Where: Outside of Grimmauld Place When: Evening Who: Regulus & @dcrxsswxll
Dirk Cresswell was not someone Regulus would have ever thought he'd be willingly hanging out with. And yet, here he was, standing out on the side of the road waiting for him. It was something he'd vowed to himself, to go out of his comfort zone, and spending time with Dirk was definitely out of his comfort zone. It wasn't that he didn't like him, no, Dirk was a nice guy. But he could be a lot, which was probably why he got along with Sirius so well.
Hearing his footsteps approaching, Regulus took the final haul off his cigarette before flicking the butt away. "Remind me again," He started, taking a few steps towards Dirk to meet him in the middle, "What are we doing? Going to meet… Centaurs?" Regulus' eyebrow raised in curiosity. He'd read about centaurs extensively, but as far as he was aware, they weren't typically too fond of people.

Where: Outside of Tilden's Flat When: Just Before Midnight Who: Tilden & @dcrxsswxll
It was getting late, Tilden knew he should be in bed by now. He couldn't help but want to be outside, though. Summer was his favourite season, especially once the sun set. The tempature was absolutely perfect and he loved the soft glow of the moonlight shining over the trees in the park across the road from his flat. The way the crickets chirped all around him, it was relaxing and reminded him of childhood. Nights like these were his favourite nights to sit out on the front steps with a joint and a hot cup of tea.
Approaching footsteps caught his attention and Tilden's hand instinctively moved towards his wand. Despite not being very good at magic, he always felt most comfortable when he had his wand on him. However he relaxed when the light reflected off a head of green hair, and a smile plastered across his lips. "What're you doing out so late?" Tilden asked, knowing it wasn't even that late, but he was always an early riser, meaning he was typically in bed quite early. "Sticking around for a bit? Tea's still hot if you want a cup."

Maybe everyone was right and Daisy should just throw her ethics to the wind. Her bosses at the Prophet clearly didn't care about ethics, considering all that Rita did. But Daisy couldn't do it. Her integrity mattered far too much to her. "You're probably right, Cresswell, but would I be me if I threw ethics away?" She countered, raising an eyebrow. What had their world come to? However, it was a relief when Dirk agreed to talk to her. "Thank you," she replied, offering him a smile. "Maybe if you give me something good to go with I'll consider it," she teased with a shake of her head. "Where you at the opening event?" She asked him, figuring that that was the best place to start with her interview.

Ok, I'll bite: Calling Lily a social climber for participating in the Slug Club is once again making her responsible for the flaws of a male character (Slughorn). Slughorn is himself a social climber, he likes to collect students with influence and talent, and he likes to call in favours when these students are thriving outside of Hogwarts. Yes, there'll be students who're only there because of their connections and surname, but also students like Ginny and Hermione, full of academic promise that Slughorn recognises and wants to nourish. Yes, maybe for his own benefit, but that's on him.
Are Hermione and Ginny social climbers, too? The Slug Club may have an elitist and exclusivist side. But when academics recognise and reward a student's talent with opportunities, is it "social climbing" to take these opportunities? Slughorn does it in a sleazy way that rubs people wrong - especially because Harry, our great narrator, doesn't like it. But McGonagall has pulled strings with the government to offer Hermione a time turner and gifted first-year Harry a top-of-the-line broom. Teachers favouring students when they recognise their potential should not be new.
Sorry this became an insane stream of consciousness.
Yeah!! Completely agreed. Characters like Hermione and Ginny aren't typically accused of the same. Also I don't think it's wrong to want to excel at a career and the Slug Club would be an opportunity to facilitate that-- one I don't think it's necessarily wrong to take. Hermione, who actively attends the meetings and enjoys herself, doesn't stop being friends with people who don't attend, nor does she purposefully try to ingratiate herself with the upper crust, I think that's fairly obvious in her interactions with Scrimgeour haha.
I'll be real, if I was at Hogwarts and invited to the Slug Club I'd probably go. Mostly because it's a party and free drinks idk.
Slughorn is absolutely a social climber and very very flawed as a character, but tbh I can understand that his acceptance of muggle-born students (flawed and limited as it may have been) was maybe at least something to those students, and why they would have wanted to be included. Like why should they not attend?
In my fic I had a lot of characters criticise Dirk Cresswell for taking the advantages offered to him by Slughorn-- but something I wanted to drive home with Dirk (and this was kind of the purpose of Professor Buttercrambe too) is that he's still muggle-born, still doing his best to survive in a society hostile to him, and that this, while perhaps not very noble, is deserving of empathy and understandable. At least in my opinion!

I'm not brave enough to write for this fest, lol. But I have prompts.
In the movies, Regulus was in the Slug Club - along with at least two Muggle-borns, Lily Evans and Dirk Cresswell. I'd love to read something about his interactions with them, and how he felt about Slughorn showing favoritism to people he considered his inferiors.
Regulus was a Death Eater for about a year, according to Kreacher, and probably committed serious crimes during that time. What's the worst thing he's ever done? What does he regret most when he decides to betray Voldemort? (Those can be the same thing but certainly don't have to be)
The first time Sirius and Regulus meet at Hogwarts after Sirius was disowned - preferably with Reg's attitude being more like "you betrayed our family!" and not "why didn't you take me with you?"
AU where Regulus survives, goes to Dumbledore as a defector, and is allowed to change sides - but then ends up annoying and offending everyone from the Order who he comes into contact with. He may be anti-Voldemort now, but he's still a blood purist and a snob.
