Um hi I’m gonna talk about 404 and the works 🚶‍♀️ this ended up longer than I expected oops

What is she?

If we’re going to talk about how 404 can do the things she can do, we need to first talk about WHAT she is. 404 is… not just a moth? She clearly is, but she is also the ‘player’! When she got corrupted by the game, she was also given every ounce of power from the game. This left the game pretty much ‘dead’ and her in control, which is why Clangen.exe and the Vespidclan file is still running despite being broken. Basically, her having 100% of power meant that her and the system have ‘merged into one’, but since the system was corrupting and breaking apart as Moththorn went against her programing… That same corruption took over her. Then came the metamorphosis ‘rebirth’ symbolism yada yada yada aaaaaand that’s how 404 was born! 🎉🎉

And being the player, she can do ANYTHING in the game! Aside from creating, but ANYTHING! This means she can skip moons and go back to previous moons (time travel… inevitably caused Heartflicker’s injury), give cats injuries and conditions (basically giving Snakevalley recurring shock and whatever goes on in OOB), playing around with death settings (“dead”: false while letting their “dead_moons” go on and on, keeping the them dead but with conscious still intact so they can feel paralyzing agony *cough* what she does to cats like Spark), and let me tell you this is just scratching the surface.

Why does 404 appear different sometimes?

Shapeshifting? Form-changing? Neither of those! What it really is that she’s splitting her conscious around into different vessels/copies of herself that she can manipulate at will. It sounds complex, but trust me it won’t be after I explain it like this—She’s pretty much just multiplying herself so she can easily communicate with the cats in-game. Think of it like copying and pasting but without it being an exact replica.

To do that she needs some kind of source in the game that lacks much organism code-wise but still able to move around, so there’s room to fit a bit of her code in it. Whether it’s some kind of animal or a manifestation she made herself. Vinepaw probably explains it better than me.

So these guys that have shown up in the comics are her, or maybe 80% of her. She can control them and they have her same thoughts, so it’s basically her with a different identity. One big difference is that her shadow copies can only appear as a ‘hallucination’ and directly in the mind, but mini moth 4 is a real physical vessel that any cat can see, it’s just her text box that’s hidden from a few cats. She grabbed a poor little moth, stuffed her code into it, and now it’s a free new body to possess. The only reason she’s doing this is because Vinepaw’s mind is a little tricky than others, which we’ll discuss later on.

“Can’t 404 just appear normally like herself?” In-game? Nah, she exists in the Out Of Bounds area of the game, which is restricted zone no cat in-game can enter unless they go far enough to bypass it. 404 can barely get out of it herself.

But there’s times where she, her actual self, HAS appeared to cats like Stonepaw or Snakevalley, but only as a hallucination-that-feels-super-realistic-and-real. This would be whenever I draw her in her red and black colors or it’s just straight up her in all of her massive towering glory.

“Why can’t she just do this all the time instead of making copies?” A lady like her is too busy managing OOB and terrorizing the cats there! She’d only show herself if it was a top priority to her, like pressuring Snakie or finding Vinny.

How can she lurk into the mind?

She can’t go to the cats in-game. We all know that. The solution? Enter the mind! The best way I can explain it is she’s ‘hacking’ into the mindscape with all the knowledge she has so that they can see/envision her presence. Sometimes they aren’t too severe like just seeing vague glitches or her text boxes, or they’re very severe where she’s literally in front of you. Sounds easy for an evil moth goddess right?

Well rummaging in the mind isn’t… It’s most easiest when the cat is asleep, has already seen visions of ‘the fourth wall’ prior, or when the cat is most vulnerable. Other times, she needs to really intensely seep into the cat’s mind with, breaking through the barriers intense. Every psyche is different!

Some really good examples come from Stone and Vine! Stone saw 404 while she was just a small lil kit. After that, she’d constantly have nightmares and scary visions of 404. 404 quickly caught on and decided to keep Stone ‘in line’ via stalking so she can have ‘use’ to her plans later, but we all know that that didn’t work out. Vine meanwhile is able to ‘block’ 404 from his dreams, because all he thinks about 24/7 is cupcakes and rainbows. 404 actually managed to get to him later on, but she needed to actually be there than to use a silly copy, because it wouldn’t be very effective.

If she can’t interact with the cats in-game, how is she dragging deceased cats into OOB?

That’s because she isn’t… physically anyways. What she IS doing is coding them out of Starclan and into Out Of Bounds the very moment they die. It isn’t that scary, unless you see it happening yourself. Another trick of the mind that can unfortunately happen if you stand by her radius… but that’s very rare! ;)

How does coding work?

It’s like this

Okay but really… Coding is just what you and I could do on the computer—changing up stuff! Editing, fixing, modding, she can do it all! (apart from… yk…) It’s actually super self explanatory so there won’t be much to go over.

