AI Pollen Project Update 1
Hi everyone! I have a bunch of ongoing projects in honey and other things so I figured I should start documenting them here to help myself and anyone who might be interested. Most of these aren’t for a grade, but just because I’m interested or want to improve something.
One of the projects I’m working on is a machine learning model to help with pollen identification under visual methods. There’s very few people who are specialized to identify the origins of pollens in honey, which is pretty important for research! And the people who do it are super busy because it’s very time consuming. This is meant to be a tool and an aid so they can devote more time to the more important parts of the research, such as hunting down geographical origins, rather than the mundane parts like counting individual pollen and trying to group all the species in a sample.
The model will have 3 goals to aid these researchers:
Count overall pollen and individual species of pollen in a sample of honey
Provide the species of each pollen in a sample
Group pollen species together with a confidence listed per sample
Super luckily there’s pretty large pollen databases out there with different types of imaging techniques being used (SEM, electron microscopy, 40X magnification, etc). I’m kind of stumped on which python AI library to use, right now I’ve settled on using OpenCV to make and train the model, but I don’t know if there’s a better option for what I’m trying to do. If anyone has suggestions please let me know
This project will be open source and completely free once I’m done, and I also intend on making it so more confirmed pollen species samples with confirmed geographical origins can be added by researchers easily. I am a firm believer that ML is a tool that’s supposed to make the mundane parts easier so we have time to do what brings us joy, which is why Im working on this project!
I’m pretty busy with school, so I’ll make the next update once I have more progress! :)
Also a little note: genetic tests are more often used for honey samples since it is more accessible despite being more expensive, but this is still an important part of the research. Genetic testing also leaves a lot to be desired, like not being able to tell the exact species of the pollen which can help pinpoint geographical location or adulteration.

My kiddo (11yo) is neurodivergent and gender-nonconforming, and in my state there are not enough protections for me to feel comfortable with them attending school.
Teachers are allowed to isolate kids in closets or physically restrain them if they have a meltdown. A friend of mine was called to the school because a teacher called the cops on her autistic daughter, put her in handcuffs and stuck her in a patrol car alone to "calm her down". At age 8. Hell no.
And LGBTQIA protections are being whittled down to nothing. I don't know yet how kiddo will ultimately identify but I can tell you it's not likely to be cis & straight. Kiddo's had a bit of bullying in public places and I have zero interest in putting them in a situation where that could be happening 8 hours a day with no escape.
Personally I allow my kiddo to follow their own interests and learn from the real world rather than sit in school and be taught to take tests. We do what would be considered unschooling or child-led education.
Kiddo goes to occupational therapy. Plays with other kids on our block. We go to the library and parks and take advantage of loads of free resources to learn all kinds of things.
We live in a walkable, diverse, low-income area that is very active and interesting. And we're just a metro ride away from the city center where there is a zoo, museums, theaters, science center, and lots of cultural events.
Kiddo knows how to do research on the internet and how to identify reliable information (and ignore the AI). We get a lot of books from the library and kiddo will be getting their own library card soon so they can check out ebooks and audiobooks on their own.
We also do a lot of practical learning through gardening, woodworking, helping family members with DIY projects and repairs. I work from home so kiddo gets to observe my work as well and has become very good at teaching things and walking people through things step by step (I do phone tech support for educational materials).
Kiddo's BFF is a kiddo who has to do distance learning because they live with a medically fragile family member and when their school dropped all COVID protections, they had to stop going in-person. They play a lot outside, and do Minecraft and boardgames together.
The requirement in my state is that I have to keep track of what categories of things kiddo is learning (math, science, social studies, language arts, etc) and attest that they have spent a certain number of hours learning those things throughout the year.
It is absolutely not hard at all to meet the requirements because kiddo is curious and interested in so many things (thanks ADHD and Autism!)
Kiddo is very into ecology and environmental science. Their favorite podcast is the one made by our local Department of Conservation. We planted a rain garden this year with native plants to filter runoff and support native species. Kiddo maintains the water pump that aerates the water and attracts birds and pollenators.
If kiddo wants to start taking college courses in a few years, we'll put together a portfolio and they'll take some placement tests and should be able to start as early as 16 if they want.
