Hey! Trans woman here, and I saw your post about recognizing the gender of trans men, which I agree very much with!

I do have a question about one point on that list, i.e. "validating the gender of trans men for the purpose of telling them that they have male privilege"

Are you referencing when people, mostly women, try to remind trans men that because they are men, that they occupy a place above women in the patriarchy, which is baked into our society?

Because if that were the case it would seem pretty silly to be men, and not recognize that that puts you above certain people in today's society, just like me being a woman puts me below certain people in today's society. Not recognizing that that is how it works today makes the whole system really resilient to change.

My point was that while trans men are men,they do not have systemic privileges.

Trans manhood and cis manhood are treated differently by our society.The only group of men who truly have unconditional systemic privileges are white perisex monogender non-disabled cishet men. Trans men are still marginalized,even if they are men. They still face misogyny,work discrimination,discrimation in reproductive and in general medical care,etc.

Trans men can only have access to CONDITIONAL privileges,and that is also only if they pass and are stealth. But that's not the case for every trans men. There are many trans men who do not pass,who cannot pass or who just do not want to pass as men.Calling yourself a man and having he/him in your bio doesnt inherently suddenly give you privileges. They are not rewarded with privileges the moment they start calling themselves men and that they change their pronouns to he/him. And even passing trans men who are stealth can still be victim of things like reproductive care and general medical care discrimination.

There is even a specific form of discrimination for trans men,transandrophobia.Transandrophobia can take many forms,like how they are constantly threaten with corrective rape with the intention of detransitioning them and forcing them to become pregnant to pull them back into the closet. Or how they are more likely to be treated even worse than cis women in reproductive and general medical care systems,for exemple being refused into specific spaces of reproductive or general medical care because they are ''women's spaces only'',even they should absolutly be allowed access to these spaces.Or how their issues are constantly being down-played by people. Or how these same people are trying to seperate their identity into two parts : ''transgender'' and ''men''.Or how these people are then trying to claim that trans men aren't oppressed for being men,only for being transgender (by experiencing transphobia) or/and because they were (usually) afab (by experiencing misogyny),instead of acknowledging how the three parts of their identity that is being transgender AND having a manhood that is not perceived as ''correct'' by society AND having (usually) been afab (and all the other potential aspects of their identity) work together (as in cannot be seperated because each parts of their identity have their own influence) to create a unique form of oppression. Or how how they are both infantilized (''poor little delusional women who were manipulated into cutting off healthy breast tissues'') and vilanized (''evil people trying to manipulate young girls into cutting off their breast tissues and who are a threat to women's safety if they dare to share spaces with them'').There are many more exemples of this,but it would take hours to list all of them. So,no. I do not think being a trans man inherently make someone ''above women'' in the patriarchal system. The patriarchal system do not like trans manhood. The patriarchal system do not reward trans manhood. The patriarchal system only see trans manhood as a threat to the status quo.The current system we live in only reward white perisex monogender non-disabled cisgender manhood. Trans men are affected by the patriarchy just as much as the rest.And no amount of going on Tumblr and telling every trans men on this app that they should ''start acknowledging their male privileges'' in the name of ''intersectionality'' (which ironically,not acknowledging the nuances on how trans men can be uniquely affected by the patriarchy and treating their experiences as a 1:1 copy of cis manhood is the complete opposite of what intersectionality stands for) can change it.

big laurance alternates au post!!

hi welcome to my laurance alternates au post i'm just gonna drop everything on y'all tehee:)) i will share it with somewhat of a narrative but it's not going to be fully fleshed out fic or art atm i apologize... i hope you can enjoy it even if it's unpolished!! with alternates ending tmrw i just really wanted to yap about him before it's over!!! alternates spoilers ahead btw, go watch if you haven't... now say hi to my laurance !!

i have a couple other doodles and writing snippets i will share when relevant in the post!

the au picks up just after the events of episode 4. the group is making their way through the street when aphmau's walkie-talkie starts popping static. they all look around frantically, but instead of any alternates, they notice someone poking out from the rubble... and then notice it's laurance! (or looks like him...)

