Trektober Day #27: Domesticity
"Then you dip the apples in the honey and eat them together, and that symbolizes having a sweet new year," Jake explained, making a mess as he did so. Ben eyed the honey spill on the table. Jake, predictably, didn't notice.
"I like any holiday that comes with good food," Kasidy said. She met Ben's eyes across the table and grinned.
"Then you're joining the right family," Ben promised.
She held out her apple slice towards him.
"Cheers," she said.
"Cheers," he agreed, and they toasted their apple slices together like the finest glasses of champagne.
"Nog will be coming over later," Jake added, interrupting the moment, "but he can't be in the room while I blow the shofar. It hurts his ears too much."

(re)Introducing - the minecraft jewish mod!
hello jumblr & mineblr! this is a passion project that has been on hiatus for over 2 years, originally started at @jewishmod-remade (same team, just changed blogs) and we are FINALLY blowing the dust off of it to bring it back to life!
this blog will be used to share works in progress, updates for the mod, announcements for releases, playtesting, etc - basically just sharing info on the mod for anyone interested! we're excited to share with you!
this mod is primarily made by @faygelehh using MCreator, with some additional programming help from my gf (who does not have social media) !
We aim for a full release for Forge 1.21 (or 1.22, if possible) by Summer of 2025! We also plan to back-port (unsure how far back) and will hopefully also make the mod available for Fabric, but at the moment we are limited to the abilities of MCreator ^^
Our goals for this mod:
add over 70+ new jewish foods from all around the world!
add over 30+ (each) unique tallitot & kippot , one for each color of minecraft dyes, jewish cultures from around the world, and a pride collection!
add at least 5 new mobs - more info on this soon!
adding several usuable items for holidays, including a shofar (which will be similar but different from the existing ram's horn), a dreidel, etrog & lulav, etc....
redesigning the villagers - we intend to do *something* about the unfortunate design of our villager friends, but we don't have a specific plan yet & would love feedback from our communities!
and more!
--
Here are a few examples of the items that we have done so far (:

The **ram's horn**, or **shofar**, holds deep significance in the observance of **Rosh Hashanah**, symbolizing both spiritual awakening and remembrance. Here are the key reasons for its importance:
1. **Call to Repentance** – The sounding of the shofar serves as a spiritual wake-up call, urging people to reflect, repent, and renew their commitment to live a righteous life in the coming year. It is meant to stir the soul and inspire self-examination.
2. **Remembrance of the Binding of Isaac** – The shofar is traditionally made from a ram's horn, linking it to the biblical story of the **Binding of Isaac** (Akedat Yitzhak), when God provided a ram to be sacrificed in place of Isaac. Blowing the shofar recalls this act of faith and God's mercy.
3. **Coronation of God as King** – On Rosh Hashanah, the shofar blast also represents the coronation of God as the King of the Universe. It signals God's sovereignty and the collective commitment of the Jewish people to His rule.
4. **Symbol of Freedom and Redemption** – The shofar was historically used to announce significant events, including the proclamation of freedom during the Jubilee year. On Rosh Hashanah, it symbolizes the hope for personal and collective redemption in the year to come.
The sounds of the shofar—**Tekiah, Shevarim, Teruah**—evoke different emotional responses, from triumph to brokenness, adding depth to the prayers and intentions of the day.

hello!! i'd love to see either a sheepgender or a raccoonboygender! whichever you want or feel more motivated to do ^^
Tumblr media
Sheepgender was requested by @t0mmy-loser! Sorry this also took me a literal year mate! I tried doing both but Raccoonboy kept fucking me over… I am STILL going too fast for my friend and Alt ID guy, so those will be added later!
Sheepgender is a gender that, from what I can find, is a gender related to sheep or a connection to sheep! No clue who coined it, I've looked literally everywhere but the best credits I can find are @pupyzu who coined Sheeptix and @xeno-aligned, who coined Lambgender- this variant of the flag, by Transfeminine on Deviantart, was clearly inspired by the Lambgender flag after all. Guys I have ADHD, I don't have the attention span for research hunts like this lol. If you have any further info PLEASE find a way to tell me.
