• other than the eddas, is there any book that can help me as a beginner to the norse faith or maybe witchcraft?

• yule is coming up and it is my first pagan festival so could you please help me understand how to celebrate it, is there any norse deities in specific that i should give offerings to? (i plan on making offerings to skadi right now)

Hello there! Thank you so much for the ask. And welcome to this faith! I hope this path is as fulfilling to you as it is to me.

You'll be happy to know there are so much great ressources for norse pagans to use for research. I've actually listed a bunch of them in this previous post, in which I identified what sources were books and which were online ressources.

Now, Yule is a very exciting celebration for heathens! We know that it was a major festival in Iron Age Scandinavia. Traditionally, there would be a toast made in honor of the ancestors, one made in honor of the One-Eyed, to ask for success (he is even called Jólnir, "Figure of Yule"), and one made in honor of Yngvi-Freyr and Njörðr, to ask for fertility and prosperity. This is why these three deities are most often viewed as the main deities of Yule in nordic tradition. Thórr also has some associations with Yule, primarily due to the traditional yule goat decoration still present in Scandinavia today, which may or may not have had ties with him due to his association with goats. Whatever the case, he is also a popular choice within modern practice when it comes to the deities honored during Yule celebrations. You could also very well include Sól in your practice around that time of the year. After all, winter solstice celebrations often serve to rejoice and welcome the return of the sun as the days grow longer once again. It's for this reason that lighting candles or bonfires on the longest night of the year is a popular way to celebrate Yule: it symbolizes the return of light and warmth as the second half of winter commences. There are a few accounts of some sort of "yule log", a very long log decorated with candles, being burned during the twelve days of Yule, though the veracity of this story is debated. Still, it can be fun for us to incorporate a similar tradition into our own celebrations! For example, by decorating a piece of wood and burning it during a ritual as our own yule log. Decorating using greenery (real or fake) is also a popular way to celebrate Yule! It's a way to remind ourselves that despite the cold and the snow, the earth still lives and nature still thrives! Traditionally, one would use plants such as holly, ivy, or any evergreen tree, which stay green throughout the winter. I also can't forget the eternal norse pagan tip: when in doubt, hold a feast! To invite your loved ones around a table and eat homemade food is always one of the best ways to honor the Gods, and this goes for any festival. So much can be done even if you prefer to celebrate alone, or with just a few close friends! Just treat yourself to a hearty winter meal, and save some of it to offer the Gods, along with a glass of the alcohol of your choosing (I generally go for winter drinks, such as mulled wine, warm ice cider and the like). There is only so much I can list at the top of my head, and there are countless ways for you to celebrate Yule. Feel free to dig around for more ideas, and to experiment with whatever feels right! I'll now direct you to this wonderful video, which I discovered a while back and which does a wonderful job of explaining everything we currently know about Yule and midwinter festivals in the nordic cultures.

Now, norse paganism is a fully open practice! Everyone is free to practice it, no matter their ancestry. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise, they would not be speaking the truth!

As for your last question, blót is an Old Norse term meaning "blood", which can seem scary when you put it that way, but it's nothing to be worried about! It merely refers to the act of sacrifice, or as we neo-pagans often say, offering. A blót is a ritualized offering made to the norse Gods! The celebrations around such an event can also be refered to as blót: the term "Yule" originally came from the Old Norse name for the main midwinter sacrifice, Jólablót, which is the name I give to my own winter solstice celebration. We know that during the Scandinavian Iron Age, there were many blóts scattered across the calendar! Among those: Þorrablót, or Husbands' Day, allegedly celebrating the God Thórr, Góublót, or Wives' Day, a celebration of the end of winter, Sigrblót, a festival to ask for victory, Alfablót, celebrated at the end of the harvest season during which offerings to the elves were made, Jólablót, and Dísablót, when offerings to the Dísir were made. Most solitary practionners of norse paganism do not celebrate all of these. After all, little is known about them! Scholars cannot even pinpoint the exact moment of the year when Dísablót was performed. For this reason, we are all free to practice them based on our own interpretations. Since I am a devout worshipper of Yngvi-Freyr, I offer to him along with the elves on Alfablót. Though Jólablót is arguably the most popular blót to perform among heathens, I have met practionners who did not practice it. The blóts you choose to perform are all up to you!

