Music Monday: Latest Track This Week!

Embark on a musical odyssey with Adam Humphries’ curated indie playlist, a diverse tapestry of indie gems that will tantalize your auditory senses. Noisy guitars reign supreme on debut ROWSIE album - "I", out now via Ivy RecRods! An incredible album from start to finish, even if I do say so myself. For me, I just can't find anything bad to say about it because it is just that good. Each track is filled full of electrifying energy, superb rock riffs and nitty-gritty vocals and Americana influences. The album is a mixture which deals with themes like, peace, love and conflict. https://open.spotify.com/album/1vUCgkKi4WXtgQDkQSm0k6?si=dMGnT_uVSMq0OwjMXc2s-g LOUIS AND THE SHAKES - Release cinematic epic "scared." Watch Official Video Today A beautifully constructed video with a diary-style look to it. I like how it's done in black and white rather than color as it looks more somber. In videos like these that I do enjoy is how the basic idea revolves around a single guy as he goes around in his own thoughts. When I watched this, I enjoyed the narrative in that the song is a story about a guy WATCH THE VIDEO HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnURE_rbQEg STREAM ON ALL SERVICES HERE: https://lnk.to/LATSscared Beans on Toast - Releases "Send Me A Bird" Centrepiece || New Album: 'The Toothpaste And The Tube' out 1 Dec I already knew of Beans on Toast's music and songwriting as I wrote about his music a while back during one of his earlier releases so I was looking forward to this, and needless to say, i wasn't disappointed. 01. Full name: Ramona Olivier. but like. i feel like she should have several middle names. Ramona Sofia Cecilia Karelyn Olivier.
02. Best friend: well the only other characters in her universe are the morrises! mikey & dj. thus,
03. Sexuality: bi!
04. Favorite color: mm probably sunrise orange
05. Relationship status: single. i honestly have been unable to commit to whether or not she is a love interest for the morris brothers and am still unable to commit today. uwu!
06. Ideal mate: honestly it’s v important that whoever she’s with has a respect and reverence for the craft because that is a relatively large part of her life and is very big in her family and i feel like. especially growing up in nyc maybe in an immigrant family but at the very least surrounded by people of a similar culture (ramona is dominican!) i think a Lot of people have yu know an aunt or a grandma or someone who really believes in the craft and old superstitions but a lot of the younger folk like. regard it as old people behavior. like the wait you actually believe in that stuff i wanna say is not an uncommon question for her and honestly? kind of pisses her off. we don’t have room for skeptics here!
07. Turn-ons: Always a sucker for a good smile one of those light up your whole face beams. you gotta be a good dancer and you cannot be shy about it either. beyond that i think like steadfastness the concept that she Knows you’ll be standing behind her no matter what is a really big one for her
08. Favorite food: idk probably something traditional but unforch i am not well versed enough in dominican cuisine to tell you what. i will tell you she is a lover of vanilla ice cream and just vanilla as a flavor in general Hates the fact that “vanilla” is used to describe things that are plain, boring, ho-hum because vanilla is such a decadent, romantic, rich, luxurious flavor what is with this branding!! it does not make sense!
09. Crushes: reasonably at least one of the morrises. maybe both. i wanna say. michael b jordan. i’m trying to deduce what media i think she consumed in her youth that granted her some formative crushes. ooh everyone on the cast of victorious. except robbie (too dorky) and cat (too flighty). but beck, andre, tori, & jade. all there.
10. Favorite music: reggaeton, r&b, hip-hop, anything with a strong rhythm she can Dance too
11. Biggest fear: well. idrk what she’s up to yet. is the issue. i have decided that she met the morrises while they were all in high school / some of college and helped them on their witchy adventures. but in the “current” timeline as it exists in my head mikey owns a flower shop and dj lived in the sf bay area working for a video game company and wants to make his own game some day But something occurred (haven’t decided what yet o.o) and dj has moved back home. ramona i would like to say still works at the same witch shop she did when they met (perhaps she owns it now) but i haven’t decided yet oops.
12. Biggest fantasy: honestly i don’t think she Went to college or completed a four year degree or any of that she probably like attended community college but i don’t think she’s ever lived somewhere that is not the building she grew up in. i think she really wants to spread her wings and idk maybe obtain a degree in art history or something with an emphasis on indigenous arts
13. Bad habits: i haven’t given anyone vaping yet. and she’s a new york native. she vapes
14. Biggest regret: i don’t know!!i feel so bad bc she is really underdeveloped because i simply have not hashed out her world the magical morrises au enough to really dive into the nitty and the gritty. honestly i think she comes from a larger family and i’m saying there has to be at least one sibling who said no i ‘d rather not take on this burden of magic and family legacy and kinda left and ramona’s parents don’t talk to them anymore but ramona does and like. ramona could never do that bind her powers and leave her family and just Live Normal. but like. like. she does toy with the idea, you know??
15. Best kept secrets: she probably kept the morrises a secret from her family for a very long time for starters there’s no way her folks would let her high school self run around with two boys but then there’s also the fact that she is sharing a lot of old, family magic with them and her folks would def flip if they found that out
16. Last thought: lowkey one of my Least Developed OCs what i need to do is get a corkboard a bunch of string access to a printer a homie to rubber duck and fifth of whiskey and hash out the whole magical morrises au. hm…
17. Worst romantic experience: she probably dated a white girl at around age 18/19 almost every queer poc i know had some very formative (negative) experience of that ilk. one of my friends met her gf’s grandparents at they were missionaries and showed her their little figurines of slaves like that was a normal thing to have???
18. Biggest insecurity: well. well i just don’t know yet. will report back.
19. Weapon of choice: to be perfectly honest i haven’t even settled on her powers yet. my original thoughts were technopath but the truth is i just don’t love that idea. i am tempted to make her a psychic but i feel like i do have an abundance of psychics on my hands. but they are excellent!!
20. Role Model: let’s circle back on this one
excellent, excellent, okay so: oc asks for dove, the middle prandy daughter (penelope, right?), pei pei and her angel of death li, parker, anddddd ramona! (plus a wild card dealer's choice!)
01. Full name: Dove Corrine Clifotn - Hartfield
02. Best friend: Dency!!!
03. Sexuality: Bisexual
04. Favorite color: cream or blush
05. Relationship status: single (never met anyone worthy)
06. Ideal mate: someone who challenges her, who raises her pulse (because so few can!)
07. Turn-ons: intelligence, but more importantly, wit, social etiquette, class, with an underlayer of mischief
08. Favorite food: probably something you can’t pronounce
09. Crushes: hmm. i wanna say. andrew garfield’s spiderman. elijah the vampire diaries. regina george.
10. Favorite music: Pop, electronica, r&b, jazz
11. Biggest fear: people genuinely not giving a shit about her. it’s fine if they hate her, she’d go insane if they didn’t care
12. Biggest fantasy: to feel at home. she’s always felt like she’s a very in-between-world woman
13. Bad habits: smoking!!
14. Biggest regret: sleeping with that one guy sophomore year of high school
15. Best kept secrets: good luck finding out!
16. Last thought: have i ever told you guys i have a grand plan to explain Why she has no active powers?
17. Worst romantic experience: some guy send his chauffeur to break up with her for him
18. Biggest insecurity: that she is in fact fundamentally unlovable as a person who she is like As A Person is so insufferable, annoying, awful that literally only the devil herself can enjoy her company
19. Weapon of choice: rumor
20. Role Model: she’d probably say some shit like audrey hepburn bitch you are not audrey hepburn
01. Full name: Penelope Eva Halliwell - Trudeau
02. Best friend: idk but i want to say she has a coworker she’s close to. maybe they’re a love interest. it’s tbh. she also might get an angel of death love interest bc it’s sexy and she’s a prue kid
03. Sexuality: bi
04. Favorite color: dark green
05. Relationship status: single
06. Ideal mate: someone who’s like a strong and silent type but is by no means dumb she is a molecular biologist she needs someone intellectually stimulating
07. Turn-ons: Someone who can command a room without saying anything, who just has such a strong vibe that there is no need to bolster
08. Favorite food: probably some kind of soup is what i’m feeling. french onion?
09. Crushes: oof she was probably a damon girlie was always more of a fan of the bad boy that the clean cut one
10. Favorite music: grunge, punk, blues, rock, jazz
11. Biggest fear: idk probably dying and patricia and phillipa “breaking up” because of it
12. Biggest fantasy: finding the link between science and magic
13. Bad habits: hm. i can’t say smoking for everyone. but i wanna say smoking.
14. Biggest regret: idk i’d say she’s relatively sure at some point she will have to give up either the science or the magic and i don’t think she knows what shes gonna chose but she’s still convinced she’s gonna regret her decision
15. Best kept secrets: i would say Almost Every Emotion she decided long ago the brooding silent type was way cooler that the whiny depressed type so she shut her ass up
16. Last thought: she’s the only one who really has prue’s raven hair and fair skin (patricia is a brunette and phillipa is a (bottle) blonde)
17. Worst romantic experience: eh i don’t think she’s had anything astoundingly bad, just embarrassing can’t believe i did that shit
18. Biggest insecurity: idk maybe that she is a walking trope like everyone tells her she kinda looks like a brooding witch which is Exactly what she is and sometimes she feels like she should be less of a cliche but also no it’s kind of sick as fuck to wear trenchcoats and appear out of thick fog?
19. Weapon of choice: i picture her with a preference for bladed weapons tho given her power to pass through things i guess she can just grab people’s organs
20. Role Model: dude probably like dr franknfurter
01. Full name: Pei Pei Halliwell. if she has a middle name i don’t know it yet
02. Best friend: idk. maybe angela?
03. Sexuality: she’s a lesbian i don’t know if she knows she’s a lesbian yet but she is
04. Favorite color: hmm. maybe blue (but i associate her with copper)
05. Relationship status: single but Destined
06. Ideal mate: #REALLOVERSONLY
07. Turn-ons: a good smile, a kind heart, a belief in the good in other people we don’t need cynics here!!
08. Favorite food: peking duck
09. Crushes: jack frost as played by chris pine in rise of the guardians. probably captain america. lots of crushes on safe, nonthreatening, fictional men
10. Favorite music: soft pop indie and alt music!
11. Biggest fear: hm idk. probably ending up alone
12. Biggest fantasy: starting a family of her own
13. Bad habits: tends to shut people out when stressed then get sad that no one is with her
14. Biggest regret: name one thing she doesn’t regret lol
15. Best kept secrets: very good at playing the witch thing close to the vest tbh
16. Last thought: she would not like reading this. if she were reading this about herself she would like like herself in her room and spiral for the next 36-72 hours
17. Worst romantic experience: jokes on you she doesn’t Have any romantic experience (tho i think she gets fetishized a lot by bay area white guys looking for their wasian gf) (so not a romantic experience but still a Worst)
18. Biggest insecurity: idk probably Something about the charmed legacy and they pressure that carries
19. Weapon of choice: you know what idrc if i ever came up with her powers. i don’t know what her powers are
20. Role Model: i wanna say she read a formative young adult series but there are no young adult series off the top of my head that i know so i just wanna say some spunky brave in your face late teen who doesn’t know (oh-oh!) you don’t know your beautiful (oh-oh!) (and that’s what makes you beautiful <3) i always hated that song as a child. like oh does her realizing her beauty all of a sudden make her less attractive to you, one direction? is that it??

