Rewatched the 1930 Talkartoon, Swing You Sinners! just now and I still like it! Still enjoyable, unrestrained, and just neat! A maverick that all can enjoy.
The cartoon does have a racial connotation to it and some stereotyping and the main conflict of the toon that starts it all (Bimbo wanting some food) truly worked when the cartoon first premiered to theaters but it is still a pretty nice cartoon all things considered. The animation is varied, given that at the time, Grim Natwick was training various inbetweeners (like Shamus Culhane, Willard Bowsky, & Inbetween dpt head William Henning amongst others) to animate after the four key Fleischer animators left for greener and not so greener pastures midway through production of the short. Natwick’s animation in the short is pretty rubbery and straight-ahead, which gives the toon and others he animated on it a unique feel since Fleischer was primarily a studio that, while inventing the process itself as we know it, adapted the system of inbetweening. The story is simple but it’s the overall gag after gag nature and the macabre but interesting tone that makes it all the worthwhile! The music is also pretty jazzy and really sets the mood for the cartoon pretty well, Swing, Swing, Swing indeed!
Overall, the cartoon is pretty enjoyable. It’s not “surreal” or anything of the sorts. Just an enjoyable romp. And remember ya’ll, don’t steal a chicken or do anything Bimbo done or else you’ll be devoured by a skeleton xD. I rate it a 10/10! One of Fleischer’s best!!!

I headcanon that dilf!sylus enjoys going to jazz bars to unwind. He likes to bar hop until he finds the perfect one that has the right ambiance, alcohol, and hosts good artists. He prefers it if the bar feels old-timey, with red velvet booths, brass rimmed art fixtures, retro posters, and vintage cocktail glasses. Once he finds his favorite he will frequent the place when his time allows. He likes to find a seat somewhere in the back since he likes to have the whole bar in view and will nurse on a gin fizz throughout the night. If he's feeling adventurous he might try a negroni or a sazerac but only if he's in a good mood. He's always had an appreciation for good music and wants to find local artists to support. A few of his favorite well known classic artists are Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, and Wes Montgomery and has vinyl records of each >.< 🥃
Nonnie ima keep it a buck with u, i dont know anything about those drinks u listed or those artists... But! i went on a lil dive and listened to their songs! and i like what i heard 💯
but also YES YES YES to everything you said! the fact that sylus is into vinyls and has that sexy classy, slow jazzy vibe iykwim makes my heart do a backflip 😮💨 he loves the back booths because they offer a whole panorama of the joint (who enters and exits, mainly; he likes the dark corner for the reason that he doesn’t have to worry about anyone sneaking up from behind- but the free entertainment is a plus, too). but he especially loves them because they give a clear view of his favorite, very pretty bar-goer…. enter MC
bonus points if she’s one of the singers who drops by to perform one evening. at first glance, seemingly just another average, probably struggling-to-make-it-by artist (judging by her get-up, she’s pretty, don’t get him wrong- but her dress isn’t anything fancy). she’s gorgeous and a little awkward as she taps the mic and leans in, offering a tight, wide smile before the lights dim overhead. he raises a brow at her appearance alone. she’s a cute little thing. but then she opens her mouth, her band guy helping the tune along as he stands off to the side of her, and then it’s her voice that captivates him entirely. that mysterious, somewhat clumsy but talented performer books a permanent room in sylus’s brain, but she’s gone in a flash— & then he’s just silently hoping she’ll do another show the next weekend he’s there to unwind.
ahem. but if fate is not so generous to him, he might have to force its hand by jumping to ends he might not’ve wanted to…. stalking, for example, or asking (more like hounding) every person in the bar for her name and where to find her.
if she’s on the road… well, he might have to give chase 👀
#mailbox#sorry i cant shut up to save my life sometimes#i really like this tho nonnie 💗👀#U captured his vibes perfectly RGGHHHHH#please 😣#my immediate mental image is just of him in the shaded back of the bar#with his leg crossed over the other as he languidly nurses from his glass#completely at his leisure#his light stubble is stubbling and his wrist watch is DRIPPING#(dilf swagger 😣)#and then he raises a subtle brow when Y/N shyly walks onto the small stage#lowers his glass#as she performs- he gradually leans more and more forward in his booth and then for once he’s quietly regretting being so far from the fron#t#the nameless woman who is perhaps the love of his life (as of tonight) is so close yet so far#ALRIGHT i’m off this hoe 🙅♀️#u got my brain showing a lil bit of function tho with this one 😮💨#goodness gracious me imagine he finally finds her stage name and buys all her merch CDs etc#follows her rinky dink little traveling band bus in his unfathomably expensive car wherever the hell she goes#her bandmate tosses growingly concerned looks into the rearview mirror before adjusting it#prolly makes some wry joke to play off his unease as mc hums absently in the passenger seat#‘Somebody needs to get their pops because why the HELL does this sophisticated 40 year old man look like he’s following us??’