She uses her dexterous claws on these! These are the files, the source of every cats life and blood… The cats in OOB call them ‘The Towers’, cuz these things are taaaaaaallll. They do have their own special area in OOB, which is farther away from the actual place and are set in a ‘black void’, but she can spawn them in when she needs to make a quick ‘fix’.

404 can also take apart the files and rearrange them however she wants. And she can ‘spawn’ pieces of the files to her hand so she can edit them portably without having to climb or bring the whole tower with her.

Usually when she gets her hands on a file it will slowly (or quickly depending on the damage done) start chipping away. It isn’t all that bad, but once it’s taken full effect and broke so much of it, then the cat is also now ‘broken’. Take Heartie for example—She changed her trait from bloodthirsty to loyal, except 404 hadn’t changed it quite perfectly, so now she has a trait that ‘doesn’t exist’ within the code.

Plus like, you can take a look at the Moththorn file and see it’s completely demolished. Wonder why.

“My heart is pounding,” you admit, and your hand that absentmindedly clutches your moving chest allows you to let out a deep breath.

George chuckles. You’re both waiting for his girlfriend to come back from the bar with your cocktails - you for a drink, him so he can leave you two alone.

The bird that’s just made a grab at your bowl of snacks squawks from a metre away and you stare at it menacingly. Carmen comes back clutching two strawberry daiquiris, and George takes that as his cue to leave, hurriedly. You furrow your eyebrows. “What’s the man got to do at -” you check your watch -“three forty two pm on holiday?”

Carmen shrugs. “He had to get to the airport to pick people up, last I heard.”

You nod knowingly and lean back on the sun lounger, taking a sip of your drink.

Carmen starts to talk about drama from work, and you peer at her through your sunglasses as the warmth of the sun and the comfort of previous tipsiness starts making you drift off.

Around an hour later you’re rudely awoken by multiple cheeky voices; you can identify George’s loud voice through the squinting of your eyes through the sunlight, but there’s one voice that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It’s raspy - in a smooth way - but the short cackle that follows it allows you to realise that it's someone you definitely don’t want on holiday with you.

Pure annoyance makes you open your eyes. Carmen is nowhere to be seen; four men stand above you. You sit up, yawning, and hope that you’re not red with sunburn. (Looking down for a split second, you’re not.) Then you look up with some kind of synthetic smile and your blood boils as you look Max straight in the eyes.

“Hi boys,” you say, smiling, and get up to give everyone a hug; Lando spins you around and runs across the sand, and as you scream he throws you into the ocean.

Now you need a drink, for real.

LATER. 11:37 P.M.

Head heavy in your hand on the counter, you’re woozy, blanketed by too many cocktails, and Lily and Carmen sit across from you stealing blocks of chocolate from a bar Alex bought.

Max strolls in and you grimace.

The anger hasn’t dissipated- being in a serene setting hasn’t changed what happened- and you toss him the drink he nods to; he turns straight back around and leaves.

“What’s the beef with you two, anyway?” Lily says curiously, and Carmen laughs. “It’s so dumb.”

“When we were sixteen-” you interrupt yourself to cough- “he dated two of my friends and caused us all to break up our group. Then he asked me out for a date, we went out, then he ghosted me. I was left with no friends. Then we met again two years later and we had a screaming fight outside a club, which ended up in a Dutch gossip mag. I was so embarrassed.”

Lily scrunches her nose. Carmen has zoned out, but she laughs to herself.

You look at her with the hint of a smile, tilting your head.

She nudges Lily. “They have to share a room tonight.” She whispers, and she throws her head back laughing and you stare at her incredulously. “Sorry?”

“Max, I don’t fucking care, I’m sleeping on this stupid thing.” You kick the hard wooden bench at the foot of the bed. (It looks like a terrible place to sleep).

“Can you fucking get over yourself?” He says, rolling his eyes, and you’re drunk and upset and trying not to cry because he makes you so angry. “Just sleep in the fucking bed.”

You stand there in the room with your arms crossed, breeze softly blowing. He huffs and stalks off to the bathroom.

You get dressed for bed, in a big t-shirt because it’s hot and humid. Max walks out of the bathroom as you’re sliding on the shirt and you know he’s gotten a glimpse of your stomach and your underwear because his gaze changes from something frustrated to something you witnessed at the age of seventeen, across a dinner table as his hands move over your thigh.

He seems to be moving without knowing; suddenly he’s in front of you, eyes wild with desire you haven’t ever known, and it’s a test of patience, standing there under the twilight; the curtains blow.

You stand there with trepidation rattling your body and turn around, getting into bed like a stubborn little child.

