Lesson Learned
I learned a lesson, don’t write everything directly into Tumblr for when it inevitably crashes.
I’m a bit annoyed I have to write this again but alas, it was my own fault.
I looked at an artist called Mitchell Whitelaw, whose creative practice often involves coming up with unique ways to express data in a way that will hopefully instigate change. I looked at his work of ‘Measuring Cup’ in particular. Which took the form of a 3D printed object resembling that of a disposable plastic cup. The cup was designed in order to raise attention to increasing temperature over time, particularly in Sydney. The cup features 150 unique layers, all of which have a changing radius proportionate to the average recorded temperature for every month since 1859. The final product tapers similarly to a cup, raising insight to the fact that there has been gradual, yet a consistent increase of temperature and an obvious overall change between the base and the lip of the cup.
Tumblr media
The final object is interesting as while it resembles a crushed plastic cup, the final shape is also fairly aesthetically pleasing. I really like how there is no discernable reason for the two to be linked and without explanation, it is just a cup, however with additional information, it communicates information that is in fact very easy to interpret.

FINAL PRODUCT
Glitches are known to evoke emotions from humans whether it be positive (in a rare scale) or negative (which happens at a higher percentage).
These negative emotions can vary from discomfort to frustration. Using that as the driving theme for this artwork, I attempted to make a piece that can be relatable to others or what is usually common to invoke such feelings. Media errors, in a world now heavily reliant on technology, is able to provide such discomfort to many in order to be perfect. This is due to the evolution of technology, it is expectant for such to be perfect and pleasing for the audiences.
As seen in the glitch-based artworks of Sara Cywner, Arvoy, Michael Betancourt, Heitor Magno, (whom inspired my work), all provided their own perk on their take of glitch. (Refer to ‘ARTISTS USED AS INSPIRATIONS / RESEARCH’) What they all have in common is that their artwork consists of either aesthetically simplistic, consisting a small colour palette, or ’eye straining’ details which can be achieved through a large amount of objects grouped together with contrasting colours.  This, in turn, would make the viewers feel uncomfortable or even nauseous at times.
The short clip of the glitchy video is to simulate the brain recalling a memory, however every time it does so, it is distorted.
‘Our brains are constantly betraying us, transforming our memories every time we think about them’.
The fact that our memories are distorting at every recall is an unpredictable irregularity in a system. The ‘system’ being our brain as the brain is often compared to being a supercomputer. This is the basis idea of the media artwork
In order to keep the theme of discomfort to be drawn from the audience, I made sure to not only have the video consist of juxtaposing colours but also keeping the audio in mind. It is a fact that humans are sensitive to sounds, as the auditory system is one of the key sensors we need for survival. In turn, this allows us to enjoy music. Thus editing the audio is essential to create discomfort.
It is known that we dislike interruptions, buffering and an overload of sounds in one track thus I did exactly that to hopefully create the uncomfortable atmosphere. This is shown through the deliberate pauses scattered throughout the audio clip. The pauses symbolise the missing patches of memories as once being recalled, the brain can only remember so much within a ton of other memories in storage. There is also audio overlays from other videos to represent that memories are all connected together through various objects.
The clip is compiled with several recording made throughout the week effectively adding onto the theme of memory.
There is one clip that been repeated, ie the female sleeping, and has been deliberately flipped opposite later with distortion effects to further prove the fact of a memory being recalled gets distorted.
The female model was also cropped instead of using the full clip is intended to make the figure stand out and be differentiated from the ‘memories’ thus there was no effect on the model. It is to look as if we are entering her mind and the ‘memories', differentiated by lighter and contrasting colours, are flowing through the mind even when she’s asleep.
There were also traces of my previous experiments showcased in the clip as well in an attempt of making ‘easter eggs’. This is because easter eggs can be classified as a ‘pleasant glitch’, as it is considered a bonus for those who notice the small details. These easter eggs include, experiment 2 and experiment 3 in form of footage. However these ‘pleasant glitches’ were surely dominated by the ‘unpleasant glitches’ of colour choices and clash of several footages being over layered to produce a very busy image too much for the eye to handle to interrupt the audiences attention.
The clip is also deliberately short as it is to simulate how fast a brain can think and recall memories despite how long ago the event occurred, and the many thoughts that pass through the mind.
Nevertheless, the entire clip is a representation of media errors (in a simulation of what goes through the brain). The clip can also be perceived as a rendering glitch, unable to export the entire file clean and smooth.
Hopefully, through the use of audio and visual composition, the viewers would feel uncomfortable from these glitches.

For assignment 2 I have been doing further research into the effects of fast fashion on both our environment and the people who are making garments.
I’ve started my research through watching “The True Cost” and have further expanded on it by reading “Waste and Want; A Social History of Trash” by Susan Strasser, “A Fashion Odyssey; Progress in Fashion & Sustainability” and “Overdressed; The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion” by Elizabeth Cline.
Though my poster was about the effects of fast fashion on our environment I’m feeling that the devastating effects of our consumer culture on societies and garment makers in third world countries is what I’d like to represent in my work for assignment 2. The two topics are so intertwined that I feel I’ll be able to relate the two easily and hopefully create an impactful work that represents a huge problem.
For my first experimentations I’ll be working with felting dryer lint using a few different felting techniques.