VOCALOID LEGENDS - 2022 Part 9
I am... taking a gamble here. I think there is enough in December, but I could be very wrong, so the next post might be really short.
#R-3, U-9, S-2 - Kuuneru Andgazer (Den+Kujira) [Akane, Aoi, Nene, Sutopi-kun, AquesTone2]
Achievement Date: 22-10-11, Upload Date: 19-02-07
First VOICEROID song, the rest are chorus only, not by GYARI to be on this list, and this is on the obscure side of things, well not that obscure, it’s a pseudo-xx song about the girls living after an apocalyptic winter. It has that typical NicoNico eclectic yet cute vibes, which is quite nice. It’s a thing Pepoyo does well, I wonder if he gets here.
#733 - NINA (PinocchioP) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 22-10-24, Upload Date: 13-11-25
A quite a nice ditty from PinocchioP, I think one of his first forays into more light affair, although the lyrics are a bit reflective, it really feels like the transition from the heavy chiptune of RH&C to his more current sound. It also has a sly DECO*27 reference!
#734 - Reincarnation Apple (PinocchioP) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 22-10-24, Upload Date: 22-06-03
Nice to compare with above. One of PinocchioP’s newer songs, I think the two have some light similarities, poppy electronic sounds with deep reflective lyrics, but the production has become much better and more engaging. It kind of grows on you.
#735 - Dokuzu (Nakiso) [Kaai Yuki]
Achievement Date: 22-10-26, Upload Date: 22-03-05
Yuki’s third solo song. While the previous two used Yuki’s innocence, this firmly lands in the transformed Yuki, where she is used as this light wispy voice by people who formerly used v flower, and Nakiso uses her to great effect… People call this a yandere song, but it sounds more like a revenge song, although it does go yandere later…
#736 - Hiasobi (Camellia) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 22-10-26, Upload Date: 22-03-12
Camellia, famous in rhythm games, made this song for a ProSeca contest. It did not win, but it did not stop all the MMDs, but there are fewer singing covers, because this is really one of the songs that only Miku can sing. There are not a lot of those out there, but this song, only Miku’s electronic grating rising tones really fits this gritty dance song.
#737 - It’s A Whole World (Sooichi) [Kagamine Len]
Achievement Date: 22-10-29, Upload Date: 13-09-27
We have a banging bass-boosted dance Len song about the hard knocks of life. It starts blasting and does not stop until the video ends, while Len doesn’t fit so well sonically, the subject matter oddly seems right in line with him.
#738 - QUEEN (Kanaria) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 22-11-01, Upload Date: 22-08-06
Not my favorite Kanaria song from this year, but it does fit as a counterpart. I like the Embellique chorus. That bye bye lady makes me think of Jerry Lewis for some reason, not the singer (that’s Jenny Lewis) but the old comedian…
#739 - Parasite (DECO*27) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 22-11-07, Upload Date: 22-02-07
Another song from the Mannequin and a turning point from the three poppy songs. A return to the form and a nice counterpart. The album is about the ups and downs of a relationship, and this is where we get to the down of a relationship. DECO*27’s lyrics tends to vary but ‘down’ lyrics are almost childish, which is… okay.
#740 - World Faith Revival Zone (Rokuro) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 22-11-17, Upload Date: 17-09-08
Finally Rokuro gets a second song in the Legends. Kind of a softer rock than Slow Downer but still very much rocking. The lyrics are about… what it is about? Man, I am drawing a blank here. It’s not bad lyrics, it’s just… I don’t know the direction here.
#741 - Yoidore Shirazu (Kanaria) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 22-11-30, Upload Date: 22-05-02
Now this is pretty good. I like the vibe, and I think this is the furthest departure from the KING trap that gripped Kanaria for some reason. There’s a bit of a funk going on, I like this almost narrative approach, more akin to his first song. It’s a good song, and I think it shows Kanaria can absolutely write something other than KING.

