Do you have any recs for fiction with a main cast of butch women? Doesn't necessarily have to be butch4butch in a romantic sense, but anything that depicts the human relationships between us. I feel like that's so rare, and it drives me crazy as someone who personally NEEDS other butch women in her life to feel sane and normal. I hate that most fiction treats us as male-adjacent stand-ins with femmes or as accessory side characters. I want to see us fleshed out for once.

I’m really sorry that there aren’t more stories easily accessible that have this kind of dynamic. I haven’t actually read all of these , so I can’t say if it really fits, but I’ll do my best to give you some recommendations! Hopefully you are able to find a couple in here ☺️ And definitely check the comments! There might be more suggestions there.

I went through my saved books and the ones I own to come up with this list.

I think older lesbian books in general would be a good starting ground! Especially from like 80s-early 2000s. While some of them might not necessarily use the word butch, they definitely have a lot more gnc women or just none feminine women in general.

- Leave A Light On For Me by Jean Swallows. I’m not too sure how many of the cast are butch, BUT, I do it it’s primarily about lesbian friendship.

- You’ve probably already heard of this one, but Dykes To Watch Out For is always a good one!

- A nonfiction rec would be : Tomboys Tales Of Dykes Derring-Do by Lynne Yamaguchi and Karen Barber.

- This book doesn’t delve into the relationship between butch lesbians, however, it does discuss in parts what you are talking about , from the perspective of a butch lesbian who lives on a farm, which is The Grass Widow by Nanci Little. It has a very beautiful seen between the two main characters discussing how she is still a woman.

- I didn’t know if this one really fit the mark, because I can’t actually remember if the other woman was butch or not (or considered more butch for the time ) but Stonehurst by Barbara Johnson has a section where a younger GNC lesbian gets sort of taken in by an older lesbian for safety and protection.

- I haven’t read it so I don’t know if she has relationships with other butch lesbians, but I do know she is a butch lesbian. Lilac Mines by Cheryl Klein.

- again I haven’t read this one, but given the time period and what it’s about I’m assuming the main character has friendship relations with the larger lesbian community: Shoulders by Georgia Cotrell.

- I started reading this one a while ago but sipped for some reason. I think I remember it being about a butch woman - but at the very least it’s about lesbian friendship: Working Parts by Lucy Jane Bledsoe.

- Untamed Desires : A Sydney Lesbian History by Rebecca Jennings. (I haven’t read this one either but I gave it a quick flick through right now and it seems like it could have what you are looking for)

- Missouri Vaun is a butch/gnc lesbian and all of her books have butch women in them. I can’t remember about their friendships much. But if you want a butch lesbian written from the perspective of one I would go with her!

- The Little Butch Book by Leslea Newman. A sweet little book fully dedicated to butch women!

- Rode Hard Put Away Wet has a butch x butch erotic short story in it. I would post it on here but I’m pretty sure tumblr would take it down right away.

What would Nuala wear in general like what type of outfit or dresses? 🤍✨💕

Everyone, I am back!

And with that, it's time to start answering some Nuala focused questions to build up the anticipation for her casting reveal.

First of all, thank you dear Anon for asking such an important question.

I will start off by naming several brands that are highly connected to Nuala's aesthetic in my eyes and as I see her as a character and of course provide some examples for reference.

Now, I am in no way connected to the Sandman staff and I cannot by any means show or tell what we will get in the show, but as Nuala's fanclub president, I have taken a lot of time pondering on the question. I hope the answer is satisfactory.

Christian Dior (30s/40s):

For this period, I am more focused on the structured silhouette of the gowns and the overall feeling that Christian Dior presented as 'beautiful'. The sharp yet, smooth lines of the dresses make for a good metaphor for Nuala's character. She is soft and kind, however, she does not allow one to mistake her kindness for weakness. There is something incredibly beautiful in that. Of course, one could not simply ignore the fairylike qualities of "Venus" and "Junon".

John Galliano for Dior (1995/2011):

I am not going to sit here and unpack the impact and consequences of the Christian Dior John Galliano era. What is undeniable is the out-of-this-world concepts and craftsmanship that through colour weaves stories. Galliano's clothes talk and so I believe should Nuala's. The focus of her visual should be on telling a story of inner discovery through the outer shell. And her clothes should reflect that. Arguably there isn't a more ethereal way to do this than through a Galliano archive piece. However, I do not think that Galliano could be worn by Nuala. I believe there are concepts and inspirations to be taken from the fabrics, silhouettes and colours he uses.

