Reading Triage
(I love being in the middle of ten billion books.)
CURRENTLY READING
1. Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands - Heather Fawcett: 2nd time through, now in audio. I've decided this series demands to be read twice, once in each format, before you've really wrung the full feeling out of it.
2. Safekeeping - Karen Hesse: audio, because it's under 5 hrs & the theme is Walking A Lot, so I figured it would be a good choice for exercise motivation. (but now I have to at least track down an ebook too because according to reviews the real book has photographs)
3. Bound For Home - Meika Hashimoto: a modern-day Incredible Journey but this time the third member of the party is the girl the pets belong to (also the cat isn't a pet yet, but she's considering adopting the family).
4. A Hundred Pieces of Me - Lucy Dillon: rather randomly fished this out of a bag (bought at a book sale a couple of years ago) and decided I'm in the mood for it now, 8 12 yrs after last reading one of her books. To my surprise I am SUPER enjoying it! It's quite long, though; I've put in a good 3 hours of reading time and I'm still not at the halfway point.
5. Top Ten - Katie Cotugno: a recent purchase, grabbed when I needed a summery-feeling book to read outside. Right now it's back to dull and rainy so this book is off to the side, but there will be plenty of good days ahead.
UP NEXT
1. Another Good Dog: One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs - Cara Sue Achterberg: sign me up!!
2. Half Broke - Ginger Gaffney: a memoir of a woman who helped facilitate the mustang training program at a prison. Reviews are mixed, especially from people disappointed in the horse content (which is the ONLY reason I'm reading it), but perhaps I'll be surprised.
3. I Know What You Did - N.L. Hinkens: taking the new I.L.L. site out for a spin with this thriller, in which "what if baby-crazed Terri Schuester struck that baby-adopting deal w/ Quinn, but also Terri was slightly more like Emma -- aka the school guidance counselor -- and Quinn was potentially insane or at least murderous."
4. Bird Brain - Joanne Levy: I just read The Sun Will Come Out on a whim (book sale purchase), and in looking up her back catalog I see a children's book ft. a girl bird-sitting an African gray parrot. Sounds fun! Also nice & short.
5. Out of the Valley of the Horses - Wendy Orr: I've been waiting on this children's book to be published in the U.S. since last year, at last it's here!
6. Monarch Manor - Maureen Leurck: may or may not get to this one right now, but it's been on my TBR for a few years and both this and Wendy Orr's book are only in the county next door. I always try to grab at least 2 items when I make the trek over here, so: cleaning out late grandmother's dilapidated mansion for an estate sale it is! [edit: my mistake, the hoarder grandma and the dilapidated mansion are different houses. interesting]
edit 2: see, so many I forgot one!
7. Freaks, Geeks & Dawson's Creek: How Seven Teen Shows Transformed Television - Thea Glassman: waiting for the audio but I have the ebook checked out because I'm that impatient (no physical copy). I've only actually watched 3 of them, and only two while they were airing/with understanding of the chronology, but I'm still interested to hear about these shows because most of them are at least on my TBW.
#reading triage#one hundred percent chance of me starting if not finishing one of the books in group 2 before i finish all of group 1 btw

The pool at Minsky’s, August 1958. Photos by Allan Grant
Update: The location was identified as the residence of Harold Minsky, 5712 Kelly Lane, which is now airport property. The women are unknown.
Our original article considers the history of another neighborhood known as “Naked City.”
The legend of “Naked City” – the neighborhood west of the Stratosphere – claims the area got its nickname in the 60s because of its sunbathing showgirls at various apartments.
