How AI & Automation Are Changing the Future of Lead Generation
âThe future is already here â itâs just not evenly distributed.â â William Gibson
In the high-stakes world of sales, timing, personalization, and speed are everything. Traditional outbound lead generation methodsâcold calls, batch-and-blast emails, static prospect listsâare rapidly becoming relics. Today, AI and automation are not just buzzwords; theyâre redefining the future of lead generation services. The companies that understand and leverage these technologies will own the pipeline, dominate the market, and outpace competitors still stuck in the past.

This blog explores how AI and automation are transforming outbound lead generation, and how businesses and agencies can harness these innovations to generate better leads, fasterâand at scale.
Why Traditional Lead Generation Models Are Breaking Down
Outbound lead generation has always been about finding the right prospects, reaching out with the right message, and doing it at the right time. But doing this manually is:
Time-consuming: Reps waste hours researching prospects and writing emails.
Inconsistent: Results vary wildly from one salesperson to another.
Scalable only with cost: Growth often means hiring more SDRsânot increasing efficiency.
Meanwhile, buyer behavior has changed. According to Gartner, 77% of B2B buyers say their latest purchase was very complex or difficult, and most of their journey is digital and self-directed. This means lead generation must be smarter, more targeted, and more automated.
How AI Is Powering a New Era of Lead Generation Services
1. Smarter Prospecting with Predictive Analytics
AI tools can now analyze your existing customer data to predict who is most likely to convert next. Platforms like Apollo, ZoomInfo, and 6sense use behavioral signals, firmographics, and intent data to:
Build dynamic ideal customer profiles (ICPs)
Identify high-fit, high-intent prospects
Prioritize leads based on conversion likelihood
Instead of sifting through thousands of contacts, sales teams now focus only on those most likely to buy.
2. Hyper-Personalized Outreach at Scale
Personalization is no longer a luxuryâitâs an expectation. AI copywriting assistants like Lavender, SmartWriter, or ChatGPT can:
Craft custom email intros based on LinkedIn bios, job roles, and industry news
A/B test subject lines and CTAs automatically
Suggest optimal sending times and sequences
The result? Higher open, reply, and conversion ratesâwithout adding extra hours to your SDRsâ workload.
3. AI Chatbots & Virtual Assistants for 24/7 Engagement
AI-powered chatbots like Drift and Intercom can handle initial prospect interactions around the clock. They:
Qualify leads in real-time based on preset logic
Route hot leads to the right sales reps
Book meetings directly into calendars
This means your lead generation services donât stop when the workday endsâand your funnel keeps filling even while you sleep.
4. Intent-Based Advertising and Retargeting
AI is revolutionizing outbound lead generation by aligning outreach with buyer intent signals.
Platforms like Bombora and LeadSift monitor what your target audience is researching online
This data triggers automated ads, emails, or outreach sequences
You engage leads the moment theyâre actively researching a solution like yours
Itâs no longer about being firstâitâs about being right on time.
5. Automated Lead Scoring and CRM Integration
AI takes the guesswork out of lead qualification. Modern CRMs (HubSpot, Salesforce Einstein, Zoho) now include:
Predictive lead scoring models
Auto-tagging based on engagement and demographics
Workflow automation to assign leads to reps instantly
Sales reps no longer waste time chasing dead-end leadsâtheyâre focused on the ones that actually close.
The Real Impact: Data-Driven Results from AI-Powered Campaigns
Companies that have embraced AI-led lead generation are seeing measurable gains:
60% increase in qualified leads (Harvard Business Review)
40% reduction in customer acquisition cost (Salesforce Research)
35% increase in appointment booking rates via AI-enhanced cadences (Outreach.io)
Whether you're running in-house campaigns or outsourcing to a lead generation service, automation adds speed, accuracy, and consistency that human-only teams canât match.
