Which DND Class Suits Your Personality?
I didn’t make this quiz but I thought it might be fun for my muses to do. EVERY SINGLE MUSE ON THE BLOG IS LISTED HERE, THIS IS A VERY LONG POST.
Anyway, results under the cut.
King
Paladin
You’re an idealistic person who is not afraid to stand up for what you believe in. You’ve got strong opinions and you are fully prepared to back up those opinions with your fists, if necessary. Sometimes you might come on a bit strong, but you always have good intentions. You’re very determined and you don’t back down easily. You have a protective side and, ultimately, you’re just trying to make the world a better place.
Oath of the Watchers
The Oath of the Watchers binds paladins to protect mortal realms from the predations of extraplanar creatures, many of which can lay waste to mortal soldiers. Thus, the Watchers hone their minds, spirits, and bodies to be the ultimate weapons against such threats. To a Watcher, keeping a healthy suspicion and awareness about one's surroundings is as natural as wearing armor in battle. You’re a particularly observant person who might be a little too suspicious for your own good. You spend so much time looking out for potential threats that you have a hard time relaxing. You’re very detail-oriented and you like to be prepared for any situation that might come up. You take your responsibilities seriously and you hold yourself to high standards.
Purple
Warlock
You’re a charming and ambitious person who cares a lot about the people you are close to. Sometimes you might worry that you rely too much on the help of others, as if you’re not good enough on your own, but you have a knack for pulling out unexpected skills or solutions at just the right moment. You may have a bit of a lazy side at times. You have dreams for the future and you want to end up better off than where you began.
The Archfey
Your patron is a lord or lady of the fey, a creature of legend who holds secrets that were forgotten before the mortal races were born. This being's motivations are often inscrutable, and sometimes whimsical, and might involve a striving for greater magical power or the settling of age-old grudges. You’re a persuasive and charming person who tends to talk your way out of trouble. You’re very aware of the face you present to the world and you often change your behavior or even your appearance to suit the situation or the people you’re with. You may have a tendency to ignore or run away from your problems. Although you might come across as flighty, eccentric, or unpredictable at times, you have a knack for figuring out other people and finding a way to turn situations to your advantage.
The Mercenaries
Striker
Rogue
You’re a practical and unusually resourceful person with big dreams that may or may not involve copious amounts of money or treasure. You’re ambitious, you know what you want, and you’ll do whatever you can to get it. Some people might think you’re selfish, but you know it’s important to take care of yourself first. You thrive under pressure and you might have a bit of a mischievous or chaotic side.
Assassin
You focus your training on the grim art of death. Stealth, poison, and disguise help you eliminate your foes with deadly efficiency. You’re a pragmatic and straightforward person who doesn’t like to waste your time or energy on people and things that aren’t worth it. You’re at your best when you have time to prepare and go into things with a plan, though you’re certainly capable of improvising if the plan doesn’t work out. You’re observant, always paying attention to your environment and taking note of things that might be useful. Once you set your mind on something, you pursue it with a focused and intense determination.
Primal
Monk
You’re a reflective and ambitious person who likes to push yourself to see how far you can go, always seeking self-improvement. You’ve cultivated some impressive skills over the years through practice, study, and hard work, though others might just call you naturally talented without recognizing the effort you put in to get there. You know that there’s a time for thoughtful analysis and a time for purposeful application of brute force, and you’re equally skilled at both.
Way of the Four Elements
You follow a monastic tradition that teaches you to harness the elements. When you focus your ki, you can align yourself with the forces of creation and bend the four elements to your will, using them as an extension of your body. Some members of this tradition dedicate themselves to a single element, but others weave the elements together. You’re a thoughtful and resourceful person who is in tune with the natural world. You’re capable of coming up with inventive solutions to problems using the things around you and you may find that your mood can be affected by your physical environment. You’re open-minded and you know that it is important to draw wisdom from many different places. You feel that it is important to be aware of both your strengths and your weaknesses, and you seek to bring balance to your life and possibly also to the world around you.
Bit/Ballista
Barbarian
You’ve got a lot of Big Emotions and that’s okay. You’re driven by your instincts and you work best when you’re acting in the moment rather than getting tripped up by planning. You’re a fairly grounded person but you definitely lead with your heart more than your head. You enjoy life’s simple pleasures like good food, drink, and friends. You have a bit of a protective side, especially toward the people you’re close to.
Path of Wild Magic
Many places in the multiverse abound with beauty, intense emotion, and rampant magic; the Feywild, the Upper Planes, and other realms of supernatural power radiate with such forces and can profoundly influence people. As folk of deep feeling, barbarians are especially susceptible to these wild influences, with some barbarians being transformed by the magic. These magic-suffused barbarians walk the Path of Wild Magic. You’re an intuitive person who is guided by your instincts and can’t always explain why you do what you do. You just kind of do what feels right. Sometimes this works out for you and sometimes things don’t turn out the way you were expecting. You may be a bit unpredictable or chaotic. You’re fairly perceptive and you often notice things that others might overlook.
Logo
Ranger
You’re a thoughtful and resourceful person who likes to observe the world around you. You feel at peace when surrounded by nature and might feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed by busy places like bustling cities. You might have some very specialized skills that aren’t often relevant to daily life, but are incredibly helpful in the right situation. You’re practical and an explorer at heart.
Swarmkeeper
Feeling a deep connection to the environment around them, some rangers reach out through their magical connection to the world and bond with a swarm of nature spirits. The swarm becomes a potent force in battle, as well as helpful company for the ranger. You feel that humans were not meant to be solitary creatures and you strongly value community or the relationships in your life. The bonds you share with others are very important to you and you might sometimes spend so much time thinking about others that you forget to think about or take care of yourself. You’re not afraid to ask for help when you need it and you’re just as willing to help others in return. You like to feel connected to the world, like you’re part of something bigger.