The phrase “Naked City” was coined by photojournalist Weegee for a book published in the late 40s. It was turned into a movie, then a TV series – it became shorthand for a lawless inner city. The earliest this term was used in print for Las Vegas was consistent with this definition, a front-page Review-Journal story in 1982: “Crime is soaring in the once-fashionable area that is called ‘Naked City’ by Metro police …”
Originally called Meadows Addition, platted in the late 20s, and built up with apartments in the 50s, the neighborhood became geographically isolated as Las Vegas expanded in the 60s-70s. The rise in crime and “Naked City” moniker kept it on the front pages of Las Vegas newspaper through the 80s. Metro formed a gang detail to work the area of Tam Drive where 29 murders were linked to gang activity in ’82-83.
Some who lived in this area in the 60s & 70s never heard it called Naked City before. Sahara hotel dancer Gail McQuary: “It wasn’t called that. We had a beautiful apartment on Boston Ave and I used to walk to work.”
Others insist the legend is real. Former city councilman Steve Miller, who did not live there, says, “We called it Naked City when we were in our teens [in the 60s] because we’d see suntanning showgirls. I didn’t come up with the name, it’s just what people said.”
There was an effort to rebrand the neighborhood as Meadows Village in the late 80s, and Miller was quoted telling the suntanning story to a reporter in 1989, insisting the “Naked City” nickname was not negative. The neighborhood now falls within the boundaries of a larger area which has been called the Gateway District.

Disability Rhetoric
by Jay Timothy Dolmage (2014)
Disability Rhetoric is the first book to view rhetorical theory and history through the lens of disability studies. Traditionally, the body has been seen as, at best, a rhetorical distraction; at worst, those whose bodies do not conform to a narrow range of norms are disqualified from speaking. Yet, Dolmage argues that communication has always been obsessed with the meaning of the body and that bodily difference is always highly rhetorical. Following from this rewriting of rhetorical history, he outlines the development of a new theory, affirming the ideas that all communication is embodied, that the body plays a central role in all expression, and that greater attention to a range of bodies is therefore essential to a better understanding of rhetorical histories, theories, and possibilities.
Two books I just learned about that I’d love to read.
I learned about Jay Dolmage through a talk given by Drew Holladay at a UMBC conference on Inclusive Language. From an interview with Dolmage about the book Disability Rhetoric, on how we might “claim new models of communication and artistry” and which writers and artists are already doing this
Lots and lots and lots of them! Eli Clare, Margaret Price, Anne Finger, Jim Ferris, Alison Kafer, Melanie Yergeau — these are just a few of the people who through the actual way that they write about/through disability create new models. But I also think of artists like Riva Lehrer, or performance groups like Sins Invalid. I really could go on and on and on. It is very strange to create a list like this, though — because people have been doing this forever — and there are many, many more people doing this now than I can list. And I really strongly think that when we begin to look for the body, and in particular when we begin to make space for non-normative bodies and minds, we start to communicate in powerfully different ways. For instance, my brother Matt used a combination of speech and sign and a synthesizer to communicate. Because he only had full use of one hand, we would often ask me to “complete” signs with him by touching hands. That taught me more about what communication really is than any book I could ever read.
Disability in Science Fiction: Representations of Technology as Cure edited by Kathryn Allan (2013)
In this groundbreaking collection, twelve international scholars – with backgrounds in disability studies, English and world literature, classics, and history – discuss the representation of dis/ability, medical "cures," technology, and the body in science fiction.
From a review in Strange Horizons
The final section? Allan has collected the most interesting—the most thought-provoking—articles of the entire volume into Cure Narratives For The (Post)Human Future. If I had to single any one of them out, it would be Canavan’s, which discusses fatal genetic disorders in light of some of Octavia Butler’s stories.