OC Backstory Week 1 - Family

Which member of their family (including found family) are they closest to? Whom could they do very well without, thank you very much? Why? And how did their family influence their character?
Write a situation with either one of those extremes that shaped who your OC is today!
@yourocsbackstory
So what's the first item on the ticket? Family? Starting with the heavy stuff straight off, huh.
Well there's 7 of us - I've got six older brothers, 4 from one litter, 2 from another. And they're way older like, training to pass Igis older by the time I was born.
Oh yeah, Igis, that's a series of trials recognising you as an adult in Tribe Osinan if you pass.
I've been told I practically idolised my father - I don't know about that, but I do know he was my whole world. Mom died birthing me, so Dad doted on me and kinda spoiled me really - I was a nightmare for Nyss, that's the oldest, to wrangle when he took on raising me.
Well, he took on that responsibility 'cause of what happened during the Apollo XXII tragedy, course. I still remember those events clear as when they happened. . .
"Nyss, Zha'ar, the human settlement is burning!"
Bo sat bolt upright in his hammock at those words. Ethaba was a good two days walk - if they could see fire from the forest, something was very wrong.
"P'rraa was going there," he stammered out. Nyss grimaced.
"Tahlat as well," he reminded Bo. "But even if they run they won't make it 'til morning."
"I don't want them to make it," Bo said, shaking his head. " I want P'rraa to come home."
Nyss dropped into the hammock beside Bo and pulled him into his lap, stroking the soft fur between his ears. “And he will. Rajan, I take it you, Zha'ar, and the twins are going to meet them halfway?”
Both of Bo's other brothers nodded, Zha'ar already strapping himself into his body armour and checking his quirn.
“Aye. The Innah took a sizeable force with her, but they were expecting to defend from inside Ethaba. If the Skytown soldiers have seized the outpost already. . .” Zha'ar's ears flattened against his head and he sighed. “Anyway, Auntie Praha's already mobilising the council to prepare for any refugees or wounded. We'll be two days at the most. Assuming we don't run into trouble on the Cerado.”
Zha'ar checked his weapons one more time, then strode over to Bo and nuzzled their foreheads together. “We'll be back before you know it, little one.”
Bo gulped and turned his head away to bury it in Nyss' chest. P'rraa had said that too. He squinched his eyes shut, hoping that when he opened them again his P'rraa and all his brothers would be home safe.
But they didn't come home that day.
They didn't come home the next either.
In fact three whole days passed before Nyss hurried into Bo's room late at night and shook him awake, getting a harness on his chest – a nip at the back of his neck prompting the instinctive shift to s'hinoian form – and scrambling down the tree which housed their loft before he quite knew what was happening.
Once on the ground Nyss dropped Bo from between his jaws and shifted back to walk upright, but Bo padded at his heels on all fours. Something about the way Nyss moved made him scared. They ran through the Hinnom Forest for a long time, other villagers from Tribe Osinan threading through the forest around them until reaching the forest outskirts.
The open plains of the Cerado couldn't hide the bright moonlight, and Bo squinted, not used to seeing the twin images of Lanae and and Lanaekim so clearly. But after his eyes adjusted he saw the dark smudges which had the Klia'ans all around him pointing and hissing.
The closer the hazy visions drew, the more apparent it became that something was wrong, and Bo jumped into Nyss' arms, peeking out between them at the torn clothes and drooping tails of the approaching group. Only the Innah stood tall, leading them, but even she limped, and when she was near enough that Bo could see her properly, he noticed a small human clutched to her chest.
Rajan, Zha'ar, and Tahlat followed a little ways behind, leaning on each other for support. The twins, Ossu'un and Sh'rah, trailed behind all the others, kicking up the red dust turned almost silver by the double moons.
“Where's P'rraa?” Bo asked, looking up at Nyss, his eyes round and beseeching. Nyss's arms around him suddenly grew suffocating, and Bo shifted back to Klia'an form so he could breathe.
“P'rraa,” he said again, insistently. “I want P'rraa.”
“S-soon,” Nyss said, but his voice quivered and he squeezed Bo tighter.
All around them, the members of Tribe Osisnan who'd stayed behind were abandoning the forest and rushing to the wearily trudging warriors, who clung to them fiercely before continuing the slow march towards the dark jungle.
Bo's brothers came to a stop in front of him and Nyss, and Bo squirmed to get down. He was just about to run to Zha'ar and the others when the Innah approached them, the pale skinned human still limp in her arms.
“Nyss,” she said, voice low and gritty. She smelled funny, like blood and fire and sadness. “Ethaba. It, it is no more.”
“Jason?”
She shook her head.
“Paul? Alina?”
“They're all gone.”
“Even Christiaan?” Nyss said, and Bo hid behind his legs, a little frightened by how strange he sounded. He still couldn't see P'rraa, and he and his brothers and the Innah were the only ones left outside the forest.
“His son was the only living soul we found. We searched, Nyss. As long as we could. I'm sorry about your friends.”
The fur under the Innah's eyes grew wet and clumped together, and Bo cautiously crept out from behind Nyss in the silence.
“Where's P'rraa?”
She nodded her head toward the jungle. “The others took him on ahead.” To Nyss and the rest of Bo's brothers she said, “We'll make sure the rites are observed properly. He was. . .courageous to the last. It's only because of him that this little one,” she lifted her arms, indicating the sleeping human nestled between them, “is with us now.”
And suddenly Bo understood. P'rraa was gone, just like M'rraa. Before Nyss could stop him, he sprang at the horrible human who'd made his p'rraa go away forever, scratching at his face with his kit-claws. The Innah jerked back before he could do any real damage, and Nyss grabbed at him, holding Bo down while he twisted and yowled.
“What are doing?” he hissed in surprise when Bo started biting at him. “The Innah risked her life to save that child!”
“"I ha-ha-hate him!” Bo said, choking on tears that filled his throat and burst out of him. “He took, took P'rraa away-way-ay.”
“No, no, he didn't!” Nyss said, and the others rushed to confirm his statement, hugging Bo and purring loudly as they tried to comfort him.
“It was the men from Skytown,” Rajan put in, “I saw it happen with my own eyes.”
“I hate him!” Bo repeated, and flung himself into the dirt, no longer able to see anything, not even the shining moons through his blurry vision. “I hate all of them. I hate, I hate–”
He cried for a long time, not stopping even when Nyss and the others hauled him off the ground where he'd dug in his claws and carried him back through the forest to their loft, struggling to hold onto him as he shifted back and forth, from kit to child and back again, trying to wriggle away and have his revenge on the monsters that took his p'rraa, his best friend, the person he loved most in all the world.
He hated them. He hated every last single human, but especially the one P'rraa had sacrificed himself to save. Him, Bo hated most of all, and when he woke up, Bo was going to make sure he knew he'd never be welcome in Tribe Osinan.
Never ever never.
Told you were starting with the heavy stuff.
Now that you're all sufficiently horrified, what other questions do you want answered? Not all my stories are this depressing, promise.
(What? They asked! I'm only telling my truth. They're eating it up though. Bet you anything this'll more than double their ratings. Triple, even.
Look, I just said, I'll tell a better story next time.
Tch. Humans, too nosy by half.)

13: without you – ( @theocannon ) @norightwcy ❝everything i want, i have. money, notoriety, and rivieras. i even think i found love in the flashbulbs of the pretty cameras. pretty cameras, pretty cameras. am I glamorous? tell me, am I glamorous? hello? hello? ca-can you hear me? i can be your china doll if you want to see me fall. boy, you're so dope, your love is deadly. tell me life is beautiful, they all think I have it all. but i've nothing without you. all my dreams and all the lights mean nothing without you. we were two kids just tryin' to get out, lived on the dark side of the American dream. we would dance all night, play our music loud, but when we grew up, nothing was what it seemed.❞