The Hollowheads
Chosen One
Ranger
You’re a thoughtful and resourceful person who likes to observe the world around you. A monster slayer seeks out vampires, dragons, evil fey, fiends, and other magical threats. Trained in supernatural techniques to overcome such monsters, slayers are experts at unearthing and defeating mighty, mystical foes. You’re not afraid of the things that go bump in the night and you might seek out things that are spooky or macabre. You’re very determined, sometimes to the point of being stubborn. You’re an insightful person and you know how to pay attention to your intuition when you need to. You’re resilient and it takes a lot to bring you down.
Dark Lord
Arcane Trickster
Some rogues enhance their fine-honed skills of stealth and agility with magic, learning tricks of enchantment and illusion. You’re an adaptable person who likes to cultivate a range of skills and interests. Once you decide to pick up a new skill or hobby, you’re more than willing to put in a little time and effort to learn how to do it well. You like to feel competent and powerful. You’re not always the most direct person and you may sometimes hide your true thoughts and feelings behind lies or misdirection. Some people might not know what to expect of you, or you might be a bit misunderstood, but you’re capable of a lot more than some people give you credit for.
Victim
The Undying
Death holds no sway over your patron, who has unlocked the secrets of everlasting life, although such a prize – like all power – comes at a price. Once mortal, the Undying has seen mortal lifetimes pass like the seasons, like the flicker of endless days and nights. It has the secrets of the ages to share, secrets of life and death. You’re an ambitious person who feels that you can find a way around even the most difficult of challenges if you put your mind to it. You like to push the limits, to see how far you can go, and you dislike when you’re forced to confront your own restrictions (or the limitations of the physical world). You’re the type of person who enjoys finding loopholes to rules. You have big dreams for your future and you’re set on pursuing them, even if naysayers might call your goals impractical.

Barbarian
You’ve got a lot of Big Emotions and that’s okay. You’re driven by your instincts and you work best when you’re acting in the moment rather than getting tripped up by planning. When a barbarian who follows this path rages, the barbarian contacts the spirit world and calls on these guardian spirits for aid. You’re a protective person who feels connected to your roots. You aren’t afraid to ask for help when you need it, and you are more than willing to help out others in return when they’re in need. Although you tend to live mostly in the present, you feel that the past has a lot to teach us. Swords
Bards of the College of Swords are called blades, and they entertain through daring feats of weapon prowess. Though they use their weapons to entertain, they are also highly trained and skilled warriors in their own right. You’re an entertainer at heart and you love to spread joy to others. You treat the world as your stage and you want to make sure your performance is up to par. You might be a thrill seeker or the kind of person who goes through life with a YOLO mindset. You like to be liked and you’re probably a bit of a joker or prankster, but you also know how to take things seriously and get down to business when you need to. Though you might come across as all fun and games, you’re not the type to back down from a challenge just because it seems hard.
Yellow
Artificer
You’re a logical person who wants to understand how the world works and, more importantly, how you can make it better. Artillerists are capable of creating weapons to aid them, such as eldritch cannons and arcane firearms. You’re a bold and straightforward person who’s not afraid of a little conflict. You may not be the most subtle person, but no one can deny that you have a certain flair.

The Genie
You have made a pact with one of the rarest kinds of genie, a noble genie. Noble genies are varied in their motivations, but most are arrogant and wield power that rivals that of lesser deities. They delight in turning the table on mortals, who often bind genies into servitude, and readily enter into pacts that expand their reach. You’re an ambitious and resourceful person with big dreams, and you’re not above taking shortcuts to achieve your goals when needed. You have a certain taste for luxury and comfort. Background: Hanna is some sort of fairy that arrived in the land and got chaperoned by Captain Puffy and Purpled. A kind, cheerful lover of decor and cleaning up messes she immediately “built" a good relationship with Foolish, for their common passions. However, this personality of her was tainted when the red vines of the EGG covered her house and created a new evil persona in her despite the efforts of Awsamdude to remove them. This new persona was more easy to control under the influence of the EGG and it showed off especially during the events of the Red Banquet when she betrayed (almost) everyone and allowed Foolish to be sacrificed to the altar. After Quackity showed up with the mercenaries Technoblade & Purpled the Eggpyre was forced to flee especially when Puffy landed a killing blow on Antfrost. Only when Awsamdude sealed the EGG in an obsidian box his influence was reduced and a distraught Hanna was devastated for what she did. However, she successfully entered a “public service” at Sam bank to redeem herself under a VERY strict leash. After a while, she (re)gained wings but lost them because of BoomerNa and she got at war with him. Hanna lost friends, her wings and so much more and she wished with all her heart to recover all of that. “If it wasn’t for that EGG… all of this would have never happened.” She muttered on her bed as she felt the world falling on her. “Does this fair lady wishes for a new chance? It can be done.” A voice was heard. “Who?! Who is this? How did you enter my house?” Hanna jumped on her bed and a bit nervously grabber her sword. “I am not in your house. But my proposal is simple: find me, and i will grant your wish. ONE wish. Limited only by your imagination. The others have accepted.” Hanna stuttered: “Who?” The others? Does that mean also the rest of the people of the land have accepted? Boomer too? Seeing an opportunity to AT LEAST recover her wings, she clenched her teeth and whispered: ”I accept.” The world shifted but her being started to split apart. Screaming she tumbled down and landed in a forest. As soon as she recovered she stood up in the form of a small fairy with WINGS! “Oh dear, it appears not all went straight, look my dear.” Hanna saw a figure clad in a dark armor stand up, dark wings made of vines… It was… HER? but the look in her eyes… vicious, malevolent, merciless. Hanna observed as “She” looked upon her and closed her helmet to then take flight on a dark obsidian horse quickly disappearing from her sight. “What was that?” She screamed. The voice spoke surprised: “Oh my! Apparently a part of yourself is still linked to that red thing! Well, i am sure you will catch up. Have fun finding me!” Hanna tried to call the voice in vain. Hanna knew, she had to hurry… least that “thing” did something very wrong.

Note
Do you think Runaan met Ethari at training or in his workshop?
I love how those are our two favorite headcanons, anon. Those are the two things we know about young Ruthari: Ethari had a workshop to work in, and Runaan trained a lot.