Sincerely,
A very tired Regulus fan who has heard the words "forced to join the Death Eaters" a few too many times
These are some great prompts!!! I am getting some ideas of my own. 🤩
I would also hope that everyone that wants to join feels comfortable to do so, so let me know if there is anything that could make you feel more comfortable taking part in fest! It is possible to stay completely anonymious - I will make a post about this. (:

For the Give Me a Character ask game:
Ted Tonks or Rabastan
Please and thanks
Thanks @nena-96, I'll go ahead and do both!
Character ask game
Ted Tonks
How I feel about this character:
Ted is wonderful! Even though he's a very minor character in canon, there's enough of his personality to get an impression of who he was, and it's very positive. He's someone Andromeda loved enough to choose him over her family, who managed to raise an awesome kid, and who was very, very normal (described as a slob, etc.), but also had an extraordinarily good heart. Very underrated.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Only Andromeda. They're one of the few couples I can't multi-ship at all.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
I headcanon that he was friends with Kingsley, and I have a lot of angsty thoughts about his time on the run with Dean Thomas and Dirk Cresswell.
My unpopular opinion about this character
Out of all the Marauders Era/First War characters, he's probably the most desirable as a long-term romantic partner. Not necessarily the most handsome or attractive - that's in the eye of the beholder anyway - and certainly not the most glamorous. But in a game of FMK, I'd choose him for marry, pretty much every time, regardless of the other options.
One thing I wish had happened with this character in canon.
I wish he had survived 😭
--
Rabastan Lestrange
How I feel about this character
Vaguely negative, mostly just meh. He's, canonically, a really horrible person. But he's also basically just a name on the page who doesn't really do anything individually, only as part of a group with more memorable characters. Torturing the Longbottoms, breaking out of Azkaban, the battle at the Department of Mysteries - he's involved in a lot, but everything he does, Bellatrix does, too, and he's just not all that interesting in comparison.
I've used him sometimes as a supporting character in fics. He's very convenient, as a known first war Death Eater and, before that, a Slytherin who most likely went to school with the Black sisters. I've read fics where he was the guy Andromeda was meant to marry, which isn't the route that I'm planning on going in Becoming Andromeda Tonks but I definitely think can work well.
I think what I'm getting at, is that I see him more as a plot device than a character?
All the people I ship romantically with this character
No one
My non-romantic OTP for this character
I guess Bellatrix and Rodolphus?
My unpopular opinion about this character
I don't think I have enough thoughts about him to have an unpopular opinion tbh
One thing I wish had happened with this character in canon.
This is something I literally just came up with on the spot, but I think it would be interesting if he had children. The only Death Eaters' kids at Hogwarts seem to be the ones whose parents got away with pretending to be under the Imperius Curse. But Draco is allowed to come back in HBP, so I assume other children with known Death Eater parents would also be allowed to attend. And this could lead to some interesting interactions in the later books, especially after Voldemort's return and the mass breakout in OotP. Rabastan would work well for this because the Lestrange name is recognizable, but he's not so important to the existing story that it would be a big deal for him to have children.

Bryony certainly didn't appreciate the others tone, and she raised an eyebrow. "Well, it's clear that you at least have good taste," she commented. It wasn't like Bryony particularly cared what Dirk had to say; she remembered him from Hogwarts, and he didn't particularly matter to her. Perhaps next year Bryony wouldn't feel so drawn to having such an excessive holiday, but after years of losing out on her family's holiday traditions, she was excited to finally get to be back to how things were. "Exactly my thoughts," she replied, aware that he was being sarcastic but not particularly caring.
"I'm not sure that I owe you an explanation for my joy this holiday season, but if you must know, I am excited to have the holidays with my new husband. Is that so horrible?" She retorted. The audacity to make her sound so heartless, even if it were true. She didn't care about the death, sue her, she didn't know the girl.

Location: Prewett Estate Date: June 24th, 1984 @dirkcresswcll
Emmeline couldn’t sit still. She felt on edge and she didn’t know how to release the uncomfortable feeling in her chest. The field teams had left a little while ago, leaving those at headquarters to wait. She wasn’t sure what the strategy team was currently up to, but the healing team was mostly double checking supplies and just...waiting. It almost felt like waiting in that cage for rescue, even though she kept telling herself that it wasn’t the same. That she was free to roam the house, and nobody was there that could hurt her. Except maybe Regulus. She still didn’t trust him.
“I’m going to go check on the strategy team,” she finally announced when she couldn’t handle sitting around anymore. She had no idea how she was going to get through today. Emme stood up and walked out of the infirmary. What she hadn’t said was that she was going to go check on Dirk and see how he was handling things. She was so thankful that he was staying behind with the strategy team. She already had to worry about James and Gideon, she didn’t think that she could handle worrying about Dirk too. When Emme got to the war room, she spotted Moody and Hestia in conversation on one side of the room, and Dirk standing alone on the other side, watching the maps. Emme faintly smiled in greeting to Moody and Hestia when they noticed her.
“Hey,” she greeted him with a strained smile. She crossed the room and stopped beside him. “How’s it looking out there?” She asked.

Was it bad that Marlene had been to visit Sirius before Dirk? Was she supposed to make the guy she was dating her first port of call? Of course not, she told herself, shaking her head at the thought. Sirius is a friend, you’re allowed to visit him when you like. Besides, the fact that Sirius had been hurt the night before was surely reasonably justification to want to check on him. You don’t need to justify going to see a friend.
