Letters from an American, January 13, 2025, Heather Cox Richardson
With extraordinarily slim majorities in the House and Senate, Republicans are talking about pushing through their entire agenda through Congress as a single bill in the process known as budget reconciliation. Budget reconciliation, which deals with matters related to spending, revenue, and the debt limit, is one of the few things that cannot be filibustered, meaning that Republicans could get a reconciliation bill through the Senate with just 50 votes. If they can hold their conference together, they could get the package through despite Democratic opposition.
House speaker Mike Johnson and Republican leaders have said that the House intends to pass a reconciliation bill that covers border security, defense spending, the extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, spending cuts to social welfare programs, energy deregulation, and an increase in the national debt limit.
But Li Zhou of Vox points out that it’s not quite as simple as it sounds to get everything at once, because budget reconciliation measures are not supposed to include anything that doesn’t relate to the budget, and the Senate parliamentarian will advise stripping those things out. In addition, the budget cuts Republicans are circulating include cuts to popular programs like Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act (more commonly known as Obamacare), the Inflation Reduction Act’s investment in combating climate change, and the supplemental nutrition programs formerly known as food stamps.
Still, a lot can be done under budget reconciliation. Democrats under Biden passed the 2021 American Rescue Plan and the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act under reconciliation, and Republicans under Trump passed the 2017 Trump tax cuts the same way.
A wrinkle in those plans is the Republicans’ hope to raise the national debt limit. As soon as they take control of Congress and the White House, Republicans will have to deal immediately with the treasury running up against the debt limit, a holdover from World War I that sets a limit on how much the country can borrow. Although he has complained bitterly about spending under Biden, Trump has demanded that Congress either raise or abandon the debt ceiling because the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the tax cuts he wants to extend will add $4.6 trillion to the deficit over the next ten years, and cost estimates for his deportation plans range from $88 billion to $315 billion a year.
Republicans are backing away from adding a debt increase to the budget reconciliation package out of concern that members of the far-right Freedom Caucus will kill the entire bill if they do. Those members want no part of raising the national debt and have demanded $2 trillion in budget cuts before they will consider it. Tonight, Senate majority leader John Thune (R-SD) told Jordain Carney of Politico that Senate Republicans expect the debt limit to be stripped out of the budget reconciliation measure.
So Republicans are currently exploring the idea of leveraging aid to California for the deadly fires in order to get Democrats to sign on to raising the debt ceiling. Meredith Lee Hill of Politico reported that Trump met with a group of influential House Republicans over dinner Sunday night at Mar-a-Lago to discuss tying aid for the wildfires to raising the debt ceiling. Today, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) confirmed to reporter Hill that this plan is under discussion.
Indeed, Republicans have been in the media suggesting that disaster aid to Democratic states should be tied to their adopting Republican policies. The Los Angeles fires have now claimed at least 24 lives. More than 15,000 firefighters are working to extinguish the wildfires, which have been driven by Santa Ana winds of up to 98 miles (158 km) an hour over ground scorched by high temperatures and low rainfall since last May, conditions caused by climate change.
On the Fox News Channel today, Representative Zach Nunn (R-IA) said: "We will certainly help those thousands of homes and families who have been devastated, but we also expect you to change bad behavior. We should look at the same for these blue states who have run away with a broken tax policy.... Those governors need to change their tune now.” Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) blamed Democrats for the fires and said of federal disaster relief: “I certainly wouldn't vote for anything unless we see a dramatic change in how they're gonna be handling these things in the future.”
Aside from the morality of demanding concessions for disaster aid after President Joe Biden responded with full and unconditional support for regions hit by Hurricane Helene (although Tennessee governor Bill Lee is still lying that Biden delayed aid to his state, when in fact he delayed in asking for it, as required by law), there is a financial problem with this argument.
As economist Paul Krugman noted today in his Krugman Wonks Out, California “is literally subsidizing the rest of the United States, red states in particular, through the federal budget.”
In 2022, the most recent year for which information is available, California paid $83 billion more to the federal government than it got back. Washington state also subsidized the rest of the country, as did most of the Northeast. That money flowed to Republican-dominated states, which contributed far less to the federal government than they received in return.
Krugman noted that “if West Virginia were a country, it would in effect be receiving foreign aid equal to more than 20 percent of its G[ross] D[omestic] P[roduct].” Krugman refers to the federal government as “an insurance company with an army,” and he notes that there is “nothing either the city or the state could have done to prevent” the wildfires. “If the United States of America doesn’t take care of its own citizens, wherever they live and whatever their politics, we should drop “United” from our name,” he writes. “As it happens, however, California—a major driver of U.S. prosperity and power—definitely has earned the right to receive help during a crisis.”