But I always like to imagine the rest of their lives in the village, too. Where they lived and with whom, what public spaces they used, where they might congregate even though they’re introverts. I’ve thought up plenty of meet-cutes for them, and they’re all adorable. Maybe they met in the market, or at the village gate, or at a dance, or even on a tour for newcomers. (Do introverts give tours, maybe they just put up a lot of helpful arrow signs, is that what all those runes are)
Tumblr media
Realistically, I think the choke point for these meet-cutes is Runaan’s routine. He was very focused on his training, so unless he absolutely had to be doing anything else, he was probably doing that. We generally assume that his training was hand-to-hand combat, swordplay, jumping around in the trees, stealth training, and stuff like that. But a skilled warrior will know all sorts of things behind the edge of the blade he wields.
He learned about poison, probably, which kind works best for what sort of mission (if it varies much which it may not) and how to mix and apply it. He learned about anatomy and where to strike. There’s a lot of A&P involved in battle. My brown belt exams were very Latin-heavy because of all the anatomy I had to label and demonstrate function and weaknesses thereof. If you’re going to take a life as swiftly as possible to prevent suffering and speed justice, you need to know exactly where to strike, and with what.
Which of course leads us to weapons. Runaan may have had an early preference for some weapon or another, but every assassin in his squad fights with a unique weapon, so there must be an extensive testing phase to learn strengths and weaknesses in order to determine each assassin’s best weapon set when they joined up. I’m sure they can all use each other’s weapons to some degree, too. Squad camaraderie be like. But visiting a weaponsmith seems really likely, with potentially several clusters of visits around new weaponry types over time.
Tumblr media
Alternately, maybe the craftsman does house calls and takes his apprentices to watch the new assassin recruits train. Maybe Ethari got paired up with Runaan to sketch him running katas with various weapons to see how his flow went with each one. Maybe Ethari, who’s really observant, actually had a good tip to share. Maybe Runaan didn’t appreciate the implication that he wasn’t perfect. (can I get Runaan in Zuko’s topknot but it’s a long white ponytail instead? I’m super seeing it here)
If Runaan had any say in his curricular wanderings, he’d probably prefer to stick with his swords instead of talking to people. Obviously he can muster his courage to talk to Ethari as often as he can make up an excuse to do so (jhfskifhik so cute), but he was a broody teenager with very stabby instincts, so I can totally see him refusing to leave the training arena when he was supposed to go meet some soft crafting apprentice for some measurements or something, how boring, ugh, and he just kept training as if he couldn’t tell what time it was. And Ethari got nervous that the new recruit had gotten lost, so he went in search of Runaan and found him in the arena, whaling away on some poor set of illusion dummies. (okay, there’s a whole oneshot in there but la la la I have several unfinished fics already, shoo)
Hierarchy is very important in rigid societies. The village’s head craftsman probably wouldn’t bother much with fresh recruits when he had full-fledged veteran assassins to see to, and whose styles he knew well. It might be customary to pair a young apprentice with an assassin once they get along, and expect them to work together for life. And honestly, all the better if they fall in love. Ethari’s work is of the highest quality because he wants to keep his husband as safe as possible, and Runaan is as efficient and deadly as he is because he wants to return home safely to his husband every time. Maybe it’s a high and holy tradition that smiths and assassins fall in love? That would be adorable.
Tumblr media
I could daydream Ruthari meet-cutes all day long, anon. It’s so much fun. But ultimately I think the most likely place they met was at least one of those two you mentioned. If not both at the same time. How very Moonshadow.

Tatooine - Chapter 55 (HK-47)
Link to the masterpost. Chapter 54. Chapter 56.
@averruncusho thank you for reading, you get a tag
I just got a bad feeling. Something’s coming. Or we’re getting closer to something. Dark. And it’s close. “Hey, Mission?”
“Yeah?”
“You have your stealth field generator on?”
“Always.”
“Would you do me a favor - turn it on and just look around the corner.”
“Is something wrong, Rena?” Bastila asks me.
“Bad feeling,” I say, “I want to confirm.”
“Does this bad feeling involve me cracking some skulls?” Canderous asks eagerly.
“I’ll go check it out,” Mission says, and she activates her stealth field. We wait about a minute or so before she comes back. “Three Dark Jedi,” she says, “Mean looking. They got face masks on.”
“They were probably sent by Lord Malak,” Bastila says, “Is there any way we can get past without fighting them?”
“Not without tripping the poison mines I set in front of them,” Mission says proudly.
Canderous beams, laughing. “Smart kid!” he says. (And he gets away with calling her kid - I love their friendship so much.)
“Well done, Mission,” Bastila says, and I expect a “but” coming, “Although in the future I would advise against taking such risks.” Not a “but”, an “although.” How surprising.
“You’re welcome,” Mission says. God, I love her. “We should probably go say hi before someone else triggers the mines.”
“Good idea,” I say, “Ready everyone? Let’s go fight the Sith.”
We round the corner, and right on cue, three Sith. Three mines. Lord Malak was most displeased when he learned you had escaped Taris alive!” one of them says, but I can’t tell which one because of the masks, “He has promised a great reward to whoever destroys you.”
“Why don’t you come collect that reward, you pack of hairless banthas?” They step forward - and have their faces flooded with poison gas. And in the chaos, Canderous gets off a shot at each of them. When the gas clears, they hit the ground dead.
Canderous sighs. “This is getting too easy,” he says, “Have the Jedi lowered their standards or do the Sith just let in anybody with a chip on their shoulder and an axe to grind?”
“I assure you, it’s the latter,” Bastila says. Is… is she smiling? Is she smiling at Canderous? And he’s smiling back - oh, my God, this is so cute!
“Oh?” Canderous says - oh, wow, he’s making a move, is he? “So if I ever went up against you, you’d give me a good fight?”
He’s trying to flirt, but Bastila is working more the friend angle. “If it ever came to that.”
Canderous backs off the flirting angle, but that doesn’t stop Mission from saying, “Sheesh, get a room, guys!”