Sighing, she tried to push thoughts of Sirius and the accompanying confusion out of her mind as she reached Dirk’s door and raised a hand to knock, the other hand holding carefully onto the carry tray with their coffees in. As she waited with a smile on her lips, she felt oddly nervous. Last night, minus the attacks, had been good, but it had brought them to a point that was new and unfamiliar to Marlene, and she wasn’t entirely sure on the next step.

Location: Room of Requirement//Ludo’s Party Tagged: @cresswelld
She didn’t have it on her, and she wasn’t sure how she’d brought it up, but here Charity was talking to a couple people who would actually listen and found it as exciting as she did. “So then, when you open the Pez head,” She did her best attempt at mirroring the action, which looked ridiculous without the actual toy. “The character spits out infinite candy. It’s practically magical. And the candies are delicious. But I’ve heard that like portraits, the character’s come to life! Only at night though, which is why it hasn’t been documented. I’m hoping to be the first to prove it.”

How do u keep all the canonical marauders facts straight when there are so many things to consider and they’re spread out across all the hp books?? Tle has so many little details from the original books as well- like the line ab dirk cresswell speaking gobbledegook in the recent chapter. Love these details!! It’s like easter eggs for the hardcore fans😂 Do u have like a document where uve recorded every mention of the marauders era in the hp books? Or do u use some other method? Just interested❤
**I just found this ask in my drafts instead of published and I’M SO SORRY ANON. I don’t know how long it’s been here but here you go 🙈
So the short answer is that I have a slightly obsessive personality and I hoard information about things that interest me.
The longer answer is that I have a ton of fairly organized notes (see: obsessive) that I keep in Evernote and refer to. I have lots of lists of characters and individual bio notes on all the canon characters that show up in TLE and loads of backstory both canon and my own invention for almost all of them. I have timelines I made in Scapple that show the interaction between all these different canon characters and events (when Andromeda was at Hogwarts vs Narcissa, who was the Minister for Magic when, etc). Basically I’m a detail freak. This was just a secret lil hobby for a long time, and I weirdly enjoy being organized I guess lmao.
Also I read the books many times during a very formative part of my life so a lot of it I just remember tbh 😅

dirkcresswcll:
She told him about her ideas for the tattoo - maybe a feather, maybe an egg - and he could tell she’d thought about it, even if she hadn’t gotten the idea pegged down completely yet. He grinned at that. It meant that she truly did believe in his ideas. That she wanted this for herself and knew it was coming from a good place, even if others were angry about the idea. “To be honest, I can’t picture what I want at all,” Dirk said to her. “I’ll probably just let Edgar design something for me. Big enough it won’t be hard to find, but small enough not to attract a ton of attention if it were seen.”
Practical. It was really all he’d thought about. “I think I want it here - “ He tapped his upper arm, under his shoulder, with his palm. “I figure this would be pretty easy to grab if I needed to use it, but also I can hide it when I need to.”
When he told her just why he’d come up with the idea, however, Emmeline face lit up in a shy smile and Dirk kissed her back as she pressed her lips to his. She spoke against them, calling him sweet, and Dirk grinned into the kiss. “Just the truth,” he murmured before pressing forward again, deepening the kiss and shifting his body so he was half on top of her, propping himself up with his elbow.
Tumblr media
~
“Edgar is really talented,” Emmeline agreed, looking up at him. “I think that he would come up with something really amazing.” Emme glanced at the spot that he was pointing to. “I think that that’s a good spot...it would be really easy to get to if you need to.”
She looked at him for a moment, considering her next words, as she fell silent. “Did I tell you that I want him to do a tattoo for me?” She bit her lip and glanced at him. “A jasmine flower...it um, it signifies healing, and well...there’s a scar. That I want to cover.” Emmeline paused and turned, and reached up to the collar of her shirt and she pulled it down off her shoulder slightly so that he could see the scar on her shoulder. Her heart was pounding in her chest, she had never showed the scar to anyone except the healers and the others. They had seen it when it had happened. It was a round burn mark, like someone had burned her with the end of their wand. “It’s um...I want to forget,” she told him softly.
Emme hadn’t felt this vulnerable in a long time, but it felt right being with Dirk. Opening up a little more to him. They hadn’t been together very long, but she already trusted him more then anyone. She felt safe. She let him deepen the kiss, and she responded eagerly, letting him shift so he was half on top of her, and she let the kiss go on for a little longer before she pulled away for a moment. “Dirk?” She said softly, meeting his gaze, her heart beating fast in her chest. “I’m ready.”

CREDIT TO KÆM (Template credit)
Face Claim: Evan Peters
Theme Song:  Boys Will Be Bugs by Cavetown
Introduction
Name: Rupert Jasper Wilkes
𝙍𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩- Fame Bright  𝙅𝙖𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙧- Treasurer   𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙠𝙚𝙨- Protection Desire
  Also Known As:
Rue- Their preferred nickname to go by.
Roo- Used mainly by Dorcas, Lucinda, Emma and Pandora
  Titles:
-Heir to the Wilkes Estate (illegitimate)
  Birthday: February 1st, 1960
  Astrological Signs:
*Sun: Aquarius
*Moon: Aries
*Rising: Leo
  Nationality: German-Irish-British
  Species/Blood-Status: Pureblood
Despite being a pureblood, Rupert didn’t strongly believe in the supremacy of their people in the way others seemed to preach it, considering how they rarely saw anything good in pureblood families.
