I like the idea of phainon being a bit taller than mydei and mydei never forgives him for it. he can't get over it. it's one if his biggest complexes and he randomly gets upset at phainon for it for no reason. phainon doesn't even bring it up or use it to tease him. he knows mydei does that all by himself because he can't ignore that fact, which is even more hilarious to him. he just chuckles in response, which pisses mydei off more. but he usually compliments him on something else to try to make up for it, blatantly flirting at times. and that both flusters and further pisses mydei off.

phainon: *standing next to mydei and looks over at him*

mydei: "stop looking down on me"

p: "ok i'll sit down then-"

m: "DONT YOU PITY ME"

p: *tries to hold it in but chuckles against his will*

Sure! I believe I've mentioned already that Kai is going to a university on the mainland in this au. This is something he had planned for a long time, and was in fact part of Nya, Kai, and Jay's future plans after Jay and Nya got married. They would have moved out of Stiix together to a bigger city so they could all focus on education / better job prospects. Jay's death threw a wrench in things, and since they lost a significant source of income they could no longer follow through with those plans exactly, but the ball had already been set rolling and Kai ended up going alone, with Nya helping fund his tuition.

This is actually a source of discontent within Nya and Kai's relationship. They were both equally impacted by his death, but Kai (similarly as to his canon reaction to Nya's death post-seabound) decided that moving forwards with their plans was the best way to honor Jay. This isn't to say that any of this was easy or that he's coping that much better - he didn't really have much time to process or mourn before he was thrust into a college environment (otherwise their window of opportunity would have closed). It's also not like Nya's job covers living expenses for both of them, so he still has to work part-time AND go to school. Regardless, he clearly thrives better in a city environment than he ever did in Stiix. Nya knew this would be true - this is why she insisted he go even though he would have offered to be the one to stay behind. Still, she can't help but be bitter when he visits and tells her about all the things he's been up to, the friends he's made in school, the successes he's had in following a career path he's actually interested in, and she's........ well, you know how things are going with her.

nico robin and her smile

hiiii ok has anyone else ever thought about the person robin was before joining the straw hats? like who she was when she was at her worst? because i do. a lot. so go along with me here

from her introduction, robin has this very small smile that feels cunning and is seemingly meant to taunt luffy and co. it creates a sense that there's a canyon's depth of difference in power between her and the others.

robin's is a subtle character in her expressions compared to most other major characters in the series. and i think it fits her background of having to work in subterfuge. (???)

she maintains this expression throughout multiple scenes. the same shape of her smile that is so exact that it has to be with intention. this is the face of ms. all sunday. this is the person robin had to be in order to survive.

and yet each one still has it's differences and that's robin being not so perfect at hiding her true feelings (which btw i love that robin will always be exactly who she is). she's stressed or even strained at times. while also feeling perfectly at ease, but still performing a role.

i think for the most part. robin didn't mind what she had to do or who she had to be. because she's pragmatic, but she was definitely bothered by vivi and the strawhats. they're the ones who cause robin to show anything other than that static smile. notably when she is faced with vivi and luffy's determination.

and i've rambled about it once before robin is a kind woman at heart and who has a soft spot for the crew + vivi. their earnestness breaks through her own desire/need to not care for the effect her actions have on the lives of others.

notably the only times robin does seem to genuinely smile is in small sudden outbursts around luffy when something he does makes her laugh.

and throughout the rest of the alabasta arc. robin's clearly uncomfortable with facing the real destruction of alabasta at crocodile and her hands. later revealing that she never planned on helping him obtain the poseidon weapon. she never once smiles, instead dropping everything to focus on getting to the poneglyph.

after that though? she does her miss all sunday smile one last time when she asks luffy to join his crew. it's a famous panel, we all know it, we all love it.

the longer robin was with the straw hats. the more she began to genuinely smile. it's well established that being on the crew brought back joy and laughter into robin's life, that being with them gave her a reason to live again. but it was a slow start until we got to see this robin more often and more freely who is cheered by everyone's bright youth and excitement in being alive in a ways that she never had been allowed.

these are just the ones that came to mind right now, but you can also switch it up with whatever polyneed ship you like.

but something i'd like to keep set in stone, at least in my interpretation, is that shiho is always the one sacrificing themselves for the other. it also parallels beautifully to our main story, when they pushed everyone away for the sake of their friends, not knowing that in reality they were actively hurting those they loved so much.

i think it's similar to how sua chose to keep mizi in the dark about the entire concept of the competition and secretly planned to lose, in what she thought to be an act that would save mizi.

if we take the ichisaki route, then i definitely think that ichika is the one sacrificing herself. she's always cared so much about her gfs, and i believe that if she and saki were in the alnst universe and she knew about the true nature of the contest, she would actively plan to lose just to "save" saki and give her one more chance at surviving the show.

