some thoughts on dark souls 2

well, here we are. a while ago i posted some thoughts on dark souls 3, which i now will update by saying it ended up becoming one of my favorite games ever, period. more than ds1 and elden ring i think (?). beat it multiple times, had a lot of fun fighting bosses in different ways, had fun with people online, been on the grind for getting all the achievements, been looking into installing the randomizer mod, etc. it's thanks to the buttery smooth UX ds3 provides that i got to enjoy my time with it so much. i cannot say the same for ds2.
not to reignite an age old debate but i don't think ds2 is really all that good... or at the very least i think the stuff it gets 'wrong' ends up overshadowing the stuff it really does get right. if you like the game that's fine obviously, i can see the appeal and i'm not here to say "DARK SOULS 2 SUCKS!" or anything. i'll list some stuff i liked and some i didn't so you can see where i'm coming from:
(SOME) STUFF I DIDN'T LIKE:
the ADP/AGL stats. i can't fathom why they thought it was a good idea to tie your i-frames to a stat. ds1 got this right the first time. this is genuinely beyond me.
movement/animations. ds1 could at times feel like a weird take on turn based combat in real time. it worked. ds2 just feels sluggish, on top of not being super responsive. you can be locked on but if you roll and attack your attack is stuck to the direction where you roll and you completely whiff. was ds1 vanilla also like this? i only played the remastered and it's, you know, how it should be. also where are the i-frames for going through a fog door or opening a chest??
the healing system. why did they feel the need to split them into flasks and gems? i certainly never felt the need to have two different healing items, except for the only sometimes useful feature that you can use gems while still moving. didn't see much use in the fact that one heals you slightly faster than the other. if anything having to manage two separate resources, one finite and the other not, was a bit annoying. ds3 went on to improve on this with only flasks; there were more of them and you could move while drinking them.
the menu. a bit finicky to traverse. more on this later.
the hitboxes. jfc. on top of being horrible there's very little feedback for when you're being hit. you just see your health bar decrease seemingly out of nowhere sometimes.
the enemy encounters... are actually fine for the most part. in some sections it's actually hilarious, in a good way (enemies blasting through locked doors? the constant invasions? the forlorn coming to get you if you die a lot, or the pursuer randomly popping in? actually funny stuff). it just got really annoying to deal with them at times for the other reasons listed above, plus also having to deal with some of the most baffling level design in the series.
the level design. the gulch? the undead crypt? good god.
the bosses. they're ok-ish for the most part, though most of them aren't very memorable and it's not really super engaging to fight them because of the combat mechanics. the dudes in armor are tight though and i wish there were even more.
the npc dialogue. these people just never stop their yammering do they. probably the single funniest player message i've ever seen in one of these games was just next to the last bonfire where aldia talks to you. the message just said "right, right". i laughed out loud for a solid while.
(SOME) STUFF I DID LIKE:
the story & themes. i think this is the most realized 'vision' of a plot in a dark souls base game. it's really interesting and it actually makes you care about some stuff, and it also makes you feel a certain way about the world design, which is nonsensical in a cool way. i get that in order to get some of this across they had to write more dialogue but at least you can mash A through that (at the risk of missing something relevant).
the human effigies. a step up from the humanity system from ds1, that would ultimately end up getting revised to perfection in ds3 with the embers.
the graphics. obviously this came out some years after ds1, but for a game that still released on the same console generation as its predecessor, it's a bit wild how much more they could get out of the systems at the time. also the art design in some areas are in my opinion a big step up (thinking of heide's tower of flame, the walk up to drangleic castle, the dragon aerie and other random hallways where the lighting got used in striking ways) and that also helps. (i don't wanna let ds1 off the hook here just for being 'the first one' though; by 2011 the industry already knew what they were doing, and fromsoftware had already released demon's souls prior to it. it is a bit crazy that a game from 2011 looks and feels like that but i say that with a lot of love).
the menu. they figured out a way to make you visualize your character while at the same time trying different armor pieces on (with your character even taking a slightly different stance while the menu was open, as if they were posing), and then they went back on that for ds3. a shame.
majula. obviously the coziest hub.
bonfire ascetics. really, really cool item that i'm baffled doesn't exist in some other shape or form in subsequent titles. i get that they could be used to farm to get an obscene amount of souls but it'd be really cool to have the oportunity to re-fight bosses in other souls games without having to beat the game and getting up to a certain point again. maybe like halve the souls they give out so it's clear that they're there as an optional challenge instead of a farming item, idk.