But they also respected those strong beliefs enough to avoid going against them publicly. At school though despite them keeping their distance from both purebloods and muggleborns alike, they still interacted with others out of necessity and judged them based on the way they were treated by them instead of the person’s blood status.
  Blood Type: AB+
  Gender: Genderqueer
Rupert identified as genderqueer, with them finding it the most suitable label to use for himself.
Everyone knows about this except their father whom they chose not to tell knowing he won’t be pleased due to the fact that the only reason lord Wilkes acknowledges them was the lack of male heirs with his wife while Rue was assigned male at birth and he would prefer it to stay that way as the Wilkes family was one of the few traditional one that still insisted on solely having male heirs.
  Pronouns:  They/Them ; He/Him ;  She/Her  ;  It/Its
  Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Despite it being something wildly accepted among pureblood wizards, Rue was hesitant about coming out to others.
The first person he came out to was their mother who was very supportive as she has known about that from the very beginning.
At school though, they chose to keep this to themselves unless it was brought up with someone they are close to. The only ones they came out to at first are:
Dorcas Meadowes, Louis Avery, Severus Snape, Dirk Cresswell, Rubeus Hagrid
  About Them
  Personality: ISFP
Going to Hogwarts, Rupert just wanted to pass his years and graduate in peace, which of course never happened. They have a few people they would refer to as friends (Dorcas Meadowes, Severus Snape, Dirk Cresswell and Rubeus Hagrid) and would hang out with when others aren’t around.
Despite them trying to avoid attracting attention as much as possible, Rupert was a brilliant student getting very high grades in multiple subjects which put them in the spotlight.
Despite their meek personality, there were occasions where they snapped and it didn’t end well for those at the receiving end. Which started the rumor that just like the people they were seen with (Snape and Yaxley), Wilkes was a blood supremacist who used dark magic often.
Occupation: Rupert didn’t have big plans before graduating Hogwarts, and was going to pick the career they want once they graduate.
  Likes:
Magical beasts / art / Learning new things. / Food, they didn’t have a favorite as they enjoyed trying different things. / Flowers and insects, ever since they were little they loved studying anything nature related. / Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them book which is one of their most prized possessions. /Hanging out with a certain friends circle (Dorcas, Lucinda and some others)
  Dislikes:
The general rules in pureblood families, they were happy they didn’t have to follow them. / Taking risks, as they preferred being careful and safe. / Social gatherings / Slughorn’s attempts to get him to join the Slug Club.
  Hobbies:
-Reading
-Collecting information about insects, flowers and taking his own notes on magical beasts
-Sketching/Drawing
  Fears:
-Creepy crawly stuff, including some insects (he likes but fears them)
-Dolls
-Loud sounds, as he is very sensitive to noise
-Public speaking
  Strength:
- Dueling. Despite him rarely getting into fights, Rupert was a good duelist compared to some other students. And he improved a lot after joining the Death Eaters.
-Vast knowledge on magical creatures and geography in general.
-Reading people. It was more of a skill they picked up and learned from Barty who was quite the natural at it. And it allowed them to mimic others with time though it did take them a lot of practice to study one person at a time.
-Shapeshifting
-Dark Arts. Rupert was hesitant about learning the dark arts, but upon spending time with Avery he grew to share his beliefs on how both dark and light arts can be used for good and bad so there was no reason to not learn both.
  Weakness:
-Despite him being stubborn, Rupert could be easily persuaded when it’s someone from his side doing the persuasion.
-He gets nervous easily and doesn’t know how to handle situations that require socializing.
  Talents:
- Caring after magical creatures
- Drawing/Sketching
  Relationships
  Father: Jasper Wilkes
Due to Rupert being a child conceived out of wedlock (when Jasper was already married and Shayla betrothed to another), his existence wasn’t going to be acknowledged by his father until it was confirmed that Jasper’s wife couldn’t have any more children and by that time she had four daughters only. Making Rupert the only born male child in Wilkes household and their heir.
Rupert’s relationship with his father is limited to the fact that he is the heir. They only meet in formal events where his presence is necessary.
Mother: Shayla Macmillan
Being raised by a single mother, Rupert was very close to her. He never cared about the fact that a mistake of hers was what got them basically banished from the pureblood circles, as he didn’t even like those pretentious snobs, and that mistake led to his existence. Though he knew this wasn’t always mutual as his mother confessed to him once that she used to resent him as an infant, as it was easier to blame him for how she fell from grace, before growing to accept the fact that if she wanted to blame anyone, it should be the purebloods for their rules and Jasper for making a fool out of her, and not the innocent toddler who has done nothing.
Shayla supported Rue in everything from who they were to what they liked and wanted. She was opposed to Jasper making her child the legal heir once he learned about them, but it also ensured a good future for them where they will be at least more financially and socially comfortable so she gave in eventually.
Siblings:
Rupert has three older sisters and one sister whom he only saw a couple of times and they didn’t speak more than exchanging greetings and introductions. So they were basically strangers to him.
  Relatives:
Unlike other purebloods his age, Rupert didn’t socialize much and only knew that he was related to almost every pureblood wizard and witch one way or another. From his mother’s side though he was familiar with the Prewett siblings and James Potter.
  Education
  School: Hogwarts
  House: Slytherin
Getting sorted into Slytherin was a shock to both Shayla and Jasper.
Wilkes family were known to be sorted into Ravenclaw and Gryffindor, while Macmillan were usually in Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. With Rupert’s shy quiet personality, they were expected to be sorted into Hufflepuff.