That was when Aphmau spotted a familiar face in the rubble. She couldn't believe it. Covered in debris, he was... "Laurance?" Aphmau gasped softly. Then it tore out of her - "LAURANCE!" "Aphmau, careful!" Aphmau ignored Travis, rushing to the rubble. "He might still be alive! We have to help him!" "He might be an Alternate!"

aphmau immediately starts digging him out - she can't lose anyone else, not now. travis and katelyn are hesitant, but eventually katelyn starts helping too (extremely ineffectively; she's pretty weak by this point. this is what convinced travis to start digging laurance out, too.)

"Please be alive, please be alive, please, please, please," Aphmau pleaded, voice thick with unshed tears so she could focus her energy on digging Laurance out from the rubble. "Please be Laurance," Travis groaned in response. Aphmau started with a "Travis!..." but ended with a "...Please, be Laurance..."

the first thing laurance sees when his eyes flutter open is aphmau's face - and the first thing he realizes is that he has absolutely no idea where he is. the first thing he feels is pain, all over. something is wrong with him, and he can tell it immediately.

before anyone can ask HIM anything, he asks if aphmau's alright, even while bleeding from the head.

the group then asks him the question we have all been asking him for years - "Where have you been, Laurance???"

his answer? anticlimactic. "I... I don't know?"

travis immediately finds that suspicious, and starts grilling him, standing defensively in front of katelyn, but aphmau tells him to stop. aphmau suggests that he must have hit his head, and katelyn mumbles an agreement. travis momentarily shuts it, but he's not happy about it. aphmau also suggests laurance must have seen the tv broadcast and was looking for her. laurance squints, trying to remember anything through the haze, and...

"Aphmau!" Suddenly, he was grabbing her arms, his eyes wild. Aphmau gasped and the entire group tensed. "I was! I was looking for you!" Travis stepped forward quickly. "LET GO OF--!" Laurance quickly loosed his hands. "TRAVIS, WAIT! Laurance..." she said, and Laurance couldn't remember ever seeing her look so anguished. Not that he could remember much of anything. A gritty determination settled on her brows - "How do I know it's really you?" "I..." "Tell me something only Laurance would know!" she demanded, and Laurance was instantly convinced he ought to... but he couldn't remember anything. His face twisted in horror, a deep dread settling in him in a place he couldn't name. "Aphmau, I..." Suddenly, it came to him, warm like an early autumn day. He was young, and Aphmau was younger, and they were at the park... He was jealous, because he saw her with Garroth... Unable to stop himself from smiling lopsidedly at the memory, he told her, "In high school, I asked you to go in a photo booth with me, and I kissed you on the third flash." "Laurance!" Aphmau cheered, launching herself into hugging him. He tried not to wince too much.

aphmau then checks him for injuries (he winced), asking him where it hurts (his answer is 'everywhere'). katelyn snarks, "Your head's bleeding, let's start with that." she's also leaning on travis and she looks like shit. laurance is immediately concerned, but when he tries to ask her if she's okay, she just reminds him that he's the one bleeding.

travis steps forward and patches up laurance, katelyn lends him a hairtie, and they get moving!

laurance tries to play it cool, but he knows something is wrong with him. things come back to him slowly - when the first emergency broadcast came on, he was with cadenza, babysitting caleb... it interrupted his cartoons, and scared him... then... something in the basement...? how did he get in the street? what happened to cadenza and caleb???

unfortunately with that we've finished one of the most developed segments... but more DOES happen after that!!! if people are interested i will post more!!! points of interest: where are cadenza (there's a very cool answer to this imo!!) and caleb??? wtf happened in the basement??? and laurance's #1 question ofc:

I'm seeing the whole "If you don't like something stay out of the fandom tags" commentary again. Honestly, it bugs me quite a bit. I would say that I try to not piss in people's cheerios often. I try to not just complain for the sake of yelling about something. I do believe everyone should get to enjoy what they enjoy whether I like it or not.

but I also think people who like a certain kind of story and watch things with the hope they will get what they like, and then are disappointed, also deserve community.