This Magical Kid has a Sacrificial Lamb Theme! They use They/He Pronouns and Lamb/Lambs/Lambself, Baa/Baas/Baaself, Fluff/Fluffs/Fluffself, Wool/Wools/Woolself, Sheep/Sheeps/Sheepself, and Sheer/Sheers/Sheerself Neopronouns!
Their name is Bo, after Bo-Peep! He can clone other people- this is a reference to the first cloned animal being a sheep! These clones share Bo's consciousness, but are a bit more timid and prone to fleeing.
Baas Magical Kid Weapon is a hunting horn made to look like a ram's horn! The horn will rally everyone who hears it to Bo's cause, increasing their strength, bravery, and stamina!
A useless fact about Bo is that, while he was raised Christian by his heavily Christian father, he is Jewish because his mother (who divorced his father) is Jewish! He's therefore kinda iffy with his Magical Kid Weapon because MAN is it similar to a Shofar, which he ABSOLUTELY should not be playing.
(A.N.: I AM NOT JEWISH!! I really hope I'm not wrong with any of the tidbits about Bo's backstory!)
The Magical Kid Project is a project wherein I steadily turn Pride Flags into Magical Kids! Requests are open through my inbox! Commission info is under the #commissions tag, I have a deal on Magical Kid Portraits!

Chapter 2: Following Him
Nathanael x reader (romantic)
My abba and I were walking in an uncomfortable silence. We were on our way to Nazareth for celebrating the new year. It was a hot day today with the sun shining bright in the sky and the wind blowing my hair constantly in my face. Annoyed I brushed my hair back in my veil. I could hear the sound of Shofars in the distance meaning that we were close to the field were the fesitivities would happen. "I want you to be silence and only speak when I says so" my abba commanded grumpily. I nodded while putting a fake smile on my face as we arrived at the field. This would be a good day, I could feel it.
"Shalom Shalom Benjamin, been a while huh?" Rafi said while hugging my abba, I looked around hoping to find some familiar faces. "Shalom Y/n, look at you, you've grown! Dinah said while giving me a broad smile. "Shalom Dinah, how are you?" I replied, already forgetting my promise. I peeked a look at my abba to see if he has noticed it. He has. Oh no, what do I do? "We should get going, there are a lot more people to see" my abba interrupted before Dinah could answer my question. I gave a small wave at Dinah before following my abba. My father put his hand on my shoulder, to others looking like he's directing me, to me it feels like a heavy weight, like I was trapped in his care.
I picked an apple with honey, enjoying the sweet flavour of it. While I was munching on it, I spotted Lazarus and his sister behind him. There here! I sighed, relieved that they could free me from my fathers grasp. Martha spotted me first, nudging Lazarus and gave a subtle nod at me, well not that subtle. Lazarus and I locked eyes with each other, I gave him a small smile. But before I could see his reply, I was hold up by my abba. "Y/n stay close to me, and say hi to these people", he said whispering in my ear while pinching my left arm. I nodded and smiled at the couple while answering their questions dishonestly, knowing that my abba was still in my reach.
My father and I were constantly moving, like he knew somehow that Lazarus and his sisters were here. Did he see them too? My head was buzzing from the heat and the lack of shadow. "Shalom Lazarus, I didn't know you'll be here" hearing my fathers voice next to me. I turned to my fathers side and there he was, standing perfectly straight. "Shalom Benjamin, we would never miss the new year celebration in Nazareth." He replied kindly, and then added:" my sisters would love to celebrate with your daugther, if that's alright?" It seemed like everything stilled, I looked at my abba, fearing of what he might do. Will he yell at Lazarus? Will he find an excuse to keep me by his side? A million other possibilities flew through my mind as we waited in tension on my fathers reply. "Of course she may, but I want her by my side immeadiatly after the celebrations" he said with an authority in his voice. I looked at my abba, suprised that he will let me go and have some fun. "Of course, Shalom Shalom" Lazarus said while gesturing at me to go. "Thank you abba" I said in disbelief, following Lazarus to where his sisters were standing.