I think Dave Van Ronk's Brechtian reading of "Mack the Knife" is the definitive recording of it. I've never understood the various pop versions, tho' I suppose making a harsh, edgy song about a fly-by-night rapist and murderer into a jazzy pop ballad is a good example of Brecht's theory of alienation?

Hamilton, but with Muppets
Hey all! One of my favorite hobbies as of late is casting movies and shows I like with Muppets. I thought that there would be some people here who'd appreciate that, so here is my cast of Hamilton, but with Muppets! (Explanations will be below the list)
Hamilton: Walter
Burr: Fozzie Bear
Laurens: Gonzo the Great
Phillip: Rizzo the Rat
Lafayette: Pepé the King Prawn
Jefferson: Dr. Teeth
Mulligan: Sweetums
Madison: Scooter
Angelica: Janice
Eliza: Celebrity Guest, Lin-Manuel Miranda
Peggy: Miss Piggy
Maria Reynolds: Camilla the Chicken
King George: Swedish Chef
Samuel Seabury: Sam the Eagle
Charles Lee: Link Hogthrob
James Reynolds: Rowlf the Dog
George Eacker: Crazy Harry
The Bullet: Animal
Those two guys in Non-Stop: Statler and Waldorf
Explanation Below
I'll address the elephant in the room first. I know Kermit is the obvious pick for any leading man, but I think he fits George Washington so much better. Kermit is consistently a source of wisdom and guidance for the other Muppets. Along with this, it allows fresher faces like Walter to step to the forefront, which is kind of what Hamilton is all about. Hamilton wasn't the name people first thought of when you think of the American Revolution, similar to Walter and the Muppets, but now they are rising through the ranks to become the faces of their "brands." I also made Burr as Fozzie because of his friendship with Walter. They start friends, but in a more cynical muppet universe, I can totally see Fozzie growing jealous of the attention Walter gets from Kermit, like Burr getting jealous of Hamilton and Washington. Also just because Fozzie is just kinda easy to empathize with like Burr.
Next, I decided to separate the shared roles to include more Muppets because while human actors may be Jack's of all trades, Muppets are "Masters of One," and I wanted to capitalize on their individual talents. Laurens is Gonzo because they both take a tremendous amount of pride in their aspirations and will do anything to see them through. Lafayette is Pepé because they are both fast talkers with a lot of charisma. Hercules Mulligan is Sweetums due to the gruffer voices and also because Sweetums' physicality allows for the high energy performance that Mulligan requires.