Canderous - holy hell, Canderous blushes. Bastila says, “I hardly know what you’re talking about, Mission.” She brushes her hair away from her face. “We should get moving. I know Rena is especially eager to see this droid.”
“I am, yes,” I agree, sifting through what the Dark Jedi dropped, including some lightsaber crystals and a datapad from Malak with a description of me and Bastila. Seems like these guys won’t be the last Dark Jedi we face. “But the cantina is also around the corner and we should ask about your mom.”
“Rena, we really don’t have to,” Bastila says, stammering a bit, “If it takes time away from the mission…”
“I’ll take care of it,” Mission says, “I’ll ask around, you guys go see the droid.”
“No arguments here,” Canderous says, “I’ve spent more than enough time in cantinas for one lifetime.”
“I agree,” Bastila says, “I see no point in waiting there if my mother is no longer on the planet.”
“Yeah, you guys go have fun,” she says, “I’m going to hustle some nerf-herders out of their credits.”
“Don’t bet too much,” I say, and we head off to the droid shop.
Already I’m skeptical. There’s a droid out front with sand in his vents, still functioning somehow. You don’t store droids outside, dude, come on. We step inside, and there’s nobody out front to sell us anything. Wonderful service. I only see the one functional protocol droid, must be the one we’re looking for - may as well ask it to sell itself.
Wait, hang on -- “This droid has sand shields!”
“What?” Canderous says, because he wasn’t part of yesterday’s conversation.
“I thought you said you developed those?” Bastila asks.
“I thought I did.”
Then the droid activates. “Greeting: Hello to you, prospective purchaser. I am referred to as HK-47, a fully functional Systech Corporation droid skilled in both combat and protocol functions. Query: Would you be so kind as to purchase this model from Yuka Laka? It would serve my purposes to be removed from his ownership.”
“Certainly talks like a protocol droid,” Canderous scoffs.
“I’ve never heard of Systech Corporation,” Bastila says.
“No, neither have I,” I say, “but they seem to make good droids if this model is any indication.” The sand shields are still throwing me off; they look just like the ones I made for T3 yesterday. I look back at the droid. “What else does Systech make?” I ask him.
“Answer: With the restraining bolt in place, I do not have access to my memory core. I suspect, however, by the fine quality of my manufacture that they are a prestigious company, indeed. I suspect I am of unique construction,” the droid says, “…or perhaps I was intended for a very specific customer. How I ended up here I can hardly say. It is sufficient to say that I am a fully capable translator and cultural analyst, and I am also proficient in... personal combat.”
I pull out my microspanner and make a quick inspection of the restraining bolt. “Yeah, that thing’s on there good,” I say, “And it’s restricting access to your memory?”
“Statement: Indeed,” HK tells me, “It is possible that the Ithorian Yuka Laka placed the restraining bolt on me to prevent my return to a previous owner. It is also possible that the removal of the bolt will not restore memory functions. Without my memory, I do not know if I know the answer.” Yeah, that would certainly put a damper on things. “Do not interpret this as a reduction of my worth, however. My capabilities are quite expansive.”
“I can tell,” I say, still examining him with my spanner.
“What are you seeing, Rena?” Bastila asks.
“Well,” I say, “to be honest I’m not completely sure. I’m more familiar with utility droids. But I can tell this droid has everything a utility droid has and more. There’s a lot going on in here.” I tuck my spanner away. “Not much in the way of computer interfacing, but a droid like you, I’m not sure you need it,” I say to HK, “You said you’re a translator and a cultural analyst. I understand most languages pretty well myself, why would I need you?”
“Extrapolation: Intuitive language comprehension? That would be the result of recognition and training of Force sensitivity.”
“Smart droid,” Canderous comments.
“Your kind have little use of translation droids,” he says, “Of course, your kind also encounters danger on a far more frequent basis than the average citizen. You would do well to have me work for you, then, before someone else makes use of my… more exotic functions.”
Sounds like a low-key assassin droid to me. But I doubt anyone else knows that. “Well, I’m sold,” I say, “Is Yuka Laka around? I’ll see about purchasing you.”
“Statement: The fool Ithorian has decided I am to be an expensive purchase. He does this out of greed and not out of knowledge of my true capabilities.
“Advisement: I have observed him. He is a coward, and will be responsive to… aggressive bargaining.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” I say, then I call out, “Is the proprietor in?”
There is a very large metal clamor out of sight, followed by a garbled series of beeps and whistles and some swearing in Ithorese. When the Ithorian comes out of the back room, it is on a small wave of droid parts. “What is this?” he says, “A customer I don’t recognize? Perhaps you bring off-world credits to Yuka Laka?”
“Talk to me about HK-47.”
He ambles over to me. “It's a fine protocol translator. I think it's been modified. It claims to understand the Sand People dialect, and also has some armor mounts. Combat ready, perhaps?”
“I’m interested,” I say, sparing a glance back at HK, “Let’s talk price.”
“It's a very solid machine,” he says, considering a price, “in good shape. I can't let it go for less than 5000 credits.”
Yikes! “If that’s the price, you can keep it.”
“4000!” Yuka Laka quickly amends, “Not a credit less!”
HK was right, he is a coward. “That was quick. Desperate to sell?”
“Ah, no, not really,” he says unconvincingly, “but the first figure really was a little high. You never know, the occasional person bites right away.”
It’s still a bit high. “Perhaps I can convince you to go lower?”
“Lower?” he repeats in disbelief, “How low are you expecting me to go? These are difficult times.”
“Listen,” I say, trying to be charming - I’ve never had much luck with Ithorians when it comes to feminine wiles, but when it comes to business sense, they’ve always been receptive to me, “I’m a Republic droid tech. This war with the Sith has been moving farther and farther out to the Outer Rim. There’s been a greater and greater need for parts and capable droids, and yours is the only place to get them in Anchorhead.” I think I see him softening. “Now, when I go back to my superiors and they ask me about the business in Anchorhead, I can tell them one of two things. I could either tell them that Yuka Laka sells substandard tech at exorbitant prices, or that he’s a sharp-minded Ithorian with a keen business sense who’s willing to make a deal that will do him better in the long run.” Almost there, almost got him. “Which do you think will convince my bosses to come to your store?”