Mary and I were giggling, trailing behind Lazarus who just found someone he knew. Martha was standing next to Mary looking at us with a question in her eyes. "What are you two laughing about now?" She asked annoyed. We looked at each other knowing that we were trying to control our laughter for the last ten minutes. "We just saw someone stumble over there." I said while pointing behind us. Our group suddenly stopped walking as Lazarus put his hands over a man's eyes. The man didn't looked and sounded suprised as I heard Him say, "Oh, I was wondering when this was coming." When He turned around and greeted Lazarus with a smile. I couldn't help smile either, even though I didn't know Him, I felt at ease with Him. As Lazarus and the man untangle from their embrace, He turned to Mary and Martha and greeted them as well. I took a step back, so the two sisters could greet this man without being bordered by me. As Dinah and Rafi said there goodbyes to the mysterious man, I peeked between Martha and Mary to observe Him more.
As we continued walking, with Lazarus' arm draped around his friend. As they were talking I whispered my question to Mary. "Who is that, Mary?" Mary looked at me and smiled while she answered with an admiration in her eyes. "That's Jesus, Lazarus and him are childhood friends." I nodded when I suddenly remembered the name. "Jesus? The one who they been talking about?" Mary shrugged, I raised my eyebrows questioning her. We stopped once again when Lazarus started talking about their past. "Are you really doing miracles?" Mary suddenly asked causing Martha to be the big sister. "Mary, be delicate" Martha said with a look at Mary. Jesus looked at Mary, then His eyes set on me for a second before focusing on Mary again. I let out a shaky breath, taken away by the intensity of His eyes. They were brown, but somehow they have a love in them that I could never describe. "...I am hearing that you turned water into wine. Healed hundreds in places like Syria. And that you recently preached to thousands some sermons people are still talking about. And that you made a bunch of friends in Samaria. Which we'll need to talk about, while making a bunch of enemies in places that we actually like." Lazarus rambled. I waited Jesus' answer in anticipation as Lazarus continued. "You are the greatest Rabbi who ever lived?" Lazarus finally asked. I was shocked with Jesus humble reply; "Well, there's still a lot of work to be done."
There was something about Him, that I couldn't describe, but all that I knew was that I wanted to stay in His presence. I felt like I could do everything and fear nothing, not even my abba. I will follow Him, if my abba will like it or not. I smiled, finally feeling free after all those years.

"Yud" ~ the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet.
The tiny letter that, when added to the end of Hebrew words that are descriptors of God, wondrously changes the description of our relationship with Him,
It changes the words from simple nouns to amazing new concepts in the ancient world.
He becomes not merely a shepherd.....
but my Shepherd.
Not merely a strong tower,
but my Strong Tower.
Not merely a fortress,
but my Fortress.
Not merely a light,
but my Light.
Not merely a deliverer,
but my Deliverer.
Not merely a song,
but my Song.
What a wild and new idea of God this was to the ancients, who only knew jealous, warring, vindictive "gods" who cared little for the heart and soul of a human being.
And consider this.....
The Hebrew letters carry meanings all their own, and add depth and new dimensions to Hebrew words.
Some Jewish traditions compare this tiny letter to a shofar.
It looks like a shofar, doesn't it?
A shofar is a ram's horn, called a "trumpet" in Scripture.
It was first heard on Mt. Sinai, out of the smoke when God appeared. (Exodus 19:19)
Its piercing sound is said to be Divine,
Cutting to the inner sanctum of the soul, with the message, "Arise!"
To "follow" His ancient ways,
To repent of our own paths and return to His paths of Life.
The "yud" is added to the names of God and this powerful "little shofar" adds a brand new intimacy to His attributes.
As I allow His "shofar" (His Holy Spirit) in my own life ~ He invites me out of my slumber, and calls me to arise and follow.
In the middle of this crazed modern world we live in, we are invited to follow His wondrous (and mysterious) ways.
We are called away from the gods of this world ~ who never deliver on their promises,
To enjoy intimacy with the One who created us and cares for the depths of our souls.