I think the opinion that all people are doing this to troll or because they enjoy complaining is a bad take, at least in the fandoms I'm in. When I get that stubborn about a show it's because I genuinely loved something about it and I now have passionate opinions about it. If I didn't care, I would not be posting about it. I would just forget it.

And yes, there are different levels of critique that are productive and others that are not. But having people be like - have your feelings but keep it to yourself or only your dash where others may or may not have the same feelings - maybe are harmless when you are annoyed that an adult show has all the plot points of a high school story, but are concerning when the post is talking about the pair the spare where there is no recognition that they had painted the antagonist as an assaulter and are now rehabilitating him with no effort at all. When you start dictating what is acceptable and unacceptable fandom opinions, you start walking the line of censoring voices that should be boosted.

In my opinion, fandom is at its best when you are hearing other points of view and gaining more understanding of media by listening to other voices. It's another part of the transformative nature of fandom.

And It's so easy here to block people or filter people and tags if it's really something you don't want to see. The expectation yet again that someone else should be responsible for your experience is beyond my brain capacity.

I do know how hard it is to see a huge fandom reaction that doesn't align with yours -I have experienced it both in loving something and hating something. But that is why we all need to find our community and well, on tumblr, it's in the tags.

He’s not wrong. While the slope of the hill is nice and gentle with lush grass all the way to the shores of Nirvata Lake, there’s still a large boulder halfway down it that does not look like it is going to move, regardless of how strong Twilight is.

Wild rolls his eyes. “Farosh’s lightning, first the Talus, now the boulder!”

Flora snickers at that.

Ah, yes, the Stone Talus.

Considering how Wild had dealt with the last Talus they’d come across – an odd combination of a few bomb arrows and more ladles than she realised he had even been carrying around in the Slate – it had somehow been just as entertaining to watch Twilight handle this one with an oversized ball and chain while Wild shouted unhelpful ideas and teasing words of encouragement from the sidelines.

“You see, I can kill a Talus, Wild.” Twilight shoots back. “But that’s a boulder. They're not exactly killable.”

“So don’t run into it.” Wild suggests with faux-innocence and darts away when Twilight goes to punch him in the shoulder. “Hey! I'm giving you solutions; what more do you want?!”

Also in my excursion to find the fic I referenced last post since like, it probably wouldn’t be that hard to find, Sentinel Prime/Optimus Prime is not a large tag on Ao3, I realized I need significantly more fics of them

Massive thank you to you and everyone else who calls out how shitty it is to get mad at peoples interpretations. Sleep tokens music is romantic. Its also toxic. These statements can coexist. Its not your business if someone plays bloodsport or vore or hell even atlantic at their wedding. Youre not them, you dont know what the music means to them. If you see a weird take just roll your eyes and move on, its not a big deal. Absolutely sick and fucking tired of all these "why are you calling this romantic/sexy? Youre stupid and a terrible person!" takes like fucking relax. Media literacy is important yes. Respecting that this music is dark and personal to vessel is also important. Same goes for respecting how people relate to the music in dark ways. But as long as people are not saying things directly to vessel or fans about how their individual trauma is sexy then just chill out and respect peoples different interpretations. It sucks that i cant talk about how i view certain songs without being called horrible things and having really fucked up vitriol aimed at me. Yall need to grow the fuck up and get over yourselves. Im not thinking of your personal shit when i call a certain song romantic/sexy, i dont even know you, sometimes im thinking of my own trauma actually lol. Lets all discuss this music maturely where we respect each other and what each of us as individuals bring to the table for interpretation, stop making this fandom toxic as hell for anyone who doesnt agree 100% with your own interpretation. (Also the whole "youre not allowed to say this song is romantic/sexy" thing is very dismissive of some peoples trauma in itself, it ignores how messy someones feelings toward their abusers/toxic partners can be. Pretty fucked up to call a trauma survivor stupid or a terrible person because a song reminds them of their positive feelings towards someone who hurt them) Anyways yeah, just tired of people being so harsh because they refuse to see other peoples perspectives. I genuinely think one of the most toxic aspects of this fandom is the vitriol over different interpretations, people act like outright children at times with it im ngl, especially with more sexual discussions. It also feels infantilizing towards vessel at times, hes a grown adult who put romantic/sexy elements in his music and he doesnt need people trying to protect him from those themes. Context post for the clueless ones - regarding my tags/replies