He’s so close. “And you think your superiors will listen to you?”
Bastila catches on. “Sir,” she says, “As a member of the Jedi Order, I can assure you that the Republic has the utmost trust in this woman.”
“You--” Yuka Laka says with a bit of a laugh, “You can’t expect me to give you the droid for nothing.”
“Of course not!” I say reassuringly, “That’s bad business. But it would also be bad business to quote me a price that I can’t take back to my superiors.”
Got him. “2750.”
“2500 even, and I’ll throw in a top-notch microspanner.”
“Done.” I hand him my microspanner - not even my good one but it’s still in good shape - and transfer him the 2500 credits. (Some credits come right back to me - Mission must be doing pretty good at Pazaak.) “Well, thank you very much. Just go on over and talk to it. I'll deactivate the restraining bolt when you take possession. It's a good purchase, especially if it actually speaks a Sand People dialect like it said. Now,” he says, “you’ll be sure to tell the Republic about this business deal?”
“Most definitely,” I say, “Next time the Republic fleet is in the area, expect an increase in profits.”
“I look forward to it,” he says.
“HK!” I call to the droid, “Let’s go.”
Yuka Laka pops off the restraining bolt. “Statement: I will enter into your service now, master. I am certain you will make adequate use of my primary functions. My gears are practically quivering with anticipation.”
When we step out, Bastila - I should have expected some disappointment from her - says to me, “Why did you lie to that man?”
“It wasn’t a complete lie - and you helped.”
“I did not lie!” she protests, “The Republic obviously has trust in you if they recruited you. You were lying - you certainly have no intention of informing your ‘Republic superiors’ of this transaction, do you?”
“If someone asks, sure.”
“And to expect more business the next time the Republic fleet enters the system?”
“Of course - economies get a bump whenever the fleet rolls in.” She’s still not satisfied. “You want long-term? I’ll give you long-term. We get a droid who can speak the Sand People dialect, we make peace with the Sand People, we find the Star Map, we leave, destroy the Star Forge and end the way. Instead of making a better life for one merchant, we make a better life for the galaxy. Now, is that an acceptable trade for you, or are you going to make me give back the droid, which will hinder the peacemaking?”
She tries to argue, but only stammers. Then she just gives up: “You are becoming a horrible influence on me.”
“Yeah, I like you, too.”
Just as we’re on our way back to the cantina for Mission, she finds us. “Okay, two things. Well, three things,” she says, correcting herself. “First off, they won’t let me play Pazaak in there anymore - “
“You hustler, I love you,” I say, and she smiles.
“Second, it didn’t take much asking to learn about Bastila’s mom. She’s there most days and yells at everybody.”
“That sounds like her,” Bastila comments.
“She wasn’t there just now, but tends to come later in the day according to the bartender. And third, apparently there’s a sandstorm coming and Czerka told all their miners to either come back or stay put.”
“Guess we’re not hitting the dunes today,” I say.
“We should return to the ship,” Bastila says, “We can continue our search tomorrow.”
“I tend to agree,” I say, “I want to look over HK, anyway.”
“Objection: Look over? I assure you, master, I am in prime condition!”
“I know,” I say, “but I’d like to know what ‘prime condition’ entails.”
“Statement: As you desire, master.”

[ Previous Chapter ] Genre: Action, violence, dark, angst, fluff. Word Count: 786. Characters: Arcann, Aryuni, Saxan.
The young Prince observed the swamp through his macrobinocular lenses. After being caught wandering the outskirts of the city alone, Arcann ordered a stricter security for his son, and it didn’t sit well with the boy. It was a good time to put his newly learned stealth skills to use, though. Avoiding the Knights searching for him was Saxan’s idea of fun.
“Prince Saxan! The Empress needs you back, urgent!”
He’s heard of this tactic before. Even fell for it, when he was six years old. Not this time!
“Great. We’ll never catch him like this. He’s getting aw--”
“Shh! He might be sneaking around.”
Saxan narrowed his eyes. He decided to sneak around another group of Knights to eavesdrop their suspicious conversation. Unfortunately, he was about to discover their plot the hard way.
“This Knight armor is suffocating! Why should a Sith Lord like me suffer for a spoiled brat! I’m missing my ventilated vest already.”
“The sooner we get rid of him; the sooner we can take out his Father.”
The revelation shocked the young Prince off-guard; he accidentally stepped on a branch. “That’s him!”
Using the Force to quickly close off his escape, the two disguised Sith Lords swung their lightsabers at Saxan in unison. The teen Prince nimbly dodged them, drawing out his shield and Forcepike. From both sides, he managed to block another attack from them. It surprised the Sith Lords; this kind of strength was impossible for a thirteen years old child!
Adrenaline rushed through Saxan’s veins, excited at the notion of becoming a hero, and a real combat at last.
“He’s just a kid! We’d better hurry!”
The prissy Sith attempted to disarm him, delivering a lightning-imbued kick to the side of his shield. It succeeded while the tall, gruffy Sith attacked with a flurry of Juyo strikes. Saxan was fast enough to dodge them, thanks to the absence of his shield. He kept the defensive against the tall Sith, then jumped back to attack the other.
But there’s only so long that a child could hold his own against two experienced Sith Lords. The Prince’s stamina faltered, and recklessness took its chance. The vain Sith Lord saw this opportunity and tripped him, while the other disarmed the Forcepike that Arcann forged for him.
What he saw was a crimson blade of light, just inches away from his eyes before passing out.
Aryuni felt the safest in Arcann’s arms. But he doubted; was he doing enough to ease her? Before he could speak, his dear wife voiced her concern.
“I know you have other things to take care of. I’ll be fine here.”
“My love, I needed a break from all of that. I could lose my kingdom and everything tomorrow, but not my family. Not this time...”