He closes his eyes, opens the door and leaves.

9:23 A.M.

The morning air greets you as you walk outside; Lando’s made mimosas on the wooden table next to the swimming pool, and you take a champagne glass gratefully. You wave to Lily and Alex who sit with their feet in the pool, and sip, the sun bathing you in light.

Lando comes to sit next to you by the pool loungers and you raise your glass as a thank you to him. “I heard you two had a little spat last night,” he says carefully, and you snort. “He instigated it and left.”

He laughs. “He went past my room to sleep on the couch. His footsteps were so fuckin’ heavy, I couldn’t even sleep for a good twenty minutes.”

You laugh.

George yells from inside that he’s made breakfast and everyone gets up with a yawn. Lando grabs a spare bottle of champagne and you all walk inside.

There’s some nearly burnt pancakes, heavenly smelling bacon, some sausage, and fried eggs. You all praise him heavily (Alex wraps his arm around his waist and pretends to kiss him) and Max walks in. He doesn’t acknowledge you and instead greets everyone else. You roll your eyes.

13:43 P.M.

You’re a bit tipsy already, enough so that you can chat to Max amicably beside the pool as George and Alex play some mix of water polo and volleyball.

Your empty glass seems to shout at you from your side, so you pick it up and make your way back to the house.

As you enter the kitchen you hear someone stepping behind you. It’s Max - you know it from the soft thud of his foot against the wooden floor. Your eyelids flutter shut with some emotion you don’t know yet when he comes to stand next to you. You watch him out of your periphery, his hands, the soft, flowing movement of his body. His resting face, squinting with concentration to pour drinks. You bite back some words and carry on pouring.

As you turn around to go back, you two face each other, and your breath hitches when his eyes slowly move to meet yours, clutching your glass like it’s your protector. His gaze is… tender. In the kind of way that blurs out everything else.

The only thing that comes to mind is kissing him, so you move to go, and he sets down a glass to grab your arm. You clear your throat, and Christine McVie’s voice croons in the background when you look back. His eyelashes brush his cheek every time he blinks, and you study his face, forgetting all that came before.

Lando and Alex call, and you both leave. The feelings are left there, back in the house, when you go.

Stumbling back from the restaurant, everyone bids eachother a good night after a quick drink of a glass of water each. You find your room and start getting undressed in the middle of the room, carelessly, and when you hear Max come in you get a fright and clutch your chest. He lets out a little laugh as he gets his things and moves to the bathroom.

Two minutes later, when he walks back inside, you’re bending over to see your face in the mirror to take off your makeup and you can sense the energy inside the room has changed. He’s in a shirt and those gingham pants that look divine on any man, and he stands still for a moment before moving over to the window. You bend back up and you’re met by his gaze again, frozen in place. Your lips part momentarily and he steps forward, and you’re reminded of how much you hate his stupid face when his lips meet yours. His hands wrap around your waist, one dipping beneath your shirt to rest on your stomach, and you’re kissing him, hard, desperately, messily; in a way that you don’t realise how much you wanted to until now.

He moves slowly to the bed, large hands grasping your waist softly, sending shivers up your spine. His hips press against yours as you fall on the bed, gasping with pleasure as his hands meet your neck.

In the garage, you’re busy chatting to some mechanics when he comes up to you, and his hands slide around your waist from behind. You twist your torso to smile up at him as he presses a kiss to your cheek, and to your delight he pushes you towards his driver’s room, shooting you a knowing grin as he looks away, holding up five fingers and then a thumbs up. You bite back a broad smile as you walk away.

So it’s based on baldi’s basic and all those horror games under the guise of sweetness.

I got this idea from the old Russian 9 game!

Simply put the player finds an old game by a man who was found dead.

The man was making a vr game to help children with school subjects. And seemly died while test playing it.

So the player plays it and meets 1. He’s more focused on helping with math. He gives you simple problems that slowly scale into harder questions (including calculating the distance of the sun from earth) after a while of playing the game shuts down and restarts.

The player can’t take off the head sets and now they being hunted down by 1.

(Who tbh is just math themed I don’t have a design in mind for him. If anyone wants to do anything go d for it)

Through out the school the player meets more punks and not all of them are trying to kill them.

The player is trying to gather tools to fix the glitch before they die.

So here are the punks

1- the main bad guy. An instant killer when he catches you. Luckily he has a bell on his staff so you can hear when he is near.

2- he runs the security cameras and is a fucking narc. If you stay in one location to long he will just drop you location to the entire place. Announcing it on the PA system. There are places he can not see and with the spray paint item you can create safe spots. (Tho upon doing so he makes an announcement about how disappointed he is in the player).

I do have a design idea for him. He has a cool microphone and a tape player attached to his waist. He also wears headphones.