Thierry Mugler:

What is well-known about the great Thierry Mugler that is well known is that he was the master of the fairy tale. He could tell stories out of this world using only the clothes he made. He also strongly associated himself with the intrinsic human womanhood that he believed we all possess in a dose of or at least we have the eye to appreciate. He was one of the first to draw inspiration, while simultenously involving queer people and women of color. Life was his muse and he ate it all up. Thierry Mugler was what a Fairy would be today. I do not believe there is a designer who would better understand what being a fairy means than him hence he is a perfect person to turn to when drawing inspiration for Nuala. His already fairylike designs hold history and touch on themes Nuala finds herself exploring as well.

Elie Saab (2000s era):

I sadly am not completely aware of the message of Elie Saab clothes. All I remember as a child is how beautiful they were and how nicely they flew in the wind. It reminded me a lot of the Winx fairies and their stunning dresses. Nuala is no Winx Fairy, however, she reminds me of a fairy I now recognize from the way nymphs, samodivas and vylas are presented in classical art. In a way, very reminiscent to what Elie Saab was doing during the 2000s. There is an inherent fairieness to his clothes that would translate beautifully on Nuala and would convey why she is the most desired woman in all of Faerie, even by Lord Auberon himself.

Christian Lacroix:

For the last of the big masters, I present a man who is incredibly complex in his storytelling but his clothes talk for him. He incorporates grandness and soft pallettes for a feeling that truly only upon first glance makes one sigh and think "Nuala will look lovely in that." Correct, she will. The lightness of the fabrics, combined with the youthfull feeling remind me of Nuala every time. And the flowers help too. She is after all, a Forest Fairy.

Selkie

Now, onto some fun modern Nuala. There is no one ELSE that screams Nuala of the Faerie like Selkie. Selkie's entire branding is focused on fairytales and fairies, hence why a fairy such as Nuala would shine brightly in the famous Selkie empire waist puff dresses and would perfectly match say Delirium on such occasions. The puffy romantic sleeves and the ginormous skirt would make for a very princess, fairy, animated feeling in the real world. Something that Nuala may not necesserily exhibit always due to her harships in the story however, we get glimpses of the person she could be when she is comfortable with her surroundings in "Brief Lives".

In conclusion, this post may serve as part one to a Nuala wardrobe masterpost, but for now is a good introduction to my thoughts into her wardrobe.

He learned quickly what her preferred style was and where to shop. She was a 2000′s princess with a modern twist. John grew to adore the excitement she’d get when her stuff from Doll’s Kill came and she would model for him; even though he’d pick out some of the things she got. After that night, he found a sketch book on her desk when he went to leave a new collar in her room while she was in the shower. ‘When did I get her this?’ he had thought. He didn’t want to snoop but he couldn’t kill the curiosity he had. Flipping through the pages, he saw beautiful drawings; mostly having to do with him. Even if they weren’t a couple, they had their domestic moments so she had captured his picture at his calmest points; as illustrated on many of the pages. He also saw outfits inspired by his merchandise and personas in his wrestling career with notes alluding to progress on the actual final product. He placed everything where it was supposed to be and left the room. 

She came down to find him on the couch with the matching green and pink frogs from Build-a-Bear they had made earlier in the day. He was wearing her favorite outfit on him: t-shirt, grey sweatpants, and his hair slightly out of place. On his end, she was wearing his favorite on her: one of his old merch shirts, tiny and barely visible shorts due to the shirt, those little lace babydoll styled socks, and her hair half tied up with a bow scrunchie. That was the moment he decided he was going to make her his officially; no more hiding. He watched her make dinner from his spot on the couch. ‘Now or never’ he decided to himself. He wrapped his arms around her waist as she finished up, “Can you grab the plates for me? You always put them too high up for me, silly.” He did what she asked and put them on the counter, then not taking his eyes off her as she plated everything. She could feel his gaze so she turned to look up at him, “Are you just gonna stand there?” He gripped her hips and pulled her closer, prompting her to put her smaller hands on his chest. “John, whaaat are you doing?” His voice dropped multiple octaves as he drew his face closer to hers, “Something I should have done a long time ago.” With that, he kissed her deeply. When she melted into it, she didn’t feel the normal lust and want behind it; she felt something different. When they parted, she looked up at him with those doe eyes that always had him wrapped around her finger in seconds. “You kiss me all the time, John. What do you mean ‘something you should have done a long time ago’?” For the first time, she was genuinely oblivious; not part of the act. “Y/N, I know we had one rule, but I knew you were special.” “What are you talking about?” He pushed a piece of hair behind her ear, “I mean I am in love with you. Not the superficial front you put up. You don’t have to act dumb around me. I know you want to be a designer and taken seriously. For the past few years, I grew to love everything about you. From the way you scrunch your nose up when I compliment you, which is why I started calling you bunny; to how excited you get when you beat me at something. The moment I saw you at Two Whales, I knew I needed to have you in my life. I know you say I already give you everything, but I want to give you the world and more. I love you Y/N. More than life.” Without speaking, she jumped up and wrapped her legs around his waist and kissed him with so much love behind it. She broke the kiss and they stared in each other’s eyes for a few seconds. “What do you say? Do me the honor of being my only and tell the world about my favorite girl?” Biting her lip, she nodded; “Words, baby.” “Yes John, of course I want to be yours.” He kissed her again and spun her around the kitchen in his arms as she giggled.