Experiment 3: Geometry
For this experiment I tried to make basic shapes from geometry, taking inspiration from Saul Bass’ poster work. The simplistic style is rather child-like and unassuming - furthering the simple message for how we construct gender.

Assignment 2 - Artist Statement
My final artwork is a product of my initial poster and the concept produced for assignment 1, my series of experiments and my research into artists that used walking as a basis for their artworks. I produced a film utilising the visuals of a short walking journey and a commentary of the experience while on the journey. The commentary was delayed for added effect.
All my experiments used walking in some form and all were completed in pairs using the same journey to produce the experiment. My first 2 experiments didn’t present any specific idea and had no particular purpose other than exploring ways of communicating a particular journey I took. My next 2 experiments strayed from the usual method of description and convey a particular path. In These experiments, I used audio from the walk and while walking, I wrote down the interactions and ‘communication’ I had with other people. This pair explored the more abstract experience and allowed the audience to imagine what the journey would feel like. The final experiments were done in a different environment that was more organic and natural. These experiments explored the closed off visual experience and the physical feeling of walking. The particular methods I chose allows the audience to really immerse themselves in the experience and calls on the audience to use their imaginations using these 2 abstract descriptions.
To produce my final work, I chose a path in Surry Hills to walk. I continued the theme of using pairs of different methods to describe and demonstrate a journey. This particular pairing was a mix of audio, visual and sensory experience explained through a voice over. While walking I filmed the visuals of what I saw when walking and at the same time recorded my voice explaining the experience of walking. This included describing things I heard, the feeling and atmosphere and directions I took, a lot like a commentary on my journey as I walked it. When I was editing the audio, I found that the microphone picked up sounds of the environment, like the wind, my breathing, crackling of leaves and cars driving past. Though they were a distraction from my voice, it added to the atmosphere and feeling as if the audience were joining me on the walk. The background sounds which are often ignored added realism to the walk and the changing tones in my voice some emotion to the walk.
The film explores how the different senses have a play in communicating a journey and for the audience to distinguish between the film and the voice over. This film uses walking in an urban setting as the subject and the method to explore how different forms of communication affect how the audience perceive and understand a journey and can experience it. When matching the audio and visuals, I decided to delay the audio by a few seconds, this created a confused and staggered experience.

Assignment 2 Statement
In assignment one, it inspired me with lots of ideas to continue working on the relationship between dirty and clean. My final is created by various of conceptual ideas from different artists. The idea of my work focusing on how people view differently towards an object, which inspired me about daily life example, different views towards graffiti walls. People may see things differently based on their perception and beliefs. Searching graffiti works created by Futura 2000 and more research on different stakeholders’ comment on graffiti walls allows me to have a clearer idea to do more experimentations on how people viewing things differently.
Yet, Working on the coffee and dirty water drawing where I inspired by the coffee art by Angel Sarkela-Saur and Andrew Saur advised me to think about the concept between dirty and clean more comprehensively. These two drawing reflected people judgement on the object before knowing what and how is the drawing being drawn, most of their comments changed after they get more information about the drawing. Thus, it slightly enriched my idea to let me think about how do thoughts changed even towards the same object.
Processing with materials experimentations allows me to compare and choose the best material I should use for my final. Carried out a variety of materials enable me to select which material should I use, such as excluding the material- coffee as it’s failed or hardly find on the plastic and cardboard. Also using a variety of materials allows me to choose the most suitable, it reflected the cardboard and was easily soften by liquid-based material and they were hard to be seen on styrofoam board since the liquid will easily run off too. Although this may seem to be a failure yet I think it enables me to compare with materials and find the most suitable one. Besides, this experiments also inspired me to think about the external factor affecting the perception of the people. Example of the artwork form Tom Torluemke, his artwork is a floor installation and the artwork was affected by the external factor since audience may be confused whether they should step on it or not. But after receiving information that people are allowed to step on it, they completely changed their views towards the same object. This artwork reflected the relationship between how people change their views and encouraged me to create my final.
For my final, the material I used were all based on the previous experimentations since I’ve already compared the differences on using different materials. And the colours will be based on black and white since it creates a huge contrast on the object and with the background I placed in previous experimentations. I cut the plastic into size larger than three A3 paper and started up by doodling on it. After that, I put it on the street outside my college. People who value the plastic won’t step on it, people who think it is dirty and will step on it. It shows how people view things differently towards the same object. And the plastic is now full of shoeprint, print formed by the bicycle and dust. Later on, I hanged the plastic on a black colour of the floor and a white coloured wall, which is similar to the colour I used to draw. People start to comment differently based on their own thoughts and perception before they were informed that the drawing was actually partly make from the print brought from the street.
The entire concept between dirty and clean here is that there’s always a line defining dirty and clean and people believed two are separate things. Yet, the same object can actually be dirty and clean at the same time, the reasons affecting how people view differently is their own perception. Perception differences may cause by different experience from the individuals, cultural differences. These may affect the value of the individuals, beliefs and thinking, therefore there is a variability between how views diff from people. And the external factor and the availability of receiving information also impact on how people viewing on the same object differently. (722 words)