Is it common to be homeschooled in the US? (question for people who live somewhere where this is a thing)

some general hcs to think about 💭
There's a few random domestic things for bachelor Tony I like to think about sometimes (and would love to know if you have any of your own ❤️)
✏️ We all know he's a very talented individual in many ways, but he drew up that first blueprint of the suit (or at least some of it) and then went home and did it again (with better help from his AI pal, mind you). And considering all the other things he's built, he probably drew those up too, right? He had at least some part in designing his house, and he would've had to draw up designs for those college projects, too
✏️ Now he's not out here drawing headshots and detailed forest sceneries, but he can probably sketch up a decently cute corner café from the plaza, or the city's skyline towering around Central park where the trees might look a little awkward but that's okay! He might not necessarily be considered "good", but enough to where an onlooker or friend might be like, "hey, that's pretty good!" He might doodle when he spaces out. Don't give him a pen and notepad during a conference where all he's doing is listening because there will be silly looking cats or various new designs for things he's decided to start on now that he's trapped and bored somewhere. It's also a fun little pass time, or a fun challenge to get his mind off things when he's staring mindlessly through the window of that little corner café on the plaza.
🎹 We know he loves music, and we also know his mother played piano. And that he loved to listen to it growing up, even falling asleep on the sofa a few times! His mom probably tried to teach him growing up, but he was too restless to sit there long enough to learn much. Though, he can probably still recall a few little tunes he did learn, occasionally tapping them out every so often on a baby grand piano just to see if he remembers. He always gets it mixed up and goes too slow the first few times, but once he hears the right sounds he smiles a little and plays it another time or two at the right tempo.
🎹 Sometimes it strikes a nerve when he's at a party or fancy restaurant and hears a familiar tune that he never learned so he could go take apart an RC car in the backyard instead. He doesn't sit around listening to a playlist of classical music or anything like that, but he does enjoy hearing it from time to time. And music in general helps fill the silence in that empty house when the silence gets a little too loud.
🐈 Pets. Never grew up with them, never had them. He's probably a little afraid of animals and their spontaneity, anyway. Sure kittens and rabbits and what not are cute or whatever, but... they're also dirty, need more attention than he can give, and would scratch the shit out of his floor and furniture (and him! He already gets hurt enough!). Plus,, taking care of a living thing is scary, let's be honest, though he has probably considered it. Things can get lonely in such a big, isolated house, after all. He can never commit, though.
🥀 Perhaps plants could be a safer option? Unfortunately not. He hates being sick in any way, and swears that he's always allergic to the pollen in the spring. Half the time he forgets the last time he watered them, or forgets to water them altogether. He leaves them out on the balcony for too long, or forgets to bring them inside before the storm that he got a notification for hours ago. He probably feels an oddly heavy guilt when they die or get yellow spots, and decides he'd rather avoid that feeling altogether. Just like a pet, they are pretty and give his home some extra life! But he has a hard enough time taking care of himself
🥘 We know he's... well, an okay cook! It might take him a few hours longer than it should... but he has the money to by extra ingredients for redoing it when it doesn't work out the first time (or two)! Cooking for only one is hard, but relying on takeout and frozen foods gets boring and a little depressing. Plus, its another way to pass the time, at least, and it makes him feel a little proud of himself
✈️ He goes on vacations alone when he's bored and cramped, but it's not usually as much sex and fun as he makes it out to be. He's getting out of town for a reason, to escape his normal everyday life and have a different kind of peace and quiet; and perhaps somewhere the locals won't treat him so stiffly and regard him so highly (and only try to get him in bed like one time instead of all night, every night). Maybe he can have some normal fucking conversation for once, too, that's not about him or the company or business ventures
🥃 Unfortunately we know he drinks a lot. He knows he needs to watch it, but at least he can't get into anything when he's home alone! But maybe it does help to soothe that talkative brain and fill in the lonesome gaps here and there...
💠 Talks to JARVIS a lot. About normal ass things sometimes and not just work related projects. Who else is he going to talk to? Himself? At least JARVIS makes sense most of the time, and sometimes tells a joke or two! Oh, wait, those were meant to be serious, weren't they?
💠 It's a constant struggle between enjoying the solitude and actually wanting some sort of companionship, but that's probably too hard right now. Look what happened to those plants! He'll get around to it later... probably :(
💠 But... isn't this the dream that everyone wants? At least he can walk around, doing as he pleases without being yelled at, or argued with, or nagged… right?

A 10,000 year warning
It isn’t every project that requires people to make plans for thousands or millions of years in the future. But some kinds of nuclear waste remain deadly for over 250,000 years, probably outliving all existing civilizations, languages, and possibly even humanity itself. So when people design nuclear waste storage facilities, they also have to think about what kinds of warnings might still be understandable so far in the future. People have proposed many approaches, from pictograms to carvings of horrified faces to genetically engineered cats or cacti that glow in the presence of radiation.