Another 10 day challenge, by posting my turning point works that I made last 20 years of my metalworking career. Day 1: Propagation Project; Ring of Small Petals 2014 Wax-coated, forged mild steel, H.57 W.58 D.30 cm (H.22 1/2 W.22 7/8 D.11 3/4 in) The big tsunami struck in northern parts of Japan in 2011. I watched live news in my living room in North Wales, and I felt sick with violent images on TV. I had to switched off straightway and feeling quite angry. As I live close to the sea, I went to local beach and pray for the victims and survivors. Looking at the waves with mixed emotions, it was powerful yet beautiful which can kill people. Three years on, my amazing first assistant Joanne left after working with me for four years to do her MA. The last job she did was very intricate small petals forged out painstakingly from 3mm wire. This is most time-consuming components in my palette, and she made ten litres of them. I felt bit emotional before using this, so it took few months to decide to weld them together. Shortly after, the whole10 x 5 metre roofs of my studio have been blown away by 80mph gust, it left like war site with exposed breeze blocks wall in the rainy stormy day. I had to work in a dump small shed for 6 months. Then I thought it was time to use the special components to commemorate the Tsunami event, co-existing with sad, rough, tough, yet appreciating, passionate and vital context. My aim was to create "Ring", which is a symbol of infinity in Buddhism, continuous chain of lives. It often used to create border between secret spiritual space. By using these thousands of petals, I started welding large movement of waves and then filled with floral forms. Looking back the time I was welding this piece in the dark small shed, I feel sometime the best piece comes out in the hard time, reminds me also the words by a Japanese painter who lives in Dublin; "paradise does not need art". Very ironic but in the middle of this pandemic, I am buzzing with new ideas. Adrian Sassoon, my art dealer found the most incredible home for this piece soon after I sent it to thier office; The British Museum. I cannot thank enough for everyone got involved. https://www.instagram.com/p/CKoiDgAhT5V/?igshid=7h7cci89qgmq

Public Reaction to the Nixon Pardon
During his Vice Presidential confirmation hearings in November 1973, Gerald Ford had been asked about the possibility of a President preventing criminal prosecution of his predecessor if the former President had resigned from office. “I do not think the public would stand for it,” he answered. After pardoning Richard Nixon on September 8, 1974, he discovered how right he had been.
Public reaction was swift, massive, and overwhelmingly negative. People of all ages and walks of life from around the country sent in their thoughts on the decision. Nearly 84,000 letters arrived in the first two weeks following the announcement. Public opinion ran approximately 78% against the pardon.
These letters represent a tiny sample of those sent to President Ford. By the end of the administration the White House had received 75,837 letters in support of the pardon and 197,494 from those against it, according to a Presidential mail analysis completed on January 6, 1977.

DIY Crochet Handbag
Have you ever gone into a store or see something on TV/ Internet and say to yourself.. I can make that!!! Well… Thats what happened to me one day when I went shopping at Target. I was looking for a Tote to carry the yarn I’m not packing up for our move. I glance over and see this crochet handbag… Natural instinct is to immediately check this out.. kinda like quality control.. was it machine made or handmade crochet, etc hahaha I pick it up, examine it.. Wow. it wasn’t machine made.. hmmm Then I look at the price tag and gasp. Nope.. was not going to give a Big named store that amount of money.. I can make this!!
I give you.. The DIY Crochet Handbag 🙂
The Handbag at the store was a neutral colored stiff but still on the soft side, cotton material. So off I went to find yarn similar to this handbag. I found several that were close but still not the exact texture. Then a light bulb went off in my head.. off to the hardware department I went..
Waalaa.. I found it. Cotton twine. This has the same texture and thickness of the “store” handbag and bonus .. it was 2.84 a ball. I grab a couple and off I went to create the look a like.
Half way through making this handbag, I was thinking about the texture and durability of this bag, then my mind started to wander and all of a sudden I said to myself.. Tye Dye!! Wouldn’t it be cool if you could custom dye your handbag.
After I completed the pattern I went to the craft store and picked up some t-shirt tye dye.
To be perfectly honest, I have never Tye Dyed anything before and after the initial excitement of getting the dye, I started to get a little nervous. I didn’t read the directions of the dye before I purchased and when it came time to make it.. eeekkk. This particular dye was for Large projects and required some math to calculate a smaller batch of dye. I recommend if you are going to dye your handbag to read the directions of several types of dye before you purchase.