Challenges to Watch (and How to Overcome Them)
While AI and automation offer clear benefits, they also come with challenges:
Over-automation can lead to robotic messaging â Solution: Use human oversight to review and refine
Bad data in = bad results â Solution: Regularly clean and enrich your data sources
Compliance and privacy risks â Solution: Ensure your tools are GDPR and Spam Act compliant, and be transparent with outreach
The key is to balance human creativity with machine efficiency.
The Future Is Hybrid: AI + Human Expertise
The best lead generation results donât come from choosing between humans and machinesâthey come from combining the strengths of both. AI handles the research, writing, timing, and scoring. Humans bring nuance, relationship-building, and judgment.
Outbound lead generation is no longer about just working harder. Itâs about working smarterâwith AI and automation as your co-pilot.

How Are Sales Teams Using Generative AI to Boost Conversion Rates?

In todayâs highly competitive digital landscape, sales teams are constantly searching for innovative strategies to enhance conversion rates and streamline the sales process. Generative AI, a transformative technology that leverages AI models to produce human-like text, images, and even product suggestions, has emerged as a game-changer for sales. By helping teams automate repetitive tasks, personalize customer interactions, generate compelling content, and refine targeting efforts, generative AI is fundamentally reshaping how sales teams operate. This blog explores the multifaceted ways in which sales teams leverage generative AI to boost conversion rates, delving into the technologyâs applications, benefits, and practical examples.
The Core Advantages of Generative AI for Sales
Generative AI enhances sales by introducing efficiencies and insights that traditional methods simply cannot match. Here are some of the core advantages it brings to sales teams:
Hyper-Personalization at Scale Personalization has always been crucial in sales, yet tailoring approaches for each potential customer can be resource-intensive. Generative AI enables hyper-personalized customer journeys by analyzing vast customer data and generating unique messages, product recommendations, and email content suited to individual preferences. This level of personalized engagement leads to a higher likelihood of conversion.
Efficiency Through Automation By automating repetitive tasks, generative AI frees up time for sales representatives to focus on more strategic activities, such as relationship building. For instance, AI-driven tools can draft emails, suggest responses, and even assist in qualifying leads, significantly accelerating the sales cycle.
Enhanced Decision-Making with Predictive Insights Generative AI models, like those trained on customer and sales data, provide predictive insights that help sales teams prioritize leads with a higher likelihood of conversion. This data-driven approach boosts productivity by focusing efforts on high-probability opportunities.
Content Generation for Various Touchpoints Sales teams rely heavily on content across the buyerâs journeyâfrom email newsletters to product descriptions. Generative AI can produce high-quality, persuasive content tailored to different audience segments, thereby engaging potential customers at each stage and increasing conversion rates.
Key Applications of Generative AI in Sales
Generative AI is being applied across the sales funnel, enhancing outreach efforts, qualification processes, and post-sales engagement. Hereâs how:
1. Automated Lead Nurturing
One of the significant challenges sales teams face is nurturing leads consistently without overloading their schedule. Generative AI models can create automated, personalized content that aligns with each leadâs stage in the buyer journey. By sending highly relevant messages, sales teams can keep prospects engaged and build a foundation for future conversions.
Example: AI-driven tools like HubSpotâs AI capabilities allow teams to segment leads based on behavior and automatically send tailored messages. This approach keeps potential clients warm and nurtures them with valuable information until theyâre ready to convert.
2. Smart Lead Qualification and Scoring
AI models can sift through lead data and score them based on historical success indicators, saving teams time and helping them prioritize high-value prospects. This level of precision not only improves efficiency but also directly impacts conversion rates.
Example: Platforms like Salesforce Einstein employ predictive lead scoring, enabling sales reps to allocate resources more strategically and pursue leads with the highest likelihood of conversion.
3. Content Personalization and Dynamic Sales Copywriting
Generative AI can produce personalized messages, ad copy, and dynamic landing pages that adapt based on the userâs behavior and preferences. By appealing to specific customer needs, AI-generated content helps sales teams connect with prospects on a deeper level, which can make a substantial difference in conversion rates.