One class of proposals from a 1993 report would change the landscape itself to appear shunned, forbidding, or useless:
The report authors recommended “Menacing Earthworks”, but to me this seems unsatisfactory - it seems like future beings might find it interesting enough to investigate, with an inviting pre-prepared construction site at the center. There are even viewing platforms! So I gave a summary of a few of the designs to GPT-3 to complete, to see if it could suggest some scarier alternatives.
Some of its suggestions would fit right in with the human designs, about as likely to warn away/confuse/intrigue future civilizations.
Sphere of Gravity A large sphere of rammed earth or metal, so smooth and featureless that it gives the illusion that it would attract any object that came into contact with it.
Randomization A large circular area with random dips and peaks of various sizes, with alternating coloured layers of sand.
The Giant Hand: a tall, narrow, rectangular slit in the earth, with a huge hand protruding from the bottom.
Mountain of Empty Barrels A large artificial dune consisting of empty oil drums.
Cratering Large craters on the site, which would be visible from the air, and give an impression of a site which has been blasted and destroyed.
Dangerous Stairs An enormous set of crisscrossing, stair-like structures made of concrete, covering the site from view.
Upside Down Landscape A series of artificial hills constructed upside down in each corner of the site, which would still appear strange even after years of use by wildlife.
Horizontal Plinth of Cloudy Quartz and Bismuth A thin stone strip placed flat along the landscape, from which a series of large cloudy quartz crystals and bismuth balls will protrude.
Other neural net suggestions seem a lot less effective, mostly because they wouldn’t be even slightly forbidding:
Warning Stones: Tiny stone monuments, placed in the soil in the shape of a natural formation, which could be used to generate a narrative about the site's dangers.
Fairy Ring A large circular ring of mushrooms around the site, which after some time would grow together and form a continuous ring.
Speak No Evil Landscape Loudspeakers broadcasting sometimes false and sometimes true warnings from the landscape.
Disrupted Pollen Lines Certain native plant species such as junipers and yew could be planted to indicate that there is no farming or building allowed.
Robot Sculptures A series of very-large-scale sculptures of robots, which would be visually striking and memorable from a distance.
Another class of neural net result would probably be pretty darn noticeable, and pretty darn scary, if anyone could figure out how to actually make them.
Infinite Mountain A large decorative mountain that would continue to grow indefinitely at the center of the site or in its vicinity.
Distortion of Time and Space A massive device that would alter the flow of time and gravity in the vicinity.
Hydrothermal Alteration Zone (HAZ) A large geothermal area full of exploding geysers, boiling mud pools and a foul odor, sometime described as smelling like rotten eggs, sulfur, and chlorine. Such a place has a history of being less wanted by the local peoples, and will not be easily reclaimed.
Cosmic Rift A large opening at the site through which a small pebble might fall endlessly.
In the examples above I prompted GPT-3 with the sentence “Proposals for warning our descendants away from a nuclear waste storage site:” followed by a few of the forbidding landscapes that humans had proposed.
But could the landscapes get spookier if I raised the stakes? I tried changing to the prompt “Proposals for warning our descendants away from a place of utter cosmic horror, the nature of which we dare not whisper, and which may totally destroy any mortal foolish enough to linger at the site:” and YES they got MUCH scarier. Here was one of its first suggestions:
Giant Tube Worms A large cluster of enormous worms growing from a rocky surface, extruding bubbling fluid, and emitting audible chittering noises.
Subscribers get bonus content: A bunch more, including “Dam of Innards” and “Tulips of Shrieking Madness”.
My book on AI, You Look Like a Thing and I Love You: How Artificial Intelligence Works and Why it’s Making the World a Weirder Place, is available wherever books are sold: Amazon - Barnes & Noble - Indiebound - Tattered Cover - Powell’s - Boulder Bookstore

SteveTony Weekly - May 23
Happy Sunday!! Here’s what I’ve been reading this week. As always, leave your fic authors some love if you read and enjoy their stories!
**Indicates my recent favs
~*~
**Are We Satellites? by starvels(dinosaur) (Marvel 616/29k)
In between sunrises on the road, Steve is speaking, eating, stepping into diners to save people like coming back to his childhood home.
And Tony, Tony is watching him. Tony is relearning being awake.
-
A cross country roadtrip where Steve and Tony find the typical American town, a fuckton of trees and finally, finally, find the right questions to ask each other.
All The Love You Hold and Hide by Mireille (Sex Pollen/17k)
On a mission, Steve triggers a booby trap that turns out to be a skeevy sex curse, of the "fuck or die" variety.
Tony volunteers as tribute.