Here's the thing - I've been in fandoms for many, many, MANY years. This type of discussion isn't anything new nor unique to Sleep Token, but it sure does make a comeback quite often. It's tiring to keep repeating the same things over and over, but that's what fandom is all about isn't it?

Someone needs to say something, and I am not one to shy away from uncomfortable conversations like these. Something something, build your own community, be the change you wanna see, etc etc.

I've said pretty much everything I wanna say already under that post, but for the sake of clarity, and because I can't keep my mouth shut apparently -

Under the cut for length - you know the drill:

Music is art. And art is subjective. Meaning, each individual will have their own personal connection and interpretation of a given piece of art, which in this case is Sleep Token's music.

Did Vessel write the songs with a certain intent or meaning? Most likely yes! It's not hard to connect the dots and guess what events/emotions might've transpired and served as inspiration for them (accuracy to personal life is irrelevant and none of our business, but it's also no rocket science to understand what's been said).

Can we establish a base meaning for any given song, or better, can we have a general consensus of what a song is about based on its lyrics and themes? Absolutely! Not every song is like that, but we can all agree there's a lot of recurring themes of past relationships and mental health struggles.

Is it wrong to diminish the songs to one basic element (eg. the sexual undertones) and/or completely disregard the bigger, more important theme? I'd say it is.

Giving Atlantic as an example (which as a lot of you know, is my most favourite song of them and very dear to me): this one has some very blatant references to suicide and depression. Regardless of whether it is based on irl events or not (none of our business!!!), it is extremely heavy and emotionally charged. I find it incredibly disrespectful when people say random stuff during the rituals when he plays this one.

Or for example, how certain people reduce Sleep Token to "baby making metal", instead of acknowledging the insane (insane!) variety of genres and the profound lyricism they present.

Should we limit our views, and by extension, those of others, to surface-level interpretation, without allowing room for different views and interpretations, either fictional lore based or not? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Vessel himself said to "not restrict ourselves to labels or genres because music transcends it all" (paraphrasing here). It's literally their whole thing. It's very hypocritical to be shouting from the rooftops about "media literacy" and assuming people are stupid or idiots for not understanding the basic, surface-level meaning of a song, when Vessel himself constantly writes in metaphors and half-truths.

I've touched on this a lifetime ago on one of my analysis, but if you *actually* look at the lyrics, you'll realise Vessel hardly ever says what he means. There's always something else behind his words, something he purposefully keeps hidden. It really sneaks upon you sometimes! I'm over a year in and I still find something new everyday on their music. That man has a way to weave in a hundred and one statements under a single sentence, that is just truly beautiful to study.

Is, say, The Love You Want, about a man (Vessel) mourning the fact that his love isn't reciprocated? Yeah! Is it about someone who, despite knowing they can never receive from their lover the attention and affection and care they want, will stay by their side anyways? It is!

Is it about bitterness, spiteful accusations aimed at the one person who should love you fully? Or a reflection of how little self-regard the singer has, so much that they are willingly and actively choosing to stay in a sinking one-sided relationship, because the alternative is too painful to bare? Can you flip the switch and see it as someone who is obsessively pursuing another person, and painting themselves as a victim? All of this, yes!