Rue hated the fact that he was put into Slytherin at first because that was another reason for his father’s side of the family to not like him, while his mother was quite proud with him being the first Slytherin in her bloodline seeing it as a good rather than bad thing. Slytherins were born to lead, and this was a proof her baby wasn’t as weak as everyone loved to make him to be.
Best Core Class: History Of Magic
  Worst Core Class: Potions
Elective: Care Of Magical Creatures, Apparition
Quidditch: Rupert was a Chaser in the Slytherin Quidditch team.
Extra-Curricular: Art, Muggle Studies, Magical Theory
  Magic
  Wand:
  -Length:  10¼" long
 -Flexibility: Quite Flexible
 -Wood: Chestnut
-Core: Veela hair
 -First Reaction:
  Pets: Long Eared Owl
Boggart: Big snake that’s long enough to tower over an adult man.
  Animagus: No
Metamorphmagus: Yes (unregistered)
Patronus: Granian Winged Horse , though he lost the ability to conjure it after graduation when he officially started doing his Death Eater duties.
  Amortentia: TBA
  Affiliations/Alliances
  Hometown: Limerick, Ireland
  Residence: Villa in London
  Loyalty:
-His mother
-Slytherin House
- Voldemort and the Death Eaters
  Trivia
- On his first year at Hogwarts, during the Malfoy Christmas party, Rupert met a strange man that had a conversation with him for a few hours, complimenting his drawings then helping the boy see the good side of being sorted into Slytherin since he was feeling down over that, and discussed the existence of multiple magical creatures that the kid wasn’t aware of. Before the wizard sent what Rupert considered fascinating but terrifying images a snake that was over thirty feet long in a strange looking room and was asked to draw something based on them.  They never got over what they witnessed there, the sketch they made was one that got engraved into their memory.
On fourth year, Rupert saw the same drawing of his on his friends’ forearms.
-It was Corban Yaxley who convinced Rupert to meet the Dark Lord before deciding whether to join them or not, Rupert knew that as soon as he meets the man he will join anyway.
-Rupert and Severus became friends when Slughorn assigned them to a project together with Severus being his top student and Rue being his worst.
-Rupert joined the Quidditch team because his mother convinced him to, and he seemed to enjoy it so he didn’t quit.

CHARACTER DETAILS:
NAME: Dirk Robert Cresswell
AGE: 22
GENDER, PRONOUNS, and SEXUALITY: Cis-Male, He/Him, Bisexual.
This is something Dirk doesn’t know himself and, if he were to realize it, it might not be something he would readily welcome. While he’s mostly turned his back on much of the Muggle world, some of the biases he’d learned had still stuck. While the Wizarding World might be more open to all sexualities, the Muggle one has still not caught up yet. With the aids epidemic in a heightened state in the Muggle world during the 1980s, there is much stigma around being with someone of the same sex. Due to this, it’s likely Dirk would be focusing any romantic energy on being with a woman.
That being said Dirk has only had sex with one person, a girlfriend he’d had for a few months when he was nineteen years old. His experience in the romance department is fairly lacking, which is maybe why he hasn’t yet realized that his infatuation with the Marauders is because he’s actually crushing.
BLOOD STATUS: Muggleborn
HOUSE ALUMNI: Ravenclaw
ANY CHANGES: Nothing, you wrote Dirk brilliantly, Nicky! However, I will likely lean into less of Dirk’s Muggle side, as I found the idea of a Muggleborn who did not like the Muggle world much an interesting one.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND:
PERSONALITY:
Dirk is a lot of things he wishes he wasn’t. He isn’t popular or cool like the people he looks up to. He’s not easy-going or good at small talk. He can’t crack a joke or hold his liquor or make someone want to be his friend. But he sure tries to be a lot of these things. The kind of guy who wants to be the center of attention, he’s instead often found on the sidelines. An introvert who envies extroverts.
He’s afraid of heights, so Quidditch was always out of the question, which might’ve helped establish his social standing at Hogwarts. To get involved in school, Dirk instead joined the Arithmancy Club during his third year and participated in Inter-House competitions to see who could work the equation quickest. Ravenclaw, he would be happy to report, was typically the winner.
While some Ravenclaws were dreaming of art and poetry - their intelligence coming out in waves of brilliant creativity - Dirk was always a numbers wix. He’s highly analytical, which makes him really good at Ancient Runes or Arithmancy or chess, but not exactly the best at holding a conversation. He tries, though. He likes talking to people and is friendly, but his self-conscious nature causes him to stumble over words, filling the silence with errs and uhs until people stop listening.
Desperate to be liked, Dirk is easily manipulated. That’s maybe why it was so easy to agree to go along with Sirius’ plan to find James. Why, after Benjy died, Dirk got even quieter. This does, however, make him a good listener. Because he’s happy to sit back and let someone else take the lead, Dirk is unlikely to steal the conversation or take someone’s thunder. He’ll let a person talk all about themselves as though his own thoughts don’t really matter on the subject.
He’s forgettable, which is one of the reasons why he doesn’t often advertise his blood-status. When people discover he’s a Muggleborn, that’s often the first thing they see afterwards - every interaction henceforth blurred around the edges at his lack of magical family. He’s not secretive about it, but he is sometimes ashamed - and then ashamed for being ashamed.