I have only scratched the surface of how norse pagan holidays can be celebrated! I hope you'll find as much information as you need to prepare for Jólablót, and I also wish for you to have lots of fun celebrating it! Do be sure to trust your gut when it comes to celebrating pagan holidays. It all comes down to you, your preferences and what feels right. i just quit my job, that drained me. It feels both bad and good, because I don't have another one lined up, but it takes out all my life energy. The energy of my coworkers is dark and bullying, it's disrespectful. One of them is giving me the chills since day 1 and has dark energy. I don't know if witchcraft is a thing, but I randomly saw a video about it, i think it was wizardliz and how she said you take that energy and get these thought w you, even if you don't want it, i was like, ok this is exactly this person. It's hard to explain. Anyway, in the end it's me allowing myself getting disrespected. It means I'm not in the right place. The darkness that it gives me, is pushing me to see the light. But still I feel bad, cause a lot of people need a job, want a job, and I threw it away after 4 years. I'm sorry for ranting in your inbox. I didn't tell anybody, because I know people talk me out of it, cause it's a good job and you need money right. But i feel like i'd hang myself, being around these people a day longer. I don't wanna say there's bad people, but it felt lke that and i know everybody that puts darkness on me, needs to find their own light and pushes me to find mine. heyyyy, first of all!!! congratulations on making a decision that makes you happy. you did something brave and took your future into your own hands. dont let outside noise, guilt, or fear move you from acknowledging that. there are always ways to make money, but our time here and what we do with it is finite so the quality of your experience matters.

i think you did a powerful thing trying to find how those negative experiences could teach you something or push you toward an experience of life you would rather have. as im sure you know, negative experiences are half the battle. mastering ourselves and our response to them is often the harder and more necessary task. however, knowing that can make leaving harder, cause not being able to 'rise above' and endure something tough can often feel like a failure to master yourself or those circumstances. that said, i think you did the right thing leaving a space that doesnt make you happy. as much as we can change ourselves, its not our job to change people, and at a certain point we have to believe and trust in what we feel. our feelings toward things are some of our indicators toward whether or not what we experience is aligned with us.

in terms of witchcraft. i know juju is a real thing but i dont give it much weight or credence simply because i believe like frequencies latch on to like frequencies. if its true that the universe is mental and we create our realities then those things that manifest in our lived experience have their root within us. — this is why 1) theres a deep meaning to 'no weapon formed against me shall prosper'. when you have conviction of yourself and your path, wayward energies cannot get to you or conquer you. if someone would wish you evil, but you hold no resonance toward that evil, or you have no fear/insecurity concerning their power over you, that evil cannot latch on to you and returns back to sender. — 2) (this relates to how you conduct yourself in the future), practice stilling yourself, knowing where you are going, and what your experience of where you will to go looks and feels like. then go forward. when you encounter people you disagree with, who trigger you, or who give you a similar vibe to the people you have just left, you can do one of two things. seek the aspect of you that identifies with them. (if you didn't identify or fear their ability to rub off on you, you would be able to tune them out or brush them off. soon they would cease to exist around you whether its them getting moved to another department, or you getting promoted etc) orrrr. choose to see them. understand that beyond the face they show you, they have different faces and aspects to them. who are they to their mother? their brother? their children. by seeing them in the full scope of their humanity you can remember that they are more than the aspect of them you see that aggravates you & in doing so treat them as you would treat someone you love. its a funny thing, cause that person could be an asshole to everyone else, yet the softest most generous person to you, because when we see people for who they are or even more than what they are, they usually respond in like mind.

He was so happy to be out of the enchantment and ready to explore. So, I thought of writing something that took place after he returned to Narnia, above ground. Narnia rejoiced and prospered in another time of peace. No worries were had from the Lantern Wastes in the West to Cair Paravel by the Eastern Sea. The land’s new king was a sign of new beginnings.

Time for mourning had passed a few years ago when King Caspian the Seafarer died soon after his son Prince Rilian returned from over a decade of enchantment in the Underworld. No threats lingered from unknown spaces. All was peaceful.

Hardly anything worth wild would be recorded in history books. One could write their own life it would seem.

Light blue skies held slow decorations of small white clouds. Crisp morning air mingled with a sea breeze swept in by the river. A refreshing start of a day.

You refused to stay in on a day such as that. The breeze shifted the branches and leaves in a rhythm that called you to join. To enjoy life. To move through the moments with creative steps.

So you danced.

Between trees and rock, you twirled and kicked to nature’s music. Whispers of Narnia. All of it brought a light warmth to your heart. You channeled those feelings through your limbs. From morning to midday, you could think of nothing more fun.

