George Floyd: Thousands protest against racism in Washington DC
Tumblr media

Media caption“Fifty plus years later we’re still dealing with the same thing”
Tens of thousands are marching against racism and police brutality in Washington DC, as protests sparked by George Floyd’s death enter a 12th day.
Crowds gathered near the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and Lafayette Park, where security forces blocked any approach to the nearby White House.
Meanwhile, people paid their respects to Mr Floyd in North Carolina, where he was born, before a memorial service.
Large anti-racism rallies also took place in a number of other countries.
In the UK, Parliament Square in central London was filled with people supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, despite calls by the government to avoid mass gatherings for fear of spreading the coronavirus.
In Australia, there were major protests in the cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane that focused on the treatment of indigenous Australians.
Mr Floyd, an unarmed black man, died in police custody in Minneapolis on 25 May. Video footage showed a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes while he is pinned to the floor.
Mr Chauvin has been dismissed and charged with murder. Three other officers who were on the scene have also been sacked and charged with aiding and abetting.
What is happening in Washington DC?
Tens of thousands of protesters, many of them carrying placards saying “Black Lives Matter”, gathered peacefully outside Lafayette Park, near the White House, at the newly renamed Black Lives Matter Plaza.
Mayor Muriel Bowser welcomed people, saying the crowds in the capital had sent a message to President Donald Trump. On Monday, federal law enforcement officers fired tear gas to clear a protest in the area ahead of a visit to a church by the president.

“If he can take over Washington DC, he can come for any state, and none of us will be safe,” she said. “So today, we pushed the army away from our city.”
Ms Bowser has requested the withdrawal of all federal law enforcement officers and National Guard troops from the city, saying their presence is “unnecessary”.
“Our soldiers should not be treated that way, they should not be asked to move on American citizens. Today, we say ‘no’; in November, we say ‘next’.”

Image caption Demonstrators in Washington DC said they would not stop pushing for change
A 35-year-protester, Eric Wood, told the BBC: “I’m here because I really couldn’t afford not to be here. Racism has long been a part of the US.”
Crystal Ballinger, 46, said she felt hopeful about the movement this time. “I feel something different about this protest… I’m hopeful that the message of solidarity and equality is getting out.”
‘We’re just getting started’
By Helier Cheung, BBC News, Washington
The crowd was diverse with people of different ethnicities, and families with children – and there was an upbeat, if determined, mood. Music was being played and food, water and hand sanitiser handed out, as protesters chant “George Floyd”, “Breonna Taylor”, and “No justice, no peace”.
Image caption Sarina and Grace Lecroy were among the crowd at Lafayette Park, near the White House
The protest’s movements appeared quite spontaneous – at one point, demonstrators did an impromptu march through the streets, walking down Pennsylvania Avenue before looping back towards the White House. At another point, the entire street of demonstrators dropped on one knee at the same time, in a mark of solidarity.
Sisters Sarina Lecroy, 20, and Grace Lecroy, 16, said they were protesting for the first time, and that they believed the extent of the public outrage and the nationwide nature of these protests could lead to police reforms.
“We’re just getting started this time, but it [the movement] does feel much more collective than in the past,” said Sarina.
Many placards also reflected the growing debate about how white people should help the cause. One placard held by a demonstrator read: “I may never understand, but I will stand with you.”
More on George Floyd’s death
What’s happening elsewhere in the US?
Hundreds of people paid their respects to Mr Floyd in Raeford, North Carolina, laying flowers at a public viewing of his body in a church near where he was born.
A private memorial service was then held for members of his family. Governor Roy Cooper ordered that flags be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Saturday in Mr Floyd’s honour.

In the city of Buffalo, New York, two police officers were charged with second-degree assault after they were filmed shoving a 75-year-old protester, who remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. The officers pleaded not guilty and were released without bail.
On Friday, the Minneapolis City Council and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights agreed to ban police neck restraints and chokeholds.
Seattle’s mayor banned the use by police of CS gas against protesters, and a federal judge in Denver ordered police to stop the use of tear gas, plastic bullets and other non-lethal force.
Meanwhile, the National Football League reversed its policy on protests against racial injustice by players during the national anthem.
What do protesters want?
An end to police brutality is undoubtedly at the forefront of protests nationwide.
But it is not the only concern. Repeated incidents of police brutality may have become the flashpoint, but issues with law enforcement are emblematic of the wider problem of systemic racism and inequality.

Media captionWatch: ‘I remember George Floyd as me’
On social media and on the streets, those in support of the movement have called on elected officials to address these longstanding inequalities, from law enforcement to mass incarceration to healthcare.
Black Americans are jailed at five times the rate of white Americans and sentenced for drug offences six times more, often despite equal rates of drug use, according to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Black mothers die in childbirth at over twice the rate of white mothers, according to national health data. Decades of government-sanctioned segregation have also seen inequalities across school systems, housing and other public resources.