Dirk is brave in a quiet, unassuming way that people don’t realize is actually courageous. It took guts to join the Order as a Muggleborn. He believes in the cause because the cause is to keep people like him alive. There’s part of him that’s afraid to die, but if he’s going to die, he’d prefer it to be with a Killing Curse. Anything to keep from turning out to be like Benjy Fenwick, with bits of his body splattered all over the person next to him.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FAMILY:
If you ask Dirk, there is very little interesting about his family. They are normal people. The oldest of two, Dirk has a younger sister named Eleanor who is finishing up her final year in Sixth Form. His parents, Anna and Gordon, had met at University and had fallen in love - but not that all-encompassing passionate kind of love that sometimes people talked about. He’s seen them kiss, but nothing aside from that simple morning peck before either of them went to work. Anna is a schoolteacher and Gordon works for the bank - and, for all intents and purposes, Dirk doesn’t know them very well.
He’d been gone so much throughout his formative years and, whenever he was home, he was doing schoolwork they couldn’t understand or reading books they couldn’t relate to. His sister and him rarely fought. He doesn’t connect with stories of sibling rivalry or fighting. If anything, Dirk was so disconnected to their world while growing up that it was like he and Ellie existed in two separate universes. My brother goes to boarding school, she’d tell her friends and Dirk sometimes wonders, even now, if she ever resented the fact that she’d been roped into lying about him for the entirety of her life.
He likes them all - loves them, even - but it feels more like out of obligation more than anything else. For their part, Dirk’s pretty sure they don’t really know him either. Everything he’s ever done is so beyond their reach and, by the time he turned sixteen, it was just easier to let him head into the Wizarding World without them as he’d pretty much been doing anyway.
Whenever asked about them, he tells people that he doesn’t seem them often, but loves them very much. If pressed, he’d say it’s easier this way and let them draw conclusions that he’s avoiding them for their safety. In reality, he’s not avoiding them at all. There just isn’t much to say that they’d understand. He has a telephone that he hides in a drawer for whenever they’d like to talk, but the calls are few and far between and it’s something that, with everything going on, Dirk hardly has time to feel guilty about.
OCCUPATION:
Dirk was not at the top of his class, but he certainly wasn’t at the bottom of it. What he lacked in practical subjects like Defense Against the Dark Arts, he more than made up for in analytical subjects like Arithmancy and Ancient Ruins. He had enough NEWTs to, under different circumstances, gain employment into one of the many jobs within the Ministry of Magic.
However, he was a Muggleborn. And while that didn't necessarily mean he was unemployable, it did mean his application often got put on the bottom of the stacks. Employing a Muggleborn would put a target over one’s head these days - people were dying for much less - and so Dirk’s blood status made him undesirable in a way that, had their been no war, it might’ve not.
He managed to get a job working for a Runologist named Thorn Ibex in Diagon Alley. Dirk likes to joke that the wizard is quite a thorn in his side because he spends most of his time out front with any shoppers, while Dirk does most of the work in the back. Mr. Ibex’s store - simply called Runes and More - makes its money in two ways. The first is the trinkets it sells in the front; little tourist-y type objects, expensive runes that are auctioned off to rich collectors, tools needed for less professional decoders or students. The second is an outsource through the Ministry of Magic or wix themselves.
Mr. Ibex is paid to decipher runes, write essays, and sometimes even publish in the Daily Prophet. Magical collectors may bring something they’d acquired in Egypt or Albania or America to Mr. Ibex to decode - to help put a price on whether this was truly a unique artifact or not. For the Ministry, they are sometimes given runes to help in the war or even decipher what they believe might be a dark artifact before passing it along to cursebreakers or Aurors.
Dirk spends most of his time in the back office - No need to be seen, boy! Mr. Ibex would say - doing a majority of the work for very little of the payout. His name is not published in any article, credit for any decoding given to Mr. Ibex instead, and he is paid with a small percentage of the earnings. While this angers Dirk, it’s still a job and he needs a job if he’s going to continue to support himself.
LIVING SITUATION:
Dirk lives in a flat in Diagon Alley. Hogsmeade would’ve been safer for someone like him, but it was more expensive due to both the safety aspect and the proximity to the school, so Diagon Alley was his only choice. Of course, he could’ve gotten something within London and fit in rather easily with the Muggles, but he was determined to stick to somewhere magical and so Diagon Alley it was. It’s a studio, so the bed is on one side of the room with the kitchen on the other and the living room in the middle. It’s nothing amazing - he’s not exactly the decorator - but he enjoys it and it still feels like home.
ORDER OF THE PHOENIX:
Dirk is underestimated in the Order, but what else is new? His analytical brain makes him look at things differently than many others - especially in a group run largely by Gryffindors. But the Wizarding World has always valued flash over substance and so no one really recognizes what Dirk could fully bring to the Order, if given a chance. He’s a good dueler, though it wouldn’t be obvious just looking at him. Whereas someone like James Potter might jump headfirst into battle - and therefore is viewed as one of the best duelers in the organization - Dirk is more careful to assess first. He understands that not every fight actually requires a battle at all. Where Alice or Frank or another Auror might say Time to go, Dirk might say How else could we do this? He looks at the battlefield as he would a code to crack - like a particularly difficult rune.
He crunches the numbers and asks questions. Are they likely to win this battle? What would produce the best outcome? Would pulling back save more lives? That view makes him an excellent strategist, but not the best for the action, first mentality of the Order. In duels, he chooses his spell-casting specifically and carefully, always thinking three steps ahead. This leads to rather boring duels, however, and he might be considered a coward during the moments where he chooses to pull back, rather than barrel ahead.
