He Zike

Artist Statement

The Birth of Roles is a writing experiment processed with a machine learning language model. By using either “He” or “She” as initial triggers, which are automatically completed into sentences, a huge sentence pool is created. The artist then selects sentences from the generated results and combines them into narrations. Gradually, the characteristics of He and She appear as their story grows. Written in a circular structure, the unfolding narration features a man and a woman who talk about themselves and their past, and explore how the system they exist in works. GPT-2, the language model employed, is one of the world’s biggest, trained by a huge corpus from Wikipedia, news sites, digitalized novels etc. In addition to the inherent bias of the English language itself, the resulting narration shows some general patterns of human thinking as well as different aspects and layers of stereotypes. These contribute to the birth of roles.

Two People I met in Hongcheon is based on personal experiences, meetings, and interviews with a real woman and a man in Hongcheon, both spending their last month in this town. She is an intern doctor and he is a soldier, which seem to be typical roles in stories and films. The narration is written in a parallel structure, as if something might happen between them. In reality, though, they did not meet each other, as “I” played the role of a medium between them and a narrator of their connection. This work is about serendipity and identity.

Both works are presented together. The Birth of Roles (on a black monitor) gives a general idea about gender roles based on big data. Two People I met in Hongcheon (on a white cellphone) can be considered a single sample of specific persons. Both works may be similar or very different.

<역할의 탄생>은 기계 학습 언어 모델로 처리된 글쓰기 실험이다. “그” 또는 “그녀”라는 주제를 시발점으로 자동적으로 완성된 문장들의 커다란 문장 풀이 형성된다. 작가는 이렇게 형성된 결과로부터 문장들을 선택하고 서사로 결합한다. 점차 이야기가 길어지면서 “그”와 “그녀”의 특성이 나타난다. 순환되는 구조로 작성된, 펼쳐지는 서사의 특징에서는 자신과 자신의 과거에 대해서 이야기를 나누며, 살고 있는 세상을 탐구하는 한 남자와 한 여자가 등장한다. 세계 최대 규모의 하나인 (영어) 언어 모델 GPT-2는 위키 백과, 뉴스 사이트, 전자책 등에서 가져온 거대한 자료가 바탕이 된다. 영어라는 언어 자체의 고유한 편향에 더해, 발생하는 서사는 인간의 사고방식의 몇 가지 일반적인 패턴과 고정관념의 여러 측면으로 드러난다. 이들은 역할의 탄생에 기여한다.

<홍천에서 만난 두 사람>은 홍천읍에서 머무르다가 마지막 한 달을 보내는 한 여자와 한 남자와 작가가 한 경험, 모임, 인터뷰 등으로부터 만든 작품이다. 주인공은 일반적 영화나 이야기에 나오는 역할들 같은 인턴 의사인 여자와 군인인 남자이다. 서사는 마치 그들 사이에 무언가 일어날 수 있는 것처럼 병렬 구조로 작성된 것이다. 그러나 실제로 그들은 서로를 만나지 않았으며, 오직 “나”만이 그들 사이의 서술자로서 매개자의 역할을 맡았다. 우연함과 정체성에 관한 작품이다.

두 작품은 함께 전시된다. (검은 색 모니터로 표시된) <역할의 탄생>은 빅데이터를 기반으로 한 성별 역할에 대한 일반적인 아이디어를 제공하며, (흰색 휴대폰의) <홍천에서 만난 두 사람>은 특정 인물의 표본으로 여겨진다. 두 작품은 비슷하거나 매우 다를 수 있다.