S1E18 Getting Started
[00:00:00] Devin Davis: And for the next few minutes, we're going to go way back before any of this was text, before any of it was paper. Before any of it was a book. And all of it was simply an idea baby. Today on Writing in the Tiny House.
Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to Writing in the Tiny House. I am your host Devin Davis, and I am a single father of boys living in a tiny house in Northern Utah. And I am here to talk about your idea for writing a book. [00:01:00] And I am here to show you that it is completely possible. In this episode we are going to go over the process of simply developing the idea before we even need to worry about getting into a normal writing schedule or before we know anything about writing structure or any of that, today on Writing in the Tiny House.
But first, let me tell you about a podcast I recently discovered. I discovered The Writer's Way, which was hosted by a woman named Laurie Wright. She is a best-selling author, and this entire podcast is dedicated around children's lit. So if you want to write a children's book this would be a very good resource for you. Be sure to pop over to the Writer's Way. I will have a link to that in the description of the show notes. [00:02:00] And i'm sure that will be an additional resource that all of us would enjoy.
So I want you to take just a minute and think about all of the different book ideas that you have likely had throughout your adult life, or maybe even earlier than that. Perhaps you had ideas for stories or for instruction projects or something in high school or junior high, or even earlier. I don't know, but I am sure that almost all of us has had the idea for a book at some point in time, whether it is fiction or whether it is non-fiction, whether it is a children's story, whether it is an adult story, whether it is kind of a certain activity for dummies. Who knows, but think back to that special idea that you had once upon a time. And we are going to talk about that.
We are going to talk about what it takes to develop an idea [00:03:00] and everything that you should at least have started. Before you sit down and put pen to paper or start drafting something in your word processing document. So let's first talk about nonfiction. What likely happened was you thought to yourself, I really wish that there was a book on this subject. And you looked around for it and that book didn't seem to exist. And if it did exist, perhaps it approached the problem in a way that you didn't like very much, or in a way that didn't work well for you, or it was an approach that was kind of off base.
And was just different. And you thought to yourself, you know, I bet that I could do a better job with this book, and then you thought about it and then you didn't do anything more about it with writing nonfiction. It's fine if it starts out [00:04:00] this way, in fact, with fiction, it starts out in a similar way.
If it is fiction, you likely saw a book missing. At least this is how it was for me. There wasn't a book that I wanted to read. And so I decided, or at least I read a meme online on Facebook somewhere that said, write what you want to read.
And so for me, I sat there and I thought this through and I was like, what do I want to read? I was sick of adventure novels. It seems at the time, it, especially in fantasy, there are a million adventure novels, and I wasn't interested in reading another one. I also didn't want to do first person point of view. I didn't want to read another first person point of view story. And I wanted something with a more [00:05:00] complex storyline with heroes that mattered and with bad guys that were relatable. All of these different things. I wanted that. And so this is what got me started with writing the book that I started back in December.
I just wanted that book to be available. I wanted that book to be on the shelves. I wanted to read that book. And so I decided to write that book. So once you have your idea, there are a million different ways to develop that idea. And for me, it involves talking to others. For other people, sometimes it involves research and for me, it also involves research.
So there are a lot of different parts. It can be research, it can be talking it out. It can be outlining, it can be journaling. It can be doing a [00:06:00] blog or a poll on Facebook or on your social media or whatever it is. Now that that seed is in your brain, it's time to flesh it out and see if it is worth pursuing or to see if you know how to pursue it.
So with nonfiction, It can be talking to your friends and family, talking to your mom. Most importantly, though, talking to somebody who needs it. So if you are a person writing something on baby care or on raising small children, it would be valuable to speak to mothers who need that type of information or to newlywed couples or to divorced moms or divorced dads or whatever. It wouldn't seem to be the very best to speak to grandmas or people who are no [00:07:00] longer raising children. Or teenagers. Hopefully they're not raising children either. So it's important to find at least a selection of people who would be in your target audience.
Or at least your target customer for that book. And to see if this would be something valuable and discuss it with them. There are reservations about sharing ideas with other people. Like what if somebody rips me off or if somebody tries to steal my idea? Here is the reality of that, friends. When it comes to the premise of a book. Now with the instructional books, it's different, especially since we live in a world that is constantly growing and changing and people need to have specific instruction for some of these new things. But when it comes to other genres like self-help, or just fiction in general, there are.
A million different [00:08:00] formats. There are a million different themes and all of them have been written before. You can find a million different books that have a love triangle. You can find a million different books that are adventure novels. You can find a million books of enemies to lovers or whatever.
These different themes in literature, we call them tropes. You won't be able to find one that has not been done before. And so even if you are talking about your idea in a very high concept way, odds are, you're not saying anything original quite yet. And even if you get down into the nitty gritty of what the plot would actually be.
See originality comes in the execution of that idea. The originality comes when you write it and you yourself tell the story or explain the thought or develop the [00:09:00] concept.
It is not very probable that somebody is going to steal your ideas just because writing is such a hard job to do. It's such a big deal that I personally wouldn't worry about somebody stealing my ideas, just because then they would have to draft your book and then they would have to edit your book and then they would have to do the beta readers for your book.
And the list goes on and on. So we don't really worry too much about people stealing our ideas, especially when it is such a new idea. So you make sure that the ideas appear to be thought out enough for you to get started. It is absolutely. Okay. . If the concept of approaching your book gives you hives that having the entire book planned out is not a good idea.
That is how I am with my books. I don't plan out everything. I simply know where I need to get in each section of my book. I do not plan out the dialogue. I [00:10:00] don't plan out the other things. This is some people call it "pantsing." Flying by the seat of your pants when it comes to writing. Other people call it discovery writing.
And I actually prefer that term, though I think that both terms are kind of dumb, but this is when you simply know where you need to go. And so you sit down and let that organically happen. You let that spill out of your brain onto your word processor. And you get there, you know the bare minimum of where your story is headed and you discover everything along the way.
You don't need to have the entire novel mapped out from start to finish. And I would imagine for most big projects you don't have to, that is why it's possible to revise stuff. I would imagine that even with non-fiction work, if you sit down and start, it is possible that other things will come up; additional research or another point of view or another application to whatever you are trying to do. [00:11:00] Different things will come up and you'll want to include that in your manuscript.
And that would require you to go back and add it in. And so revision is an integral part of every big project like this. So it's okay to just kind of get started. It's okay to be at a place where you think that you have enough pieces to put together those first few pages. And I'm not going to go over the actual writing in this episode, but I will say the first few pages of your manuscript are going to be the ones that you revise the very most, and they are the ones that you will want to revise once you are started. Once you don't have any more than six pages written, you're going to want to go back and revise and revise and revise until those six pages are perfect.
I'm going to tell you that it is not time for that. [00:12:00] Let the future you worry about revising that first chapter or that prologue or whatever you're doing for your book, just because the future you, after you have finished this first draft, knows your story better or knows the content of your non-fiction book better than you do now.
And they will be in a better way to write that really important introductory first chapter or prologue or whatever it is for you. So it's kind of a shorter episode today, but this is what I did for my book. I shared with you guys last week, that for the book I'm currently writing, I wrote the prologue probably two or three years ago.