The twins- the only characters that can’t hurt you. the twins are reading/spelling themed. Sometimes they’ll chase you down and make you do a spelling mini game which freezes you in your tracks. Or occasionally they will be split up. If you find one of them they will follow you around flashing their lights (which can alert the others) until you find the other twin! You can use the spray paint on them. (I don’t have a design idea for them)

5- he is a nonhostile character. Unless he gets caught on one of 2’s cameras (aka he runs into you in the hall since he physically can not make himself go past you without stopping you). After being caught 2 makes an announcement about how 5 needs to actually make himself useful and 5 glitches out before becoming hostile. He will slowly drive your Hp down.

When he’s not hostile he will either be in a safe zone. Or walking down the halls to a safe zone. When you meet him in a safe zone he’ll give you a map to the whole school and asks you to fix what’s happened to his friends

6 is art themed ofc. He has this cute little apron He is not typically a hostile character. He’ll come up to you and ask you to get him some random art supplies. If you don’t find it in the time limit or give him the wrong thing he will let out a loud and painful scream and go after you.

7 is a character you typically see depending on your play style. She has a 1/4 chance to appear when using the spray paint on the twins. Her arrival will be announced by 2. She is a weeping angel type enemy. She won’t move when being looked at. She sports/health themed (I don’t have an Idea of design)

8 he’s like 5 in a way. He has this thing where you have to guide him to a safe zone/keep him away from 1. Upon being helped he gives you a random item or activates one speaker in the school to play a loud noise to distract any hostiles. He’s music themed with music note patches on his arm.

9 is hostile and an instant kill like 1. However he only appears if you stay in a safe zone to long. He silent and faster than 1. An odd thing however is that all of the other stitchpunks stay away from him when he is spawned. Occasionally he will wrap the player in wires and pull them to him (this is a quick time/spam event) also he has a cute little wire tail with a light bulb at the end and he’s wearing a letter man jacket. He’s science themed

Items you can find (so far)

Spray paint. Can be used on twins and the cameras can either be laying around or as a reward from 6.

Map. A gift from 5. Gives you the lay out.

Strobe light. Thanks to some inventiveness 5 turned his old ripped out optic into a strobe light to save the player from death once

~Act I~

Techno stood in line for jumbo pops, keeping an eye on the fox at the front. The cashier, an exhausted star borne named Scott Major, 'Listen, I don't know what you're doing skulking around during daylight hours but I don't want any trouble. So hit the road.' pointing to the door. Yogurt, Fundy's 'son' looked around, making eye contact with Techno. 'I'm not looking for any trouble either sir. I simply want to buy a jumbo pop for my little boy' Fundy gestured to the boy, 'Do you want the red or the blue one pal?' The snow fox unable to speak due to the pacifier in his mouth. Yogurt tapped the glass, pointing at the cherry jumbo pop. Scott uncomfortable at how close the kid was, 'Come on kid, back up.'

Addressing Fundy this time, 'Listen buddy, what? they aren't any fox ice cream joints in your part of town?'

Looking sheepish, 'No no, there are, there are. It's just my boy,' pausing to ruffle Yogurt's hair, 'my little champion, he loves all things star borne.' Bringing the boy closer into view, Yogurt flipped the onesie's hoodie over, revealing its star borne theme. ''He wants to be one when he grows up' Yogurt gesturing like Scarlet Witch, pretended he himself was able to shoot stars out of his hands. 'pew pew, pew pew'

'Is that adorable? Who am I to crush his little dreams?' Scott pulling out a sign, 'You probably can't read fox but the sign says we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone,' pointing to each word as they said it. 'So beat it.'

'You're holding up the line' Tommy standing behind the duo shoved them. Techno witnessing what was unfold, stepped in helping the duo acquire the tasty treat.

Not noticing bunny cop Techno watching them, they melted down the popsicle, jarring the syrup in 4 gallon jar. Placing it in the back of a rusted orange van, they drove to Tundra town, Yogurt pressing his feet into the snow. Creating a mold of his paws then placing a small wooden stick. Fundy pouring the jarred syrup into a previous set of molds. It working similar to an assembly line. Next Techno followed them to a bank, selling the 'pawsicles' to otters exiting for lunch. Quickly finishing, the otters toss the sticks into a set of recycling bins. Yogurt underneath them, popped out a door with a mini garbage truck full. Techno still following, saw the duo then deliver the sticks to a construction zone. 'What's with the color?'

'Color? uhhh it's redwood'

The duo splitting the profit, Yogurt quickly ran to his truck, taking off the onesie. 'Hey? no kiss bye-bye for daddy?'

'You kiss me tomorrow, I'll bite your face off.' Placing sunglasses on, 'Ciao.'