The God of the Universe becomes *my* God.

So how DOES one approximate the Divine voice?  The Prince of Egypt famously did it with a whole chorus.  Max Stern takes a similar approach, adding strings and shofars to the chorus.  The Divine voice is said to be strange, awe-inspiring, causing everyone who hears it to tremble.  Probably weird and unearthly, too, given whose voice it’s meant to be.  The lion roars, the shofars sound, and the Divine voice does in fact make us tremble on this stage.

Happy New Year!
9/17/23
Right now I'm celebrating the Jewish New Year, called Rosh Hashanah, which translates to "head of the year".  It is a lunar new year, since the Jewish calendar is lunar.  We celebrate by having large family dinners featuring apples and honey, and attending synagogue for special services where the shofar (carved rams horn) is blown.  I baked apple bread and traditional honey cake and had a great time celebrating with my family.
For anyone who celebrates, L'Shanah Tovah!  May you have a sweet and happy New Year!
Next we start preparing for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, which comes ten days after Rosh Hashanah, and is the most important holiday in the Jewish tradition.  I have a few days before that, though, so I'm trying to get some writing done!
The Prince has reached 32k words, which is excellent!  I have some really fun scenes left to write, and then an epilogue that will hopefully help set up book three.  I do think I'll reach 50k, but it'll be close.  However, I am hoping that when I go back and edit, I'll be able to increase the word count by expanding some scenes.  I'm still only on the first draft, with two or three editing rounds to go before I will send it for submission, but I'm really liking how it's turning out so far!
Speaking of editing to increase word count, there's a call for spring-themed stories and I immediately thought of my short story Hadash Aviv, meaning New Spring, that was never republished.  Hadash Aviv is one of my few contemporary action/adventure stories.  I've always really liked it and was very disappointed I couldn't figure out a way to republish it.  Of course, the call is for stories a minimum of 15k words, and Hadash Aviv was originally written for a call for stories less than 10k.  I have begun expanding this story, with a couple of new scenes and more description in the existing story.  I basically need to double the length of the story.  So far, I've added over 1k, so I only have 6k more to write before I can decide whether it's worth submitting.  I'll keep everyone updated on my progress!
I got to see the first draft of the cover for Twin Elements, which comes out in exactly a month on October 17th, and my jaw dropped.  I can't wait to share it, because it is amazing!  Aside from that, it's been a quiet week, but I hope to have more good news to share very soon.

Before we had the internet for recipes, my family — all families — had cookbooks. There were shelves full of them, and they were stained with fat splatters of Worcestershire sauce and other remnants of being thumbed through while cooking. Their spines ached, and their pages were stuffed with ad hoc bookmarks and indecipherable notes.
In my mother’s kitchen, some volumes got more love than others. Sheila Lukins and Julee Rosso’s The Silver Palate was a family favorite. It came out in 1982, five years before I was born, and my mom’s takes on its recipes for spinach-feta phyllo triangles, wild mushroom soup, cheese straws, and banana bread were my childhood staples. Still, when confronted with bananas fast over-ripening, my mom pulls out The Silver Palate. I do the same. The resulting bread is hearty, banana-y, and dense with crunchy walnuts.
It’s almost Rosh Hashanah, which means it’s time to break out The Silver Palate again. Its Chicken Marbella is the star of my family’s Rosh Hashanah dinner, year after year. My mom is a wonderful cook, and for her, cookbooks offer more suggestions than rules. She consults a recipe, then adds, subtracts, and tweaks to make it her own. But when it comes to Chicken Marbella, my mom is a purist. “It’s pretty much perfect,” she says. “The olives, the capers, the prunes. A ton of garlic. A ton of oregano. No need to mess with that.”
I was born on the second day of Rosh Hashanah 31 years ago. Maybe that’s why I’ve always had a sweet spot for the Jewish New Year.
But that’s just the beginning. September is a time of fresh starts. New school years that demand virgin notebooks and shiny new pens, not yet gnawed during bleary eyed nights trying to make deadlines. Trees that illuminate themselves into vivid oranges and reds. Soft scarves put back into rotation. The resonating wail of the shofar piercing the air.
