I’m thinking about Donella hearing about Varian’s imprisonment post season one, and feeling pity for him. For one, because he’s Ulla’s son, and two, because he’s clearly a genius who doesn’t deserve to be locked up. He doesn’t deserve to be in Corona, he should be working under her. He has potential.

So she breaks him out, and takes him in. He’s reluctant at first, because at this point he just wants to serve his time and get his dad out. He doesn’t want to be a criminal anymore. He’s hesitant to trust Donella, but he’s basically trapped under her once she takes him in. Hugo however, is able to get to him. Hugo acts as a friend. He’s patient, kind, understanding, and they have similar interests. Hugo is able to prey on Varian’s bitterness to convince him to become a thief as well. They become partners in crime. They’re a force to be reckoned with. They’re truly terrifying together.

Varian sees Hugo as an older brother figure, and even develops a little crush on him. He’s cool, he’s nice, he’s the only friend Varian’s had in awhile. Varian is desperate for validation and love and any form of affection, and he latches onto Hugo hard. Meanwhile Hugo just sees Varian as the perfect little pawn to help him with whatever scheme he comes up with. But this is the first time someone has genuinely cared for him. Varian is so cute and endearing and eager to please and just wants to make Hugo happy. Hugo reluctantly bonds with Varian as well, even if he doesn’t treat him very well.

The age difference isn’t helping, with Hugo being nineteen and Varian being fifteen. Also with Hugo being terrible at emotions and being borderline abusive, and Varian just being happy someone cares for him.

if you actually think about it, emu is the perfect catalyst for all of rui's strange ideas. emu loves to have fun and she loves to see others have fun and smile and she is a bit strange and thinks outside the box. rui is the same way but he's the "idea man". and emu is his cheerleader. rui goes "and what if we end this one with a giant box of fireworks going off, of course taking the proper safety precautions incase of misfire, injury, or an actual fire." and emu looks at him with sparkles in her eyes and goes "that sounds so super duper cool rui-kun!! let's do it it'll be soooo wonderhoy!" because she is just imagining the glorious explosion of sparkles and colors and how the audiences' faces will light up with surprise and joy. they both love a good out of left field way to put a smile on someone's face. also not to mention how previously rui was shunned for his extravagant ideas but not by emu. emu never has any pushback because she has 100% faith in rui to not mess anything up, to put on a good show and not hurt anyone with his ideas. of course they have nene and tsukasa to keep them in check if they get too wild but i think emu is really good for rui. rui needs someone to have complete trust in him and his ideas so that he can have fun and grow from all the things that happened in his past. emu is that someone, she matches his energy and enthusiasm levels, taking all his crazy ideas and only ever going even further with them.

still on my first watch through so i am not yet a full-fledged true detective Understander™, but i love how they show us how rust and marty have become enmeshed in ways that, even after a decade of separation, they can't undo. like, episode 1 (1995) marty would never have said the sentence "father time has his way with us all," that's some odd shit, right there. But 2012 marty finds that to be a reasonable response to rust telling him he "look(s) like (he's) doing all right." and rust just, he still trusts marty to have his back, after a decade of silence, he tells him what he's kept his trap shut about in that interview, gives him the pitch on the cover-up. he tells him shit that, if marty told to the cops, would almost certainly land him a guilty sentence. without a second thought. he doesn't know if marty will help him, but he knows marty won't hurt him. anyway.

Honestly, I'm all for sephiroth and jenova being practically the same thing bc the repeated use of the word puppet by sephiroth himself feels very ironic and bitter. Telling cloud that he doesn't have emotions, that he was created in a lab and that his memories are fake, all of them. That he didn't have a childhood. Never was a child. And yeah, sephiroth being 100% in control and just very unwell also fits in this, in his projection over cloud being his puppet just like he was Shinra's, even though he would never acknowledge it. But I just like the idea that he believes himself freed from everyone's strings, finally in control of his own life for once, just to be too blind to realize that not even those choices were his own bc following orders is still the only thing he knows

I fell off of watching Miraculous Ladybug late in season 4, and I’ve recently been working on catching back up

thinking again about The Ghoul and how certain facets of cooper howard never went away and instead just sort of got intensified or hardened with time, exhibit one: he spends every single interaction with lucy trying to drill into her head "the wasteland is trying to kill you" in the meanest, most straightforward way possible, but he's completely (brutally) honest the entire time - which is a big deal, considering everyone in lucy's life has been lying to her from the beginning!

then you think back to the very first time we're ever introduced to cooper howard, when his daughter, the person he cares about more than anything else on this earth, asks him if he thinks a nuclear apocalypse is gonna happen, and instead of lying to soothe her fears, instead of saying no honey of course it's not gonna happen, he says well i certainly hope not, but us cowpokes, we take it as it comes, right? not "your fears aren't real and they can't hurt you" but "your fears are justified, and that's okay, because you have what it takes to face them."

and i just think that's really, really neat