the atmosphere. atmittedly it's very different from ds1, but it's still... something. there's something to it. i consider ds1's atmosphere and general vibe so well realized that i see it as sort of unsurpassable. this is probably the thing i'd criticize the most about ds3: in that game the atmosphere is really austere for some portions of the experience, though it obviously makes up for it in other ways.
the memories. idk they weren't great and a they're a bit obtuse as a progression gate but still a neat idea. the whole 'action set piece' vibe does clash tonally a bit with what i associate with souls titles but it would've been interesting to see that idea fleshed out in a sequel.
all in all, it wasn't all bad. it was just really frustrating trying to meet the game halfway sometimes when ds1 had already figured out ways to impart something onto you even through all of its friction. i know miyazaki wasn't the one directing this one etc etc but it really does feel like a completely different studio made it. like it was the first 'soulslike'.

Mmm i wanna ramble for a bit about soulsborne games. I have played through DS1, 2, 3, Bloodborne, & Elden Ring at this point. & all of them have their own unique strengths & weaknesses. I was introduced to the series through DS1 Remastered so I’ll start there!
Honestly? I love it with all my heart! I love the interconnectivity of the world! I love the NPCs! I love the story & atmosphere! How there are still echos of the age of ancients within the age of fire! I love the feeling of getting lost & ending up somewhere like Ash Lake or the back entrance of Darkroot Garden! & OMGS the obtuse mechanics! Like genuinely I love how obscure some of the stuff in this game is! From Vagrants to Grave Lording I feel like there is just a lot of neat things & always more to learn! I think the only things I don’t like are the limited casts on spells & pyromancies! & how you are fully stymied when using estus! I also appreciate how you can just level up at any bonfire, without having to see a specific NPC like you have to in 2, 3, & Bloodborne! It is still my favourite game in the entire series.
Dark Souls 2 is… interesting kdfksk you can tell Miyazaki wasn’t at the helm of this game. People shit on this game a lot, saying it is the worse of the series. I wouldn’t call it the worse, rather than it is just weaker than the others. It doesn’t have that same emotional oomph. What I do like about the game is the introduction of power stancing! Something which doesn’t return until Elden Ring! I do love the maze like map design within each map! I love the enemy designs! I love the bonfire ascetic system! Letting you advance individual areas to the next NG cycle! And cos this game locks certain things behind NG+ & beyond, that is both cool and useful! & I love the Covenant of Champions! &… that’s about all I liked dkckd the big flaws that has stood out to me was estus healing times, enemies stopping being respawned after the 12th kill (which is annoying if you are farming for souls or loot- Cov of Champs does allow them, but idk it is just annoying & it is telling that this covenant is only present in the Scholar of the First Sin edition), statues locked with Fragrant Branches of Yore, the health decreases when hollowed (which I know harkens back to Demon’s Souls, & DS2 is a lot more forgiving with this- but I think the health changes between hollow/human is done best in DS3, where rather than hollowing/unkindling decreases your max HP, & shows that on the health bar- it instead increases your max HP when human/kindled, & that changes the health bar- less emphasis on an item that comes in relatively low supply). Also the enemy AI’s feel weird, the number of areas that are intended for multiplayer is annoying on many levels (glares at the Black Gulch, & the path to the Blue Smelter Demon), & hhh yeah. I will say tho, I am pretty neutral on ADP! I like the concept that you can invest in your iFrames when rolling! & I appreciate how they reworked the level up costs with this stat in mind! & I then also appreciate how they balanced the game around being at higher soul levels cos of how cheap it is! & then implemented soul memory to de-emphasise soul level based match making! DS2 id the awkward teenager of the DS games- you can tell it isn’t made by Miyazaki. It had hella cool concepts! But it also was just annoying to play. It feels weak emotionally, but is still a decent time to play! It is kinda the Subnautica Below Zero of the Dark Souls games FDLSLDKC
Imma talk about Bloodborne next as it is the next to release in the series chronologically! Iirc this is the project Miyazaki was working on while DS2 was being developed! It is also the game that launched Soulsborne into major public consciousness. & it is easy to see why! The vibes & design are just on point! A beautiful hybrid of gothic & lovecraftian horror! The game has so many cool features! Iirc this is the first one in the series to have a stat explicitly influence your discovery stat! Good gods the fast healing with blood vials! THE TRICK WEAPONS! The music! The bosses! & man imo up until this point never has a DLC felt so seemlessly part of the base game! I love the concept of chalice dungeons! ESPECIALLY how there are community dungeons that aid with grinding up blood echos, insight, and blood stones! & Ofc the story & lore of this game is wonderful, & will just leave you asking & wanting more! Tbh I don’t have much to say about what I don’t like- other than needing to see a specific NPC to level up, early access to warp which de-emphasises exploring somewhat- & how this is the first game of the series to not let you upgrade your armours, a feature that has stuck with us up to Elden Ring (which sucks for Fashion Souls lovers who wanna wear gender armour but also have protection too <//3).
