do hermit crabs like auger-type shells (long, thin shells)? i'm having a hard time finding price-reasonable tiny shells for my smallest (about the size of a nickel) hermit crab but i don't want to buy something if she wouldn't use it

Anon, I’m so sorry! I can’t remember how long it’s been since you sent this, so I hope you’ll see my answer. This is what I get for looking at a question before work & figuring I’ll remember to answer after… *sigh*

Shell preference does depend a bit on hermit crab species, but I don’t think most land species favor those long thin ones - they’re just too awkward & get stuck on things easily. Unless you’re in Australia or in Asia, it’s most likely that you have purple pinchers, and they like round openings. Turbos are the usual favorite!

On the plus side, there’s actually a great way to find appropriate shells for small babies like yours! Craft stores are your friend. They often have shell mixes meant for decoration & a lot of them tend to have small turbos! :) Joann Fabrics has an awesome green shell mix that has tons of turbos - I have a whole bunch of tiny ones still from buying a bunch of these bags a couple years ago.