It’s a shame, too. If the Order recognized his abilities more, they might be able to do better in their battles. As it is, Dirk is typical on Hestia Jones’ team of setting up the missions. Making the strategy. A person who likes numbers and chess and ancient runes, he’s good in that role, but he could be doing more. His skills in the Study of Ancient Runes can prove useful for any deciphering needed - any dark object that might need looked at. That skills is not needed a majority of the time but, when it is, Dirk is helpful.
Perhaps, in large part, he’s underestimated not just because his personality, but also his blood status. While the Order prides themselves on not viewing that as a matter of importance, any Muggleborn would be able to recount numerous moments of internal prejudice. Dirk tries to not let that get to him too much.
RELATIONSHIPS:
(I’m writing these off the basis of the bios, but anything can be changed with player portrayals, ideas, and through plotting. This is just a basis to start!)
Dorcas Meadowes & Lily Evans. Dirk doesn’t like the idea of being roped into a little Muggleborns-only group, but he still finds himself magnetic to Dorcas and Lily, anyway. He knows they’re each other’s friends more than him, but he’s still welcome by default. Lily is more closed off - and, honestly, he thinks it’s sort of messed up that she’d break up with a dude the day after he returned from the dead - but he still respects her, while Dorcas is more fierce and open. Both of these girls, in Dirk’s opinion, are the better Muggleborns. Unafraid to stand up for themselves, be who they are. He knows he can learn from them, but just doesn’t know what yet.
Theodosia Selwyn. People like her are the prime reason he doesn’t advertise his blood-status. Now that she knows, she only sees it. It’s hidden well, but Dirk can see. Any Muggleborn would be able to see. The problem is that it’s so subtle that it could be easily chalked up to being in his head if he were to report it. So, for now, he’s okay with keeping his suspicions to himself.
Daisy Hookum. Like Theo, Daisy only sees his blood-status. She’s at least well-meaning, though. Wants to understand it more than anything. Dirk’s happy to help, but that’s mostly because he doesn’t know how to say no to anything. Truthfully, he wishes she’d choose another Muggleborn and pick their brain for her book instead.
Emma Vanity. Someone he could call a friend, which is likely surprising to outsiders. They couldn’t be anymore different on the surface, but Emma is kind and eager and willing to learn. And there’s nothing more that a Ravenclaw loves than someone willing to learn. Dirk likes her - and he likes that he can be a mentor to her, in a way. It’s not like anyone else is asking him for advice.
Benjy Fenwick. They weren’t friends, but that doesn’t matter because Benjy’s death will forever have changed Dirk’s life. Dirk been there for Sirius and James, sure, but Benjy is who will stick with him longer than anyone else. He’d had to wash off his blood - had body parts and skin all over him. There’s nothing more traumatizing than that.
Sirius Black. Dirk knows that Sirius doesn’t understand just why he was so effected by Benjy’s death. Once, there’s nothing more he would’ve given to be able to hang out with a Marauder. Now, Dirk can’t look at him in the eyes without remembering that Sirius, too, was covered in Benjy’s blood. Still, he can’t help but wonder how Sirius was able to move on so quickly. He wants to know just how a person is able to forget.
James Potter. Looking at James isn’t as bad as looking at Sirius, but it’s still hard. James was everything the person Dirk wanted to be - and, in some ways, he still is. But even James had gotten taken and it’s proof that no one is invincible.
Lucinda Talkalot & Mica Talkalot. Mica had been a confidant of sorts. He’d taken Dirk under his wing to show him the ropes of the Order. Never made Dirk feel less than. Dirk’s unaware that Mica had written to Lucinda about it, but he doesn’t know what would change even if he did. It’s hard to like Lucinda because of her brashness and anger. It’s hard to understand just why she’s here when she spent most of her school years with people who were at the height of discriminatory towards people like Dirk. He might be able to be persuaded if she went out of her way to talk to him but, for now, he’s fine with avoiding her.
Emmeline Vance. Both Ravenclaws and only a few years apart, Emmeline understands Dirk in a different way than most. She’d gone through something horrific during the same time that Dirk experienced his trauma with Benjy and she seems happy to let him be himself - whoever that is - whenever she’s around.
Edgar Bones. Edgar wasn’t one of the Marauders - he wasn’t a person who people looked up to for their jokes and pranks and pure determination. To Dirk, Edgar should’ve been like one of the side characters in his stories. He should’ve been the one giving out the quests never to be seen again - not the one leading the charge. But Edgar had surpassed Dirk’s expectations of him long ago. Even though Edgar had been years behind him in school, Dirk had known his name. He was effortlessly cool like Sirius or James were - like Dirk himself would never be.
OOC EXPLORATION:
SHIPS/ANTI-SHIPS:
Dirk/Chemistry. He’s not a very good flirt, so I’m definitely open to watching him stumble his way through dating. No anti-ships here. I’d prefer for things to develop naturally and nothing really planned out until it feels right with a character.
INTERPERSONAL STRUGGLES:
There are only three Muggleborns in the Order of the Phoenix, which is almost laughable given the cause is meant for people like them. Within those three, none of them are in positions of power. Dirk finds this insulting, but unsurprising - but he’s also unwilling to stand up and speak out against it. He’s afraid of what that would look like. Afraid to be deemed one of those Muggleborns. A lot of his issues stem from his own insecurity of not being good enough, which were created through internal biases and prejudice.