The Tata Punch EV, launched in January 2024, marked a significant milestone for Tata Motors, being their first electric vehicle built on the new Act. EV architecture. Offered in two battery pack options – 25 kWh and 35 kWh – the Punch EV promises a range of 315 km and 421 km respectively. But how does this translate to real-world situations, particularly when it comes to charging? We put the long-range variant (35 kWh) to the test to see how long it takes to recharge a depleted battery. Tata Punch EV Long-Range Demystifying Charging Speeds: Understanding the Numbers The long-range Tata Punch EV boasts support for up to 50 kW DC fast charging. However, during our test, we utilized a 120 kW charging station. It's crucial to remember that the car will only charge at the speed it's designed for, regardless of the station's maximum output. So, what did the test reveal? Let's delve into the data. State of Charge vs. Charging Rate and Time Taken We plugged in the Punch EV with a 0% state of charge (SOC) reading on the instrument cluster. Initially, the charging rate started at 18 kW, rising to 25 kW after reaching 5%. This 25 kW rate remained consistent until the battery reached 95% SOC. At this point, we decided to disconnect the charger. Key Takeaways from the Charging Test: It took the Punch EV a total of 78 minutes to charge from 1% to 95% SOC, translating to a little over an hour. Beyond 95% SOC, the charging rate dropped back to 18 kW, suggesting a further 15-20 minutes would be needed to reach a full 100% charge. Taking these factors into account, a realistic charging time for 0% to 100% is likely to exceed 1.5 hours. Comparing Claims to Reality: The 10-80% Benchmark Tata Motors advertises a 56-minute DC fast charging time (10% to 80%) for the long-range Punch EV. Our test results mirrored this claim, with the battery reaching 80% from 10% in approximately the same timeframe. Why Does Charging Speed Slow Down at Higher SOC Levels? Most EVs, including the Punch EV, experience a reduction in charging speed as the battery reaches higher states of charge (around 80% or 90%). This phenomenon is primarily due to battery heat generation. To safeguard battery health and prevent overheating, the car's charging system automatically reduces the charging rate. Optimal Charging Practices for a Healthy Battery Understanding this concept is crucial for maximizing battery life and performance in your Tata Punch EV. Here are some key takeaways: Maintain the battery SOC within the recommended range of 10% to 90%. Avoid letting the battery drain completely to 0% or consistently charging it to 100%. Similar to smartphones, some EVs, including the Punch EV (potentially through software updates), might offer a feature to set a charging limit. This allows you to determine the maximum SOC you desire the car to reach when plugged in overnight. FAQs: Q: How does the charging time for the Punch EV Long Range compare to other electric vehicles in its segment? A: Charging times can vary depending on the battery size, charging infrastructure used, and weather conditions. However, the Punch EV's charging time falls within the typical range for compact electric SUVs with similar battery capacities. Q: Can I charge the Punch EV at home? A: Yes, the Punch EV likely supports slow charging using a compatible home charging station (typically a 7.2 kW AC charger). While slower than DC fast charging, home charging is a convenient option for overnight charging. Q: Are there any special considerations when charging the Punch EV at home? A: It's advisable to consult your user manual for specific recommendations on home charging. Generally, ensure a proper electrical connection and avoid exceeding the recommended amperage for your home circuit. Additionally, consider the charging time required to reach your desired SOC level and plan accordingly. Q: Does the Tata Punch EV app offer any features related to charging? A: The availability of specific features might vary depending on the variant and software version. However, many modern EVs, including the Punch EV (potentially), offer features like remote monitoring of charging status, scheduling charging sessions (particularly beneficial for taking advantage of off-peak electricity rates), and receiving notifications when charging is complete.

Elon Musk comments on anti-Tesla fund losing 68% of investors money
Tumblr media
P.S. Very good news: Anti-Tesla fund goes belly up...! Oil industry magnates and Kremlin paid propagandists still don't understand that they lost the war against EVs already in August 2016, when Tesla announced the arrival of Tesla Model S P100D with a 100 kWh battery and 315 miles (507 km) of range...!
That day, I began following the growth of electric car technology and the EV market on a regular basis.