And Chicken Marbella. The dish is probably The Silver Palate’s most famous. The New York Times called it a classic, and so has nearly everyone else. The thing is, it’s sort of a strange recipe. Combining prunes, capers (“with a bit of juice”), green olives, and a whole head (!!) of garlic isn’t exactly an obvious move. There’s a lot going on.
Yet, it’s a genius concoction. The briny capers and olives give an edge to the sweetness imparted by the prunes and brown sugar. The marinade infuses incredible depth into the chicken, which comes out unfailingly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The prunes plump up in the chicken juices as the dish cooks, and I always make sure to pluck out a few extra onto my plate. The resulting sauce is good enough to drink.
My mom is weirdly opposed to sweet mains and sides, even on Rosh Hashanah when they’re tradition. (As for me, I have a serious sweet tooth.) But she makes an exception for this classic, and I can see why. It’s the perfect holiday dish, easy to make ahead of time — it just gets better the longer it marinates in the fridge. It’s great served hot, and equally delicious at room temperature. No need to spend time in the kitchen when guests begin to arrive. And the leftovers are stellar, too.
Plus, it’s a really good friend to round challah. But then the family controversy — raisins or no raisins — gets evoked. My mom buys both to make everyone happy, the way the Chicken Marbella does. With chunks of challah, we all scoop up the last of the sauce on our plates. There’s no better way to ring in a new year.

The Sound Of The Trumpet
Tumblr media
In the Old Testament, when people heard the sound of a trumpet, it could mean one of many things. The New Testament only has two meanings: the gathering of the church and disaster. In the Old Testament, the sound of the trumpet either came from a ram's horn called a shofar or one made of metal. The ram's horn produced a loud sound. The one made from silver or brass gave a more direct and focused sound. In the Book of Numbers, God instructed Moses how to make and use the metal horns. Make two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp. Numbers 10:2 Each sound of the trumpet or trumpets conveyed specific instructions. Using trumpets as a signaling device may have begun in the Book of Numbers. But it has caught on through the years. In the history of our country, the cavalry used different tunes on the trumpet to convey different messages. When soldiers heard the trumpet sound, they knew exactly how to respond. Moses told the Israelites how God wanted him to communicate with them by using the sound of the trumpet. Some signals used one trumpet sound, while others used both trumpets. When both trumpets are blown, everyone must gather before you at the entrance of the Tabernacle. But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders—the heads of the clans of Israel—must present themselves to you. Numbers 10:3-4
People Had to Pay Close Attention to the Trumpet Call
So, the people had to pay close attention each time they heard the sound of a trumpet. They also needed to decipher whether the sound came from one trumpet or both. - When you sound the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward. - When you sound the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. - You must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on. - But when you call the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal. Numbers 10:5-7 God's instructions to Moses about the trumpets went beyond moving the camp and meeting together. They could also use them to their benefit when they got to the promised land. When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Numbers 10:9 The Lord also wanted them to use trumpets in their celebrations and festivals. Their sound added to the gladness of the occasion and reminded God of His covenant with them. Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the Lord your God. Numbers 10:10
Tumblr media
We Should Listen for the Sound of the Trumpet
I am waiting and listening for a trumpet sound to come blaring out of heaven. The Apostle Paul reported that a shout, the voice of the archangel, and a trumpet will call the church home. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 God used the trumpet sound in the Old Testament for various purposes. Paul told us twice that God will only use that one trumpet sound to gather His church. It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 1 Corinthians 15:52
Tumblr media
The Sound of the Trumpet During the Tribulation
The earth will experience seven years of tribulation with the church safely in heaven. During that time, the trumpet will sound seven more times. Seven angels will each blow a trumpet one at a time. With each sound, the earth and its inhabitants will suffer some kind of devastation or disaster. We find them in Revelation 8-11. The First Four Trumpets The first angel blew his trumpet, and hail and fire mixed with blood were thrown down on the earth. One-third of the earth was set on fire, one-third of the trees were burned, and all the green grass was burned. Revelation 8:7 Then the second angel blew his trumpet, and a great mountain of fire was thrown into the sea. One-third of the water in the sea became blood, Revelation 8:8 Then the third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from the sky, burning like a torch. It fell on one-third of the rivers and on the springs of water. Revelation 8:10 Then the fourth angel blew his trumpet, and one-third of the sun was struck, and one-third of the moon, and one-third of the stars, and they became dark. And one-third of the day was dark, and also one-third of the night. Revelation 8:12 The Last