Why are they trying to turn him into the stereotype of a white manhero, I'm-

Just read the 167 update and felt the need to go back and reread this scene in the novel because something I recalled wasn't shown in the webtoon at all. Fun.

Here's how the Iris scene goes in the novel:

If you've seen the 167 webtoon adaptation, you'll notice that:

1) Yoo Joonghyuk appears to be way angrier at kdj than he was originally in the novel. The novel also makes a point to mention that he's actually more worried than angry about him dying and the shin yoosung egg thing.

2) webtoon felt the need to add "this idiot" instead of just saying "his nickname is" because hahaha he angy or whatever. Again, he doesn't actually hate Dokja???? But for some reason the translators are convinced that he does 😭 guys I promise he wasn't this angry originally idk what happened here

3) As seen in the image above, Yoo Joonghyuk even supports dokja and is visibly on his side when Iris starts getting aggressive/annoying with Kim Dokja. Webtoon makes him seem like he's bullying KDJ alongside the western incarnations 💀 (he's not)

4) did. Did I mention that he's not actually as angry as they make him seem in the webtoon??? Because he really is not 💀 like sure he's "KDJ you fool" this and "everyone's been worried sick about you" that but he's also the first to defend KDJ if something goes wrong. And they conveniently glossed over the ONE thing in this scene that would make that apparent :) *screams*

sometimes I feel extremely trapped when it comes to how I write my characters, especially poc ones. I certainly dontcome from the diversity capital of the world (Ireland. Have you fucking Seen Ireland) so I do my best to listen to people who are talking about their frustrations when it comes to representation, but the mixed messages are very confusing. it’s. It’s infuriating!

“There’s a problem with masculinizing black women in fandom” “there’s a problem with infantalizing black women in fandom” “everyone makes female characters the ‘mom’ of the group” “everyone always makes female characters snarky badasses” and. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO! I have tried making her soft. i have tried making her hard. I have tried making her strong, making her weak, but at the end of the day, nobody can seem to agree on what’s ‘subversive’ and ‘empowering’ anymore, so I’m just gonna do what’s interesting, I think. She’s a narrative foil. She has a role in the plot— this interpretation complements the role I believe she plays, and it makes my brain happy. I’m going to crawl in a hole and scream. Someone tell me what the fuck I’m supposed to do, please?

I want to get this right, I want to do this properly. But if nobody can tell me how, I’m just gonna go with what’s right for the story, okay??

i think the crux of my frustration over buck's treatment by other characters during the breakup era is that: instead of treating him like the baby of the 118 they're just straight up treating him like a baby - someone who doesn't know how he feels or what direction to turn so they tell him to just forget about his devastating heartbreak and move on already like it's so simple easy peasy you'll be fine. it's also how he's been written: like he doesn't know his own heart and is too clueless to follow it or think things through.

also the total lack of queer solidarity on hen's part for her dumped bisexual friend (a henren scene would've been spectacular) is a glaring issue, and the repeated belittling or ignoring of buck's feelings by all - like when he was freaking out over maybe killing gerrard and we were thrust into bizarro world dance party mode (not that i don't love the zaney elements of the show, but read the room and moreover this keeps happening to buck like instead of enrichment in his hamster wheel enclosure his loved ones are spinning the fucking wheel).

most of the episodes in 8A were poorly written with unnecessary or bland or overstuffed or speedrun dramatic plot and mismanaged character studies.

where has the heart gone? where are the meaningful character rich conversations and insightful storylines that show them as 3dimensional and why tf have they been replaced by cheap cringey laughs and flippant tones that repeatedly miss the mark? where are our beloved supporting characters? why did they fumble so much angsty potential with established characters? who tf traded that for brad on centrestage?

i could go on, but i won't. i'm venting this before bed. we all get the gist. wtf is going on???

This def more than five 😭 but bear with me

First one:

I just think the lighting and posing turned out SO WELL. The vibes, the glows, all that. It makes this art so interesting to look at. And having the trees be aspen trees instead of the generic trees I do help a LOT. Def one of the best illustrations I’ve done and I’ve been trying to recreate the vibes ever since :)) also the fanfiction I like. I like the first one more but this one is good as well. Good vibes! I want to do more illustrations for my fics.

I just love the rendering so so much. I cant tell you how proud I am. The hair didn’t turn out how I wanted it too but everything else? Perfect. The eyes contrast each other so much which is exactly what I was going for. And I just said that the hair didn’t turn how I liked, but I’m talking about the blue part. I wanted there to be more contrast between the glowing part and the not glowing part, but you can’t see it well. But the rest of the hair?? It looks so good. Everything has its place. I don’t have good brushes to look like hair so I kinda just do things to make it look like hair and I think it turned out good. Now recreating the vibes here is… hard 😭 I do wish I made his nose more flat tho cuz his nose doesn’t look that bumpy, but oh well.

Ofc any good drawing of Linebeck I like. The lighting is fun, the eyepatch is fun, and it’s my baby girl so I like it. Obviously I liked it enough to make it my PFP XD

I bunched these two togehter but I like them. The vibes of Poseidon and Zeus are great, the lighting, the composition, I like it a lot. Particular the Poseidon one. I like how he turned out with the angle and everything, and I liked how Ody turned out. In the Zeus one he’s a little flat but he’s very 3dimensional in the Poseidon one. Tho Poseidon’s trident is a little… quirky…

And I love how the lighting turned out on this. I like the very harsh white light in some art pieces and so I tried to implement that and I think it turned out good. The contrast between the light and the shadow is good, and I love the red bounce light. Bounce light is just my fav thing to add so. Unfortunately the sea serpent didn’t turn out that good. The dramatic lighting isn’t there :( but overall I like it

It fascinates me that in this entire conflict with Flame we have this battle between c and cc mindsets and motivations that are so interconnected that the story only exists through the blend of both. 