Example: Jasper, an AI writing tool, generates personalized copy for different audiences, helping sales teams reach out with messages that resonate on an individual level. This personalized touch can lead to higher open rates and click-through rates, ultimately driving conversions.
4. Automating Follow-Up Emails and Response Suggestions
Sales reps spend a substantial amount of time drafting and sending follow-up emails. Generative AI automates this task, drafting customized follow-ups based on recent interactions, customer profile data, and previous buying signals. This ensures timely communication without overwhelming the team.
Example: ChatGPT and similar AI-powered tools can generate conversational follow-ups, answering inquiries, and providing product suggestions. This timely follow-up not only maintains interest but also helps move leads closer to conversion.
5. Sales Pitch Optimization and Real-Time Assistance
Generative AI can analyze past sales pitches to determine the elements that lead to success, helping sales teams refine their messaging. Some AI tools also provide real-time assistance during sales calls or meetings, suggesting relevant information, product details, and answers to customer questions.
Example: Gong.ioâs AI platform provides real-time feedback and pitch analysis, helping sales teams align their messaging with customer needs and increase their chances of conversion.
Enhancing Customer Engagement and Retention Through AI
In addition to boosting initial conversions, generative AI plays a significant role in customer engagement and retention:
1. Proactive Customer Support
Generative AI can drive chatbot interactions, providing personalized responses to customer queries, which enhances customer satisfaction and builds loyalty. When customers feel their needs are understood and addressed, they are more likely to engage with a brand.
Example: AI-driven platforms like Drift use chatbots that analyze customer intent, delivering real-time responses and proactively addressing potential pain points before they arise.
2. Up-Selling and Cross-Selling Recommendations
Generative AI can provide personalized product or service recommendations based on customers' previous purchases and browsing history. This proactive approach enhances the chances of customers purchasing additional products or services.
Example: Amazonâs recommendation engine is a prime example of AI in action. Sales teams can utilize similar technology to suggest complementary products, driving incremental sales and increasing average order values.
3. Creating Compelling Visuals and Content for Social Media Campaigns
Generative AI also enables sales teams to create engaging visuals and posts tailored for social media, keeping followers engaged and helping convert them into paying customers. Visual content can attract attention, foster brand awareness, and lead to direct conversions through social platforms.
Example: AI-driven tools like Canvaâs text-to-image capabilities can generate visually appealing social posts that attract clicks and increase engagement rates.
Measuring the Impact of Generative AI on Sales
The success of generative AI in sales is often measured by tracking the following KPIs:
Conversion Rate: The percentage increase in conversions directly attributable to AI-driven content or processes.
Customer Engagement Rate: Improved engagement metrics, such as email open and click-through rates, highlight AIâs role in driving interest.
Sales Cycle Duration: With automated lead nurturing and follow-ups, AI can reduce the time needed to move leads through the funnel.
Revenue Growth: Ultimately, AI-driven efficiencies translate into increased revenue for sales teams as they convert more leads into customers.
Tracking these KPIs provides valuable feedback, allowing sales teams to adjust and optimize their AI strategies continuously.
Challenges in Implementing Generative AI for Sales
While generative AI offers remarkable benefits, implementing it in a sales context isnât without challenges:
Data Privacy and Compliance Customer data privacy remains a top concern. Sales teams must ensure that AI-driven personalization adheres to regulations like GDPR to maintain customer trust.
Integration with Existing Systems Integrating generative AI tools into legacy sales systems can be complex and costly. Ensuring that AI applications are compatible with existing software is essential for seamless functionality.
Training and Adaptation Sales teams must adapt to working with AI tools, which may require training and change management to maximize effectiveness.
Future of Generative AI in Sales
Looking ahead, the role of generative AI in sales will likely grow, with AI becoming more autonomous in decision-making, offering deeper insights into customer behavior, and creating more immersive personalized experiences. Voice-activated AI assistants, real-time sentiment analysis, and AI-driven storytelling are just a few of the innovations that will further transform the sales landscape. As AI models become more sophisticated, their ability to understand nuanced customer needs and provide relevant, timely support will open new avenues for conversion rate optimization.