Media captionThe US’s history of racial inequality has paved the way for modern day police brutality
A 2019 Pew Research Center study found more than eight-in-10 black adults say the legacy of slavery still affects black Americans’ position today. Half say it is unlikely America will ever see true racial equality.
As demonstrator Kyla Berges told BBC Minute: “The system has failed me for 300 plus years, so what do I have to do to make it change?”

President Trump blames the violence on a lack of leadership in Minneapolis and threatens to send in the National Guard in a tweet.  He follows it up in a second tweet with a warning “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”. The second tweet is hidden by Twitter for “glorifying violence”.

Violence spreads across the US on the sixth night of protests. A total of at least five people are reported killed in protests from Indianapolis to Chicago. More than 75 cities have seen protests. At least 4,400 people have been arrested.  Curfews are imposed across the US to try to stem the unrest.

President Trump threatens to send in the military to quell growing civil unrest. He says if cities and states fail to control the protests and “defend their residents” he will deploy the army and “quickly solve the problem for them”. Mr Trump poses in front of a damaged church shortly after police used tear gas to disperse peaceful protesters nearby.

so literally 0 people asked but here are valentine dates with all the different trash goblins:
mr. memphis: go for a real nice real fancy meaty dinner. it’s so hard to get reservations and somehow he managed. memphis offers you a nice expensive piece of jewellery, diamonds maybe, did he buy them? not exactly. have a couple of drinks afterwards, okay maybe 20 drinks, dash without paying, giggling all the way, but not without vandalising or inflicting some serious property damage on whatever fancy establishment you two just stole from. set fire to some trash, maybe a church if he’s feeling naughty. he talks dirty to you throughout 99.9% of the night but it’s not sexy. it’s kinda creepy. actually he might just be numbering all the literal dirty things he knows of. but at least he pays for your uber in exchange for your autograph without getting handsy. what a gentleman.
the woodsman: it’s not a date. has he told you that it’s NOT a date? doesn’t matter. he looks pissed off, is constantly teasing you and seems like he might have had a few before you showed up. you go on a walk through some national park but he’s NOT paying for dinner. woody only stops making fun of your dumb hair and your dumb perfume when he spots a baby deer with its neck stuck on a fence. he helps the animal free and you both watch it run back to its’ mama. woody’s beard looks reddish in the sunlight. he finds some dumb flower that reminds him of you. he tosses it at you, catch it. or don’t. whatever, he doesn’t care, shut up, you both go home before the sun sets, this was a terrible idea anyways.
hannibal lecter: remember that one kid who kicked a stray cat when you were little and how that was the first time you learned about how cruel and senseless the world could be? well, hannibal does. he’s such a good listener he always remembers everything you tell him. hannibal really does pay attention. and even though he can’t really physically comfort you, he hopes that his words can, at the very least, guide you through the darkness. he wants you to prosper and he wants you to know that, despite the violence, there’s also a lot of beauty in the world. anyway, that kid is dead, his remains are scattered across a deserted area, here’s a map, here’s some cryptic one-liners, p.s.- if you look down at the area from an helicopter, the loose limbs draw a heart (aw).
rustin cohle: he doesn’t believe in valentine’s day. he sees it as an excuse for (especially) men to liberate themselves from all romantic obligations or accusations of thoughtlessness. rust doesn’t see how a relationship can survive if the only time love is set on the table is on some day in february. he’ll make you a cup of coffee though. maybe sit on the porch with you while you tell him about ex-lovers. probably chain smoke but only as a way to fight the temptation of sharing. in between all of the depressive shit he says, rust pulls a sometimes love is not a ring or chocolates, sometimes love is comfort. you both sit quietly and watch the sunset.
shadow moon: you grab some hot coco during the day and shadow’s cup is overflowing with marshmallows. he scoops some of them with his spoon and places them in your coco. he says he doesn’t want you to starve. he’s also not very funny. but he does show you a few coin tricks and they’re actually pretty good. he’s not the most talkative but every time you laugh he smiles. he gives you a pair of gloves he bought an old lady during one of his interstate trips. the woman told him they were from the old country though he’s not sure which old country. the wool has bright colours. shadow realises he has to leave earlier than he was supposed to. he looks stressed as he runs out the back door. he never calls back.
hellboy: he forgot it’s v-day. but don’t worry he can fix it! he’s bought a pack of beers and stole two cuban cigars which he’ll smoke all by himself. but hey, he carries you up to some empty rooftop late at night and you do some people watching. maybe even make a game out of it. he’s childish, challenges you to arm wrestle with his big stone hand but hellboy (quite obviously) lets you win. later in the night he says sorry for forgetting and that he’ll make it up to you some other time. you’re about to tell him something but he shushes you and points at a shooting star. you're surprised by how similar your wishes are.
black phillip: he got you out into the woods. you don’t remember how. the sun is vanishing quickly and he doesn’t speak. it’s valentine’s day and he takes you out to meet all of his girl friends. they’re dancing around a bonfire. most of them are naked. bp whispers that you’re different, you’re not like other girls. he sounds shifty but he promised you so much. and he really does sound like someone who keeps their promises. his friends are weird. it’s hard to get alone time with bp tho. besides he keeps making goat noises idk i’d ditch him if i were you bestie.

