aika from @kianamaiart 's "I don't want to be a magical girl" project and lucinda from my own oc verse that currently doesn't have an actual name but I've been calling it "saint dymphna's"

this has been rattling around in my brain ever since I first saw aika LMAO

the similarities they have are so specific which makes it really funny that their personalities are so different

Dymphna, the only daughter to a pagan king, took after her mother in faith and beauty, taking a vow of chastity at a young age. After the death of his wife, Dymphna’s father sought to marry his daughter, causing her to flee. After finding her and her continued refusals, Dymphna’s father cut off her head, making her a martyr at the age of fifteen.

Hey I know you said you were leaving but

Do mentally ill peoppe have vocations? Im trying to discern rn and I think I could go either way, marriage or religious (im a girl if that helps) but I feel like my mental health disqualifies me from both. If I become a parent I risk screwing up my kids, and you cant have marriage without kids in the church. If I pursue religious life, ill never get help. I feel like I cant do anything, like its a disservice to others to try. Idk.

You still have a calling and purpose in life even with mental health issues. I don't know you personally and I know nothing about the situation beyond what you've said. It is true that many communities may turn you away depending on your mental health condition and whether or not you are open to receiving help for it.

So to say pursuing religious life bars you from receiving help is the opposite of what (usually) happens. One of our Sisters has clinical depression and they work so hard to make sure she is safe from herself when her medication stops working and needs to be adjusted. There is another sister who had addict parents and requested special permission to leave the cloister in novitiate to attend Al-Anon meetings.

But even if you pursue marriage, you should still get help. I know that is a lot easier said than done but I would recommend, if you are in the United States, calling 211 and asking about mental health services. A lot of nonprofits have a sliding scale model that is dependent on your income level.

You can live a full life and receive the help you need no matter what path is yours.

Yesterday was st dymphnas feast day. I prayed her chaplet like I have been doing fairly regularly anyway. She had helped me sm. When I pray for her intercession I feel calm. It really helps my mental health. If you're struggling or know someone who is struggling with a mental or nervous affliction definitely consider reaching out to her