A delighted laugh rang through the foliage.

You stumbled in surprise. Glancing around, you searched for the source.

A fair-haired young man stepped forward and inclined his head. A cape around his shoulders swayed with the bow. All the easier to recognize the King of Narnia as light reflected off of the cron on top of his head.

“Forgive me, please, dear lady,” said King Rilian, “I was overcome with immense joy watching your dance. I did not mean to intrude.”

You curtsied. Any bewilderment of the hidden laugh subsided.

“Your Majesty is too kind. There is no intrusion in this Wood.”

“Then I am pardoned from being an uninvited audience?”

“Nay. I invite you, my King. For I do not hold the disposition to stop dancing if it brings you such joy. No pardon is needed.” You gave a twirl and another curtsy, all the while you smiled at the young man.

Kind eyes beheld you with genuine interest. One that was equally returned.

“I am honored, my lady.”

Sunlight cast on him and you could swear he glowed with goodness from within. A descendant of a star.

Steps to the left and steps to the right, you felt like you could float up into the wind. The canopy above shifted and light appeared to jump.

King Rilian’s smile brightened every shadow in the Wood. Its brilliance was difficult to turn away from. You would miss it if you did.

Slowly twisting to your right, you kept your sights on the man. His torso seemed to tilt in whichever direction you headed.

“I would be honored if your Majesty would join me. Dancing is all the more joyful when shared.”

The tiniest flush colored his cheeks.

Surely the King remembered all of his lessons aside from courtly ones.

“I could never decline such an invitation as welcoming and truthful as yours, my lady.”

Facing one another, you both inclined your heads. Gazes met and locked, remaining attached from a distance as each of you slowly stepped in patterns. Each pass and return brought you closer.

You smiled an quickened the tempo. Twirling from his side to behind him.

King Rilian chuckled as he attempted matching your movements. His cape caught air in a flourish.

“If I may,” you asked, “was your Majesty looking for adventure or solitude in these Woods?” Five quick steps and your fingertips brushed his cape as you passed.

“You may,” said he. “I went for a walk, not far as I promised.” King Rilian’s eyes softened as he weaved a path beside you. “Upon walking into the Woods I had no search in mind. Perhaps I was meant to.”

“What did his Majesty find?”

The King slowed to a stop, about three paces from you. “I found joy.”

Your feet remained on the ground.

“I found beautiful kindness.” Bright warm eyes shone with boundless honesty. His hopeful smile lingered as he studied you.

You tilted your head, “Has his Majesty not had joy?” Your heart tightened in sadness at the thought.

“I have experienced joy, but one such as this.”

You returned his smile. Delight swelling your heart.

Many Narnians knew the loss and pain King Rilian had endured. Losing his mother, daughter of a star, to the poison of a snake. Seeking vengeance, but falling into an enchantment by a witch, the snake, for ten years before it was broken. As a prince he returned in time to see his father one last time.

King Rilian needed peace, freedom, and joy. He found joy in the Woods with you. A great joy.

Standing amongst the trees and Narnian air, you could not deny the joy you shared as well.

You walked up to the King and declared softly, “I have performed many dances in good company and in solitude, but this has given me the most happiness.”

Warm fingertips brushed against your palms.

“Will you dine with me this evening, my lady?”

Your fingers intertwined with his.

“I would be honored, my king.”

“Rilian.”

A History of Severen Van Sickle's Lineage ( 1809-1873 )

Esper Van Sickle was born in 1809 in the Kingdom of Holland (Netherlands). His family had both agricultural and cattle farms, which benefited from the previous Golden Age of trade; making them fairly prosperous for a time. They did well for themselves and his upbringing was uneventful. As the middle child of five he did not stand to inherit much except for the knowledge of how to work a ranch, something that would prove useful later in life. He first began to consider emigration to the Americas amidst the rumblings of the French Revolution. After growing up during the tail end of the Napoleonic Wars, and his family’s regaling of the previous civil unrest in his youth, Esper wanted to avoid the conflict as much as possible and find a more prosperous future.