Conclusion
Generative AI is not only transforming the way sales teams engage with customers but is also proving to be a powerful tool for improving conversion rates. By automating processes, personalizing interactions, and enhancing decision-making, generative AI helps sales teams reach new levels of efficiency and effectiveness. However, the adoption of generative AI in sales requires thoughtful implementation and ongoing optimization to ensure it meets both business and customer expectations. As AI continues to evolve, its applications in sales will only expand, providing teams with more sophisticated tools to win over customers in an increasingly complex market.

How to set your first AI project up for success
30-second summary:
Choosing your first AI project is essential as digital organizations evolve.
The correct use of AI is helping brands with insights with precision, accuracy and scale.
The benefits are measurable and real if you know what you want to achieve.
AI is here to help and complement marketersâ skills, help them with laborious tasks and unleash more creativity and elevate personal and professional performance.
A look at five simple steps organizations can take to start their AI journey.
Today, organizations of all types and sizes are implementing AI; according to Gartner, 70% of organizations will integrate AI in the workplace to assist and increase the productivity of their employees by 2021.
Artificial intelligence offers far more utility than simply automating processes, though. In digital marketing, AI is helping brands achieve the personalization and engagement it takes to drive revenue and loyalty in the current consumer environment.
From personalized content and product recommendations to dynamic pricing, intelligent chatbots, intent-driven search optimization and even data-informed content creation, AI is changing the game for marketers.
The benefits are measurable and real, with recent research showing that AI enables marketers to:
increase sales (52%)
increase in customer retention (51%)
and succeed at new product launches (49%)
In another study by McKinsey, 44% of companies reduced operational costs and increased business revenue by using AI in marketing.
How can you put AI to work within your own marketing organization? There is no singular path to AI success. Work through these questions to determine your level of AI-readiness, then check out five steps below to help you get started on your first AI project.
What is the current state of our data assets?
Algorithms are hungry for data, but like the food we feed our bodies the data you feed your AI tools is key. The problem is, most organizations are falling down on data governance.
A recent study showed that just 3% of organizations analyzed had Data Quality Scores considered acceptable by researchers.
What is our organizationâs comfort level with the concept of AI?
If your marketing team and C-suite arenât even talking about it yet, you may have some serious work to do in laying the groundwork for budget allocation and adoption. Your first step is advocating that decision-makers gain a basic understanding of AI and machine learning.
They donât need an academic understanding of the internal workings of artificial intelligence, but should have a grasp of different AI techniques, models, approaches to data collections, and applications.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning: What are the opportunities for search marketers? offers a good primer on the opportunities and from there, there are plenty of free courses to work into your organizationâs ongoing training.
How all-in do we want to go?
Maybe you want to streamline entire business or marketing processes. Or maybe you just want to dip your toe in the water.
Getting started in AI a lot easier than it was even a few years ago. The tools you already use may even be incorporating AI capabilities alreadyâweâll talk about that shortly.
What do we want our AI solutions to achieve?
Be specific. AI might be used to personalize content to customersâ needs and expectation, or to optimize aspects of the customer journey. You might use it in ad targeting or content promotion to get in front of more motivated audiences, or to create hyper-targeted campaigns that span networks and publishing platforms.
LâOrĂŠal for example used BrightEdge (my company) AI based insights to drive 30% growth for Kiehlâs with quick answers. eBay uses AI to generate thousands of personalized email newsletter subject lines in minutes, for example.
Itâs a very specific task with a clear benefit and measurable outcome that enables the marketing team to connect at a scale it would take an exceptional (and ultimately too costly) amount of human copywriting talent to achieve.
Donât choose your AI solution first and then try to make it do what you need. Determine your desired outcomes so you can approach different tool providers with a solid idea of what you need your solution to do.