You can even eliminate the romantic aspect all together and apply it to a relationship with the self (past or future, or an alter ego), or a parental figure. The options are endless. There isn't one universal truth when it comes to music, and as such, all of these takes are 100% correct.

Many statements can be true at the same time - it doesn't make one more true or correct than the other. Simply different. The way we connect with music is very much dictated by our own life experiences, and no two people have lived the exact same life.

Can you prefer a certain way to look at a song, or completely disagree with certain takes? Absolutely! I know I sure as hell do! That's normal and expected and part of the fun in being in a community such as ours. More people means more ways to look at a song - isn't that just wonderful?!

Now, this is very obvious for most of us, but some people, especially in the younger rage, have been taught to look at things in a very black and white way. Not to be that person, but the truth is that the rise in awareness of social issues and "pc-ness", is slowly starting to eliminate the possibility of things being flawed and nuanced.

If you're wrong, you're awful. If you're right, you're obnoxious. Made a mistake? Get cancelled. Grow from your mistakes, but not like that. Learn from your actions, but change your whole personality in a day otherwise you're problematic.

You know what I mean.

Life isn't black and white. Art isn't black and white. Music isn't black and white. What may seem like a toxic, dark, obsessive depiction of a relationship to you, might translate to the deepest and most truest of loves to me. I can acknowledge something is Not Right, while still drawing my own conclusions.

Is Blood Sport a sad af song? Yeah! Definitely not the first thing I'd think of when in a happy relationship. But maybe that's the point. And maybe I do. And that's okay, and none of anyone's business. "Okay but The Apparition isn't a good example of a healthy and romantic-" TO YOU! Maybe that's what love looks like to me! Maybe I just happen to be into it! And what about it?

Maybe to me love comes with all the ugly sides too. The violence, the despair, the self-doubt. Who are you to dictate what I can or can't think? I highly doubt Vessel would go 🗣️ "WRONG! NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT! >:::(", so why would you?

You can, and should, discuss the songs with others! Maybe some people do genuinely need a fresh pair of eyes to help them get to the juicy core of the songs - that's why we're here! To discuss, and exchange ideas! You can, and should, call people out when their engagement with the music is being harmful to others (joking and laughing during Missing Limbs? No bueno. Speculating about Vessel's personal life? VERY no bueno. Choosing a potentially weird song to walk down the aisle? None of your business + not your wedding + you weren't even invited + none of your business. Notice how I've been repeating that. Notice again).

You shouldn't, however, shame and ridicule others for having different views from you.

I think, rather than engaging in pointless discussions and start accusing people of being this or that, we should all exercise a little "don't like? scroll past". Is it harming you or others? No? Then scroll past! Is it an awful, truly horrendous take about something you're really passionate about? Okay! Disgusting! Scroll past! Good for them! 👍

Also - keep an open mind. We're all doing this living businesse for the first time, no one holds all the answers to everything. It's okay to change your mind. It's okay to say the wrong thing and backtrack. It's okay to make a mistake and learn and grow.

You know what's not okay? Being a dick to others because the thing you like is being misinterpreted. It's hard, I know!!! You can block people! You can scroll past! You can look at pictures of your favourite vessel and cleanse your brain!!!! I know I do!!!!!

And this is a last afterthought but - you don't get to complain about the fandom you're in if you're doing nothing to change that. I see many, maaaaany of you bitch about this and that, while having 0 engagement aside from the bitching. Like?? Maybe if you spent more time reblogging cool art or gifs and less time whining about literally everything, this would be a much more pleasant space!! And I DO get to be a little petty here because I sure do try my best to make this a fun and nice community. I am allowed a little bitching 😌

tried my hand at some pretty-for-the-sake-pretty art of Steve! took me a bit to figure out what the hell i was even doing but im so so happy with where he ended up!!

last two were most liked by my discord friends (thank you guys for helping me decide what i was doing 🙏) and i think i like these four all pretty equally, one just matched the vibes i was originally going for best