Three Trunpets Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen to earth from the sky, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. When he opened it, smoke poured out as though from a huge furnace, and the sunlight and air turned dark from the smoke. Then locusts came from the smoke and descended on the earth, and they were given power to sting like scorpions. They were told not to harm the grass or plants or trees, but only the people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. Revelation 9:1-4 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice speaking from the four horns of the gold altar that stands in the presence of God. And the voice said to the sixth angel who held the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great Euphrates River." Then the four angels who had been prepared for this hour and day and month and year were turned loose to kill one-third of all the people on earth. I heard the size of their army, which was 200 million mounted troops. Revelation 9:13-16 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven: "The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever." "The nations were filled with wrath, but now the time of your wrath has come. It is time to judge the dead and reward your servants the prophets, as well as your holy people, and all who fear your name, from the least to the greatest. It is time to destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth." Revelation 11:15,18
Focus on Hearing the Trumpet Sound from Heaven
I realize not everything in these verses in Revelation makes sense to you. But then you really don't need to understand them. You just need to be ready for when the following happens. - You hear the commanding shout from heaven, - The voice of the archangel, - And the sound of the trumpet call of God. That is when the Lord will come down from heaven and meet you in the air! Lord, you have used the sound of the trumpet throughout human history. We are waiting for you to sound the trumpet, calling us to join you.im? I believe You will enjoy reading these posts on the return of Christ  - Is The Church Ready Now For Christ's Return? - Are You Ready For A New Beginning? - Be Ready, No One Knows when Jesus Will Return - Are You Ready To Meet Jesus In The Air? Since the post I reconsidered and came to conclusion we need to judge books, movies and game seperately, as they drastically vary in their depictions. All are still controlled and approved by Rowling tho, so all is still reflection of her, wether intentional or not. She also went insane since then/I learned about it since them.
Books:
goblins who have monopoly on banking and are simultaneously doncemned for having it despite nobody trying to offer replacements [mirroring the way Jews were pushed to work in banking as Christians saw dealing with lending as 'unclean', only for Jews to be then blamed for being the only ones to work with money and accused of 'secretly doing it to control the world' which is antisemitic propaganda];
goblins who sell wizards items with assumption they are only borrowing them, which ofc means goblins are thieves when they try to reclaim said items after buyer's death (and not that wizards are exploiting their customs) [replicating a racist 'Indian giver' trope 1-to-1];
Griphook who choses to steal a shiny sword while he knows it would make Voldemort win [replicating 'all Jews steal to get their money' antisemitic propaganda];
Movies only:
the first movie has starts of david all over the Gringotts set [ replicating casual antisemitism of 'all bankers are Jews];
goblin's hook-nosed design [replicating casual antisemitic craricature];
Games only:
Hogwarts Legacy having a plot of 'Jews goblins are stealing your children to take their blood and use it for matza spell that will kill their enemies' [mirroring real life antisemitig propaganda 1-to-1];
said game having a literal Shofar as 'goblin trinket' [using real life Jewish relic];
Misc. Rowling 'wtf' moments:
to question 'are there Jewish wizards' Rowling answers 'Anthony Goldstein, Jewish wizard' [casual antisemitism];
to question about religion in Hogwarts, Rowling answered 'there are all religions except wicca' [which is less antisemitism ad more general colonialism and culture erasure];
that time she engaged in Holocaus/Nazi crimes denial on twitter against George Takei, claiming no queer people have been target of Nazis' genocide despte the fact that German institute studying queer people have been one of the first targets of the books burnings - specificaly the same place whre first sexual reassignment surgery was performed [I know people have used just 'Holocaust denial' and I understand it's more widely used term, but she specificaly targeted queers and trans people in particular and I know Holocaust is specificaly connected to Jewish genocide - I think it's important to keep in mind that RADFEM ideaology that this supports is a proven and studied gateway to far-right politics, including full Holocaust denial];
the fact that in aftermath of the above, of all the people who spoke out against her she cherry-picked a Jewish journalist to threten legal actions to force them to make public apology;
Rowling also attempted to start a hate-campaign against said journalist for expressing sympathy with Palestinian resistance in the face of Israel's colonization and genocide of Palestine, which is consistent with her support of Israel and public opposition to actions against it;
So, dad’s wanting some ‘proof’ that the goblins in Harry Potter are an analog of Jews… asked for some credible arguments and/or proof since he doesn’t seem to take my interpretations seriously much, if ever (I still love the man, and he is willing to learn, so no vitriol!).