She smiled sadly, feeling warmth coursing through. Her delicate fingers caressed his scars, just as she’d usually do before kissing him. But their intimacy was interrupted by an incoming holocall.
“Your Majesty, permission to enter. I-I have a report!”
A lone Knight entered the throne room, his armor badly damaged. Arcann closed in on the injured Knight, but stopped cold by a lightsaber blade protruding from the Knight’s heart.
A man in a black armor and crimson accent pulled his blade away. Without a word, his offhand shoto went for the Emperor’s heart. Arcann’s fast reflex deflected the thrust. Utilizing Force Push, he shoved the assailant away, creating a safe distance from Aryuni.
“Get behind the throne!”
The duel continued with the assailant keeping a great pacing between each of his Ataru strikes, defensively parried and dodged by the Emperor. Arcann saw an opening and sliced the assailant’s right hand off, followed by a golden arc of lightning knocking him down.
“Uffh. To think of how easily you killed my Father in Korriban… she’d truly made you this weak, huh?”
Korriban. It happened a long time ago, when his conquest costed him an arm and Thexan loyally stood by his side.
Alas, the memory distracted him and Aryuni’s voice took a heartbeat away. Amidst her fear and shivering, she somehow managed to deflect a flying shoto with her Forcepike. The assailant was nearly successful in taking Arcann down when a fast moving figure bolted towards him.
The Empress delivered a killing blow to the man in black armor. Upon leaving her spot behind the throne, another dead body slumped down the platform. It was revealed that the assailant was not alone, and the accomplice in stealth failed to assassinate Aryuni. But that wasn’t what shocked the redeemed Emperor.
It was the ominous smile on her face, as if she was unmasking herself. What happened to the meek and innocent Empress?
To be continued...

Prompt idea - Deathstroke has kidnapped a wounded Dick Grayson. Batman and Dick's siblings come to the rescue. Points for some interesting introspection as Deathstroke tells bat family why he thinks Dick is the perfect son/protégé for him and manages to his some nerves.
This ended up being… very curious. Let’s see what you all make of it.
“Can’t this thing go any faster?” Batman, Bruce, chastises in a very rare loss of composure in the cowl. Tim shifts slightly in the seat beside him, he’s been the one who’s been toying with the jet to increase speed and efficiency so the comment really was directed at him.
“We’re going as fast as we can given the size and weight of the ship,” he responds lightly. “We’re going to get him back B, you know how tough Wing is.”
“That doesn’t mean I want to leave him in the hands of that lunatic for any longer than necessary,” Bruce grounds out turning to glare at his middle son. “You don’t understand what Deathstroke is capable of Tim, the Titans have only gotten a taste of what that man is capable of, and he’s had Dick for hours.” Even Tim, who’s well-practiced at the art of ignoring Batman’s glares, shrinks a bit under the force of this one.
“Alright, I know it’s good fun to beat up the kid but lighten up B.” Jason says from the back, giving Bruce’s chair a kick to stop his lecturing. “Besides, we all know that Slade is super in love with Dickie Bird and won’t touch a hair on his head, it’s been that way since I wore short pants.” Jay shrugged as we went back to lounging in the back seat, completely unworried. He bets by the time they get there, Dick will have already beaten Deathstroke and be waiting for pick-up.
“Nightwing took several bad hits before he was taken,” Damian interjects, about as edgy as Hood was calm. He’d been unable to stop his partner from being viciously beaten nor stop his kidnapping. If something happened to Grayson he would never forgive himself. “And it’s unwise to underestimate Deathstroke. Even my Grandfather holds him in high regard which goes to show how cunning and skilled he is. He must be if he gives Grayson such a difficult time.”
“It’ll be fine,” Tim concludes quietly, “Dick is tough and has handled Deathstroke before. Besides he has all of us there to back him up if need be.”
“Amen to that Little Red,” Hood says cheerfully. “And look at that, it seems we’re coming up on Wing’s location.” Batman takes over manual control of the plane, as the tracking device in Dick’s suit alerts them that they’re nearing their destination. He rolls in shoulders in preparation of, what he hopes, is a pretty awesome brawl.
“Oh man, what is going on down there?” Tim mutters quietly as he looks out the window. Immediately Dami looks out his while Hood unbuckles from his seat and crowds over Damian.
“What the hell?” Jason mutters as they fly over a deserted beach and see Deathstroke and Nightwing, sitting on the sand seemingly without care. “What are you doing Dick?” He asks to himself as B, observing their reactions, brings the plane down into a dive and lands in a rough, but still passable manner just a few hundred yards from where Dick and Deathstroke were sitting.
“Be prepared for anything,” Batman growls as he throws off his seatbelt and makes last second additions to his belt. “Deathstroke is known for his unpredictability but priority one is getting Nightwing out safely." He continues curtly before stalking off the plane, completely forgoing any attempt at stealth. Deathstroke was changing the rules, the usual techniques no longer applied.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Wayne,” Deathstroke says once the four Bats are in ear shot, “and Mr. Todd-Wayne, Mr. Drake-Wayne and the young Mr. Wayne as well. Lovely day out isn’t it?” Slade is methodically sharpening a collection of knives on the beach, not even in a threatening manner, just in a professional, casual way.
“What have you done to Nightwing?” Batman barks taking a few more steps closer but the knife Slade is sharpening comes up and the Bat halts. They stay that way for a moment before Slade goes back to his task.
“We’re just talking, nothing big, just normal stuff.” And true to form, Dick doesn’t look to be in any harm. The injuries from earlier appear to have been attended to, his belt and gloves are not on him but laid to the side about a foot away. Other than that, he’s just sitting there with a relaxed look on his face. “He was a bit of trouble when I was patching up his injuries so I gave him a muscle relaxant. He’s a little less chatty than normal but still perfectly aware of what’s going on.”
“Let him go Deathstroke, you’re through hurting him.” Robin spat out vicious, running forward to attack the assassin only to be stopped in his tracks by both Batman and Hood grabbing at his shoulders.