The dye I used was 1 packet per Gallon of water.. I cut that down into 3rds and still had dye left over.
I also decided to make some swatches to test dye. So glad I did. The twine doesn’t soak up the dye as I thought it would have. It was almost like water repellent at first. I lightly sprayed water on the first area I was going to dye first… This worked out much better.
I noticed you can actually get some neat effects when spray water on the already dyed area.. it make the dye move and creep up the twine. I started with the darker dye first but you can try many different techniques with your swatches before applying to your handbag.
Cautions with the dye.. this is fabric dye and it will stain anything it gets on.. use gloves and it is best to dye outside where spills will not ruin anything. It was raining here when I went to dye so I did dye inside. I have a stainless steel sink so I used a cooling rack over my sink to dye. For drying I transferred the cooling rack to a old cookie sheet pan.
For some extra fun.. I made 2 coaster size swatches and let my husband and daughter design their own. It also gave me other ideas on how I wanted my bag to look.
When dyeing don’t worry about areas that arent covered completely with dye..the dye will spread out while drying. Also, keep in mind the color will lighting a bit also. The picture above is when the swatches and bag where wet.
Drying… Again preferably allow them to dry outside. I was late getting this post out because I didn’t not think about dry time. They barely dried while in the house. It wasnt til a day later when I could put them outside for a few hours in the sun that they finally dried. I Do Not recommend putting them in the drier.. the dye will destroy your drier.
These pictures are of the swatches and bag fully dried. As you can see the dye faded a bit and also the areas that did not have dye filled in with color.
I added some twine to the edges of the coasters the family made. Took a wire brush and combed out the twine and made little Rug coaster. Have some extra fun with this project. This little side project made me think back to crafts we did in school.. was a nice little break away from the everyday schedule 🙂
Crochet Handbag Pattern
This bag is done in the round. It has repetitive rows. It has 2 “special” need to know stitches.. Which are a Cluster and a DC2TOG. Below are a couple links for reference on how to do the “special” stitches.
Cluster.. Mama in a Stitch ….The Cluster for my pattern is only 3DC’s
DC2TOG… New Stitch a Day
Cluster2TOG..
youtube
What you will Need…
2 Balls of Cotton twine .. I went to Walmart Hardware Dept to get the kind I used
Handbag Handles.. You can use any you wish for your handbag.. I purchased my Bamboo handles from Joanns.
Fabric Dye.. Remember to read instructions so you don’t have to make large batches of dye. Also to see if you need anything to add when making dye. I needed Salt.
Dye Bottles & Disposable Gloves
Cheap Aluminum Cookie Sheet.. If you do not have one you can use for drying handbag

Round 19.) SC around, Sl St into first SC and Finnish off.
Attaching Handles…
Depending on the type of handle you use, there is several ways to attach your Handles. On my handbag I choice 2 different ways you could attach them.
First photo is a single sewn, center hold. Second picture I placed additional wrapping on either side. Options are limitless on how you would like to attach yours.
Attach along the whole bottom half of handle, Partial attachment, etc.. Also… Keep in mind as to whether or not you want your handle “holder” to be dye’d or Natural. If you want it to match, make sure you dye some of your extra cord.
When attaching the handle you want to use a whole cluster.. So sew from bottom of cluster, up around handle and into top of same cluster and just keep going around and across the same row of clusters, til your happy with the hold and look.
Get creative with your bag.. this is your creation and it needs your personal touch 🙂
I hope you have fun with this DIY Handbag and Please let me know if you have any questions. Those that would like to share your finished handbag I would love to see them… You can post them here in Comments or #wulfiesessentials on instagram 🙂

1. 24hrs till the end of the world… you can get to any place, to any person in an instant though.. where do you go, who do you see.. and why? phew we’re starting w a tough one i see akdfshkjsad i guess i would visit my internet friends first, esp bc i haven’t met a lot of them in person. then i’d grab my clostest friends, my sister and my cousin (w plus ones) and visit an adventure park. or a concert of our fav bands. or both. whatever makes them smile.
