periodically it hits me that I won graduate school and I have to go sit with that for a while. like, yes, I finished, I got the doctorate, but I was never in any actual doubt that I was going to finish the degree, just concern over how long it would take. I was -- like I think most graduate students are, especially in the humanities -- in some pretty serious doubt that I would be able to get a job in academia, let alone a tenure track job. (I applied to a couple of alt-ac jobs in university admin and was looking seriously at government jobs, but only applied for one internship I didn't get.) and yet! I won graduate school! I got a tenure track job! in a department that I like a lot, even if it's in a location that I am uuuuuhhhhhhh still less than enthused about. in the humanities! as an ancient historian! there aren't exactly a lot of jobs for ancient historians out there! (I know, I applied to like 95% of them last cycle, and the only ones I didn't apply to were at public universities in Texas or Florida or at private highly religious institutions, those were my red lines.)

it's actually genuinely shocking that I got a job doing the thing I spent the last sixteen years of my life (counting my undergrad) training to do. getting a TT job in academia is a little like playing pro sports or making it in Hollywood or becoming a prima ballerina, just way less glamorous. like, do I want to stay in this town? not particularly. will I still want to be in academia after a year-two-three-five in this position? possibly not! but I still get to put "assistant professor" on my CV and like. I won graduate school.

OH while im at it Saira on the show does not need to explicitly state whether she’s gay for people to appreciate how she embodies queerness. because she does! she is a gnc masc woman! she’s punk! she has built up armor against the world and struggles to be vulnerable! she has a complicated relationship with her family! she has ride or die deep personal friendships with other women! she plays guitar! her character doesn’t need to be “confirmed gay” to be relatable to queer people because she’s like that already. About the accents: if someone has a very "proper" Italian they are either foreigners or politicians/dignitaries/etc. So that fits perfectly for Machete, but I think it would be so funny if he sometimes slipped up and used a Nepalese word bc he forgot one in "proper" Italian lol

thinking about if veilguard had started earlier. if we'd recruited the companions all right away, and done team building and team bonding and whatever as we track solas to Minrathous. And then the mid game / end of act 1 is fighting solas and he kills Varric (who we've come to grow attached to as a new PC and potentially new player), and gets into Rook's head, and now the Evanuris are out and are the big bad for the remainder of the game not right from the beginning so the stakes actually feel higher. and you've already started to build the relationships with your companions so choices like Minrathous/Treviso and who leads the Virmire Isle of the Gods mission (which could be expanded to be any of the companions) hit harder and you have more of a reason to care about their personal quests while the world is ending. and instead of trying to trick solas with a fake ritual dagger which is dumb and stupid you have to make various dialogue choices throughout the game to successfully convince him to bind himself to the fade, and/or the INQUISITOR is the one who distracts him so you can get the jump on him (so the Inquisitor is there at the end no matter if they romanced him or not???) and force him into the binding (either with you or without you depending on how many companions make it). AND/OR maybe even "fail state"/bad ending where Solas does slice the veil down after all.

Season 27 is NOT confirmed for a June release!

I'm seeing a lot of rumors going around that season 27 has been confirmed to drop in June of this year, and several people have reached out to me to confirm if this was true or not. What I think is happening is that there is some confusion happening between new episodes being produces vs the streaming library rights.

HBO's contract to host the streaming rights to South Park is up in 2025-- and as many of you know, there's been a lawsuit between HBO and Paramount about the details of the contract that has lead to a lack of new content since it was filed.

This tweet that has been going around as the "proof" is actually referring to Paramount having access to SP after the HBO contract is up, essentially bringing SP back "in house" to Paramount Plus. This has been spoken about happening in June from a few different sources, including this one HERE directly from the meeting minutes:

“Internationally, where we have South Park exclusively for SVOD. It ranks as a top five star driver and the number two engagement driver, and we're excited to have the South Park series return to Paramount+ here in the U.S. starting in June of 2025.”

I do believe that after the streaming rights goes back to Paramount and some of their issues with HBO are mitigated, we will get a regular season run likely in September when it usually airs. I think it is a safe bet to assume that we will get another longform special on P+ early in the year (specials have never been hindered by the lawsuit nonsense), but I feel like the most likely return date for season 27 is September 2025.

as someone doing my (deliberately very slow) second watch of s2 of due south with the expectation that s3-4 will be something to save for the new year somewhen, there's something very interesting about knowing a very little bit about those seasons: ray goes undercover in las vegas i believe, and leaves the show as a main, but returns at times. how many times? i don't know, don't tell me -- meg gets a cute butchy haircut that makes her and fraser's gender vibes even more intense -- there's a new guy and he is also ray, but the other one, and i get the feeling that there's a bit of role-reversal in who is getting whomst to take better care of themself... maybe

i think the way i've ended up watching the show (in no small part because im semi-communally watching with @gjdraws and eventually @hunkydorkling (no rush)) as being nice and drawn out, means ive really gotten to bask in the vibes of s1-2. they're beautiful establishing seasons that also stand on their own -- if the show's myriad of cancellations had stuck, one or two seasons would have worked (altho it would have been sad, because you do get the feeling that there is more story to tell)

it also means im definitely in a very different show to the majority of fandom, hence why ive avoided the tags and read very little fic (altho, some fic!) and only follow a couple of people, because the show, to me, is about fraser and ray vecchio because it's the only show i know (so far) and ive been marinating in that show for a few months now, to the point that im interested about how it'll feel when ray kowalski comes along

i expect i'll enjoy watching his dynamic with fraser, i expect it'll be different, and i very much expect it to feel like something that only exists because of everything that happened with fraser and ray in s1-2, because everything that fraser has gained that i feel may be relevant to that new dynamic -- self-confidence in interpersonal relationships, the ability to open up to people, the ability to stand up to people, a more grounded self, a greater self-awareness about himself as a person in the world and not just an instrument, a little battered but having begun undergoing some longer healing processes in relation to his father and victoria (and those prior relationships dealing with feelings of abandonment and manipulation/violence) -- started with ray. sometimes it literally started with ray Very Pointedly Banging A Drum about some of those things

there's a lot that's not ray ofc: his sense of right and wrong, his sense of purpose, his politeness, his gentleness, his confidence in his abilities, his single-mindedness/stubborness, his general lack of propriety (especially while solving a case) because social behaviours don't seem to be that intuitive (or important) to him (although he has that old fashioned properness to him when he's not licking things he picked up off the ground) -- but some core shifts have happened that im curious about how they'll interact with the sort of person ive gotten a sense new-ray will be (more standoffish and closed-off, initially at least, is what i think)

it's very fun to imagine how ray's influence will indelibly be on fraser, even when he's not literally there. i get the feeling that, to me, he's always gonna be the third in the room to an extent, because that's what he probably will be to me as i watch -- he's the first person outside of fraser's immediate family that truly affected him for the better and he did it by just. deciding that fraser was his responsibility, from day two (on day one i think he was still gauging him a little + he needed to make up for accidentally insulting his dead father, but hey, second impressions is what matters the most!) and then he stuck to that remit

and my first presumption/prediction is that fraser will sort of... pay that forward in a way
