I had to this term and it makes me furious

At least the end goal was to either defend or oppose its use in teaching in schools but still. The fact that I couldn’t just show my peers statistics on how it’s killing the planet and call it a day but nooooo. I also had to test a bunch of stuff out to conclude. Yes, it still does give you wrong answers when you use it.

I understand we need to learn about teaching platforms but the case of genAI for education makes me so upset because it’s just the endless loop of “ teachers are burnt out and have no supports and this is the magic way to fix that!” And it the long term it’s just making that problem worse because more and more jobs and creators are being gutted in favour of the algorithms which means less supports and the cycle continues. You can’t lecture me about copyright infringement in education and then use the fucking theft blender to give you a simplified version of that short story. It makes me so angry

Additionally, it kills me that we are called to teach kids about the world: the environment, history and social justice goes right in the curriculum (Alberta anyways) and there are still teachers who have no idea of the impact of AI. I showed my classmates the imagery generation bias thing (along the lines of what kind of person does the shitty program give you when you ask it to generate a picture of a doctor) and their jaws hit the floor. I don’t think a single one knew. This was in a teaching language arts class where we are also charged with showing kids how to do proper research. Right there, in the curriculum we are called to teach them how to evaluate sources. And I have peers my age who don’t even understand how the platforms they are using get the information they are getting.

I feel bad in some ways because it’s hard to keep up but also. Right there in the pillars of education in my province it tells us to “Learn throughout our career”: “follow developing technology”. And yet I rarely see the ethical side discussed in education. And while yes, I get why they talk about how you can use it to make a quiz, you can’t not consider the former when you are preparing kids for the future. Kids whose families will be IMPACTED FIRST by the AI hellscape because they aren’t as well off as you are. And you are called to help these kids, every single one. And regarding my peers, they are online all the time and see things, so the information is easy to find.

I spent so many hours in that class viscerally angry. This isn’t the same as the panic around the calculator being introduced despite what some people think.

thats it. i want to have a thought for myself. I want to read and summarize information for myself. I want to look up information without having it reduced to a bite sized paragraph. I want to write a 200 word response or a 20000 word essay by myself. i want to do things by myself, because i am capable of doing it by myself.

if someone else has difficulty writing or drawing or coming up with an idea or what the fuck ever else, this should not mean an entire curriculum is shifted to the point that i cannot be taught to do something without ai being involved, when they were perfectly capable of giving effective feedback not three years prior before this whole thing reached the public. i do not want ai assisted browers, or ai powered this, or ai supported that, for the simple fact that i didnt ask. and now they will not let me turn it off. THAT is my big issue

yes, the consequences of ai in academia can be devastating and we should be concerned about it. but you know what else we should be concerned about? the impact of the overt suspicion and paranoia against students just trying to get through their degrees to survive in this world

you think scrutinising students and trying to decipher who has and hasn’t used ai will be done without bias or prejudice? you think international students won’t be flagged for using “too formal/static” language because that’s how they learned english? you think poc, disabled or other minorities that are often belittled won’t be unjustly flagged for sounding “smarter than they are”? you think lower-class students will be unaffected by having to spend extra time and resources to show up at meetings to prove they haven’t used ai?

it’s never going to be a fair and proportionate impact when we focus all our energy on “catching” the bad ones

conversations around ai should always acknowledge and emphasise the safety of students and people, we cannot become hyper vigilant unpaid police who try to point out who’s “fake” with no regard to how subconscious biases affect the direction of your finger