DS3 feels like a love letter to DS1. It has that same emotional oomph that DS1 had, & feels like it is part of the same universe. So there is a lot of insight that DS1 can gleem into DS3! I have already mentioned how much nicer DS3’s health management is with their hollowing/unkindling. You can see a lot of influence of Bloodborne in this game! Especially within Irythill, from its design to its enemies! This game iirc is the first to introduce FP! So no more hard limits on the number of times you can cast your pyromancies, spells, & miracles! The game feels a lot more polished! & idk what it is but I feel so much more inclined to explore this world! & this game rewards it so hard! I also love the insane number of mimics here too XD I think I have had more mimic chests than non-mimics! What I find annoying tho about this game is that again you can’t upgrade your armours- which sucks! Cos there are some hella cool armours I would love to wear more! But alas <//3 it is a reflection on the designers wanting to make combat in these games more proactive than defensive. I again am not a big fan of having levelling up tied to an NPC over just at the bonfire. & I am kinda sad too see power stancing (tho we do have paired weapons), ADP & bonfire ascetics leave us behind! Bonfire ascetics would have been a great addition to this game! Especially cos there are items locked behind the later NG cycles! & they absolutely could have used this as an opportunity to include the black phantoms of these later cycles too like DS2 did!
Lastly (cos I haven’t played Sekiro or Demon’s Souls yet) is Elden Ring. The Breath of the Wild of the Soulsborne games! I love this game! It is large! Immersive! Easy to get lost in! Fun! & just- it is an experience! I appreciate how this game lets you level up at the bonfires/graces again! It isn’t as immersion breaking this way & you can just keep on slogging through! The story is interesting! & the number of secrets you can find just by poking around is truely wonderful on so many levels! & I keep coming back to this game! The only other game other than DS1 that I play the higher cycles on! I think the only 2 things I don’t like about this game is again lack of armour levelling, & the lack of multiplayer that just happens to you. Player invasions are turned off unless you have summoned a player, which sorta sucks as someone who always enjoyed being invaded at random & having a goof ball fight (I know you can use the Dried Finger iirc to allow invasions without a summon but it just doesn’t feel the same, ya know?). There isn’t anything like the Grave Lord servants to randomly make your world harder & you gotta invade them to stop the black phantoms. There isn’t anything like the Blue Sentinels or grey spirits to be summoned without a summon sign to help other players. & all of this can make Elden Ring feel a bit lonely. Which is inevitable with open world games, & this sorta stuff would’ve helped a tonne with easing that.
DOFKSKF ANYWAY BIG RAMBLE ABOUT THESE GAMES. THEY ARE ALL PRETTY NEAR REGARDLESS. If I had to rank them it would DS1, 3, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, then DS2 dkdkdksjd all of them are good all things considered! Best lore games are DS1 & 3. Best exploration 3 & Elden Ring. Best combat Bloodborne, 3 & Elden Ring. Best sequence breaking DS1 & Elden Ring. Best NG+ experience DS2 & 3. Best obtuse mechanics DS1. &- yeah that’s it dkfksk

May’s private payrolls based on ADP estimates are the lowest since March 2023. Private payrolls rose only 37,000 last month, far beneath April’s addition of 60,000 and a far cry from the Dow Jones forecast of 110,000.
The financial sector rose by 20,000, leisure and hospitality saw an increase of 38,000, and construction added 6,000. Still, that was not enough to offset the losses on other sectors. Professional and business services shed 17,000 jobs, education and health services lost 13,000, goods-producing industries shed 2,000, natural resources and mining lost 5,000, and manufacturing was down by 3,000.