Do we have the skills and resources in-house to implement?
If you are looking for a solution to digitally transform the business, start by making sure you have the right talent in-house to help guide the solution to successful implementation.
You might need programmers with specific language skills to make it happenâPython, R, Proof, Lisp or Java are commonly used in AI applications. Youâll need managers with equal parts creative and analytical skills to encourage adoption, troubleshoot, and analyze performance, as well.
Are we adding to or replacing elements of our stack?
Will your AI solution integrate with all other elements of your stack, or might you inadvertently be creating new (time consuming) workarounds?
CMOs need to manage the performance of the stack as a whole and ensure that any new introduction to it serves a necessary purpose without taking away from any other function. If there are challenges in integration, can your choice of vendor help you find a solution?
In some cases, integration is less a concern, particularly when the output is immediately actionable and augments the human teamâs performance.
In my role I have seen customers with massive gains from the use of real-time research and automation such as 2X increase in conversions and 28% improvement in ad quality score.
AI led research can help enable brandâs content teams to quickly identify the most lucrative content gaps and create content optimized to meet those exact needs.
Getting started with AI: Five tips for selecting your first project
In a recent HBR column, Coursera founder Andrew Ng recommends that brands start small and use your first AI projects to build organizational confidence in the technology. âThe purpose of your one or two pilot projects is only partly to create value,â he said. âMore importantly, the success of these first projects will help convince stakeholders to invest in building up your companyâs AI capabilities.â
Keep that in mind as you establish your success metrics, and use these 5 tips to get you started:
See if your current vendors have AI. Maybe they donât today, but is it on the roadmap? You may have AI features and functionalities coming to your stack via the solutions your teams are already using.
Pick a project based on low-hanging fruit. Personalization is perhaps one of the most pressing needs in marketing. How can you better connect with consumers and meet their needs for tailored content? The American Marketing Association used AI with NLP (Natural Language Processing) to personalize its email newsletter content and boosted engagement by 42% in the process.
Document use case. What steps or actions are needed to ensure your AI solution is able to achieve the goals youâve set out for it? Make sure each member of the team understands their role and any ways they are expected to support the project.
Empower staff to work alongside and maximize the value of your AI. Ideally, your team and technology complement and augment one anotherâs performance; your employees should never be made to feel as though theyâre being replaced or competing against tools for budget. Support your team with a robust AI training program and nurture a culture of failing fast and moving on.
Measure performance and analyze outcomes. Again, for your first project you arenât necessarily looking for outcomes as massive as gains in continental market share, as Coca-Cola was with its Trax Retail Execution AI. Your KPIs for your first project will depend on your solution but should include multiple metrics that give you a clear view of actual performance. This might include email opens, content engagement, time saved, sales driven, etc.

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence Over The Next Five Years
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a huge growth enabler for many industries, due to its ability to streamline business processes, reduce operation costs and automate tedious tasks. The evolution of technologies such as cloud computing, big data, and internet of things (IoT) could enable further market growth in the AI sector, which my company predicts will be worth $190.61 billion by 2025. In its latest update, Tractica forecasted (paywall) that annual worldwide AI software revenue alone could reach $105.8 billion by 2025.
As AI continues to grow and expand its reach -- something I've written aboutpreviously -- I believe that the marketing, security, health care, and automotive industries are poised to be the top four end-user industries to experience the most significant impact during the next five years.
AI In Marketing
Today, companies are leveraging AI to enhance major marketing applications â such as copywriting, dynamic pricing, virtual assistants, consumer behavior prediction and others. Itâs enabling marketers to spot programmatic trends and opportunities as they occur and focus on building more profound client relationships through personalized online content and product recommendations (like Amazon's recommendation system), as well as other targeted advertising strategies.
To remain competitive, I predict that marketers will continue to adopt AI technologies to execute more effective campaigns over the next five years. In doing so, marketers will be able to create even more personalized and compelling content that meets rising consumer demand.