For the Act 2 characters, I picked Rizzo for Phillip because he's obviously a lot smaller than the other Muppets, but I feel like he could also portray both of Phillip's ages. This is unlike Robin, who was also a contender because a) He's a child, and b) he's a frog, and Washington is a frog, so that just didn't make sense in my head. Jefferson is Dr. Teeth because I feel like Dr. Teeth can capture the bouncy movement that Daveed Diggs brought to the role. Also, Dr. Teeth has a jazzy quality to his vocals that would work in What'd I Miss, and also I can totally believe that Dr. Teeth would be "off getting high with the French" if you get what I mean. Scooter would be James Madison because he does the quiet nerdy guy role really well, and also because Madison helps orchestrate Jefferson's campaign, and Scooter is the stage manager for the Muppet Show, so I feel like that experience would translate into the role.
I had a hard time with the lady characters because, believe it or not, Muppet-ing is quite the male dominated field (jk). This is another controversial choice because Miss Piggy has undeniable talent and would excel in every role she is put in, however, sometimes you just need to cast for comedy. Miss Piggy saying "and Piggy" instead of "and Peggy" is far too funny to me, and I think her being mildly disgruntled the whole time would be a really funny bit. Janice as Angelica was definitely a product of necessity, but that's not to say that she wouldn't also do amazing. I chose Camilla for Maria Reynolds also just for the bit. Having Hamilton getting seduced by a chicken is just such a funny image, and I feel like playing the song for comedy would remove the discomfort on the audience's part (also it would keep up the tradition of having Maria Reynolds and Laurens' actors being in a relationship lol). Lastly, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Eliza is controversial, but if I've learned two things as a Muppet fan, it's that there has to be a human celebrity guest, and they have to be the butt of every joke. So, here we stand. And yes Lin will still have the beard, and yes he will wear a dress, and yes he will sing everything in the original octave.
The rest of the casting was also just the result of me going "You know what would be funny?" and committing to that decision. This applies to King George, the Bullet, and the guys in Non-Stop. Sam the Eagle as Samuel Seabury may be controversial because he's a true patriot, but I think that Farmer Refuted sounds like it was written in his voice, so this casting would just work. Charles Lee is Link Hogthrob because both are victims of their unfortunately sized egos, George Eacker is Crazy Harry because who else would shoot early in a duel unless they were just really excited about the boom noise, and Rowlf is James Reynolds because it feels wrong to cast any of the Muppets as an abusive husband, so I feel like it's better to just play him as a carefree himbo who doesn't mind sharing his wife, in which case Rowlf is perfect.
Anyways, this is my Muppet casting of Hamilton! Please share your thoughts (but please be nice!), and if you have ideas for something I should cast the Muppets in, lmk! Thanks for reading!!