I had the idea bubbling around in my brain. I alluded to the fact that I wanted this type of a book to be on the bookshelves and I couldn't see where that book was yet. So it was up to me to [00:13:00] write it. But I had these six pages written. I had the premise kind of figured out, how the narrator fit into the story.
It was structured differently and it was fun and it was entertaining. And the people that I brought in and read that first prologue to really liked what I had written. And they really liked the premise of my ideas, how it was all starting and where it was all going. It seemed to be a promising thing.
But it wasn't until last December that I finally decided to tackle it. And the way that I did it, the way that I chose to develop my storyline enough so that I could get started with writing, I went over to my friend's house. And. I brought over scraps of paper and we wrote down names and we wrote down events and we just started to piece together the way that this complicated timeline would work out.
And then other nights I [00:14:00] came over and I brought over my watercolor set and my friend went on Pinterest and started a Pinterest board so that we could get the visuals of what things looked like of what the colors were like, of what the textures were like. And so she was putting together a Pinterest board while I was watercoloring what a green house would look like and what this woman wearing a gray dress could look like and whatever else.
And I had those things, I've kept those things. And then I felt that I had prepared enough to get started. Like I said, I am not the person who will sit down and plan out every little bit of my book from beginning to end and then start drafting. I am the person who will prepare just enough so that I have something to write right now.
And there is a certain [00:15:00] amount of joy and excitement that comes with discovering the book along the way. So that is how I have approached my first drafts. That is how I have approached my story ideas. And that is how I would do it if I were writing a non-fiction book. So let me know what your ideas are.
Be sure to message me. You can direct message me on Instagram. My handle is @authordevindavis.
And very quickly just to wrap things up, I do want to do a very short book review. The book that I want to mention on today's episode is The Ivies, by Alexa Donne. This book is a young adult boarding school thriller of people trying to get into college into the Ivy league colleges. And it is fun. It is a wild [00:16:00] ride. It has wonderful memorable characters. Everything in it was completely believable. It had a nice, fast pace. And for a YA boarding school thriller I definitely give it four out of five stars. Go ahead and check it out, guys. Thank you for tuning in to this episode.
Again, don't forget to check out the podcast The Writer's Way, hosted by Lori Wright. It is a podcast dedicated towards uh, children's authors so if you are hoping to write a children's book this should be a good resource for you. Preemptive Review of Pacific Rim Uprising
So a thing about me, is that i LOVE Pacific rim. It’s great, original (for the most part) and over all an awesome movie, i swear i could go on but this post is gonna enough, so go rent it from a Redbox, or buy it, because that shit ain’t on Netflix!
So with the sequel coming out soon... I have doubts
So what i am going to do is that i will through both official trailers, and give my thoughts and my concerns.
-Official trailer 1
0:01 Okay, i hate this with trailers nowadays but, don’t put a Fucking mini trailer at the beginning! I know what i’m watching, i don’t need to be hooked, i’m already hooked!
0:21 At the beginning, this looks very good, you can’t tell really whats going on, you just heard a siren, with shit like explosions happening, and you see a giant foot so you get a scale of things, all while you’re focused on this girl --witch i think is going to be the Mary sue-- in aw.
0:30 Boyegas character says that they were born into this world, and it makes me realize that this war has been going on for decades! So in this movie you get a look (i’m assuming) into the lives of the people who were born into a world of Kaijus, and Yeagers.
0:41 The theme song! it comes in for a quick bit, but it’s slowed down, which i think is pretty cook
0:50 And then you get “oh shit” moment where humans are fighting humans! And i’m like “yeah, this was gonna happen eventually” also it gives it a bit of a Gundam feel, with the whole giant robots vs giant robots thing.
0:55 There’s a Asian chick in white played by Tian Jingle jangle, with Mako from the first movie, and Charlie day walking in like he’s the coolest Mother Fucker, love him.
1:00 Now you get the song everyone’s gonna associate With this movie! It’s good, it’s just i wish the actually fucking theme song was the MAIN fucking theme song!
1:02 We get a mini Yeager Witch is pretty cool, piloted by the Mary sue i’m guessing, and let me guess, she’s a kid genius?!
1:13 You a look into the ‘cockpit’ and... there’s CGI Fucking everywhere! Okay, a thing about the original, is that the cockpits were real, they were actual sets, and it was quite impressive. Go look up a behind the scenes video and you’ll know what i mean.
1:18 Another cool thing is, in one scene the Yeagers have rockets strapped to the backs which is not free flight, but it’s close.
1:20 Generic line number 1 “Now that’s what i’m talking about!”
1:22 Electro whip! Just electro whip.
1:25 There’s a scene of... *Looks at trailer* generic dude number 12, shooting a gun witch made me kinda weary there won’t be enough Yeagers and Kaijus, but the trailers made it very clear that there will be a lot of them.
1:35 YEAGER SWORD FIGHT!
1:38 They show of a pretty cool battle in what i think is the Arctic.
1:43 Generic line number 2 “I think i could get used to this.”
1:45 It looks like there’s a gun station in one of the Jaegers that’s away from the main cockpit, so i’m wonder if they will be able to move around the Yeager, plus it gives me a sort of star wars feel.
1:57 So it looks like in what i assume to be the climax, that the Kaijus fuse together, a sort of megazord made of monsters, if you will.
2:09 there’s a shot where all the Jaegers are getting ready to attack, witch looks pretty awesome.
2:17 You gets some cool shots and the MegaKaiju witch roars so load, that the windows in the building shatter, giving you a sense of how big this thing is.
2:20 Then you get the title drop and it’s epic.
-Official Trailer 2
0:05 Again with the mini trailer
0:07 Boyega and the Mary sue are in prison, i don’t know if that’s a common enough trope to classify it as main stream.
0:26 The trope of the son of a hero being a lazy partyer. Someone call CinemaSins.
0:34 The mini Jaeger did a sonic and rolled out.
0:55 A Kaiju-Jaeger hybrid, okay that’s pretty cool.
1:03 Okay, there saying someone let the Kaijus back in, and it cuts to the Asian chick in white. “Jee, i wonder who it could be?!”
1:12 I’ve notice that the Jaegers are a lot more agile in this movie, probably for more fast pasted action. I think i prefer the action from the orginal, it was slow, but you could feel the impact!
1:14 Fighting while falling shows dedication.
1:22 Grapple beam! I hope they use it effectively.
1:30 Sending in the mini Jaeger, Like that’s gonna do anything, and if it does i’m calling BullShit.
1:49 “Jaeger pilots, do you understand!” Is probably the line that gets me most pumped.
1:59 Okay, so Saber Athena (or Sabrina as i like to call it,) the female looking Jaeger, because why not, uses a sword, now that’s good and all because it solves the problem of not using it for the majority in the original, BUT a good argument for them not using it was because Kaiju blood, is very poisonous, so using a sword would spread blood everywhere.
2:01 The rocket elbow is back, witch is awesome, because it was awesome.
2:07 A Jaeger is batted across the city while another Jaeger is sliding under it, that’s very anime.
2:20 Here’s a design flaw with the elctro whip, a Kaiju could grab it and swing the Jaeger around the city destroying a ton of buildings, witch is exactly what happens.
2:29 Finally the title appears, and shows Gypsy Avenger using it’s plasma gun to control it’s trajectory while falling towards the earth, it’s not exactly free flying, more like free falling.
TL;DR/summery: If i had to some up Pacific Rim Uprising, it would have to be Mainstream. It looks very mainstream, and that’s probably due to Del Toro not directing it, now due to the original not being a major success at the box office, Legendary Pictures thought it was Del Toro’s fault, witch is stupid because anything that man touches turns into gold!
It looks very anime, witch is pretty good, less of the ‘realisticness’ of the original, and more of the straight up anime Shit.
The Jaegers themselves look very generic, with the only distinctions being the colors and some basic things like some are bulky, one is very feminine looking, where the originals were very distinct, you have the default, the new model, one with three arms, and one was just wearing a trash can and boxing gloves, and they all very well represented there native countries, unlike Uprising.
I like the ‘song’ they keep using, but i wish they would use the main Fucking theme.
Visual it will be a lot brighter, a lot cleaner, and less gritty then the original, and i don’t know how to feel about that, i assume it’s because they’re trying to pander to kids, witch i’m kinda on the fence about, on one hand it gets kids interested in mechas and maybe anime, but on the other hand there’s gonna be some annoying Damn kids when i go see it.
Plot wise, it kinda goes into my philosophy of, that the end of anything, humans will always fight each other, so i’m really curious where the movie goes.
There are some good ideas like the Kaiju-Jaeger hybrid, and the MegaKaiju, but at the end of the day, it’s just too mainstream. i Don’t think it’ll be bad, it’s just i don’t think it’ll be as good as the original.
So i’ll post the trailers below for you to see for yourselves, so you can form your own damn opinions.