During the subsequent economic downturn, many trade workers had moved to more economical environs. As class divides between the north and south deepened, Esper was forced to go further north in search of a new smith to help on the farm, this is where he met Annelis Smit. She grew up with only her father, her mother having died in childbirth. He owned and operated the only smithy in a rural town, even so, his work was consistent and popular. Often referred out by locals to outsiders, his good name and generous attitude helped keep the small town afloat. Unfortunately, he took to drinking just as adamantly, leaving Annelis to finish the work he would abandon when too far in his cups. She picked up the trade quickly out of necessity, soon taking over completely for her inebriated father. Though it seemed unsightly for a young woman to be engaged in physical labor, there were no others skilled enough to take the post. When Esper offered her a contract she was more than happy to oblige, eager to have a life outside the backwater smithy. After two years, in light of his plans to emigrate, he proposed marriage to her, more out of convenience than romance, but she was agreeable nonetheless.

They boarded a ship in 1829, landing in New York and traveling with their fellow Dutchmen out to Midwest America. Annelis proved vital to their coexistence, knowing both French and Dutch, whereas her husband mostly spoke French. The small group they resided with was a contingent of devout Catholics. Esper saved their money by working as a day laborer on a Quaker farm, picking up what he could while his wife gained an education in maintenance of the home; tasks previously never set before her. Although they did their best to integrate, Annelis had rarely if ever attended church services, and Esper maintained only a passing practice of the religion of his region. Their inconsistent adherence to the faith was tolerated until Esper sought a plot of land of his own. He was denied full stop. In his frustration, he decided to seek out true independence.

Annelis and Esper made their way down south to Texas. They followed in the path of other land seeking Americans under the invitation of the Mexican government to become Anglo-Texans. They were unaware that the colonization effort in the northern part of the state was to keep a barrier between the Mexican invaders and indigenous tribes. Armed only with the knowledge that the land was going cheap and promised in plenty, they signed away their savings, hoping for the best. They were given a decent acreage, and immediately set about making the land theirs, determined to have their own horse ranch using a line of Dutch Warmbloods. Even amongst the competition surrounding them, their fine stock turned heads, the resiliency of the breed faring well even in the faraway land. Shortly after getting themselves situated, the Texas Revolution began. In an effort to make sure they could keep their ranch, Esper joined the conflict, mainly in his own self interest. Annelis kept the ranch up in his stead, alone with the few hands they were able to keep on, impressively keeping everything afloat.

He returned home, weary, with a few more scars than when he left, but none the worse for wear. He had served primarily under General Houston, a man he came to respect. Now, with their homestead secure, the couple settled into married life. After two miscarriages, Severen Van Sickle was born in 1839, their one and only child. Severen would prove to be wily and headstrong, eager to learn, though reckless and stubborn. His father had him riding as soon as he could hold reins in his hands, keen to have his son as his right hand in what he hoped would become a family business. At home, both of his parents emphasized him learning not only English, but the specific lingo of their home state to better assist in dealing trades. He learned their native French and Dutch, rarely if ever speaking either outside of the home; picking up a smattering of Spanish from those he encountered on neighboring ranches. Both of his parents grew up during the education reformation in the Netherlands and stressed getting him into the schoolhouse whenever able. There was not always a schoolmaster around, so they kept books in the house to make certain he learned his letters and arithmetic; the only subjects either could speak on with some authority. At school, Severen did well on the work given, studiously engaged on his lessons, yet when left to his own devices would often become meddlesome Frequently disciplined with isolation, he often wore signage declaring him idle, or coming home with badly bruised knuckles. This did not stop him from becoming a favored student by the itinerant teacher, often charmed by his disarmingly easy humor and willingness to stay and sharpen pencils or help repair quills or pen nibs. What was usually overlooked was this charade was employed to enable Severen to have school supplies, as he pocketed writing utensils unobserved, as well as vellum, and his first slate. His mother never questioned when he came home with a new book, though if the thievery was discovered by his father, Severen was punished, though not dissuaded. Amongst other children he often started contests or picked fights, always eager to square up to any he thought stronger than himself. This habit would continue into adulthood, often mistaken for a desire for leadership, more so born out of an innate bravado and developed love of showmanship. In this regard, he had few friends, many enemies (all reluctant to stand up to him), and notable notoriety amongst others his age. It worried his parents some, him staying closer to the ranch instead of playing, yet his father was happy to have the extra set of hands with the horses; using any extra free time to help hone the boy’s skills in roping and riding.