It’s why he wears robes practically all the time (yes, he’ll go for trousers underneath, but that’s only because even the purest of blood still sometimes wear trousers). It’s why he doesn’t see his family much or talk about them. His blood status isn’t a secret and he wouldn’t lie about it when asked, but he’s not going to bring it up, either. So worried that others will only see him as a Muggleborn, he’s actually the one judging himself for it more than anyone else. Putting himself in that box he’s so desperately assuming others are putting him in.
He wants to be like other people mostly because he hasn’t really accepted himself for who he is. And maybe that’s because he still has so much growing to do. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t really know who he is, while he’s spent so much time trying to be like someone else.
I’d like to see him being forced out of that shell, to figure out who just Dirk is like he claims to want. He’s struggling less with the Order as a whole than who he is as a person both within and outside the organization. Because of his desperation to be liked, Dirk is easily able to get pulled into things he might not have chosen on his own (Dark Arts Squad, I’m looking at you!)
He’s reeling after Benjy. It’s the first person who he ever actually saw die and he’s sometimes convinced he still has actual blood on his hands. It’s the first time he understood his own morality. He’d wanted to join the Order because of the cause, but also because of the adventure. Often with his nose in a book, he’d dreamt of stuff like this without truly understanding it. He had always cried along with the Hunters and the Hobbits when he read that passage, but he hadn't realized what it would be like to see the Boromir fall in real life until Benjy died beside him.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?
Same as before, I love that there is no good guys/bad guys here. More specifically with Dirk, I think it’s interesting to have a Muggleborn who isn’t like Hermione with her “Mudblood and proud.” Dirk is acutely aware that he is a Muggleborn and extensively understanding what that means for him, but that doesn’t mean he likes it. What happens when a Muggleborn doesn’t advertise that fact? What happens when they turn on the Muggle world and fully embrace their magical side? He’s half-pretending that part of him doesn’t exist when that’s typically what others see first when they look at him.
PLOT DROP IDEAS (OPTIONAL): N/A, but I’m happy to put Dirk in harm’s way as I am with all my characters!
ANYTHING ELSE? I couldn’t find a place where this fit, so have this headcanon:
Dirk has left much of the Muggle world behind, but was unable to get rid of those fantasy books he’d grown up reading. Forever locked in a story, he can be often found with his nose in one of these books. To keep up appearances, he’s transfigured the covers of these to look like respectable Wix reading material, both fiction and non-fiction, because he’s afraid of what others might say. Since Benjy, he can’t bring himself to read anything new. He’d understood that war meant sacrifices, but it’s different when those sacrifices are really people that he knows. Now, he’ll only pick up his old favorites - and only if he knows they’ll have a happy ending.

Arthur and Molly for the ask game?
Molly
favorite thing about them: I love that Molly is everyone’s mom. I don’t just mean Harry, either. Hermione? Lives with me every summer, my kid now. Tonks? Gotta look after that one, who knows what trouble she’ll get into! Remus, who is less then a decade her junior? Get that boy a sandwich. She’s frequently incredibly overbearing about it (I don’t for a moment imagine that it would be safe to decline her maternal advances), but that’s part of what makes it so delightful.
least favorite thing about them:  It would be nice if she could lay off the mother-in-law bulls***. Going after Hermione for toying with with Harry’s affections? Pretty much every interaction ever with Fleur? Come on. For that matter, I’m pretty sure Ron didn’t learn “scarlet woman” from his dad.
favorite line:  NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!
brOTP:  I like to think Molly and Andromeda became good friends after the war.
OTP:  Molly and Arthur--is it even a question?
nOTP:  So I haven’t seen Molly shipped with anyone but Arthur, but I’m sure there are plenty of awful options available.
random headcanon:  The Prewetts have somewhat more money, and more respect in wizard society, than the Weasleys. Molly is widely regarded (especially by Auntie Muriel, who will say it) to have married down.
unpopular opinion:  While Ron’s feelings of being the least of his brothers are not unfounded, it is absolutely a mistake to blame them on malice on Molly’s part. Molly absolutely adores her sweet little Ronnie.
song i associate with them:  Can’t think of one right now.
favorite picture of them:  How cute is this?
Arthur
favorite thing about them: Honestly, the thing I enjoy most about Arthur is that, for the most part, he’s super goofy and lighthearted... but he’s absolutely capable of stepping up with s*** gets real. He’s got a goofy personality without for a minute seeming like he’s dumb or useless. That’s fun.
least favorite thing about them:  It would be nice if Arthur would act a little less of a hen-pecked husband around Molly.
favorite line:  “So Dirk Cresswell is ten times the wizard you are.” (Or, honestly, the entire exchange with “Runcorn” in the elevator. It’s just... utterly emblematic of the guy. It’s so obviously dangerous for him to be saying those things to that person at that time, but he just can’t keep his mouth shut.)
brOTP:  Tell me about Arthur and Alastor Moody. I feel like they were rather the grown ups in the room, in the Order, much of the time.
OTP:  Again, Molly and Arthur, of course.
nOTP:  Again, I have seen absolutely no non-Molly Arthur ships? But I’m sure there are awful ones out there.
random headcanon:  Arthur is the real chess master of the family. He taught all the kids to play. Bill and Ron are the only ones that beat him regularly, and even Ron’s record is only one game out of three.
unpopular opinion:  Is this still unpopular? Percy had a right to be mad at his dad in OotP. (In general, Arthur could afford to be a little more supportive of his kids when they screw up.)
song i associate with them:  Oh no, I can’t think of one for Arthur either!
favorite picture of them:  Also hecking cute. (Okay, so really I just posted my two favorite Molly and Arthur ones.)