If anyone’s willing to provide either some arguments for, or against, or links to posts or articles about this comparison, it would be fantastic.
My short term memory is not the best, and my long term is hit or miss due to health issues, but having links, articles, arguments to refer to help me a lot.
Dad’s not a bad dude. He just doesn’t think as critically of fiction as our generation(s) do. He’s way-tail end of boomers, sorta Generation ‘Jones’ (it’s a thing!) along with my mother so you get the sort of standards of proof I need. Though as a Canadian and with his general personality, he’s much better at admitting when he can be wrong.
Thanks!

Oh, ffs.
@themothwomen I'm Jewish. I have Jewish in my url. I have it in my bio. In the post you're replying to, I talk about the significance of the Shofar - a Jewish ceremonial instrument - to me personally. There's no way you can miss that I'm Jewish. Don't come to me with "Jewish people have come forward" - you don't get to use them to shut down my voice. This is not okay:
Tumblr media
I said this on a different post, but I'll put it here because I saw a lot of "if you look at the goblins and you see Jews, you're the antisemitic one."
People tell stories about people.
That's how speculative fiction works.
SciFi robot rebellions? They have their roots in the idea of workers or enslaved people revolting against those that exploit them. I think a book of this kind is how we even got the word robot.
The Aristocats - not even speculative fiction, just a story about cats - is about people, and it has issues of racism. I'm not calling people cats if I point out "there's a racist stereotype in those cats."
If you can't see something like this unless it's named - if it can't be antisemitic unless the character is Jewish in canon - you have an issue of media literacy.
I literally collected the antisemitic stereotypes I noticed in the goblins TWICE and it's linked in the post you commented on. Shoving harmful stereotypes onto a fictional race is a very common thing in storytelling, and it's often discussed by the communities affected. Jewish people aren't the first to have a conversation like this. It doesn't become harmless just because they took all the stereotypes about us and put them on a fictional fantasy race.
Tumblr media
I don't care if she wasn't part of the development. That means MORE PEOPLE are at fault, it doesn't absolve her. She had 25 years to acknowledge the antisemitism in her works and she didn't. One apology, one "I didn't know I was writing antisemitic stereotypes, it's good that people are talking about it so others can avoid this pitfall." And she didn't even do that. No, she added "preventing the holocaust" as one of GRINDELWALD'S stated goals. Now she's approving of a game that doubles down and even expands on those antisemitic stereotypes. She exploited the memory of the holocaust in the creation of her Death Eaters and then proceeded to disrespect it with the antisemitism she put into her work without acknowledging it.
An army of trans characters won't undo the harm she does in real life, and the people who created a game that perpetuates her cultural revelance can't say they don't support her - as individuals they might not approve of her opinions, but their actions support her.
Fuck off with "battling hate with hate." I won't embrace people who are indifferent to trans genocide.

I have found in my attempts at using dating apps that the media/entertainment recommendations of my matches tend to stick with me a lot longer than the people do. I say this to be funny, not for pity. Months ago I matched with a book-loving girl who gave me the perfect book rec. I told her about my blog being Queer and Jewish-based, and she immediately suggested Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott. It took a while for it to get to me on Libby, but it was absolutely worth the wait!