Dragon’s 1k Follower Celebration!

That’s right, my lovelies. You read that title correctly! I hit 1k Followers!
First of all, I love each and every single one of you. I never imagined when I started writing that I’d actually make it this far.
When I started, I barely knew how to use Tumblr (if I’m being honest, I’m still faking it till I make it) and only wrote for my own benefit. I wanted to see the stories I had in my head come to life. Sharing them with you all, though, was a way more enjoyable experience than I ever expected it to be.
Without further ado, let’s get this shit started. This will be a two-part celebration. A Q&A and a fan pick fic (kind of like I did for 500 followers back at the beginning- ... the beginning of the month??? That was only a few weeks ago? What the hell. *interally screaming*). I’m doing the Q&A because I’m not exactly a talkative blogger. I answer asks privately and that means you only really get to hear me talk in my author notes, on fic recommendations, or when I reply to anons. I really do love all of you, I swear, I just don’t want to spam you guys with ask answers <3. Please know you’re always welcome to pm me or send me asks! I like talking to all of you.
*Please participate by sending me an ask. Feel free to send all requests/questions in as anonymous (please use the honor system and only vote for a fic once). You don’t have to follow me to send in a question or your fic request, although it kind of defeats the purpose of a follower celebration ;) New followers are always welcome, of course!*
Asks will be posted to my blog, so sorry in advance for the spam!
Q&A Portion
You can ask me just about anything, really, but here’s a list of questions to get those brain juices flowing:
01: When did you first start writing? 02: What was your favorite book growing up? 03: Are you an avid reader? 04: Have you ever thrown a book across the room? 05: Did you take writing courses in school/college? 06: Have you read any writing advice books? 07: Have you ever been part of a critique group? 08: What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten? 09: What’s the worst piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten? 10: What’s your biggest writer pet-peeve? 11: Which one of your fics would you want to be known for? 12: Who is your favorite author? 13: What’s your favorite writing quote? 14: What are some of your favorite writing blogs? 15: What would you say has inspired you the most? 16: How do you feel about movies based on books? 17: Make me choose (between any characters or actors from Mass Effect, Dragon Age, MCU, Supernatural, and Harry Potter universes). 18: How do you feel about love triangles? 19: Do you prefer writing on a computer or longhand? 20: As a blogger, do you have any pet peeves? 21: Do you outline? 22: Do you start with characters or plot? 23: What’s your favorite & least favorite part of making characters? 24: What’s your favorite & least favorite part of plotting? 25: What advice would you give to young writers? 26: Which do you enjoy reading the most: physical, ebook, or both? 27: Which is your favorite genre to write? 28: Which do you find hardest: the beginning, the middle, or the end? 29: Which do you find easiest: writing or editing? 30: Take an excerpt from one of my stories (500 words or less) and ask me anything about it (how I was feeling when I wrote it, what it means for the rest of the series, why I wrote it the way I did, etc). 31: Have you ever been published? 32: How do you feel about friends and close relatives reading your work? 33: Are you interested in having your work published? 34: Describe your writing space. 35: What’s your favorite time of day for writing? 36: Do you listen to music when you write? 37: What’s your oldest WIP? 38: What’s your current WIP? 39: What’s the weirdest story idea you’ve ever had? 40: What’s a random fact about you? 41: What do you do when characters don’t follow the outline? 42: Do you enjoy making your characters or readers suffer? 43: Have you ever killed a main character? 44: What’s the weirdest character concept you’ve ever come up with? 45: What’s your favorite character name? 46: Describe your perfect writing space. 47: If you could steal one character from another author and make then yours, who would it be and why? 48: If you could write the next book of any series, which one would it be, and what would you make the book about? 49: If you could write a collaboration with another author, who would it be and what would you write about? 50: If you could live in any fictional world, which would it be?
Now, the part you’re all here for:
Fan Pick Fic
Here’s a list of possible topics/fics/ideas I haven’t really considered writing up until this point for whatever reason. Send in the *one* you want to see, either with your question or just by itself!
A: A Dance With the Devil 3 (it will be mostly smut-free, focusing on the dilemmas presented in ADWtD 2) B: One Mistake 2 (a dark, gritty sequel focusing on vengeance) C: Monster!Bucky (you decide which monster!) D: Tarzan!Bucky and Jane!Reader (I got this request some time and have been toying with the idea, but I’ve been focusing on WW and Bah, Humbuck!) E: A Night to Remember Sequel (think Supernatural, but more like the first few seasons. You Steve and Bucky roaming around ganking monsters) F: Medieval MCU AU with Feudal Lord!Bucky and a Destiny-bound Reader
If you have any questions, feel free to pm me or send me an ask!
I’d be ever so grateful for any reblog signal boosts!
Once again, thank you so much! I’m really excited to hear from all of you! Please please please participate! You can vote or ask a question or both! No pressure, sweethearts!
Voting/submissions will end Friday at 3 am (ET), so be sure to get them in before then! Asks will be answered as we go and the winning fic will be announced at the end!

EMMA GARELL Releases New Single, "I Wanna See Blood"!
Richmond, VA based rock artist EMMA GARELL has released her newest single, "I Wanna See Blood." Produced by Todd Wright of Halfking Studio in Northern, VA, "I Wanna See Blood" is available to download / stream via The Label Group / INgrooves. https://youtu.be/W9JgrcPXJfc “I Wanna See Blood is a song about love gone wrong, your basic break up song that ends in a bloody mess. Sometimes love lost just leaves you angry...not sad...not lonely...just bloody angry. Break up songs come in a variety of styles, but this is my anger and my response to a broken heart, I hope people can relate. My two previous songs (Destination Anaheim and unreleased Mojo Man ) were more about the rock world in general. It wasn't until I started working with Todd Wright that I found a way to express my inner feelings through my music. 'I Wanna See Blood' is the first of the songs that we wrote together that delve into my heart and soul. ” - Emma Garell “I Wanna See Blood is a dancey jam, alternative-rock track about heartbreak and revenge. For fans of Billie Eilish and Mohawks.” - Dylan Lawson (guitarist for Emma Garell)

Catch EMMA GARELL Live: 02/14 @ The Dark Room - Richmond, VA w/ Halfcast & Moniker 02/29 @ Rockfest 2020 - Richmond, VA 03/20 @ The Burnout Pit - Richmond, VA w / Asphalt Valentine, Rebel Messiah, & Armwood 04/05 @ The Burnout Pit - Richmond, VA - Fund Drive for Declan 04/10 @ KC’s Music Alley - Fredericksburg, VA 04/17 With Silver Tongue Devils at Gottrocks, Greenville, SC 07/24 - 07/25 @ Rise of the Loser Fest - Pipestem, WV Click for Additional Dates & Ticketing Information Emma Garell grew up using her singing voice to speak for her. She lulls the listener into a sense of whispered magic, then out of nowhere, she belts with the power of the greats. Friends have called her Princess of Darkness and Roberta Plant…the truth lies somewhere in between as she takes these influences and finds her own sound. Having a wide range of vocal gifts, you won’t be surprised to hear a wide array of musical styling, all within the power of a haunting voice. If Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was a bar fly in a gritty bar, singing on a Saturday night, you might come close to Emma Garell. One could see her paying homage to the song "Black Velvet" in leather and then fist-pumping the crowd to her Black Sabbath roots. The woman has a smooth growl with a punk'tude and "Destination Anaheim" is only the beginning.- H. Reavis With the release of her debut single early 2019, "Destination Anaheim," Emma Garell is stepping into the rock spotlight with the strength and confidence of her role models and a freshly honed vocal style. Fans can look forward to more singles and a full length album over the next year, as well as continuing to perform locally with the biggest bands coming through RVA. Backed by CJ Alicea / Cody Mausolf on drums, Dylan Lawson / Camden Harrahy on guitar, and DJ Sammy P. Stiles on bass.

The Japanese House Presents a Lavish Yet Intimate Debut Album With ‘Good At Falling’

Photo: Jim Mangan
Indie electronic project The Japanese House is back with her debut full-length album, and you absolutely need to hear it. Fronted by Buckinghamshire native Amber Bain, The Japanese House has accumulated quite the cult following over the years. Best known for her song, “Saw You In A Dream,” which has seen tens of millions of streams since its release, Bain is known for her dreamy, experimental take on pop music.
Since her debut 2015 EP, Pools To Bathe In, she has released three EPs, most recently dropping singles teasing her first full-length album. From its rich production elements to lavish vocal layering and profound lyricism, Good At Falling is a diverse collection of songs that establish The Japanese House as a force to be reckoned with.