Mid-sized corporations gained 49,000 employees, while small businesses with fewer than 50 workers lost 13,000, and large firms with over 500 employees lost 3,000 positions. Raises grew by 4.5% while wages for job changers rose 7%.

It’s the same in reverse: high rates don’t stop inflation when the cause is geopolitical, not consumer-driven or based on demand.

Bacterial Toxins & Damage to Neurons Which bacterial toxins have negative impacts on the human body? This paper reviews those toxins and their effects on human functions. Clinical Diseases Professor F.H. Kayser explains that "Exotoxins" are pathogenic bacteria that are capable of producing a "variety of toxins that are either the only pathogenic factor" in the onset of diseases like diphtheria, tetanus and cholera, or if they aren't the only factor they are at lease a "major factor" in a person getting these three diseases (Kayser, 2011). Not all of these toxins attack the cells; cytotoxins, for example, can produce toxic effects in a number of different host cells, Kayser explains on page 15. But without fail, neurotoxins impact the neurons of the host, according to the author. Kayser explains that AB toxins bind to "specific surface receptors on target host cells," and he lists the various AB toxins that do attack cells and neurons in those cells. Diphtheria toxin is an AB toxin, and it can lead to "cell death" through protein synthesis (Kayser, 16). The clinical reality associated with the diphtheria toxin is that it kills mucosal cells, which causes severe damage to the muscles of the heart, to kidneys, to adrenal glands, the liver and to "motor nerves of the head" (Kayser, 16). The Cholera toxin is an AB toxin, and as it enters the body it attacks the ADP-ribosyl (that regulates protein G), and this results in the "permanent activation of this enzyme" which in turn results in an increase in the secretion of electrolytes (Keyser, 16). The ultimate result is a condition the author describes as "massive watery diarrhea" and a substantial loss of water and electrolytes (16). The tetanus toxin directly attacks the neurons (synapses), preventing them from producing the "synapses of the interior horn" which in normal situations transmits inhibiting impulses to the motor nerve terminal" (Kayser, 16). Meanwhile in the book Neurobiology of Brain Disorders: Biological Basis of Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders, the authors explain that the release of toxins can have a negative impact on the human nervous system. In particular the authors mention the "Clostridium botulinus and tetani toxins, which are metalloproteases that inhibit synaptic vesicle release" (Zigmond, et al., 2014). Those difficult words basically mean that the human body's neurons are disrupted by the tetanus toxin (as mentioned in the previous page) and by the botulinum (associated with the term botulism). Once the botulinum toxin enters the human body, it spreads quickly via the bloodstream to negatively impact the "open-ended axon terminals of motor neurons"; in effect, the botulinum toxin blocks the normal synaptic vesicle release -- which results, Zigmond explains, in "flaccid paralysis" (436). One main concern that is shared by medical professionals is that drug addicts are known to use dirty needles, and botulism can result from the injection of "bacterial spores" (Zigmond, 436). As for the tetanus toxin, it spreads from an open wound in a muscle and is transported "retrogradely within carrier vesicles to motoneuron cell bodies"; from there it somehow escapes being degraded and continues along a path that leads it to block the release of synaptic vesicles that are located in "inhibitory neurons" (Zigmond, 436). The result of the blockage of synaptic vesicles in the neurons can be seen in "tetanic spasms," the author explains. The authors go on to explain that bacteria -- and other microbes -- can affect a human's nervous system from a "distance by molecular mimicry" (through the introduction of a microbe and the host tissue by a process of "immune cross-reactivity" (Zigmond, 436). In defense of Dark Souls 2, but I'm not Hbomberguy (or: why Dark Souls 3 is a worse game than Dark Souls 2, suck my dick about it):
I love the Souls games, I started with Elden Ring but pretty immediately went back and started playing everything From made that I could get my hands on. For a long while, I avoided DS2 like the plague, because of the fanbase's overall perception. Complaints like bad enemy placement, and samey boss design, and the existence of ADP as a concept echoed through my head.
I eventually ran out of Souls games to play (except Demon's Souls and honestly? I'm good) so I went back and played 2.