Additionally, marketers will likely focus on unlocking the potential of data, which would help them with real-time decision making, understanding target customers and developing advertising campaigns. Statista projects(paywall) that eCommerce sales will continue to grow, and I predict that the eCommerce sector will continue to attract customers in the coming years, which would create demand to deliver an enhanced experience using AI.
AI In Security
The world is increasingly becoming an insecure and vulnerable place. As the average total cost of a data breach continues to climb -- IBM found that, in the United States, it reached $7.91 million in 2018 -- organizations are leveraging AI to protect their most sensitive information.
Today, AI is playing a key role in helping organizations power various applications. One Security Week writer suggested that it could be applied to identity and access management (IAM). Companies like HSBC are also using it to improve risk and compliance management for processes like anti-money-laundering investigations. Cisco announced it would use analytics to detect malware in encrypted traffic, and companies are setting their sights on AI-driven threat investigation, antivirus/antimalware applications (paywall), intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS) to stop hackers, and others. The increasing number of mobile users (paywall), as well as the continued adoption of cloud-based services, will contribute to the growth of the AI market for security due to the increased ease of attack.
To safeguard data and strengthen their network security, I expect organizations to adopt security solutions integrated with AI technology to spot network attacks. By deploying the same, security analysts can constantly monitor, analyze and fetch critical security insights from the data and thus concentrate on reducing cyber threats and attacks in their organizations. Hence, AI also offers an attractive opportunity to leaders at security solution providers wherein they can offer next-generation AI-powered solutions to help organizations protect public as well as private infrastructure and save themselves from continuously increasing cyberattacks. For instance, various solution providers in the market are actively working toward strengthening their product portfolio by integrating AI technology into their product offerings, and I expect this trend to continue.
AI In Health Care
AI has enhanced a number of applications in health care. Take, for example, the AI system that conducts patient data and risk analysis and a system that can help detect cancers from imaging. Companies like Intel are also exploring AI applications for remote patient monitoring in clinical trials through wearable devices. A few newer applications of AI in health care can be seen in mental health treatments: One study published in Nature explored new AI capabilities that could accurately predict schizophrenia, and in 2015, Google and Johnson & Johnson reportedly teamed up to create surgical robots that use artificial intelligence. The growing demand to reduce rising costs coupled with the growing number of cross-industry partnerships I've noticed are likely driving this trend toward improvised health care services. Over the next five years, health care organizations could continue to adopt AI to improve patient outcomes.
AI-powered solutions are capable of analyzing real-time data and thereby helping support accurate decision making for doctors. Hence, to achieve the benefits offered by AI technology and deliver enhanced experiences to patients, hospitals should start using AI technology in their daily processes. Also, to tap into this opportunity, tech giants should form partnerships with hospitals to help them unlock the potential of data and effectively use electronic health care records.
AI In Automotive
AI in the automotive industry has become more prevalent over the past few years. We've seen the industry implement disruptive technologies in various products, such as voice recognition systems, as well as recently announced plans for gesture recognition systems, Volkswagen's intelligent copilot system and in-car assistants. This is a growing market where innovative companies could use AI technology in many upcoming models in premium segments. I believe AI is set to become an essential element in self-driving cars of the future. Vehicles could soon use technologies like deep learning to process a huge quantity of the data, which I believe will help to determine different types of situations on the road and react accordingly.
The growing demand for enhanced user experience, convenience and safety features across industries presents an opportunity for OEMs to develop new and innovative artificial intelligence systems, which could help attract customers. I predict that AI-based systems in the automotive sector will grow to become an essential component in vehicles in the next five years.
AI offers lucrative opportunities in the automotive sector. Solution providers in the market can work with various automotive designers and suppliers to build intelligent solutions and focus primarily on enhancing road safety and vehicle security.

AI applications for digital out of home advertising
30-second summary:
The use of data to contextualize campaigns to the âhere and nowâ means messages can be aligned with consumer mindset in the moment and become useful and relevant.