Tag Game: Top 10 Albums
tagged by @corpocyborg :3 tagging @fly-amanitaa @streetkid-named-desire, @totentnz and @theviridianbunny (no pressure of course)
Rules: List your top 10 favorite albums, and (if you want) include a brief description for why each one made it onto the list. Then, tag 10 (or however many you want, really) others to do the same.
#1 - Sunset Tree: The Mountain Goats
The album that got me through the part of college where I lived in dark places- home to the well-known This Year which gets many people through the dark days of January, and the less-appreciated Broom People which never fails to catch me by the throat. Try hard to do your best- the Magpie comes at noon. Heartbreak and defiance all the way through.
#2 - Salt for Salt: Brown Bird
The next in a line of bitter, rebellious albums. Folk is at its best when it flirts with blasphemy, anger, and cynical acceptance. The middle-eastern influence on their music always draws me back to Brown Bird in general but this album is my favorite by far from the languid bleak Chairkickers to the hypnotic instrumental of Shiloh which is etched into my brain. RIP Dave Lamb.
#3 - A Southern Gothic: Adia Victoria
Found this album on a random Bandcamp Friday and have been reaping the rewards since. Adia has a voice that is both powerful and deliciously soft, and I never get tired of listening to her. Mean-Hearted Woman is my favorite for giving me the shivers when she sings so prettily of revenge but My Oh My is close behind for the haunting loss.
#4 - Rock Bottom Rhapsody: Pokey LaFarge
Pathetic masculine romantic is a weakness of mine and this album delivers. Swingy, jazzy, blues-y all the way through, with that bit of self-aware but sincere longing. End of My Rope was my introduction to the cheerful celebration of being Utterly Fucked, but Fuck Me Up has a soft place in my heart whenever I lose the ability to give a shit and also to remember fondly of that time I went drinking in Chicago.
#5 - Helplessness Blues: Fleet Foxes
The Fleet Foxes have a special place in my heart for introducing me to indie folk and influencing my tastes for the next decade. Helplessness Blues is one of my comfort albums that I like to play on repeat when I feel like shit. Battery Kinzie is my favorite but the eponymous Helplessness Blues is also one I sing frequently to myself. Also hilariously, the second funniest song I have ever heard on a pre-tourney playlist. Mad-Dog ya weirdo that is the opposite of a warm-up song.
#6 - The Art of Drowning: AFI
One of three albums on this list I learned of from my sister, and dear to me for the time in which she burned it for me. This album is inextricably linked to Metroid Prime to me, which I would play while this was playing on my translucent blue boombox. I used to quote the lyrics from these songs to my friends on Yahoo Messenger and put in my Gaia signature, just to date the period. If I need to sell AFI to you I won't try.
#7 - The Relationship of Command - At the Drive-In
The second album my sister burned for me when she went to college. One of those nostalgic albums that's stuck with me, and okay not to get pretentious or weird but the first time I realized art could be hard and weird and good because of that. Invalid Litter Dept. remains the best and most heartbreaking song on the album.
#8 - Polka's Not Dead: The Dreadnoughts
My third sister album. The Dreadnought's energy always fills me with delight, and I am normally an autistic hater of loud live music and venues but I'd love to hear this guys playing in a bar some day even though it'll probably never happen. Most of their songs are fun to sing along with (especially when tipsy) but I personally enjoy Poutine and Sleep is for the Weak.
#9 - With Teeth: NIN
Got a soft spot for NIN in general, but With Teeth is probably my favorite album with a lot of strong songs in general, but most importantly with my favorite pair of soft NIN songs at the end: Beside You in Time and Right Where it Belongs, which as with all NIN songs are perfect for silverv.
#10 - It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All A Dream! It's Alright!: mewithoutyou
If you've made it this far, congrats, here is where I say that I actually liked some of the music my christian church band leader shared with me when I was in highschool. mewithoutyou definitely has religious tones but does not suffer from the praise jesus fever so I love them for their eclectic tone and songs about parables. The Angel of Death Came to David's Room and The King Beetle On a Coconut Estate are my personal favorites, although it feels wrong to not then round that out with The Fox, The Crow, and the Cookie.