EXP 2/ 1.2 - Freezing Technology
An experimentation that is revised from the previous one. Since the jelly failed being transparent to see details within, perhaps moving to ice would help the problem. This experiment was also the prototype that leads into the next experiment of freezing actual technology. [Refer to EXP2/2.5 - Freezing Technology (Digital)]
The narrative of this follows the same philosophy of the first exp. Money being what we use for trading and such, has much value in our daily life. (Even though money in form of notes and coins are not considered as digital technology but rather is physical) Encasing such valuable technology into a block of ice results into an interruption for the technology to be in use. Thus glitch in the real world.

Assignment 2 700 word statement
Throughout history many designers/artists have explored the topic of constructed binaries and how art and design question them and bring new light to the meanings behind these “pairs”. In assignment one, I have decided to focus on man/woman, poor/rich, ugly/beautiful, and colors, showed the idea of “same right, same opportunities”. I really like about the concepts of my assignment, yes in this world, we need same right and equally everyone.
In this assignment two, I want to scope and focus only on Ugly/beautiful binary in mainly Korea and around the world.
In South Korea, as in much of the world, the beauty myth is still a reality for women. The pursuit of beauty is often an expectation, especially for those who seek social and professional success. The reason why I doing this binary of ugly/beautiful is , some job vacancies ads put the specific area that they want for example, applicants must be neat, beautiful ect. And also from point of applicants, some applicants are put their photos in resume to get a faster response from employees because they think they are beautiful. I think this kind of situation is unfair for some applicants. Yes, Of course, being good-looking or beautiful is great, but in relation to work, it should be their professionalism and skill that should be judged.
Physical appearance is too closely tied to protected categories, like sex and age that can generally be easily discerned from looking at a photo. In South Korea, though, photography studios catering to job applicants are common. Based on the response rate in the study, an attractive man needs to send an average of five resume  with a photo to get one interview. An ordinary-looking man needs to send 11 résumés with a photo to get a single interview. For this reason, South Korean President is looking into getting rid of requirements for photos on résumés; they should have done those decades ago. Requiring that is probably one of the biggest drivers of plastic surgery and low self-esteem.
I asked couple of question to myself: why is this happening? how to change it ? In this case, I did some experiments . Another research i’ve concerned is about “Job CV resume “. i see most of people put their photos in CV. Why ? Does is require for the job?. Attaching photos to resumes instigates looks-ism and leads to burdening expenses for job applicants. Because of this, i want to use grime art photo and put on example Resume and want to know the employees responses. Will they look the appearance or skill? In my opinion, depending on their appearances, the opportunities should not be created.  In the experiment, I used “Grime art” for plastic surgery ad. The reason i used about grime art is most people see this grime art first time, they said it gross or weird art. On the other hand, ‘Ugly’. For this ads,  Korean government announced it would phase out plastic surgery ads in subway stations by 2020, Media reports cited public outcry, with over a thousand complains, and requests asking the stations to take down such advertising. I agree with this situation because every people have his or her own kind of beauty of inside and outside in this world, there is no need to be flawless beauty. So i made some ugly advertisement poster related to this. The question is “Will people still want to do the plastic surgery after what they saw this kind of advertisement?”
I always see the products ads, in ads, they always used beautiful person who is related with the product or not. I really do not want that kind of ads if possible, i can understand the business, the money, product , more into customers. but can entertain with another way like above examples.
Overall , none of us should judge what they have been through. My decision was a result of being exposed to Korean women who were smart, young, attractive, successful — but innately unhappy. All the people are important and treat must be treat equally.

Tumblr media
I started by collecting some sound effects - An air-con,, some tone and a recording of a text to speech robot saying WWWWWWWWHAAAAAAATTTTT IIIIIIISSSSSS IIIIIIITTTTTT.
Interestingly the text the voice recording glitched out at it resulted in it making weird noises.
I took those sounds, put them into Adobe Audition, lowered the pitch and slowed the pitch to increase the base level and combined them. This is what it sounds like...

ADAD1002 Assignment2 Experiment#2 Research Suzanne Sarnoff used water-filled vessels in a variety of shapes and sizes, Suzanne’s photographs are intriguing in their distortion of reality. Through cylinders and glass, the physical props are fragmented, appearing almost as if they have been glitched digitally. Suzanne uses refraction, bold colors and directional light to achieve such results. The alternating of size, shape and position of these water-filled vessels provide endless compositions. ‘Perspective’ is a playful examination of the everyday, challenging the singular identity of the commonplace objects to showcase a multitude of visual expressions. In my experiment, I want to change the perspective (clean environment v.s. garbage) that people see the world as well by using this technique from Suzanne Saroff. Therefore, I criticized the uncivilized actions, and people will have a second consideration for their daily behaviors.