Esper would be pulled into one more engagement in 1846, the Mexican-American War. In defense of his own land, he set out to make sure his family would have their homestead kept safe. Now with the addition of his only living child during this war, he was ever more eager to protect his family. Having witnessed firsthand the brutal repercussions wartime had across the land in his youth, Esper sought to safeguard those he loved. Back on the ranch, Annelis and Severen had to contend with his exact fears. Raiders targeted even rural homesteads in the hopes of finding unguarded goods; nor did those that previously traveled through the land they had acquired take kindly to their presence when discovered. Annelis had no hesitancy in taking up arms against those that meant her family violence, and ensured her boy knew how to handle a rifle even at his young age. Though ammunition was not always in ready supply, her skill in the forge proved more than viable for handcrafting lead bullets, and had the opportunity come her way she might have even taken up gunsmithing. The pair kept the Van Sickle ranch well protected, and after complicated dealings, managed to work out some arrangements with their indigenous neighbors, bartering well trained horses for supplies.

By the time Esper came home, suffering a leg injury that would give him a permanent limp, and later be his downfall, he returned to a boy who broke wild mustangs, promoted their thoroughbred horses in feats of skill at other ranches, and was a deadshot at twenty paces. Impressed, but wary of his progeny's foolhardy pursuits, he would encourage his successes, and rebuke failure harshly; hoping to keep the boy’s arrogance in check—ultimately failing in this regard. He mainly used reproachful silence as discipline, though not hesitant with a switch or horsewhip if deemed necessary. Severen would come to view his mother as a bastion of stability and his father a quiet enigma whom he sought to best. At the age of ten, Severen was gifted his own revolver, and by thirteen had earned a name for himself as a preeminent horse tamer and trick shot.

As the indigenous tribes they had partnered with in the area became fewer, rounded up by the state and moved out to reservations, Esper began to pay more of a mind to the ruminatings in the Texas government, mainly about how the people in its borders would be treated. While Severen delighted in tales of The Red Ghost (having perhaps had a hand in the phantom’s construction, and most assuredly stolen at least one camel from the brigade), Esper and Annelis listened attentively to the political happenings around them. Both had plenty of experience in the Netherlands of what occurred when one people were considered greater than another. Neither one, nor any family of theirs, had any dealings in the trade of other humans, and what had been witnessed around them they had previously considered not of their personal concern. More and more, however, with rumblings of secession and laws being passed in the effort to increase inequality, they did their best to defame such beliefs to their teenage son. Although the abolitionist movement was not popular in their home state, they did what they could to assist those fleeing or freed. By giving them a place to stay and paid labor, there was little that Patrols could do with the family insisting that those on their ranch had been dutifully employed. Those who could not be convinced rarely made it off the property. Under the guise of trade, the Van Sickles helped escort some of those seeking freedom across the border into Mexico. These often dangerous escapades ignited in Severen an even more fervent delight for risk. Reading about John Brown’s raids only further incentivized him, needing no excuse for violence, yet enjoying the excuse of “free reign” to cut down those perceived as enemies. On one such run he conducted solo at the age of fifteen, Severen ended up killing three Catchers who illegally followed them into Mexico. He went into hiding, sending word to his parents, though this would be one of the last few communications they would ever receive from him. His mother would be the only one to see him in person again.

When he could at last re-emerge, he set out to make a name for himself, far from the drudgery of ranch work. Using his talents for entertaining, he employed himself with the newly popular medicine shows convincing the snake oil salesmen to take him up as a tout, or barker, to draw in the crowd. He eagerly performed eccentric gun tricks, or rode wild horses through town to pull in the audience. Sometimes he would even sell the patent concoctions himself, making a tidy coin. He gained a moniker The Wild Dutchman for a time, known to take on any dare or duel. A few seeking to make good in their Manifest Destiny tried to hire him to their employ, but he proved to be obstinate and unruly when his routes or methods were questioned, causing him to be quickly let go, if not outright leaving himself. Never one to rest on his laurels, or stay out of trouble, Severen ventured into banditry. With the states ramping up to the Civil War, he made himself scarce, unwilling to join the conflict in the Confederate ranks, and feeling he could do more good for any people in need if left to his own devices.

Back home, Esper was too old to be forced into the draft, and the couple remained resolute in their assistance of those seeking escape. In 1863, while trying to mount a new stallion, Esper lost his footing and fell out of the saddle due to his poor right leg. The startled horse trampled him leaving him barely alive. Annelis did all she could for him, but a week later he died. Severen was never notified of his father’s passing. His mother was left alone to care for the ranch, which she did with aplomb, though with the knowledge that its legacy would likely end with her.

