheating? If that works for you, alright. But you’re someone to blame yourself. You’re someone who would always think they are a problem and that they are not enough.” The hero stared up at their enemy, caught off guard by that piece of advice. Because, yes, that was true. The villain seemed to know them better than they had expected.

“No, it’s not like…compatible lovers, that’s not true. We can make it work,” the hero protested. The villain tilted their head and the hero continued. “Love isn’t like this. It’s not easy. There’s not your perfect soulmate. To love and be loved is to change.”

The villain shook their head and eventually, they got up from the hero. Both hadn’t expected their fight to end with this. But the villain was treating all this like a game anyway.

Which was why the hero was so fascinated by their sudden seriousness.

“And you’re willing to go that far for love? You’re willing to deny a part of yourself, to lose who you are, just to have someone with you?” The villain paused and looked at the ground. “Believe me, what we both have is closer to love than what you think you deserve.”

The hero couldn’t help but feel a sting in their heart.

“We would be horrid lovers,” the hero said.

“It’s not very heroic to lie that much,” the villain answered and somehow the hero knew that the villain was right.
