"fray!"

the armor-clad figure stood at the edge of the pier, staring out to the sea. tart's shoulders sagged in relief at the sight. "you... are you alright?" fray had fled in a pained state, but it seemed to have passed. she stood straight and resolute as she always would.

"you are angry at me." her voice was calm, but tart could not unhear the raging scream that had torn out of her throat. how dare you, the voice rang in tart's mind so like her own. i should have left you to die at the hands of leviathan—it even spoke of her deeds. the uncanny occurrence made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end.

tart shook her head. fray did not turn, but her irritation was apparent. "do not deny yourself!" she hissed. "that will only make you fail to hear the voice in the darkness."

tart was taken aback, then considered before she spoke up. "i was."

"because the maelstorm officer saw me being difficult."

she knew. tart nodded, realized fray couldn't see her response, said, "yes."

it was when the officer recognized her that tart knew she couldn't refuse the merchant out of hand. not when the officer had just saluted her as a lieutenant of the maelstorm.

fray clicked her tongue. "that's all it takes, is it? you're given a little respect—what you deserve entirely and more, mind—and you allow it to drive you to the ground. it is no different than being treated like dirt." fray clenched her fist. "what good is having a rank, kasvert? what has it earned you? nothing but the chance to be spat on for helping others! and you will tell me i was wrong to be angry towards that scum?"

"no." tart shook her head. "you're right, that bum of a merchant shouldn't have blamed us for his broken goods. thank you for standing up for me."

fray finally turned to face her. her eyes narrowed, she scowled at tart before sighing in defeat.

"and yet," she grumbled. tart only shrugged.

"that's what it means to be strong, friend."

fray looked to the side, squinting towards the horizon. "you know there are places out there, where you aren't lieutenant to anyone."

"mm. like gridania?"

fray's glare could pierce chainmail. "somewhere you aren't the hero. where you have no such burdens. we can go there and be ourselves. just ourselves." she stretched out her hand.

tart looked at her, smiling. "then i'll lose everything i've worked for."

"you can only be free when you've lost it all," fray replied.

tart took her hand, intertwining their fingers. when touching fray, the voice in the darkness became audible easily to tart's ears. she closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and listened. it spoke of the hero's ignored voice. one that was unheard yet still existed deep inside.

"c'astarhte," fray called out.

the communion ended. "no, keep your eyes closed," fray begged. tart felt her hand cup her cheeks. "you're so close now. we will see each other again."

fray had vanished when tart opened her eyes. she touched her face and found it wet with blood.