MAPICC: “I don't care bro. He can't just get away with anything he wants to because he’s Flamefrags. I actually don't care” 

It is so cool how it’s BOTH:

“the villain of the server can’t just get away with anything he wants because he’s the villain” 

AND 

“Flamefrags the person can’t just get away with anything he wants because he’s Flame” 

One is a fully justifiable, and even honorable, story motive: to stop the evil rampage of the evil villain, 

the other is a respect and learning moment for a real person to learn that you have to work with others and not steamroll because you think you have the right to whatever your idea is. 

It is so fully both of that at the same time. 

Flame does it too, he met the story as a story; he said specifically to Zam in DM’s that he’s leaning into a character with blowing up spawn. 

But then when it comes down to it, it’s his video and he just wants to make it, and he's willing to hold the whole server hostage to do so.

He takes both to be true, though he disagrees that the second reason is any justification to oppose him, which is the whole point to what Mapicc is doing. Mapicc is trying to teach him that his actions have consequences and you have to embrace them WHILE doing your video, not separate your video from your actions.  

And that, on a greater level, lifesteal is never about just you, it’s about who you team with and about the server as a whole. Every interaction matters. 

And Mapicc fully embraces that actions have consequences and that he’s going to get shit for blowing things up because now people can say of him, “Mapicc can’t just get away with anything he wants because he’s Mapicc”. He thinks he's in the right, and flame deserved it, but as they walk around the destroyed castle he reflects saying, “yea and then when I cancel the duel I’m the dickhead. Well I mean, no what I did-” and doesn't finish the thought. But he gets it.

And THAT’S what makes lifesteal so interesting.

It’s not just an unscripted story, it’s other people continuing their lore during your lore, because of your lore, which messes everything up and doesn't lead to perfect stories being told. 

It’s a never-ending, ever-building conglomeration of difficult stories, real stories, actual shit going down, and pushing thorough it anyway. In a word: Resiliency.

And then suddenly it’s not EITHER of those two above options, resiliency is necessary as the dual conflict of above boils over into a story about self worth and communication. Not about a video, not about a villain arc, the barriers of character break down, the story of the server which was once wrapped up in the easy rebuttal “It’s minecraft not real life” starts to crumble and suddenly it feels all too much like a real life problem stuck within the veneer of a character, forced to play out because it is in the context of a game, unable to be resolved until the person himself battles against his inner self.

And our villain is stuck under the thumb of someone else, despondent, weary, and just wanting to give up. Anything to end this endless agony that boiled from one mistake, one weak moment in listening to the devil on his shoulder, and has now brought real sorrow and massive stress. 

He talks of Wemmbu having leverage against him, a mysterious hold that keeps Flame from having any leverage in return. What looked like one type of character has boiled into something far more 3dimensional. 

And suddenly I’m getting flashbacks to the greatest story lifesteal has ever told.

FLAME: “How can I control another man’s decision that like, he just logs on and starts blowing stuff up. Bro. what can I do” 

ZAM: “well, [laughs] telling him that’s he’s griefing your video! Tell him that he’s griefing your video! It’s so obvious!”

FLAME:” he wont give a fuck!” 

ZAM: “HOW? He obviously cares. He obviously cares” 

FLAME: “he does not give a fuck bro” 

ZAM: “You can just talk to your teammates, did you know you can just communicate with them? That is something that you can do that we cannot.”

[…] FLAME: “its not that easy” 

ZAM: “but it should be. It should be, Flame”

ZAM: “they’ve been going against your motives this entire time? How is that not betraying? How is that any different?” 

FLAME: “bro they have leverage bro” 

[…] ZAM: “flame the way you’ve described this is that you’re being betrayed constantly by your teammates, your teammates are constantly going against you, always. And now you’re like scared of them as well, […] The way I see it is you’re having a communication problem, I don't know” 

FLAME: “I can’t do anything with somebody else’s problems” 

ZAM: “but it’s not someone else’s problem. It’s your problem […] you teammates are being terrible to you, your teammates are mistreating you”

FLAME: “where the hell am I going? There’s nobody left that’s gonna want me on their team. And that's my fault” 

ZAM: “that’s not necessarily true. You just have to look […] you don't have to betray them, you could just leave the team on good terms”  

FLAME: “that doesn’t exist” 

ZAM: “[conceding] fair”

FLAME: “okay tell me what- in this scenario, put yourself in my shoes.” 

oh he’s BEEN there. He has been there. Don’t worry Flame. 

Standing up to your purple teammate is never easy. Especially when you’re so attached to the third teammate in the group. Hopefully Zam and Pangi can give helpful enough advice, but then again did Planet and Bacon and Branzy’s advice give the best conclusion to that relationship? Was communication possible or was the only possible response upholding a boundary and leaving to show how serious he takes it? Putting his foot down and standing up for himself? Is it possible to do that without breaking apart the team while still being serious about what is going on? 

And then there’s Mane saying “flame said that?” “Dumbass flame :sob:” “we already said we’d stop after he asked LMFAO” 

Where this will lend up, I don’t know. But this is the most interesting lore lifesteal has had in such a long time. I’m getting so many flashbacks to how it felt to watch s4 and I couldn’t be happier.

Clouds 2021

I made this following a tutorial, wherein you treat the clouds as boxes, with perspective and everything, in order to create a sense of form and 3dimensionality. I think it turned out well, though I think maybe it would have looked better with the BG gradient reversed to match the directionality of the lightsource. Also unfortunate that I no longer remember what tutorial I did it from. :// If any of you spot it, let me know!