Severen, meanwhile, gathered together a ragtag group of miscreants to raid pro-Confederate homesteads, and to cause general mayhem. He would not claim to have anything other than chaos in mind when going on these rampages, but would on occasion direct those he freed back to the ranch with a note for his mother, never expecting to hear back. During the Civil War proper, Severen remained out of reach of both the law and conscription, thought the former would catch up to him on occasion. When he needed somewhere to lie low he used alliances he had built with other ranchers in Mexico, or native tribes to hide out. His crimes escalated from acts in the pursuit of helping others, to bank and train heists. With the recklessness of his acts ever increasing he often had to draw iron. After his first act of murder the body count only became easier to increase. From the delightful Wild Dutchman, Severen became known as Reaper. As much for his proclivity to gun men down as consigning those that traveled with him to an early grave. Few were noteworthy in his crew, his compatriots in frequent rotation as he endangered their lives with little regard. Feared instead of applauded, Severen was not discouraged from performing eccentric feats even in the process of murdering those who tried to stand up to him. Of the few times he was successfully arrested, he would draw large crowds, ready to watch the miscreant hang or make a daring escape, equally pleased by either result.

Even as a notorious outlaw he sometimes defended homesteaders from bushwhackers, the indentured from their “masters”, and often sided with indigenous tribes who had shown him friendliness in the past, but these were acts of loyalty, something he could not be said to be without. This would not stop him from seeking payment for these favors then or in the future, happily committing retributive acts if stiffed. His most infamous crime was the slaughter of the town of Ponyville. What had started as an outcry to his cheating during a poker game became a deadly shootout. Severen (and what gang members survived) were the only ones left living, having gunned down every person in the quaint burg. This was in 1868.

Three years later he would be approached by a man, Jesse Hooker, who confessed an appreciation for the carnage he had committed, offering a proposition of partnership in further heinous endeavors; with the benefit of immortality. Although skeptical at first, Severen accepted, murdered the posse that had come along with him, and turned his back on humanity with impunity. In the wake of his newfound hunger, he committed even bloodier slaughters, using his every power to the most extreme he could manage. There was one rule that Jesse stressed above all others, and it would bring Severen to his mother’s side one last time. He arrived on the old doorstep in 1873, Annelis having recently turned 60 and ailing poorly. Jesse had convinced him that all social ties to the past should be broken off, lest they draw one back toward the mortal world. Severen agreed to do so, though he long held the belief that it was out of Jesse’s own loss of his wife and two daughters that he believed this. Their murder by Union soldiers frequently angered his associate, though the subject lost its impetus when Jesse could neither inspire ire in his companion, nor vitriol. Severen simply ridiculed the man for joining a fruitless cause that needn’t ever begun. Though they could agree that the reasoning for it was unwarranted, Severen rebuked Jesse for participating, even under duress, instead of deserting.

Jesse had been drafted from the second Conscription Act, joining as a privateer so he could at least keep his steam vessel and work the Mississippi river routes he was used to. For awhile this had worked fine, but as the Union blockades grew more fierce he was forced to abandon both his ship and family, assigned for the rest of his service to the CSS Gaines. When the ship was sunk in the Battle of Mobile Bay, he was one of the wounded soldiers that eventually drifted onto the beach, thought dead. What found him on deck had rendered it so he would never fear death again. Such a gift did not dull the despair he felt when finally he made it to his home to find it torched with his family slain within.

It took him time to hone his skills and learn the laws of his new nocturnal life. Once honed, he spent his time trying to find someone who could help him with him avenge those he lost. Although he had every confidence he had the right man, it became apparent his Reaper could not be inspired to rally to his cause for vengeance. He had hoped to provoke ire in Severen suggesting he end his own family, to prove a point about the pain he felt, but the man only agreed and took to task. The two went along to the Van Sickle ranch, finding it with naught but chickens and goats left, his sickly mother the only human remaining.

While Jesse watched from afar, Severen reunited with the woman who had raised him. They were awkward and quiet with one another, only able to find connection through the paintings she had managed to complete in her time of solitary solace. What had been meant as a quick death became a three night stay. She never questioned why he slept through the day, nor why he never ate in front of her. She shared with him all that he had missed, he told her stories of his escapades, freely telling her the truth as he could tell her illness was terminal, and demise soon. He fasted up till the last night, then, with a savage hunger, he drained her dry, despite how horrid her diseased blood made him feel. Severen took the silver ring from her hand his father had given her, leaving everything else in his former abode where it lie.