“Hurt him?” Deathstroke says innocently, “I would never dream of hurting him. Look at him boy, does he look hurt to you?” Damian’s face draws up into a sneer but the man continues. “Have I not treated his injuries? Brought him to a relaxing location to put his busy mind and body at ease? He’s not even bound, should he wish to leave, he could have done so at any time.” Through the black and orange mask, they could feel him smiling. “In fact, the ones who regularly hurt him have just interrupted our little chat.”
“You dirty liar,” Damian said, squirming and kicking but the elder Bats held on firm as much as they wanted to rush into the assassin. Whatever this was, it was new and they couldn’t just dive in and risk setting whatever trap Slade had set.
“Guys relax, it’s okay,” Dick said suddenly from his spot, still looking a bit dazed but there wasn’t any fear or anger in his tone. “We were just talking.”
“You see?” Deathstroke nodded, lightly gesturing to Dick with his knife. “We’ve been having a great conversation. Dick’s told me some stories from his time in the circus, we compared training regimes, I even shared with him one of my prized slow cooker recipes. Just guy talk.”
“The hell are you up to?” Hood demanded, debating if he should let the brat go at it so they could end whatever the hell was happening.
“I just decided to switch things up a bit, thank to you Timothy.” Slade said gently with a nod in the direction of Red Robin. “The Titans stole two of my children from me, when Rose finally betrayed me, the Robin at the time commented how they always turned because I never treated them with the love and respect they needed. I never gave them a reason to stay.”
“Rose and Joey left you because you were a manipulative, abusive asshole and talking recipes isn’t going to change that, or make Dick want to stay with you.” Red Robin said sternly, feeling a bit uncomfortable at the silent accusations coming from his team.
“Oh I agree. After all, what kind of father would take a young, vulnerable child who’s already suffered enough to last a lifetime and put them in a costume and throw them out into the rough, unrelenting world of capes and criminals.” Batman tensed up, “now that sounds pretty abusive to me, I think Dick agrees too.”
“You don’t-” Batman started before he was cut off.
“Of course if I’d treated Joey or Rose with more respect, allowed them to grow on their own instead of confining them to my side, forcing them to aid in my growth and progression while denying them their own, they might have stayed. They might not have run off to join the Teen Titans or anywhere really just to get away from their cruel, merciless father who can’t see beyond the mission.” Dick’s eyes narrow on Bruce as Deathstroke keeps talking and even the other Bats are side-eyeing their mentor. It’s one thing to live through it, another to have it stated so plainly.
“Maybe if Joey and Rose got on better it would have been different as well,” the assassin sighs. “I was an only child so I can’t imagine the heartache siblings would cause. Reckless younger brothers who refuse to listen, taking advantage of the older sibling’s good will and cheer and use and abuse him for their own purposes. No wonder the children left me.” There’s more wincing from the Bats and Deathstroke can only smile. That’s enough for one day, the seeds have been planted, not just in Grayson but all of them. He bets by the end of the year, Dick will be on the outs with his supposed family again and maybe, just maybe, might end up on his doorstep. He sets down the knife and begins packing up.
“Well it has been an illuminating talk but Dick here probably does need his rest and I’m sure you’re all tired from the rather bruising battle this morning. Why don’t you take him back home and we’ll fight it out again some other time?” He leaned over and patted Dick’s knee. “Time to go, your weapons are to your right. I’m sure your family will take the very best care of you, after all, they don’t want to follow my example now would they?” Deathstroke carefully got to his feet. “It’s been a pleasure as always, safe flight home.” And with that, he picked up the bag at his feet and began to walk away from the small, tense group.
Damian wriggled out of his captors’ grasp and ran over to his brother. He knelt down and gently patted the older man to assess for any unknown injuries. He was surprised and more than a little hurt when Dick brushed his hands aside.
“I’m fine,” the acrobat said, struggling to his feet. “The relaxant is wearing off, I can walk on my own.” He says in a quiet monotone, walking silently past Damian and the others to get back onto the plane.
“Dick,” Bruce said calmly, reaching out a hand to his oldest. “You know what he’s trying to do. He’s trying to put cracks in our infrastructure, to plant doubt and conflict in an attempt to draw you onto his side. You know he’s just saying those things to manipulate you.” Dick frowns and steps out of the reach of Bruce’s hand.
“Yeah, I know he is but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t bring up valid points. I just,” the man sighed, feeling far older than his 25 years. “I just need some time to think.” With that, he walked silently onto the plane and the Bats exchanged worried looks with one another. This was going to be a long, awkward flight back to Gotham.

Hitting Mans: The Art of the Kill in Hitman
Repetition is learning. To truly master something, people say you have to do it 10,000 times, quite the grind Games, though they are entertainment, are also about learning. Games teach the players how to play themselves. RPGs add powers and abilities as the characters grow in strength, platformers might give their protagonists new powers throughout the game, and almost every game ramps the difficulty up throughout its run. This means that good games have had to learn how to deliver their lessons without feeling like a boring, repetitive grind, and Hitman 2016 is a very good game.
Tumblr media
Agent 47 is a master assassin, capable of blending into a crowd, walking into a secure location, and eliminating a target without anyone noticing. Your average gamer is not that. Most of us fire up Hitman games with only a limited understanding of the environments and tools. The first kill on a Hitman map will probably be bumbling and awkward. How then, can we get the real Agent 47 experience? Hitman, answers that question with its episodic structure and its brilliant learning curve.
First, the structure. Each map in Hitman releases on its own, and can be purchased individually. The episodic model is not new to gaming, popularized mainly by Telltale’s adventure games, but Hitman does not simply use this structure as a business model. Instead it takes this structure and uses it to direct players to the kind of experience the game is meant to convey. Playing through each level once would make the game feel flat and uninteresting. As well designed as these maps are, just killing the targets is usually not that hard. With a bit of patience, and some observation, it is a simple matter to infiltrate to the targets and take them out. This is why the episodic structure works so well. Every map is chock full of options, challenges, unique kills, unique characters and outfits, hidden areas, and extra escalation targets to keep the player invested. Because each map stands on its own for a while, each map gives the player time to explore its every facet, and this is where the real challenge in Hitman lies: not in killing the targets, but in killing them with stealth and style. Only having one new map to work with at a time means that players have to dive back into the same map multiple times if they want to keep playing Hitman. In some games, this would feel like needless padding, but repetition is learning, and learning is core to the Hitman experience.