(Belatedly) celebrating the one-year anniversary of the 'Destiny Bond' comic with a rare, fully-illustrated piece. A bit of extra context and rambly thoughts under the cut 🫶💖💕

A little over a year ago, I posted the first part of the Destiny Bond comic, originally intended to be a one-off doodle exploring the consequences of Morty's prophetic abilities on his relationship with Eusine.

That sketchy doodle of mine ended up being a whole narrative project spanning across a few months, before I eventually took a pause on it to focus on my mental health (having reached a low earlier in the year).

It was a daring enough project in and of itself, especially with how I had spontaneously taken it on when I was still recovering from a years-long burnout with 2D art. Though (temporarily) stopping sooner than I had hoped, I can confidently say that this little comic project of mine had helped to rekindle my love for drawing as a whole, and had further lead me to meeting some of the most wonderful people and friends in this small corner of the Pokémon fandom (whom also happen to be obsessed with these two silly guys from the GSC/HGSS games). It's a project I hold dearly to my heart, and one that I hope to revisit and continue once I feel ready to do so; as the story has yet to truly kick off (I'm not even joking we're still in the prologue technically I'm yelling /lh).

I hope to be able to share the rest of this story with you all one day, in whatever new form it'll take as. For now, I want to say thank you, from the deepest parts of my heart, for supporting this passion project of mine - and to assure you to tune in for the future of this title. 👀✨

this literally happens every week but i have a mini assignment due on tuesday mornings for my seminar, which means i stay up all night to do it last minute on monday nights (hence the ugly photos at 2 a.m.😁 i honestly have no idea how i made it this far in my academic career (graduating law school next spring) but.. yeah i got no words of wisdom....🏃‍♀️

Thoughts on the new DMC trailer?

Going to be honest I haven't watched any trailers since the trailer at the Game Awards (or whichever one I have those 2 breakdown posts for) �� I keep seeing the trailer announcements when I don't have my headphones on me, and I've been behind on watching them once I have the time... maybe tomorrow I'll finally get to watching them! Tonight I'm dead tired so I don't think I'd be in much of a good mood and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot, so to speak. When I watch them I can make a write up on it though! Would probably be fun.

2024 reading goals

Let's talk about reading goals for the new year. I also want to be better at checking in during the year how I am doing with my goals, so expect further updates (ideally each quarter).

read all the books I buy during the year (or the most of them anyway): This has been one of my main goals for the past couple of years. I think I have been pretty good with this. I never got to read the 100% of the new books, mostly because at the very end of the year between the holidays and all I always accomulate some books, but never too many, and I generally end up working my way through them at the beginning of the year. Having this goal in mind has made me better at buying books I actually want to read right away, and at not making my physical tbr get bigger every year. It is fundamental for me to keep being as good as I can be with this goal, and I am pretty confident I can do a good job.

read more non fiction that is not uni related: I love non fiction books but since I have a lot of non fiction to read for uni I never really read much in my free time. I would like to read more in my free time, and I decided to keep a very minimal goal of a non-fiction book for each quarter of the year. Of course any book I have to read for a class does not count. If I can get more than one non fiction book read each quarter that is even better but I prefer starting with an approachable goal.

decrease my physical tbr: After sitting down and writing out all the unread books I own it is imperative I do something to conquer my physical tbr. I have done it with my graphic novel section, I can do it with the rest. The main focus is the fiction section, but I will keep track of the non fiction as well. I haven't planned how to yet, but I think my main approach will be to fit as many of the books I already own in the propts of the reading challenges I will do during the year. I might look for audiobook to help me with this goal. Once I'll have a better plan I might write a specific post about it.

get back to reading in French: For years I have been saying I need to work on picking back up my French and this year this is one of my goals. To do so I would like to slowly get back into reading in French. Again I want to keep this approachable so I'd like to read one French book each quarter. Ngl if I read even just one book it will be a win because it will be more than I have done in the past years. For this I will need recommendations, because I only own The Stranger by Camus in French, and no other books. I am thinking about getting a copy of The Hobbit since it's one of my favourite books and I know it pretty well, that could be a good option to start. But any recommendation is welcome. (Note for my future self checking in: even if i read one book each half of the year that counts as enough because I am scared to read in French again so I need to go easy on myself)