know that if your character ever does anything dangerous, criminal or just generally shitty, they can count on the support of mr. memphis. he’s really the type of guy who’ll stand behind you going “you gonna let them talk to you like that?” and keep instigating without ever actually getting involved. shrugging after someone committed manslaughter and going “eh it was bound to happen eventually. let’s go get a beer”. if a character is out there living wrong AT THE VERY LEAST they can count on memphis’ support.

also i saw a quote saying “he held her face in his hands ‘Do you think I care about anything but you?’” but my lizard brain read it as “he held her face in his hands ‘Do you think I care about anything about you?’” and if that is not a mr. memphis vibe idk what is.

thinking about how mr. memphis will mostly flirt ( sometimes rather crassly ) when he knows it’ll push people’s buttons. thinking about how he finds more pleasure in people’s anger than through any loving gesture. he feels more attracted to people who show him hatred or despair than to those who actually reciprocate his advances. thinking about how making love is never a goal or something he looks forward to. his desires are always attached to negative emotions. memphis stalks and preys upon those who are desperate, lost or furious at the world. he cares not for softness and finds love nauseating.
thinking about he doesn’t care about anyone’s figure or how pretty they are. he is a creature from the bottomless pit, whatever beauty humanity has to offer never truly touches him. the most beautiful person in the world is as important to him as the most beautiful ant in the world. mr. memphis is only truly left breathless when faced with horror, with monstrous beings that inflict panic upon humans’ hearts. beasts which are 50 feet tall and capable of destroying whole cities, storms which sink ships...
memphis might do his little dance and make lewd remarks at both women and men, but his small shrivelled heart belongs to all that which hurts and maims.

you hear this horrible sound and walk in to find mr. memphis, leaning back in a nice warm bubble bath, relaxing after a long day of work, two slices of cucumber on both of his eyes, he has candles lit up, maybe a bit of incense, everything is nice and calm and zen, he’s got a mimosa in his hand, he is listening to his playlist, it’s called “tunes to chillax to”, he is having a grand old time
[ warning: lower your volume ]

mr. memphis particularly despises nuns because he sees women as creatures who are closer to nature and the occult than men ( also probably why , despite not really having a sexuality and just indulging in whatever sins he can , memphis usually gravitates more towards women ) . they are influenced by the moon, crave for the taste of dirt while pregnant, they hurt and bleed while men start wars and fights to fill that void. women are in synch with mother nature. women hold mysteries and secrets that are theirs to keep. memphis admires women because they hold a power within themselves that isn’t dependent on god.
and then you have them nuns. women who abdicate all of their power to serve a god who was not made for them...women who suddenly do not know what they are capable of. worse yet, they do know but choose to give it all up for his lord almighty. MEMPHIS HATES NUNS BECAUSE HE CAN’T UNDERSTAND THEIR CHOICES. and because you know......they can hurt him better and he doesn’t know how to tempt them.

misc. headcanons on MR. MEMPHIS that no one asked for;
he is left-handed.
house pets are usually very antagonistic towards him, perhaps because they can sense that he’s a bad omen. once he got jumped by seven cats while trying to swindle a senior citizen (he’ll tell you he nearly lost both of his eyes). he will hiss, toss things and even kick the animals when the owners aren’t looking. do not leave your pets alone with memphis. unless they’re rats or snakes or the like. he sympathises with those.
mr. memphis loves apple flavoured things. and he LOVES apple pie. if it’s sugary and has apple in it, he wants it.
he has a distinct and very strong smell of car air freshener mixed with a pungent cologne and tobacco (maybe an attempt to disguise the stench of sulfur which clings to the fibres of his suit to this day).
memphis smokes a lot. a lot. sometimes he even breathes smoke without ever lightening his cigarette.
no one can tell for sure...but, sometimes, mr. memphis’ tongue looks suspiciously long. not inhumanly long but...you know...pretty long.
memphis seems to become visibly agitated and angry every time people mention nuns. he despises nuns more than any other religious figure. do not get him started on those nuns.
his right hand is hard to ignore. though it was burned a long time ago, it still looks painful. it’s a deep shade of red, the skin is lumpy and twisted there and it glistens from time to time, suggesting pus or, at the very least, some sort of moistness.