Tumblr media
It would have been easy for IO Interactive to simply offer up their intricate maps and then leave the player out in the cold on how best to approach them. Instead, they have designed a layered structure of missions and challenges that allow the player to ramp up to map mastery without feeling frustrated or bogged down. The first step to learning the map is playing it for the first time. The player is let loose on the world for their first attempt at the hit, and will pretty quickly start noticing Opportunities pop up. Opportunities are a controversial mechanic, but one that I think the game is better for. They act as waypoints through the level, highlighting possible paths to the targets. Each Opportunity can be found by finding intel in the world, or by overhearing a conversation. When an Opportunity is discovered, it pops up a short description on screen, and sets a waypoint to the next step. This is where the controversy lies: some fans of the series believe that Opportunities make the game too easy.  If the whole game simply involved following waypoints, I would agree; however, Opportunities are just the jumping off point for each map. They might hold the player’s hand through the first kill on the map, but, this is important, the first kill does not matter.
The first time the player enters a map in Hitman, they will know nothing about it, and these maps can get confusing: twisting corridors, crowds of people, hidden rooms, secret characters. There is way too much to learn to tackle a map just by wandering around. What Opportunities do is guide the player through a kill or two. While following Opportunities, the player gets a guided tour of the map, and gets to discover some secrets that they would otherwise not know about. As the player continues to return to the same map, the Opportunities become less and less useful. Most of the assassination challenges do not have an Opportunity pointing right to them. Instead, Opportunities will allow a player to start a map off with a strong sense of where certain tools, characters, and paths are. This framework will allow the player to build up to the higher level challenges that await them on each map. The final, and one of the most important pieces of Opportunities is that the player only needs to find them once. Once they are discovered, they will be logged on the pause screen in every subsequent playthrough. Opportunities will let you know if you have missed your chance, and can remind a player of the tools they might need on a later run. Plus, this cuts down the monotony of having to listen to conversations on multiple runs to get the same Opportunity to reveal itself.
Once the player has explored the easy to find Opportunities available to a map, they will probably start to look at the Challenges. Challenges grant map experience to the player upon completion, map experience builds into map levels, and map levels offer rewards such as new guns, gear, starting locations, and smuggled item locations. This means that leveling up a map is imperative in order to complete certain Challenges, and completing Challenges is how the player levels up the map. This creates a feedback loop: the player wants to complete Challenges to level up their map so that they can complete more difficult Challenges. At this point, the Opportunities no longer apply, and the player will be applying the knowledge that they already have of the map to complete these more difficult tasks.
Tumblr media
While the Challenges can take the player to some of the more odd corners of the map, some areas still do not have all that much to them. The second floor in Paris, for instance, is not a place most players will be drawn to in the course of taking out Dalia and Viktor. This is where Escalation Missions come into play. Escalations are missions that task the player with taking out a new target under certain restrictions. Every time the player completes an Escalation it ranks up and adds some new requirements. The Videl Cataclysm Escalation in Paris places its first target up on the second floor, suddenly giving the player a reason to learn that area. As the Escalation levels up, it adds a second target to the floor, as well as adding the requirement to wear certain outfits. Suddenly, the player needs to know not only where to take these targets out, but also where to acquire the outfits needed to take them down.. Because of this Escalation, I found the ladder up to the third floor in Paris that has become my go to means for reaching that floor with a firearm, and allowed me to complete the Silent Assassin, Suit Only Challenge. Escalations act as both different content, and a test of skill and map awareness that allows the player to interact with objects and characters they would never meet in the course of completing the regular Challenges.
What then, does all this map knowledge translate into. Some of the more difficult Challenges require intense map knowledge, and they are a lot of fun to complete. Taking out the targets on each map without anyone noticing and while only in 47’s classic suit is a great test of knowledge, and there are others on each map that are harder than that. Some of the high level Escalations also get pretty challenging, but nothing compares to Elusive Targets for rewarding map knowledge. Elusive Targets are one time only targets that can be taken on for a window of a few days, before disappearing forever. On top of this, Elusive Targets can only be attempted once. Dying or assassinating the target removes the contract forever. And these are not just random NPCs already on the map. Elusive Targets are new NPCs, with a full introductory cut scene and their own place on the map. This makes them a hugely high stakes contract, and most Elusive Targets are tricky figures to take out, flanked by guards or frequenting populated areas. Having a thorough understanding of a map means that the player can stalk and eliminate these targets without getting spotted and killed. Elusive Targets are the “final bosses” of Hitman. They represent a test that will challenge all of the player’s understanding and preparedness. By offering the player a route to that map mastery, Hitman keeps players engaged and ready to tackle the most challenging assassination contracts.

Now, as a side note, Elusive Targets present something of a conundrum for me. The folks at IO Interactive have stated that these targets will remain one time affairs, but a lot of unique content has gone into these missions, and it would be a shame for it to all disappear forever. Moreover, if the Elusive Targets do eventually fade away when support for Hitman dries up, that will do some damage to the flow that the folks at IO have built for the game. Without the “final boss” encounters of the Elusive Targets, the map knowledge required in Hitman drops considerably. As much fun as finding all of the hidden ways to eliminate the standard targets is, the Elusive Targets present the truest test of the player’s man hitting skills. I hope that when Hitman does eventually stop getting supported, or perhaps when Season 2 wraps up, the folks at IO start putting some old Elusive Targets on rotation. Keep them timed, one attempt affairs, but have them repeat on a semi-random schedule. That way, players will still be tested by these contracts, but will have more than one chance to approach them. Come on IO, I really want to do that Gary Busey assassination.