Cuddled up on the couch with both frogs in Y/N’s arms as she was in John’s, the two watched Human Resources until she looked up at him, “John?” “Yeah?” he replied looking down. “I love you. I just realized I didn’t say it before.” John smiled and kissed her forehead, “I love you too, bunny.” She also realized that she finally didn’t have to play bimbo anymore and he got to show off his smart girl to the world.

It was a fairly calm evening at the bunker , things were good at the minute , and the bunker was fairly packed , literally even god himself , Chuck was there , sitting around a big table was an array of people, The Winchesters , Castiel, Lucifer, Micheal , Gabriel and God , having a meeting of sorts about …. Angel stuff and how to deal with demons causing havoc across America, a pain in the ass and giving many an angel ruffled stressed wings. Micheal was rambling on about how they could round up the demons and banish them all at once with some complicated sigils but Castiel’s mind was elsewhere . He was thinking about his beautiful girlfriend Y/N , they were a couple you wouldn’t think would match, with Castiel’s stoic ness and serious mannerisms , and Y/N being a complete and utter airhead , girly and pink and obsessed with makeup , but they worked so well together, and Castiel adored her , she was actually a hunter , a fairly good one too, when she had her head in the game , he met her at her bar she owned ran by hunters , while out with the Winchesters on a hunt, and fell in love then and there , he always stayed with her and she always couldn’t wait for him to get home to her, even her apartment was pink! Everything, it was like stepping into the early 2000’s in her home, she had some photos of her and Cas in pink frames along the fireplace and on the walls, he had helped her with that, absolutely adorable. As Cas stared into space , Micheal noticed he wasn’t paying much attention “Castiel are you even listening?” He grunted in annoyance , and Chuck…. chuckled “Castiel! How come you never told us all about your Girlfriend?” He enquired , bastard , he had read Castiel’s thoughts, comes with being God I suppose .

“What…? Girlfriend ?” The Winchesters spoke in unison and Castiel sighed “does everyone have to be in my business all the time?” “Yes” Chuck replied simply as he showed everybody memories of Cas and Y/N together , Castiel blushing and covering his face , one memory in particular made everyone tease him, Y/N wanted to practice some makeup but was sick of doing it on herself and so she asked Cas. He nodded happily and let her do what she wished, pink eyeshadow , lipstick the lot, they were both laughing , glitter all over the apartment, who said makeup was just for girls anyway? They looked so full of joy and innocence , it was beautiful . “Man she has you whipped huh!” Gabriel chimed in and Lucifer rolled his eyes not even bothered with the conversation, typical. “Not whipped … I just love her and she loves me , nothing more , it’s a balance , now if we are done here I’m going home” and with that Castiel teleported away into his and Y/Ns home sick of all the prying eyes . Y/N gasped and ran over to him, she was stunning, her hair all curled , wearing pink high heels , her lipgloss on fleek “baby you’re home !!!” She squealed and lost balance falling over , Castiel catching her gracefully “Hello my darling I missed you…” he whispered kissing her forehead gently, not wanting to ruin her lipgloss “I missed you too!!! I tried to bake some cookies but I uh… burned them…” Y/N let out a giggle and so did Cas “you tried your best love that’s all that matters , come on … let’s try again…” and with that they were off to the kitchen , pink aprons in hand ready to make some delicious cookies and spend the night watching rom coms and snuggling .

The Main Point, February 5, 1975 - you can hear history in the making thats all i will say about that 

Hammersmith Odeon, 1975 - bruce thinks this was a bad show but it has its place in e street history. and it really captures where the band was at the time.

Brendan Byrne Arena, New Jersey 1984 - peak born in the usa tour and the energy is insane 

Nassau Coliseum, 1981 - the new year show! its fun and exciting

Mountain View, CA 1988 - peak tunnel of love tour. i’m speechless about it 

The Christic Shows 1990 - the best vocal performances from bruce 

East Rutherford 1993 - roll of the dice... the end of the human touch tour and appearances from steve, max, southside johnny....and....clarence comes out during tenth avenue and the ENERGY 

Belfast 1996 -  grace & intensity the whole night 

Madison Square Garden, New York, July 1, 2000 - the reunion tour 💛 this performance of blood brothers came from this show

Schottenstein Center, Ohio 2005 - the d&d tour produced some of the most beautiful arrangements and this show is the epitome of them