The rationale for my interest was simple: If one engineering team has created a mass-produced 300+ mile electric car, sooner or later the same engineering team or another will create the next better and cheaper electric car, and so on, the engineering challenge and competition is launched, and it's only a matter of time before all there will be a LOT of ELECTRIC CARS on the streets in all countries of the world...
I started really closely following the oil market analysts and Wall Street stock experts, but it soon became clear that these "experts" serving the interests of "big oil" DO NOT KNOW OR UNDERSTAND ANYTHING AT ALL about what is happening in the field of electric car manufacturing technology and THEY HAVE NO IDEA what will happen in the car market, and then I discovered Tony Seba and his research work on new technologies displacing old ones…and he was right...EV market facts, real ones told everything what you need to know...!!!
All those who bet against EVs will lose heavily and catastrophically...

I think a lot of people underestimate just how strong Lady Nagant is.
Let’s start from the obvious.
Nagants range is 3 km (I’ll add her feats from 378-379 at the end this is first part is what we know as of 311-315) she can make numerous types of bullets even curving ones. (I have a feeling she has more than just that maybe exploding ones or shot gun shells?)
She is also prepared for things to come up close. Not only that but she’s smart. She went into fight Izuku without all of the vital information (pretty much blind as she wouldn’t know anything about him due to no information being allowed to slip into Tartarus) and still managed to hold her own. And had to hold back because she needed to bring him in alive.
Additionally we know she was holding back even more, Izuku said so himself.
Moving onto probably the ones people missed..Izuku even after all of that needed to go to 100% to beat her. No it was not 45% Izuku that beat her but 100%.
Next is that we know she never missed..she had been likely sent after some very high class villains with her assassination work. (Another note she was sent after all for one)
Another overlooked panel was that she was shocked..when her rifle was broken she said that whenever she fought someone what happened next was fate.
Allow me to reword this..whenever she usually fights someone she always comes out on top. And it took 100% Izuku to stop her. Need more?
The HPSC sent her after All For One with confidence..she talked to him like she didn’t care I’m betting the trauma was some of this but not all..she doesn’t fear him whatsoever.
In 379 all for one flipped when she showed up and none of the other people that could betray him (aoyama) had bombs planted in them.
Now this is borderline headcanon but can be implied if we put the pieces together..All For One fears Nagant and he knows if she were to join the hero side the battle would swing in their favor.
Why wouldn’t he? She can kill anyone if she gets the jump on them. Literally anybody. I’m not even kidding if she gets the first shot off and she’s aiming to kill it’s over.
Even if people knew none short of 100% Izuku is gunna be able to dodge that. Hawks feared her and for good reason.
The only counter is danger sense, and that’s premonition quirk. Most people if they knew the shot was coming wouldn’t be able to dodge because they are not faster than a bullet the only person faster than a bullet is prime All Might and 100% Izuku.
With airwalk she’s on another level entirely..and is fast enough to keep up with 45% Izuku id say she’s just a bit slower than that.
Now imagine this she’s moving at speeds comparable to 45% Izuku and is shooting at you. If she aims to kill it’s over..
Now onto the stuff from 379.
It was like 200 km away from where she shot. Which is just insane.
Her willpower is also insane she was exploded from the inside out and was still cognizant enough to relay information.
She marched onto that roof when she was on deaths door and shot her rifle which practically reopened every single one of her wounds and still managed to get three shots off.
I also mentioned her intelligence but she has to calculate her trajectory (plus curve wind conditions etc) and manages to be insanely accurate even at night when it’s raining.
Additionally she was also this powerful even after being in jail for 15 years in complete solitary confinement.
Her bullets are also insane as she managed to damage Shigarakis hand and tear it right off.
I’m willing to bet she surrendered back then because pretty much none would be able to take her down if she went full villain.
If she were to ever fully dedicate herself to becoming a villain well the series wouldn’t have happened lmao.
I might be over exaggerating some things but this is just my observations everyone is entitled to their own opinion I just want people to consider what I have to say.

First Look: The New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS
When 500 PS (368 kW) from a high-revving mid-mounted engine meets a purist 1,415 kg curb weight, it is time for the term ‘driving pleasure‘ to be redefined: the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the new flagship model in the 718 family – an uncompromising driver’s car designed to impress with its lightweight construction, extremely agile chassis set-up, sophisticated aerodynamics and unique soundtrack. Whether it is being driven on narrow, winding mountains roads or closed race tracks, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS is king of the compact mid-engined range. On the Nordschleife, it outperforms its sibling, the 718 Cayman GT4, by more than 23 seconds.