No Time For Losers by gottalovev (Hockey AU/25K)
Tony Stark: Playboy. Millionaire. Philanthropist. Hockey superstar.
(featuring among other things an unexpected trade, learning to get along with new teammates, pining, the Olympics, and a happy ever after)
**King of Infinite Space by Elspethdixon, Seanchai (Avenger s 616/37k)
A villain from Tony's past comes back to cause trouble for the Avengers. Maybe it wouldn't have been so easy, if things weren't already so awkward over the events of Execute Program.
**A Real Boy by Sineala (AI Tony Stark/11K)
When Steve shows up for the Avengers' team meeting, he quickly discovers that the version of Tony in attendance this week is the artificial intelligence. But Tony is still Tony, the man Steve has loved for years, and him being a hologram doesn't stop the two of them from falling for each other. They just have a few kinks to work out.
If the Jacket Fits by betheflame (No Powers AU/3.3K)
Steve finds a stranger in a park having a panic attack and gives him his jacket to keep warm as he calms down.
Tony falls for the stranger who gave him his coat during a panic attack, but finding "Steve from Brooklyn" isn't exactly easy.
Good thing Tony is a stubborn weirdo.
Bold of Spirit by hollyandvice (hiasobi_writes) (Mediveal AU/7.7K)
"Are you listening? Or are you just an idiot?”
"Listen here. I have half a dozen blades to finish tempering and two more sets of plate armor to finish adjusting before the morning, and you think I have time to work on an unknown sword with an unknown alloy for someone that doesn't even know my prices? You may be a Titan, but you're still mortal just like the rest of us. You can wait your damn turn."
Blacksmith Tony Stark is the best in the business, and he doesn't take well to being talked down to. When what should have been a single job for a passing Titan becomes something more, his whole life gets turned upside down.
**even if the brain has forgotten, perhaps the teeth remember (or the fingers) by theappleppielifestyle (Amnesia/8.9k)
Tony gets temporary amnesia.
Some things are clearer without his preconceptions dragging him down.
To Here, in the New by salable_mystic, shipperslist (Amnesia Hurt Comfort/6.8k)
To Steve, getting seriously hurt on a mission is nothing new, neither is taking ages to heal. But having this nagging feeling of something being fundamentally missing?
That’s new.
A Cap/IronMan RBB fic.
There's A History Between Us (and people think it's mine) by IamShadow21 (Amnesia/4.5k)
A moment is all it takes to open up the box and confirm his suspicion.
“I think you're right, Cap,” Tony says. “This isn't my area.”
Appraise Valuable Assets -> Launch Opportune Navigation (AVALON) by gottalovev (AVALON Protocol/6k)
The plan was that no one but Tony would know about the AVALON protocol until it was needed. Steve finds out and he's pissed.
bears and mountains and lumberjack oh my! By justanotherrollingstony (Lumberjack AU/24K)
It was supposed to be easy--go meet the reclusive artist and buy some art. And then came the broken down car. And the snowstorm. And the lumberjack with a face like a greek god. So yea, Tony is stuck in a cabin in the woods with a hot lumberjack till the storm clears. Could be worse.
a day in principal stark's office by nannersmelo (Teacher AU/10K)
Tony Stark has his hands full with not only Stark Industries, but also his beloved mother's life project: The Maria Stark Academy, and as he enters his office in order to deal with a ferocious mother whose son was apparently assaulted by one of his brightest students, he was sure this day would culminate in nothing but a heinous headache.
Little did he know - he was in for one hell of a surprise.
a rat-ional conclusion by BladeoftheNebula (Vet AU/6K)
He had a strong flurry of patients throughout the morning and by the time it rolled around to noon, he was just about worn out.
He walked out into the reception, stretching until he felt a satisfying pop. “Are we done?”
Bucky checked the screen. “Just about. One more before lunch - a rat, singular.”
Steve breathed a sigh of relief. Hopefully straight forward then. “Great, let me know when they-”
He was interrupted by the bell over the door and looked up to see a little girl cradling a small animal carrier, being shepherded through the door by easily one of the hottest men he’d ever seen in real life.
Oh wow.
Come on Closer by Epiphanyx7 (PWP/4K)
[[... porn.]]
Or, the one where Steve wants to talk to Tony about something important.
Modern Art by FestiveFerret (MCU/ 1K)
Steve finally worked up the courage to ask Tony out, only to find out that Tony has a crush on someone else.
**I’ll Take Care of You by iam93percentstardust (Established Relationship/1.2k)
Steve finally lets Tony do a skincare routine on him.