Legend has it that this week in 1964, Ray Davies sat down at the piano the the Davies family home and began working on what would become 'You Really Got Me'. Ray originally imagined a jazzy number, inspired by his love of jazz great Gerry Mulligan, but Dave reinterpreted the line meant for saxophone on the fuzz guitar. The rest is history.

Bearsville Theater, Bearsville, NY, 10/27/24
If the prevailing emotion underpinning last night’s show was sad, tonight’s was definitely mad. That turned out to be a good thing for all concerned. Amanda released a good deal of anger in a productive fashion, and the crowd was treated to a high-octane performance for the ages.
There were shenanigans — particularly during Missed Me — the set list was shredded (always the hallmark of a great Dresden Dolls performance), and the songs were not so much performed as exorcised with face-melting intensity. If these shows were meant as a warm-up for their triumphant return to Boston next weekend I would say they are ready!
After the show Amanda somewhat sheepishly admitted that they had simply forgotten to do Coin-Operated Boy. It was on the set list; they just forgot to do it. She marveled that they could do a show that awesome without even playing their most popular song. “We’re not a one-hit wonder,” she concluded. I gave her a big hug and commiserated about her ongoing … family crisis, is how I believe she put it to Rey. “I wish there were something I could do to help,” I told her. “You’re doing it,” she replied. A number of us retired to a cabin in the woods for a bonfire to reflect on what we’d just witnessed. I went around the fire and asked each person what their favorite song had been and why. I was expecting some consensus, but everyone selected a different song - no two were the same! And the reasons given were all valid and strong; there was no “Aw c’mon you must be joking!” That’s how good a show it was.
Annotated Set List:
Good Day
Backstabber
Sex Changes
Gravity
My Alcoholic Friends
Missed Me Whenever Brian leaves his drum set during Missed Me you know shenanigans are afoot. He started out on all fours fetching a drumstick, and things just got weirder from there “Brian Viglione,” Amanda proclaimed afterwards, “as the dog, the magician with a rabbit in a hat, and the rabbit itself!” As you do.
The Kill
Mrs. O Lyrics modified slightly to There is no Hitler and no Donald Trump #vote
Pirate Jenny (Kurt Weill, music; Bertolt Brecht, lyrics - but lyrics translated from the original German by Amanda Fucking Palmer herself)
Whakanewha
“We have begun (sorry Crew!) to completely depart from the set list. We were so good last night! Dave has crumpled up his set list!” At this Brian led the crowd in a chant of “DAVE! DAVE! DAVE! DAVE!” in honor of their long-suffering sound guy. Another Christmas (Brian on guitar, Amanda on jingle bells)
Mein Herr (from ‘Cabaret’ by John Kander and Fred Ebb) (Brian on guitar)
Mandy Goes to Med School The prolonged jazzy interlude that they often do during this song was particularly prolonged, particularly jazzy, and heavy on the drums, almost approaching solo status.
<crew intros and thanks>
“There is one more person I would really like to thank. My favorite ever fucking in the world of eight billion years of doing shows I think my favorite security person ever: REY!” The band improvised some uptempo circus music while the crowd chanted “REY! REY! REY! REY!”
“Rey made me cry at the first show yesterday and I told the story last night, but you had to be here, which is why you should come to both.”
“We are now going to play you what we’ve been calling the Boston Trifecta. … We haven’t played shows in our hometown of Boston in like seven years, I think? It’s a little scary! And we thought that we would drag out like the most Bostony songs that we could possibly Bostony play. This is a song from the Dresden Dolls very very first album.”
The Jeep Song
“We were thinking of Boston songs and I was like oh FUUUUUUUCK! This is like the Bostonest Boston song and it is also basically the sequel to The Jeep Song. The Jeep Song is the song about the haunted ex car, and this is the ENTIRE STREET.”
Massachusetts Avenue (Grand Theft Orchestra cover)
Boston
Half Jack Typically the prolonged instrumental intro to Half Jack serves to build tension and anticipation. It’s improvisational, sure, but it’s more designed to set a tone than highlight the band’s musical chops. But tonight? Tonight Brian went OFF. It was essentially a prolonged drum solo during which Brian made his case for Best Drummer in the World. He generally shies away from this sort of naked display of massive talent, but tonight he was apparently all out of fucks and dared the crowd to keep up. It was breathtaking. Girl Anachronism They segued directly from Half Jack into Girl A without so much as a pause for breath. The result was chaotic frenzy. HERE was the manic energy that had been absent last night. This was a sonic firehose aimed directly at your ear holes. The crowd was left gasping for air, begging for mercy, and cheering for more all at the same time.

I attended my first Dresden Dolls show in August of 2004, so this year marks my 20th anniversary following Amanda. I got her a present to celebrate and gave it to her before the show.

Soundcheck! Those lights are really going to make it difficult to get good shots.

Shenanigans!

Due to a poor choice of location tonight most of my pix of Brian looked like this:

Still not quite clear on the concept of hats.

This is what happens when Brian sees me taking a picture of him.

Those fucking lights, man.

Up close and personal with Amanda Palmer

Shenanigans!

That’s a wrap!

