One of the reasons why I adore Carl Morck as a character (and perhaps partly see myself in him) comes from the conversation with DCI Bruce about Caroline Kerr in episode 2: talking about the background of the witness, who lives in a poor and fairly run-down neighbourhood, Carl shows that he is familiar with this type of social context, stating that unlike Bruce he comes from a similar place.
So Carl would have a working class background, and I think this adds a very interesting layer to his character: he is not the classic posh detective who also bases part of his superiority on his class and background, but his confidence and arrogance stem mainly from his intelligence, grit and perseverance, which he claims over class, which indeed seems to be a concept he despises (see his interactions with Stephen Burns). His superiority complex probably comes from being able to rise through everything, just using his wit. And I find it very refreshing.

"Are you superior, Carl, to other people?" "Well, it's a low bar isn't it?".
You know a therapy session is not going super well when your therapist decides to eat her packed lunch at her desk. Still Rachel is not giving up and tries to suss Carl out - "Are you superior, Carl, to other people?" "Well, it's a low bar isn't it?".
Priceless body language and death stares from Carl.

DCI Carl Morck [Matthew GoodE] is a brilliant cop but terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh police. After a shooting leaves a young pc dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds himself exiled to the basement & sole member of Department Q; a newly formed cold case unit. The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him. But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs & strays who have everything to prove. So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best - rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer. Dept. Q is a series created and written and directed by American writer / filmmaker Scott Frank, screenwriter of Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Interpreter, The Lookout, Marley & Me, The Wolverine, Logan; and creator of "The Queen's Gambit" & "Monsieur Spade" series. Written by Stephen Greenhorn, Colette Kane, & Chandni Lakhani. Adapted from the novels written by Jussi Adler-Olsen. With episodes directed by Scott Frank. Made by Flitcraft and Left Bank Pictures. Exec produced by Rob Bullock, Scott Frank, & Andy Harries. Netflix debuts Frank's Dept. Q streaming on Netflix starting May 29th, 2025.*

currently on ep 3 for dept q, so here are some fic ideas i came up w while watching
- reader and carl have to work on a case (could be one of the cold ones or a regular) but they've hated each other for years (enemies to lovers to sum it up), involving some good ol banter, some forced proximity, maybe one bed and nightmare trope too🤭)
- reader comforts carl through panic attacks (and vice versa)
- for some reason, a magic!au keeps popping into my head (everyone has a diff power basically)
-first time w him, but he would be so gentle since all grumps have a soft side idk and also worships reader's body since she is a lil insecure
-morning cuddles omg (could be like a continuation of the previous one)
hope these help, cant wait to read what u come up with!!!!
omg THANK YOUUUU this is lovely and so great!! i think it will help indeed, i love all of these ideas!! i shall be letting them stew around in my brain hehe <33

⬆️ "... the thing I’m most proud of. Sod the career, I’ve got a really fab family."
60 seconds with Matthew Goode - Metro UK - 29th May 2025
Interview by Rebecca Cook
THE charmer behind Lord Snowdon in The Crown and Henry Talbot in Downton Abbey returns to Netflix screens in new crime thriller Dept Q this week. Here, Matthew Goode, 47, talks about playing a prickly police officer, his aversion to true crime and why he said the character of Henry was a ‘wet lettuce’...
What attracted you to Dept Q and the character of DCI Morck?
I was dog-walking and pootling around when I got a call from my American agent Joel Lubin. He represents film director Scott Frank, who I worked with about 20 years ago. He said, ‘Scott’s got something cooking and these scripts are amazing.’ He sent me three and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is the best thing I’ve ever read.’ It’s based on a set of Scandinavian novels – it’s brilliant, it’s dark, it’s hilarious.
When you’re playing a prickly character, is it hard to switch off at the end of the day?
You get into a rhythm. The thing about doing long-form television is there isn’t really any switching off because it’s a constant process – it’s like doing four or five movies back to back. It was a seven-month grind. And then you’ve got to throw in having to get home on the Caledonian Sleeper from Scotland to see my family and kids. So I finished on Friday at 8.30pm, got on the train at 10.30pm and woke up in Euston at 5.30am. By season two my wife was like, ‘Only come home when you absolutely have free time because otherwise you’re just not present for anybody.’
Dept Q delves into cold cases and unresolved mysteries. Do you enjoy true-crime documentaries?
No. I know there’s been a big movement in the podcast world but whenever I see anything on late-night television rehashing the poor murder of a real person, I think A: you’re giving away how to get away with it next time because this is how you caught them and B: they’ve never asked the family whether that stuff can be put on. I had a friend of a friend who was affected by something really horrific and I still feel I’d never want to be involved in something like that
You described your Downton Abbey character as a ‘wet lettuce’ recently and that it was no bad thing you’re not returning for the next film...
I didn’t mean it in a horribly derogatory way. I just meant, wouldn’t it be more exciting in some ways if my screen wife Lady Mary Crawley didn’t need a man so she might end up on her own? I’d hope that maybe one of her earlier suitors could come back and whisk her off.
What would you imagine Henry is doing now?
Drinking, probably.
In The Crown you had the unusual experience of another actor – Ben Daniels – take over your role. Did you watch the show as it carried on?
I watched the first season but haven’t watched the show as it carried on, although I know it’s amazing and I had the most wonderful experience. I had such a giggle with Vanessa Kirby, who played Princess Margaret. But the show had to move on and they have to age, so Ben took over. I wasn’t crestfallen. But I did think, ‘Bloody hell, he’s got better eyes than me!’
Do you watch your own work and do your kids?
They couldn’t care less, which is great. I’ve got a nine-year-old, an 11-year-old and a 16-year-old and there’s nothing I think they’d enjoy.
What role has challenged you the most emotionally?
Dept Q, because it was so exhausting to shoot and because the darkness of it was relentless. Once I’ve finished a project, I jettison everything from my memory banks – I ‘Control, Alt, Delete’ a lot. But we’re not saving lives – we’re not in a war zone operating on children.
Have you had to physically transform for any roles?
I always am to a certain point. For this role I lost a bit of weight and the character had a beard and scars and all sorts of things going on. I gave it a lot of thought. Transformations can be massive to myself as the actor but nobody else will notice.
Do you find it hard to motivate yourself to do that?
If you know you’re getting your clothes off at some point, that’s a pretty good way of getting in the gym.
Are you recognised a lot?
I’ve always got a hat on, or in the colder months a beanie. I live in Surrey now. The only people I speak to on a daily basis are my mate Charlie in the betting shop and a lovely guy called Thomas who works in the supermarket, who loves cricket and film. Apart from that I’m just here in the house with kids and my wife and a few friends occasionally. But no one cares. I’ve got friends who can’t go anywhere without it being a real mess on their minds
What might it surprise fans to know about you?
I’m a pretty open book. I’ve been with the same lady for 20 years. That might surprise some people. We’ve been married for nearly 12 and that’s the thing I’m most proud of. Sod the career, I’ve got a really fab family.

"Detective," A woman stands in the doorway to his office; the basement he'd been holed away in. "It appears I'll be working with you. Something about 'difficult personal relations'." Her fingers quote the words with an air of disinterest. It wasn't her place to care.
DCI MORCK- Carl stares at the woman in his office space. He sighs through his teeth "the fuck do you want" he grits out pushing past her to lean back on his desk. "I dont need extra hands with this case. Certainly not from you" with his partner out for a while on loan Carl had been rather bitey

Is this some new kind of therapy?
I sense from Carl's body language and doubtful face he is rather refractory to the idea of therapy.😆 He's met his match in Rachel though. I can't wait to see the dynamics between these two.
