BH remake ch 28
The events of Tessiana throwing the mana stone at Rood for it to hit Manon knocking him out, then have the professors finally open the door for Khan to think it's all Professor Rowell's doing are the same.
...But some of the details on what happened in between have been changed.
In the old version, we also see Tessiana pick up a stray ball that rolled over before throwing it but this is omitted in the new version.
...instead, it jumps straight to Dio yelling out to Rood in warning, so we're just as surprised as Rood is. I feel like in the old version you can see how Tessiana just got the idea on impulse after seeing the ball, but in the new version I feel like you're left wondering why in the world she'd go as far as to do that.
This first exchange between Rood and Tessiana after Manon's been knocked out is also absent:
But ultimately, these parts don't affect the overall narrative very much.
Instead, I'd say something that is felt a bit more is how Rood is more shocked / scared of finding Tessiana here in the old version, whereas he seems only mildly surprised that she's a professor at Helios in the new version.
VS
["She's a professor here...?"]
NGL, I'm not a fan of the difference here. I feel like in the old version you get a sense of how strong both Shicmuon and Tessiana are by how alarmed Rood is. Especially since this is the first time he has been such since arriving at Helios, indicating how someone of her ability being part of the staff here could pose a threat to Rood.
However, in the new version he only seems mildly surprised that someone he saw before at the auction is employed at Helios more than anything else.
As much as Rood being obliviously unhinged has its charm, I feel like he feels too invulnerable and perfect in the new version. Already, the first mission he went on wasn't as embarrassing and humiliating as it was in the old version, so I was looking forward to seeing him suffer struggle a bit more once Tessiana showed up only to get next to no reaction.
At this rate, I wonder how future encounters between them are going to play out. I was glad to see that Shic's dynamic with Blow transcended all time and space, but now we'll have to see how much of it extends to Tessiana.
Already, I think the way Tessiana's powers work have been changed since it the old version we see her specialty lies in speed, with her cutting off Rood and Shic's hair narrowly missing their faces. But this has been changed in the new version, with the moment absent from her fight with Shic and I wonder how her ones with Rood will go.
MOVING ON TO BIGGEST FANBOYS LINUS AND LAPIS
We finally see Linus for the first time, I'm glad his design pretty much unchanged!
I know we already saw him back at the auction, but in uniform Lapis is really hard to tell apart from Rood now...! (If you showed me this picture and said it was Rood I'd just be wondering why his bangs are down!) I think it's because his hair is shorter and less saturate than the old version, where it was a glowy fluorescent yellow. I hope the author can tweak his design so he'll be a bit easier to tell apart from Rood.
The exchanges between the two of them remain nearly identical to the old version, just with a change in setting and an added line of dialogue.
In the old version they were walking through the hallway, whereas in the new one they're sitting in the library instead.
Lapis complaining about people staring at them because of Linus makes more sense in the new version. In the old version, I imagine it's not going to get the biggest reaction to see a student walking around the halls even if it's an upperclassmen, plus you'd hardly be bothered by others looking if you're just walking past anyway.
Here, it makes sense that people are staring if a Hereis is spending a lot of time parked in an area for lower class students, and Lapis is bothering by it because he's trying to study. Either that or the author didn't want to draw the crowds in the dang halls lol.
Also, when Linus replies that "It probably isn't just me" in the old version, it seems to indicate Lapis having a general popularity as a person... further supported by them faceless fangirls at the back.
This popularity was mentioned prior by Dio as well, when first introducing Lapis to Rood.
I found this odd in the old version when I reread, because I feel like this factor never comes up again in the story. On the other hand, in the new version Dio mentions he just has "influence" as a Duke's heir but not implying what kind, and makes no mention of popularity.
And now in the new scene at the library Linus seems to be instead referring to all of the books Lapis is surrounded by when he says it's probably not just him garnering the attention. (And maybe that's why they're at the library instead now)
Yeahh I'm sure it's just Linus's shoulder symbol bringing all the stares to the yard boi
Also, while the new version also typically omits things from the older version we actually get the reverse here, with an added exchange between them. Lapis tells Linus to go "back to his territory" meaning to go to areas meant for Hereis. Linus replies saying "where would that be? the whole school is a student's territory."
I like how it now seems to imply Linus would come over to see Lapis anyway and that it's not a one-time thing because he wants to hear about the Black Magician. Rather, his instant response shows how Linus inherently doesn't care much for the social hierarchy between students and likely comes to visit his Idun buddy even as a Hereis. (Though arguably this is the first time he's staying this long trying to get the story out of Lapis, lol.)