Thistlefoot is about two magical siblings, Isaac and Bellatine Yaga. They are left a living house from their great-great-grandmother, Baba Yaga. Isaac and Bellatine are young adults now and haven't seen each other in 6 years. They don't trust each other, but they're willing to work out what to do with the house. Isaac has some debts he wants to clear and Bellatine wants the freedom that comes with a house that can walk. So they decide to continue their family business of puppet shows for one year, adding a stage to the house. Unfortunately, the house wasn't the only thing Baba Yaga left them. The past is coming back through an old enemy who wants the house destroyed.
Folklore, the past, and the concept that the body remembers trauma are all very important to Thistlefoot. Nethercott did a lot of research on folklore while writing the book. She looked into her Russian roots and quite a lot of American stories. She incorporated as much as she could into the book and wrote her own in as well. Folklore also affected how the story was told. Most books in third person have a narrative to explain what's happening outside of dialogue, but it's rare for them to feel like a character. In Thistlefoot, you aren't just reading a story, you're being told one. Perhaps it's Nethercott inserting herself into the story. Throughout, you also get interjections from Thistlefoot, the house, as she tells you interesting, but misleading information about the past.
I absolutely loved the experience of reading Thistlefoot. I didn't really know what was going to happen as I went through, even down to the last page. Every bit of the present, past, and history unfolded when the time was right. The story centers on a group that doesn't want to care about each other, but can't help themselves. Isaac and Bellatine are joined by a musical trio that just wants to fix the world and a girl that Bellatine brings to life with her animation powers. Basically, everyone has something about themselves that they aren't sharing, and that absolutely includes the house. Some pieces are revealed more cinematically than others, but they all contribute to why this book is so popular.
Despite the fact that Baba Yaga is not traditionally Jewish, I think it was a smart move to make that her religion. Russia's history of pogroms and antisemitism plays an important role in the story. There are many happier aspects of Judaism incorporated as well, such as traditional names, the use of Yiddish, and a shofar. Alongside the Jewish representation is queer representation. Bellatine has a romance with another woman, Baba Yaga was happier as a widow than married, Isaac had complex feelings for his best friend, and Sparrow the musician is non-binary. More diversity than this is included in Thistlefoot, making the book that much more relatable.
Nethercott spins an epic tale and race against time in Thistlefoot. If you're looking for a cinematic book that you can feel like a part of, I highly recommend this one. Puppetry, folklore, and memory come together to tell a tale you won't forget!

Genuinely what did you hope to accomplish from a comment this stupid.
We know you only care about Jews as far as you can use them as a political pawn. Everyone has told you ad nauseam that the goblins' appearance did not include a hooked nose in the book, whereas the decision to do so in the film was firmly in the hands of Chris Columbus, but I haven't seen you shit on him for this. No wonder- he's male. Actual Jews have been telling you for months that you're huffing paint with this shit. Jewish orgs have defended JKR and declared her as a friend while educating onlookers on the history of goblins in literature with nuance but you don't seem to give a shit. Jews have told you what a shofar actually is and you don't seem to give a shit. JKR came out as one of very few influential voices defending Israel and you have the gal to pretend otherwise, because ultimately upsetting you is more important than the Jewish cause. If you see a wealthy nonhuman creature and think "JEW" that's your fault, and it's very consistent with you wearing the filleted skin of the Jewish cause in order to manufacture legitimacy for unrelated bullshit which, as you know, devalues Jewish women just as much as all others. Perhaps more given the trans identified male's love for pornifying religious garb and loudly professed history of naziism.
How dare you water down the word Nazi away from antisemitism in your sidebar and condescend to speak about this? You're wrong, you're aware of this, and that's why you're making these desperate replies. Being such a slave to your delusions that you need to play-act in public like this to outrun their dissolution is exquisitely embarrassing.
Absolutely living for JKR "disappointing" antisemtic radfems rn
Is there any time she hasn't been based