After burying his mother beside his father, Severen returned to Jesse assuring his full commitment to the new life he had begun. Jesse was taken back by his loyalty, and promised to show it in kind, assuring his new partner he would never doubt him. The two turned away from the human world, committed to an eternity lived in shadow.

Enhancing Solidarity and Cooperation To Overcome Risks and Challenges And Jointly Build a Better World

Your Excellency President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa,

Members of the Business Community,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Friends,

I wish to extend my warm congratulations on the success of the BRICS Business Forum in South Africa!

Ten years ago here in South Africa, we BRICS leaders witnessed the birth of the BRICS Business Council. Since then, the Council has stayed true to its founding mission. It has seized opportunities to deepen cooperation, contributing to economic and social development of BRICS countries and helping sustain global economic growth.

Right now, changes in the world, in our times and in history are unfolding in ways like never before, bringing human society to a critical juncture. Should we pursue cooperation and integration, or just succumb to division and confrontation? Should we work together to maintain peace and stability, or just sleepwalk into the abyss of a new Cold War? Should we embrace prosperity, openness and inclusiveness, or allow hegemonic and bullying acts to throw us into depression? Should we deepen mutual trust through exchanges and mutual learning, or allow hubris and prejudice to blind conscience? The course of history will be shaped by the choices we make.

An ancient Chinese thinker observed that “following the underlying trend will lead one to success, while going against it can only cause one to fail.” We humankind have achieved notable economic development and social progress over the past decades, and that is because we have drawn lessons from the two world wars and the Cold War, followed the historical trend of economic globalization, and embarked on the right path of openness and development for win-win cooperation. Our world today has become a community with a shared future in which we all share a huge stake of survival. What people in various countries long for is definitely not a new Cold War or a small exclusive bloc; what they want is an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys enduring peace, universal security and common prosperity. Such is the logic of historical advance and the trend of our times.

Ten years ago, I made a proposition of building a community with a shared future for mankind, calling on all countries to build this planet we all call home into a harmonious family. In the face of high winds, choppy waters and even treacherous storms, we in all countries need to uphold the correct views of the world, of history and of our overall interests, and act to translate the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind into reality.

—We need to promote development and prosperity for all. Many emerging markets and developing countries (EMDCs) have come to what they are today after shaking off the yoke of colonialism. With perseverance, hard work and huge sacrifices, we succeeded in gaining independence and have been exploring development paths suited to our national conditions. Everything we do is to deliver better lives to our people. But some country, obsessed with maintaining its hegemony, has gone out of its way to cripple the EMDCs. Whoever is developing fast becomes its target of containment; whoever is catching up becomes its target of obstruction. But this is futile, as I have said more than once that blowing out others’ lamp will not bring light to oneself.

Every country has the right to development, and the people in every country have the freedom to pursue a happy life. With that in mind, I have proposed the Global Development Initiative, with the goal of promoting development for all by the international community and boosting the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With the support of many countries, solid gains have been made in pursuing this initiative, with cooperation flourishing in various fields. China will work with all other countries to speed up cooperation under the Global Development Initiative, strengthen drivers of global development, promote the reform of the World Trade Organization in a comprehensive and in-depth manner, meet common challenges together and make life better for people across the world.

—We need to achieve universal security. Recent years have seen a turbulent world; many countries and regions are plagued by wars and conflicts and many people are displaced. Members of the international community share the pressing hope to eradicate the root cause of conflicts and wars, and find a fundamental way to realize enduring peace and security globally. Facts have shown that any attempt to keep enlarging a military alliance, expand one’s own sphere of influence or squeeze other countries’ buffer of security can only create security predicament and insecurity for all countries. Only a commitment to a new vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security can lead to universal security.

Last year, I put forward the Global Security Initiative, and it has gained support from over 100 countries and international organizations. China stands ready to jointly pursue this initiative with all others. We should have dialogue and oppose confrontation, forge partnership but not alliance, and pursue win-win outcome and oppose zero-sum game, and work together to build a community of security.

—We need to stay committed to exchanges among civilizations and mutual learning. One flower alone cannot make a beautiful spring; only blossoming of a rich variety of flowers can bring spring to the global garden. Human civilization is colorful by nature. It is precisely because of their differences in history, culture and system that all countries need to interact with one another, learn from each other, and advance together. Deliberately creating division with the assertion of “democracy versus authoritarianism” and “liberalism versus autocracy” can only split the world and lead to clash of civilizations.

