IT IS A RARE SIGHT, the physicist without her counterpart, and for a moment elizabeth looks around in confusion for robert’s telltale shock of short red hair.  but no matter. there are more important things to attend to. she’s bent over a copy of rosalind’s quantum physics textbook that has been loved nearly to shreds, annotations and dog-ears and bookmarks from study joined by little drawings elizabeth did in the margins as a child.  it’s one of the few things she owns that hasn’t been cycled through tears, and somehow ended up in her possession even after falling to her near-death from the tower. elizabeth greets her with a distracted smile, eyes caught in the throes of deep thought. ❝ madame lutece! good afternoon. ❞ a moment of hesitation, then, doubt creeping in before curiosity steamrolls it completely flat ( as so often happens to insatiable minds. )     ❝ pardon me, but is it rude to pester an author about her own work? i’ve been wondering about something in this chapter. ❞

FREEDOM WASN’T SUPPOSED to be this complicated. elizabeth curls up on a bench while booker scrounges in the bins nearby – she’s stopped scolding him, for all the good it does – and speaks to her shadow like a madwoman. if only they understood what a kind presence it harbors. ❝ i just ... want to get to paris. a-and then we can just be shut of all this, like mr. dewitt says. ❞

THE AIR STILL SHIMMERS with the remnants of the siren, her undead soldiers scattered across the lawn in front of comstock house. elizabeth picks her way across the corpses to stand at booker’s side. the anger roiling within her has not quelled, but she knows her companion needs rest; he is wounded, and weary, and he just fought a small army of men in one sitting.