The naturally aspirated flat-six engine, familiar from the 911 GT3 Cup racing car and the 911 GT3 series production model, forms the centerpiece of a sports car that has been designed for maximum driving pleasure. The engine revs as high as 9,000 rpm. Compared to the 718 Cayman GT4, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS has an extra 80 PS (59 kW), resulting in a weight-to-power ratio of 2.83 kg/PS. Maximum torque has been increased from 430 to 450 Nm.
Among the striking features of the new, top-of-the-range 718 are the process air intakes behind the driver and passenger windows. The 718 Cayman normally has small side windows here. The new air intakes improve both the intake airflow and, at the same time, create a thrilling intake noise right next to the occupants' ears. The characteristic air intakes in front of the rear wheels have been retained and are used for engine cooling.
Like every modern RS model, the new 718 GT4 RS is exclusively available with the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK). This gearbox shifts through its seven gears at lightning speed and guarantees maximum performance. The gearshift paddles allow drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel even when changing gear manually. Alternatively, they can use the re-designed selector lever on the center console.
The sports low-ratio PDK underpins the incredible acceleration of this mid-engined sports car. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds (GT4 with PDK: 3.9 seconds) and has a top speed of 315 km/h (GT4 with PDK: 302 km/h), which it reaches in seventh gear.
In typical RS style, lightweight construction is a defining element of the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS design. The two-seater weighs only 1,415 kilograms, with a full fuel tank and without a driver as defined by the DIN standard, which is 35 kg less than a PDK-equipped 718 GT4. This weight reduction is achieved thanks to the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) for components such as the bonnet and front wings. Lightweight carpets also save weight, as does reducing the amount of insulation material. The rear window is made of lightweight glass. Lightweight door panels with textile opening loops and nets on the storage compartments complete the quest to eliminate every superfluous gram.
The new fixed rear wing, its swan-neck attachment and aluminum wing supports, are a distinctive element of the exterior design. This highly efficient wing principle is derived from the Porsche 911 RSR GT racing car and was first adopted in a Porsche series production car with the 911 GT3. In combination with the 30-millimetre-lower ride height compared to the 718 Cayman, the eye-catching vents on the front wheel arches, the aerodynamically optimized underbody paneling with connected rear diffuser, the multi-adjustable front diffuser and the new front spoiler lip with flow-around side blades, in the Performance mode reserved for use on race tracks the GT4 RS generates approximately 25 per cent more downforce than the GT4.
Modifications to the chassis also contribute to its greater performance. Ball joints bind the chassis tightly to the body to deliver even more precise and direct handling. The adjustable, circuit-ready chassis has an RS-specific shock absorber set-up, as well as modified spring and anti-roll bar rates.
The optional Weissach package takes the dynamic design of the GT4 RS even further. The front luggage-compartment lid, process air intakes, cooling air intakes, airbox cover, exterior mirror upper trims and rear wing have a carbon-weave finish. The titanium tailpipes look similar to the exhaust system on the Porsche 935. The fitted roll cage at the rear is also made of titanium. The upper section of the dashboard is upholstered in Race-Tex material and a large Porsche logo is integrated into the rear window. With the Weissach package 20-inch forged magnesium wheels can be ordered at additional cost instead of the 20-inch forged aluminum wheels.
All of these enhancements compared to the 718 Cayman GT4 make the GT4 RS the most uncompromising and sharpest member of the 718 family. This is particularly evident on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. During the final phase of set-up adjustments, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister lapped the 20.832-kilometre track in 7:09.300 minutes. The GT4 RS conquered the shorter 20.6 km version, which previously served as the benchmark, in 7:04.511 minutes – 23.6 seconds faster than the 718 Cayman GT4.
The unique Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS, created by Porsche Design exclusively for buyers of the vehicle, is as dynamic as its four-wheeled counterpart. The watch also benefits from a lightweight design concept with high-performance features based on the robust, high-tech characteristics of titanium. Its winding rotor is modelled on the sports car’s rims and can be specified in different colors, just like the car.
The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is celebrating its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show and can now be ordered at a base price of 141,338 euros (including 19 per cent VAT). Delivery begins in December. In addition, the GT4 RS is available with the optional Weissach package to further enhance its aerodynamics. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport racing version is also celebrating its premiere in Los Angeles, and it will be launched in several national and international racing series starting in 2022.