I have put forward the Global Civilization Initiative, calling for promoting diversity of global civilizations, the common values of humanity, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation. China welcomes all other countries to get involved in cooperation under this initiative. We should encourage different civilizations to bring out their best and flourish together; we should break barriers to exchanges, and renew human civilization.

As an ancient Chinese philosopher observes, “Change is the nature of the universe.” The collective rise of EMDCs represented by BRICS is fundamentally changing the global landscape. EMDCs have contributed as high as 80 percent of global growth in the past 20 years, and their share in the global GDP has increased from 24 percent 40 years ago to more than 40 percent. Just as a line in a Chinese poem reads, “No mountains can stop the surging flow of a mighty river.” Whatever resistance there may be, BRICS, a positive and stable force for good, will continue to grow. We will forge stronger BRICS strategic partnership, expand the “BRICS Plus” model, actively advance membership expansion, deepen solidarity and cooperation with other EMDCs, promote global multipolarity and greater democracy in international relations, and help make the international order more just and equitable. The gathering between BRICS countries and more than 50 other countries in South Africa today is not an exercise of asking countries to take sides, nor an exercise of creating bloc confrontation. Rather, it is an endeavor to expand the architecture of peace and development. I am glad to note that over 20 countries are knocking on the door of BRICS. China hopes to see more joining the BRICS cooperation mechanism.

China stays committed to an independent foreign policy of peace and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. As a developing country and a member of the Global South, China breathes the same breath with other developing countries and pursues a shared future with them. China has resolutely upheld the common interests of developing countries and worked to increase the representation and voice of EMDCs in global affairs. Hegemonism is not in China’s DNA; nor does China have any motivation to engage in major-power competition. China stands firmly on the right side of history, and believes that a just cause should be pursued for the common good.

Happy New Year! Welcome to the new year! Congratulations, we all made it!

Unfortunately, we seem to think January alone or the first three months is the new year. Why can’t it be a new year always?

A lot of people start the year by making “new year’s resolutions,” things they intend to either do or not do. Sadly, not many see this through. Some don’t even last until the end of January.

It’s always good to start the year with plans and preparation, but we must remember that, as Psalm 37:5 says, only God can make our plans what they ought to be if we commit them to Him.

Job’s impassioned speech to his friends could serve as our resolution, not just for the new year but for life generally.

The Bible encourages us to examine our lives and resolve to change them if necessary (although not just at the beginning of a new year). Psalm 17:3 says that we should resolve to keep our speech pure, saying: “I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed.”

Ephesians 4:22-24 encourages us to put off our old selves—the “old self” that refused to trust and serve Christ earnestly. But we should be renewed or transformed in the mind, according to Romans 12:2, as we study and apply God’s Word and begin to think in new and right ways.

The new year should be a new beginning for us in many ways, especially in spiritual things. We should endeavor to enter and remain in the new year with renewed minds.

So many of us walked the proverbial wilderness in the last year, wishing, praying, and hoping that God would do something new for us. God is promising in Isaiah 43:19 that He is, and will do, something new for us—something unprecedented and wonderful, not just for the new year but always.

We make resolutions that are often too unrealistic; however, so many of our resolutions fail. Resolutions are sometimes wishful thinking, with no way to make them happen. For example, you might resolve to make a million this year, but if you don’t have a job or a business, how do you plan to earn it? It probably isn’t going to happen. Other resolutions fail because we aren’t willing to make the sacrifices necessary to reach them.

When we plan with God, as Proverbs 16:9 states, He directs and establishes our plans and paths, with little or no chance of failure. Even if you made resolutions, who holds you accountable for keeping them? No one! All too soon, we find ourselves falling off the bandwagon. But when we make godly plans, the scriptures hold us accountable to obedience.

We must remember that, according to Romans 7:18, the real problem with not being able to sustain carnal resolutions is within us—within our hearts and minds. We’d all like to be better people, but no matter how hard we try, we find ourselves tripped up by our moral failures and weaknesses. Even Paul experienced this: “I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.”

According to Deuteronomy 7:13, obedience to the covenant of God leads to blessings. Everything we would need, want, and desire in the new year is in the Lord. May it be a wonderful one.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the privilege of seeing 2025. Thank you for the gift of life. May the year be established and prosper by Your word and Spirit as I commit my life and everything into Your hands for godly perfection. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