I fucking love Dark Souls 2. It's the best of the Dark Souls series. The hub is beautiful, the NPCs memorable (even if I'm shit with names, shut up), and there's more here to enjoy than the other two Dark Soulses combined. So I'm gonna argue with a strawman who I'm definitely gonna call Pookie, because *I* haven't made these points before, and *obviously* my thoughts are the most important. /sarcastic
So first off: ADP. I do not like this choice. Adaptability, for those of you unaware, dictates how good your rolls are, in combination with your equip load, which is tied to the stat you upgrade for more stamina. More or less, it's a stat that is required to play the game, regardless of your build or preferences for armor (unless you're one of those madmen that enjoy the naked/Soul Level One/other challenge runs, and more power to you if that's you). But guess what other game does the exact same thing, Pookie? That's right! Dark Souls 3! Vitality isn't exactly the same as ADP, it pretty much exclusively dictates your carry weight, but for a Greatsword enjoyer who Will Not heavy roll, it's the same thing! A stat which does not provide me any fun(ctional) benefit to my build, just required if I want to be able to roll good. These choices are identical missteps. For the record, Elden Ring's stats are the right way to tackle this. Tie my rolls to equip load, and tie my equip load to a stat that provides me a tangible benefit other than I-frames.
For the next point, I'm gonna paint a picture:
I load into this Souls game, Knight class picked, Miku kitted out in gear that is clearly not his. I walk through the first area, find a couple dogs and some Hollows. One of the dogs gets behind me, and because of my dumbass choice in class, I fat roll away, get caught, and chewed to death. Fine, it's fine, whatever. I load back in, and a sizable chunk of my health is gone. The fuck?
Which game is that, Pookie? If you answered DS2, you'd be wrong! Because DS2 takes like 5%* of your health, and DS3 takes closer to 30%*! The Ember system being framed as "Bonus" health doesn't mean that your max health isn't higher before you die! You have to burn a consumable available in limited quantities to regain that health in both games! They're the same system! Arguably, the one in DS2 is better, because they take less health for each death, and because there are things you can do to mitigate it! I rocked the Ring of Binding for like 80% of that game! The only reason people don't feel the same way about 3 is you don't have to look your missing health in the eye the whole time it's missing.
Another thing I touched on in that word-picture I weaved for you is the dogs. DS2's dogs are regular From Soft dogs, as annoying as any other game in the series, EXCEPT for 3, where dogs can teleport! WHY CAN DOGS TELEPORT?
Another common complaint I've seen with DS2 is that all the bosses are dudes in armor. My guy, that's the franchise. It's ALL dudes in armor, dragons, or demons. There are THREE Stray Demons in DS1. In DS3, in order, you fight: Dude in Armor but Goop, Hamster Dude in Armor, Tree, Dude in Robes, Dudes in Armor, Catholic Dudes, Big Skeleton, Dude in Armor AND Robes, BIG Dude in Armor, circle back and hit Weird Lady in Armor, Armor with No Dude, Dude in Armor with Pet Twink, Dude in Armor that Symbolizes Previous Dudes in Armor. Aside from a couple more optional bosses, it's all dudes in armor!
As far as enemy placement, I never walked into a room in DS2 where I couldn't lure out less than 3 dudes at a time, which is pretty easy to handle with a Greatsword. Couple of blind corners and traps, but nothing too hard to manage. On the other hand, JUST in the High Wall of Lothric, i got jumped like 30 times between the start of the game and Vordt. This game is FULL of unfair ambushes, and there's FUCKALL you can do to mitigate some of them. You want through this room? Aggro ten dudes or shut the FUCK up. Hope you like not engaging with the game, because you're running away from all these dudes or finding a choke point and just poking one guy through the doorway. Conflict in DS2 is engaging, especially since you don't have I-frames on doors and fog walls, so you HAVE to engage (another decision I applaud, tbh. These aren't boss rushes, they're full games), conflict in DS3 is annoying and designed around speedrunners running through to the fog wall. Fuck that.
Folks also talk about Lifegems as some sort of gotcha, but I played through like 90% of DS2 without them? Skill issue I guess, once I got 3 Estus I basically never used another Lifegem unless conflict was over and I had time for the Lifegem to fill my health without concern.
Now, this last part's just personal preference, but I like the animation set for DS2 an awful lot more than the rest of the series. The way you hold a straight sword 2-handed is just cooler. Parry-ripostes are just cooler. DS2 has swag, man. The other Soulses don't.
Pookie, you like Dark Souls 3 because it's speedrun friendly and nostalgia bait for Dark Souls 1, and literally half THAT game is fucking unplayable, but that's a topic for another day.