Good At Falling kicks off with “went to meet her,” a song stylistically drenched in autotune over an engaging background track. It is grounded by the persistent presence of tribal drums and ends with a moment of reflection as a pulsing synth slowly drops in pitch.
Following on the otherworld intro, “Maybe You’re the Reason,” which was previously released a single is a perfect bit of dark electropop. The vibe of this one is delightfully ‘80s, swimming with reverbed-out guitar. This one is easy to picture being performed live, as Bain sings, “I keep looking for something, even though I know it’s not there/ Maybe you’re the reason/ Every time I try to figure it out, you’re the only thing I can think about/ Maybe you’re the reason.”
youtube
“We Talk All The Time” comes next, complete with an Imogen Heap-level of vocal layering and longing lyrics. Bain sings of a relationship on the outs, changes of heart, and the desire for a fresh start. “Wild” chases “We Talk All The Time,” relaxing into a deep groove a little over a minute into the song. Bain hits the vocal line with a fourth interval over and over again, building tension before being met with tasteful vocal chops.
“You Seemed So Happy” takes a slight detour from the moodiness of the previous tracks, and melodically impresses on the pre-chorus. Seriously—this one has the kind of vocal line that merits putting it on repeat. “Follow My Girl” flaunts The Japanese House trope of popping in and out of falsetto effortlessly. The lyrics outline seeking a sense of direction, as Bain sings, “Someone gave me guidance, and for once I took it.”
The next track, “somethingfartoogoodtofeel” begins with a pool of sound, diving into lush reversed audio bites and effectively creating an otherworldly feel. Between the push and pull of upbeat and relaxed tempo, Bain shows off her vocal range and enlists the ethereal quality of a heavy vocoder.
You might have already heard “Lilo,” as the previously released single has already racked up well over four-million streams on Spotify. The melody is destined to get lodged in your head, with its echoing lyrics, “And Gemma told me that she met someone/ It was the person I'd been counting on/ It felt good, it felt transitional, a feeling I'd been waiting on.”

“Everybody Hates Me” is delightfully different from anything else on the album with jazzy chords and gritty delivery. Beginning and ending with simplicity, the middle section of the song accurately portrays the mental chaos that accompanies self-doubt.
Choirs across the world are about to cover “Marika Is Sleeping.” Melodically genius, this song pulls at every inch of emotion in the human psyche. With a lovely instrumental between vocal sections, “Marika Is Sleeping” pulls off a cohesive flow without a strict adherence to form.
“Worms” comes next, possessing a commercially appealing chorus blended with the same offbeat elements that give The Japanese House their cult following. “F a r a w a y” follows, which has a familiar melody, almost sounding like something from an early Beatles record. The song is short in length but powerful lyrically as Bain confesses, “She makes me wonder what I’m doing, spending all these seconds away from her.”
The final song on the album is a reworking of The Japanese House’s most popular song, “Saw You In A Dream.” This version is far more intimate—the kind of song we all wish someone would write for us.
Take a listen yourself to the ethereal debut album below:
All in all, Good At Falling is everything and more we had hoped for the first full-length album from The Japanese House. Bain will hit the road in support of her album in April, in addition to playing select dates supporting The 1975.

THE EBONY HILLBILLIES - THE PREMIER AFRICAN-AMERICAN STRING BAND IN AMERICA!
From the street corners of Manhattan to the hallowed stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to TV appearances on the BBC and ABC’s “Good Morning America,” The Ebony Hillbillies are a true phenomenon, reviving the lost art form and American legacy of string band music for a whole new generation. Continuing to bring a fresh urgency to the genre for a 21st Century world in need of some deep musical education, the dynamic ensemble – led by Henrique Prince (fiddle, vocals) with Norris Bennett (banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, vocals), Gloria Thomas Gassaway (on vocals and bones), acoustic bassist William “Salty Bill” Salter (3x-Grammy winning co-writer of legendary pop hits like “Where is the Love” and “Just The Two of Us”), Allanah Salter (shaker, vocals), Newman Taylor Baker/Ricky "Dirty Red" Gordon (washboard percussion) and A.R. on “cowboy” percussion kit - are releasing their latest full length album, 5 MILES FROM TOWN [EH MUSIC]. Infused with the Hillbillies’ trademark mix of pop, country, bluegrass, folk and jazz, the full length collection reflects a soulful, gritty and alternately funky, romantic and socially conscious place where toes are always tapping, percussion is slapping, fiddles are jamming, front porch chairs are rocking, banjos are plucking and voices are raised in determination and triumph. Mixing lively instrumentals and vocals over the course of 11 tracks and 3 alternately playful and hard-hitting snippets/skits, the group performs everything from a down home fiddle jam (“Hog”), the gentle romantic cautionary tale "Fork in the Road” and an intimate cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” to the incisive social commentaries “Another Man Done Gone (Hands Up Don’t Shoot)” (about black men and police shootings) and “I’m on My Way To Brooklyn,” which rolls as a lighthearted NYC inspired spiritual until the end...and three gunshots. The Ebony Hillbillies started out on the streets of Manhattan, but their vibe and influence has extended over the years to acclaimed live performances at legendary venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; appearances on the BBC, Good Morning America, NBC, CBS, etc., international music workshops and festivals, visual artist collaborations at museums (including The Whitney with phenom Kara Walker and The Smithsonian Museum), Guest school programs, Foot stomping and Hand-clapping Dance parties and more. In the digital era, they have sold thousands of hard copies of their four CDs – Sabrina’s Holiday, I Thought You Knew, Barefoot and Flying and 2015's Slappin’ A Rabbit – Live! – at their shows and via their globally popular website, https://www.theebonyhillbillies.com/home

