- this older actor/author/who the fuck ever hearing that stephanie is 16 (which is not true she’s even younger!) and eying her up and down and going “sweet sixteen” made me sick to my stomach, thanks!

- also the youtube comments are this are grossing me out. no, stephanie should not have lied about her age. but according to the lie she told to try to make herself seem cooler (probably not originally thinking it would actually lead to anything), she was still only 16 years old, and this guy was in his thirties at least. and i saw a couple of “meh not great” comments but the one that just straight up says the whole thing is her fault�� hello? she’s a teenager, and he’s a grown adult man. they are Not on equal playing fields of wrong here.

- like i do think stephanie should listen to her friends that it’s not a good idea to call him of course. she’s very much in that mode she’s been in all season where she wants boys to like her and for people see her as older and more mature (and confident) than she really is, and it’s been causing her to make a lot of decisions where she feels like she’s acting ‘adult’ but is really compromising her safety.

- but it’s still literally his fault. “the older” she’s pretending to be is a junior in high school, not an adult. the guy should still 500% know better. (and he does! he just doesn’t care until he finds out she’s even younger, and even then, it’s not that he wants to do the right thing at all: he speeds away after understanding just how much trouble he could get in.

- i can kind of see what they’re going for with lucy shoplifting as a way of acting out/because her parents aren’t around to enforce rules. not sure how the story is landing for me as a whole though.

- the car scene is Incredibly scary! glad nothing worse happened but yikes. like… A) he shouldn’t have gone out with her at all B) the Second she expressed discomfort/wanting to go home, he should have backed off, and C) literally chasing after and trying to touch her after she has expressed Extreme Fear and literally run after the car to get away from him… god. this all would have been terrible and scary behavior even if she was an adult, but the fact that he thinks she’s 16 (and she is actually 14) adds an extra horror factor to it.

- running away the second she tells him she’s really 14… like sir you get that it wasn’t better when she was supposedly 16 right?

- i do appreciate that they showed lucy trying to tell the cops voula didn’t do anything, and it is genuinely very heart-wrenching to watch even the officer seem pretty concerned that they can’t reach her parents while she is literally getting charged for stealing.

i really liked lucy so i'd probably make another friend for her. i think it'd use molly ringwald as the fc. have them clash in their ideals sometimes but still be close friends. they have sleepovers a lot, in that lucy would come to her house because she knows lucy's parents aren't great but it's an unspoken part of reality they don't like to face.

she'd be fringe friends with erica and heather, not being too fond of their instigating ways and flighty attitudes but they all like lucy so they get along for her sake. i think she'd be friends with snake simply because they're both dealing with being tall and awkward in their bodies compared to their friends.

honestly, i think i'd make her asexual and try to kiss guys and be into the dating scene like all her friends are and feel like something's wrong with her but she can't figure out what it is and why isn't she fitting in with her guy-obsessed friends? so that makes her try too hard and she ends up in a situation she isn't prepared for and doesn't understand. (TW: i'm thinking maybe she ends up groomed by someone and dealing with the fallout from that.) maybe she was a gymnast or a ballerina until she got too tall or had too many surgeries and then ended up with a pill addiction she's trying to hide.

i'm trying to think of plots if feel degrassi didn't do or could do better but man have they done a lot!

no name for her yet, though. i might just keep my life super simple and name her molly after the fc.

i do think the plot in “a helping hand” is one of the better portrayals/handlings of grooming in the franchise. tng had a serious problem of romanticizing student teacher/relationships (paige and mr. o, sav and ms. oh were both definite cases of this. the latter even moreso. tristan and mr. yates were Slightly better, but i remember feeling like the ball really got dropped and dealing with the fallout). whereas here, you’re supposed to get a sense of what a predatory dynamic the one between lucy and mr. colby pretty much right away, and the show also leans into showing how kids who already vulnerable in some way (like lucy’s parents seeming largely very absent and neglectful) makes them more susceptible to this kind of manipulation.

i do think one thing that tng had going for it that djh doesn’t as much id that, while both shows were episodic, tng was in a time period was certain shows were Starting to move toward more serialized storytelling, so some of the more serious storylines had time and room to grow, especially by s3 and esp s4. i think if this story were being written today, the dynamic between mr. colby and lucy probably would have been written out over at least a few episodes.

watching DJH 2x04 where Shane and Spike's mom really have her back at the dinner with his parents makes me feel so warm, but also so sad knowing what happens later. I can't believe this baby is Emma! Excited to rewatch the first seasons of TNG with all of the DJH/DH context.