Oh my God, thank for you the long-ass essay!!!! 😂 I honestly really appreciate you doing that!! The fangirling made it even better lol, so I trust you. We were both iffy about it, but clearly Lin turned you into a believer lol. We'll see about me...! I remember that rumor about "major pop stars" too, but thank goodness it's a few Broadway stars like Phillipa (when I saw her in his post about the cast announcement I shrieked!) and Jazzy (also shrieked lol). I only know those two... Low-key wish Groff, Daveed, and Anthony Ramos were on the album, but it's okay! Anyways, I'll give your recommendations a listen, even the ones that may or may not make me cry regardless of not knowing the plot. It may take a little bit to get back to you, but I assure you that I (eventually) will!
(I know Warriors is like Grease meets The Outsiders meets West Side Story but that's about it.)
of course anon, take as much time as you need!
actually, the plot of warriors is nothing special. i've never seen the movie and i don't think i ever will (because i just know i'm not going to like it). the musical is really good tho, not necessarily because of the super interesting plot but the music is good, it's so damn catchy, we have amazing cast and the characters are fucking awesome. please give it a try, you won't regret it!
i actually really wanted daveed to be on the album, but oh well... at least we have phillipa and jazzy (and amber my wife).
honestly can't wait for you to listen to it!!!
#the songs i have on repeat now are going down#call me mercy#orphan town#still breathin#sick of running#and quiet girls#i listen to those all the time i seriously can't stop#anyway#everybody go listen to warriors it's so damn good!#[anon]#warriors#lmm#[cøver me. ~ clancy]

btw my albums era experienced a hiatus the past week because the person who was doing the new music friday posts at ONTD deleted their LJ and nobody has taken it over and that was how i was finding like 95% of my albums and i was like WHATEVER SHALL I DO NOW... then belatedly i remembered about e.g. metacritic sort-by-release display, songs i like on dave's mixes enough to be worth investigating further, finally listening to whole albums by bands/artists i always like but have never sat down with (this is a category taken up almost exclusively by 90s/turn of the millennium female-fronted rock bands nick plays at home sometimes like velocity girl and fight like apes and one he was playing recently that had a name that was a bunch of words smushed together that i can't remember...)... so like i can keep it rolling if i want to. i am a little concerned still because none of those channels would have led me to my worst favorite album of 2025 thus far, the fascinatingly unfashionable leony album that sounds like it was made to game the charts in 2012 but was released by a german (?) in 2025 and thus has no cultural cachet whatsoever. but alas. anyway if there's an album you're obsessed with lately (2025 release optional) feel free to drop me a rec! (there's like a 5% chance i will like it if it features exclusively or majority guy vocals and i have never in my life enjoyed listening to something identifiable as jazz or described as "jazzy," which i think is the most objectively terrible thing about my taste... but it is regrettably true. there's country i like and rap i like and even the occasional yelpy white boy indie rock that carves a place for itself in my heart... the exception to my anti-jazz bias, if it exists, has yet to be discovered. but i'm into new experiences in this, my albums era!)

Happy birthday, Mick!
Today, Mick Avory, drummer of the Kinks, celebrates his 81st birthday! ❤
Avory was originally a drummer for the Rolling Stones. Later, however, he answered an advert by Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Pete Quaife, who were looking for a musician to join their band. That was in 1963. Mick stayed with the Kinks for 21 more years!
He was known as the most down-to-earth and least conflictual person in the band. However, when he did get into action, he did it properly (see: the incident in Cardiff, when, provoked by Dave, he hit him with a drum cymbal, which ended up with 16 stitches 😳).
As a drummer, Mick stood out for his great precision and ability to build rhythmic structures that perfectly matched the band's characteristic melodies. His playing style was diverse – from simple but effective strokes in dynamic pieces, to more subtle, almost jazzy accents in calmer compositions. The songs in which his playing is best presented are (in my opinion): You Really Got Me, Sunny Afternoon, Big Sky, Picture Book, Wicked Annabella, Victoria, The Moneygoround.
Happy Birthday! ❤