Transcript analysis: Bold highlighted are areas to look into, people, theories, questions etc.
Well, this is 2009 (modern) And it's the Bicentenary (200th anniversary) of Charles Darwin. And all over the world, eminent evolutionists are anxious to celebrate this. And what they're planning to do is to enlighten us on almost every aspect of Darwin and his life (RESEARCH DARWIN, methods, thoughts, experiments etc) and how he changed our thinking) I say almost every aspect, because there is one aspect of this story which they have thrown no light on. And they seem anxious to skirt around it and step over it(why are they so in fear?) and to talk about something else. So I'm going to talk about it. It's the question of, why are we so different from the chimpanzees?
01:02 We get the geneticists (an expert in or student of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics) on telling us how extremely closely we are related -- hardly any genes of difference, very, very closely related. And yet, when you look at the phenotypes, there's a chimp, there's a man; they're astoundingly different, no resemblance at all. I'm not talking about airy-fairy stuff about culture or psychology, or behavior. I'm talking about ground-base, nitty-gritty, measurable physical differences. They, that one, is hairy and walking on four legs. That one is a naked biped. Why? I mean -- (Laughter) if I'm a good Darwinist, I've got to believe there's a reason for that. If we changed so much, something must have happened. What happened?
01:51 Now 50 years ago, that was a laughably simple question. Everybody knew the answer. They knew what happened. The ancestor of the apes stayed in the trees; our ancestors went out onto the plain. That explained everything. We had to get up on our legs to peer over the tall grass, or to chase after animals, or to free our hands for weapons. And we got so overheated in the chase that we had to take off that fur coat and throw it away. Everybody knew that, for generations.
02:24 But then, in the '90s, something began to unravel. The paleontologists (scientist who studies fossils) themselves looked a bit more closely at the accompanying microfauna (microscopic interstitial animals living in the soil) lived in the same time and place as the hominids. And they weren't savanna species. And they looked at the herbivores. And they weren't savanna herbivores. And then they were so clever, they found a way to analyze fossilized pollen. Shock, horror. The fossilized pollen was not of savanna vegetation. Some of it even came from lianas, those things that dangle in the middle of the jungle.
03:04 So we're left with a situation where we know that our earliest ancestors were moving around on four legs in the trees, before the savanna ecosystem even came into existence. This is not something I've made up. It's not a minority theory. Everybody agrees with it.
03:26 Professor Tobias(RESEARCH HIM) came over from South Africa and spoke to University College London. He said, "Everything I've been telling you for the last 20 years, forget about it. It was wrong. We've got to go back to square one and start again." It made him very unpopular. They didn't want to go back to square one.
03:49 I mean, it's a terrible thing to happen. You've got this beautiful paradigm. You've believed it through generations. Nobody has questioned it. You've been constructing fanciful things on top of it, relying on it to be as solid as a rock. And now it's whipped away from under you. What do you do? What does a scientist do in that case?
04:10 Well, we know the answer because Thomas S. Kuhn wrote a seminal treatise about this back in 1962. He said what scientists do when a paradigm fails is, guess what -- they carry on as if nothing had happened. (Laughter) If they haven't got a paradigm they can't ask the question. So they say, "Yes it's wrong, but supposing it was right ..." (Laughter) And the only other option open to them is to stop asking the questions. So that is what they have done now. That's why you don't hear them talking about it. It's yesterday's question.
04:55 Some of them have even elevated it into a principle. It's what we ought to be doing. Aaron Filler from Harvard said, "Isn't it time we stopped talking about selective pressures? I mean, why don't we talk about, well, there's chromosomes, and there's genes. And we just record what we see." Charles Darwin must be spinning in his grave! He knew all about that kind of science. And he called it hypothesis-free science. And he despised it from the bottom of his heart. And if you're going to say, "I'm going to stop talking about selective pressures," you can take "The Origin of Species" and throw it out of the window, for it's about nothing else but selective pressures(maybe look into this?).
05:36 And the irony of it is, that this is one occasion of a paradigm collapse where we didn't have to wait for a new paradigm to come up. There was one waiting in the wings. It had been waiting there since 1960 when Alister Hardy, a marine biologist, said, "I think what happened, perhaps our ancestors had a more aquatic existence for some of the time." ( RESEARCH HIM ) He kept it to himself for 30 years. But then the press got hold of it and all hell broke loose. All his colleagues said, "This is outrageous. You've exposed us to public ridicule! You must never do that again." And at that time, it became set in stone: the aquatic theory should be dumped with the UFOs and the yetis, as part of the lunatic fringe of science.
06:27 Well I don't think that. I think that Hardy had a lot going for him. I'd like to talk about just a handful of what have been called the hallmarks of mankind, the things that made us different from everybody else, and all our relatives. Let's look at our naked skin. It's obvious that most of the things we think about that have lost their body hair, mammals without body hair, are aquatic ones, like the dugong, the walrus, the dolphin, the hippopotamus, the manatee. And a couple of wallowers-in-mud like the babirusa. And you're tempted to think, well perhaps, could that be why we are naked? ( Focus on the nakedly appearance of certain creatures etc )
07:11 I suggested it and people said, "No no no. I mean, look at the elephant. You've forgotten all about the elephant haven't you?" So back in 1982 I said, "Well perhaps the elephant had an aquatic ancestor." Peals of merry laughter! "That crazy woman. She's off again. She'll say anything won't she?" But by now, everybody agrees that the elephant had an aquatic ancestor. This has come 'round to be that all those naked pachyderms have aquatic ancestors. The last exception was supposed to be the rhinoceros. ( Look into aquatic ancestors, sea monsters, sea fossils, etc )
07:42 Last year in Florida they found extinct ancestor of a rhinoceros and said, "Seems to have spent most of its time in the water." So this is a close connection between nakedness and water. As an absolute connection, it only works one way. You can't say all aquatic animals are naked, because look at the sea otter. But you can say that every animal that has become naked has been conditioned by water, in its own lifetime, or the lifetime of its ancestors. I think this is significant. The only exception is the naked Somalian mole-rat, which never puts its nose above the surface of the ground.
08:25 And take bipedality. Here you can't find anybody to compare it with, because we're the only animal that walks upright on two legs. But you can say this: all the apes and all the monkeys are capable of walking on two legs, if they want to, for a short time. There is only one circumstance in which they always, all of them, walk on two legs, and that is when they are wading through water. Do you think that's significant? David Attenborough thinks it's significant, as the possible beginning of our bipedalism. ( Footage of animals wading through water )
08:59 Look at the fat layer. We have got, under our skin, a layer of fat, all over: nothing in the least like that in any other primate. Why should it be there? Well they do know, that if you look at other aquatic mammals, the fat that in most land mammals is deposited inside the body wall, around the kidneys and the intestines and so on, has started to migrate to the outside, and spread out in a layer inside the skin. In the whale it's complete: no fat inside at all, all in blubber outside. We cannot avoid the suspicion that in our case it's started to happen. We have got skin lined with this layer. It's the only possible explanation of why humans, if they're very unlucky, can become grossly obese, in a way that would be totally impossible for any other primate, physically impossible. Something very odd, matter-of-factly, never explained.
10:01 The question of why we can speak. We can speak. And the gorilla can't speak. Why? Nothing to do with his teeth or his tongue or his lungs or anything like that -- purely has to do with its conscious control of its breath. You can't even train a gorilla to say "Ah" on request. The only creatures that have got conscious control of their breath are the diving animals and the diving birds. It was an absolute precondition for our being able to speak. ( Look at the video of the dolphins, and how we will be ‘able to speak to them’)
10:35 And then again, there is the fact that we are streamlined. Trying to imagine a diver diving into water -- hardly makes a splash. Try to imagine a gorilla performing the same maneuver, and you can see that, compared with gorilla, we are halfway to being shaped like a fish. I am trying to suggest that, for 40-odd years, this aquatic idea has been miscategorized as lunatic fringe, and it is not lunatic fringe.
11:05 And the ironic thing about it is that they are not staving off the aquatic theory to protect a theory of their own, which they've all agreed on, and they love. There is nothing there. They are staving off the aquatic theory to protect a vacuum. (Laughter) (Applause)
11:29 How do they react when I say these things? One very common reaction I've heard about 20 times is, "But it was investigated. They conducted a serious investigation of this at the beginning, when Hardy put forward his article." I don't believe it. For 35 years I've been looking for any evidence of any incident of that kind, and I've concluded that that's one of the urban myths. It's never been done.
12:00 I ask people sometimes, and they say, "I like the aquatic theory! Everybody likes the aquatic theory. Of course they don't believe it, but they like it." Well I say, "Why do you think it's rubbish?" They say "Well ... everybody I talk to says it's rubbish. And they can't all be wrong, can they?" The answer to that, loud and clear, is, "Yes! They can all be wrong." History is strewn with the cases when they've all got it wrong. (Applause) And if you've got a scientific problem like that, you can't solve it by holding a head count, and saying, "More of us say yes than say no."
12:43 (Laughter)
12:44 Apart from that, some of the heads count more than others. Some of them have come over. There was Professor Tobias. He's come over. Daniel Dennett, he's come over. Sir David Attenborough, he's come over. Anybody else out there? Come on in. The water is lovely. ( Look into these people )
13:04 (Applause)
13:07 And now we've got to look to the future. Ultimately one of three things is going to happen. Either they will go on for the next 40 years, 50 years, 60 years. "Yeah well we don't talk about that. Let's talk about something interesting." That would be very sad. The second thing that could happen is that some young genius will arrive, and say, "I've found it. It was not the savanna, it was not the water, it was this!" No sign of that happening either. I don't think there is a third option.
13:42 So the third thing that might happen is a very beautiful thing. If you look back at the early years of the last century, there was a stand-off, a lot of bickering and bad feeling between the believers in Mendel, and the believers in Darwin. It ended with a new synthesis: Darwin's ideas and Mendel's ideas blending together. And I think the same thing will happen here. You'll get a new synthesis. Hardy's ideas and Darwin's ideas will be blended together.
14:18 And we can move forward from there, and really get somewhere. That would be a beautiful thing. It would be very nice for me if it happened soon. (Laughter) Because I'm older now than George Burns was when he said, "At my age, I don't even buy green bananas."
14:48 (Laughter)
14:54 So if it's going to come and it's going to happen, what's holding it up? I can tell you that in three words. Academia says no. They decided in 1960, "That belongs with the UFOs and the yetis." And it's not easy to change their minds. The professional journals won't touch it with a barge pole. The textbooks don't mention it. The syllabus doesn't mention even the fact that we're naked, let alone look for a reason to it. "Horizon," which takes its cue from the academics, won't touch it with a barge pole. So we never hear the case put for it, except in jocular references to people on the lunatic fringe.
15:42 I don't know quite where this diktat comes from. Somebody up there is issuing the commandment, "Thou shalt not believe in the aquatic theory. And if you hope to make progress in this profession, and you do believe it, you'd better keep it to yourself, because it will get in your way."
16:07 So I get the impression that some parts of the scientific establishment are morphing into a kind of priesthood. But you know, that makes me feel good, because Richard Dawkins has told us how to treat a priesthood. (Laughter) He says, "Firstly, you've got to refuse to give it all the excessive awe and reverence it's been trained to receive." Right. I'll go ahead with that. And secondly, he says, "You must never be afraid to rock the boat." I'll go along with that too. Thank you very much.
16:47 (Applause)