2. zombie apocalypse, who do you have on your team (rl buddies or fictional, your choice mates) teresa and jenny from work, my sister, my friends. between the bunch of us i think we’d come up w some pretty amazing ideas. plus, we have like 4 trained chefs in the team and someone who studied biology. (my fictional pick would be john wick and the gang from the magicians - a lot of chaos, but we’d have a solid chance)
3. five must read before you die books (or comics if you want) - runemarks by joanne harris - six of crows by leigh bardugo - the song of achilles by madaline miller - american gods by neil gaiman - the thief lord + inkheart by cornelia funke (couldn’t decide, sorry)
4. if you had the power to time travel to any point in history, where would you go and why? aaaaaah don’t ask me that, i’m historian. i’d split my body in so many pieces akjdfhskja my first instinct was to answer this question w the roman antiquity tho. i’d love to have a look around and see what the forum romanum (and other historic cities/buildings/sites etc.) used to look like. also to ancient mesopotamia bc heck yes!!
5. one thing you’ve done this year that you’re proud of? i mean, i didn’t directly do it, but i got promoted to deputy manager of the cinema i work at. which is like!! wow my boss rlly trusts me that much, huh? (or the 8 exams i wrote at the beginning of this year. i didn’t ace all of them, but i passed all of them and that’s what counts)
6. what’s something everyone loves, but you think is very overrated? that’s tough to answer. mostly it’s v popular artists on here. but that’s probably bc the music i listen to differs that much from the one everyone on tumblr seems to love. (i’m not gonna dive into which characters are overrated em, i wanna live - if you wanna know tho hmu and i’m gonna hit you w the salt)
7. going to get real controversial here (how you answer this, will possibly end our mutual engagement…) … pineapple on pizza… should it be on there? ... people who enjoy eating pinapple on pizza eat children (kidding, but that’s what my sis and i tell her bf when he mentions pinapple on pizza). i don’t really like ham on pizza to beginn with, and the combination with pineapple makes me go :/ so it’s a no from me
8. whats an album that is your ride or die? (or artist/band) i’m gonna name 3 bc that’s how indecisive i am. so here goes: - true view by stick to your guns - this album is an experience through and through and their texts are always amazing. you’re basically discovering yourself. plus, the reach for me: forgiveness of self is the most healing song ever - billy talent iii by billy talent - this is the album that made me fall in love with them and with going on concerts. i remember rusted from the rain playing on mtv and me saying: “i like this song.” my papa was kinda shocked, bc: “you listen to that kind of music?!” (right up to this moment i only ever listened to the jonas brothers, ashley tisdale etc.) - the sufferer and the witness by rise against - while it doesn’t include the first song of theirs i ever listened to, it features ready to fall and prayer of the refugee. two songs i love so much, i don’t even have words for it. they were my first open air concert ever and the first time i came close to a mosh pit lmao
9. apple or android? why. android. i only ever had android phones. i feel like the interface is more userfriendly and android phones don’t tend to break when you look at them the wrong way. but i’m not a fan of samsung either. very happy w my huawei lmao
10. advice you’d give to your past self at a time when you were struggling? take a deep breath and stay calm. look up to the stars at night and let them root you. the universe is listening and everything will work out the way it should. don’t try to do everything at once. small steps lead to your goal as well. (i still don’t have a solid advice for middle school when i was bullied but: you won’t be in this situation forever, you’ll meet so many great people who love you for the person you are. be yourself, even if it’s hard. you’re more than their cruel jokes. so much more.)
11. something you’re looking forward to? the impericon festival on april 19. i’m gonna see stick to your guns again, plus so many other great bands are gonna be there!! and i’m really looking forward to my trip to prague w my sister and two friends. it’s gonna be super amazing!!