Dynamic Creative joins the dots between data-driven media planning and the mindset of a consumer at a given time, in a given place, making the medium truly reactive, and much more intelligent, as well as driving efficiencies.
Advances in technology will allow us to hold a true interaction with the consumer, using deep fake technology in real time. Currently itâs a resource intensive task that requires content to be rendered ahead of time but with faster machines this can happen in real time.
AI can be used with facial recognition technology to detect how much a person likes an advert by their facial expression and creative can be tweaked and updated depending on gender and age demographics in real time.
The added benefits of 5G connectivity will only help to accelerate our ability to utilize AI across the OOH technical landscape. However, it could be a case of âall the gear, no ideaâ, so we really need the creative community to come along on this journey, with ideas, concepts and âmoonshotâ thinking.
The growing sophistication of digital out of home (DOOH) infrastructure, the explosion of data, and the continued expansion of 5G networks means the industry is in an excellent position to continue to innovate and evolve with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).
Whilst I truly believe that itâs the creative idea behind an execution that brings its success, advancements in AI applications for DOOH will enable more intelligent, targeted, data-led campaigns with a multitude of possibilities for intuitive and seamless interaction.
The major applications and benefits of AI for DOOH are outlined below, with some cutting-edge examples to demonstrate their impact and memorability. Â
Dynamic, data-driven, automated creative
Agile, data-driven campaigns can be triggered across the year promoting different brands or products when the conditions suit.
The use of data to contextualize campaigns to the âhere and nowâ means messages can be aligned with consumer mindset in the moment and become useful and relevant.
McDonaldâs used weather data and time of day data to run tactical messages reminding consumers âhow long until breakfast finishesâ in the mornings, or to promote ice-cream sundaes when the sun was shining.
Coca-cola, on the other hand, pushed Smart Water on hot days when temperatures exceeded 21 degrees on the London Underground. Virgin Trains used real-time traffic data to let motorists know how much quicker their journey would have been by train.
By maximizing contextual relevance, such as time of day, weather, or traffic, the brand owner can manage the brand architecture to maximize media value. This means that AI and Automation can optimize adverts during campaigns, referring to data and updating creative accordingly.
The process referred to as Dynamic Creative Optimization, joins the dots between data driven media planning and the mindset of a consumer at a given time, in a given place.
 Predictive analytics & audience targeting
One of the primary benefits of AI in DOOH is the unlocking of predictive analytics to allow us to make better decisions on-the-fly.
Advancements in real-time audience targeting allow huge amounts of data to be crunched and processed to inform the creative process and help optimize both the media and the message whilst the campaign is running.
Displays can be informed by and interact with other mobile devices, applications, cameras, and wearables to gather and process data and deliver more useful and targeted experiences.
Dynamic Creative joins the dots between data-driven media planning and the mindset of a consumer at a given time, in a given place, making the medium truly reactive, and much more intelligent, as well as driving efficiencies.
With a high proportion of McDonaldâs sales driven by spontaneous visits and a short path to purchase, maintaining top of mind awareness and nudging people into purchase is key.
By using Ada, Talonâs data management platform, McDonaldâs were able to identify audience segments based on peopleâs real and recent behaviors, predicting buying patterns and in turn optimize the OOH plan.
Instead of broad demographic buying McDonaldâs used data intelligence to target those people who werenât considering McDonaldâs for a specific occasion, for example a morning coffee, to push a more contextual creative message to demonstrate how McDonaldâs could satisfy that particular need-state.
Real-time interactive & AR experiences
Interactive experiences will be much more unique and tailored to each user by sparking conversations. Imagine an augmented reality campaign that could reflect the current weather conditions.
Or perhaps a virtual brand ambassador, such as Gary Linekar for Walkers, powered by AI to engage and answer questions about their products.
Advances in technology will allow us to hold a true interaction with the consumer, using deep fake technology in real time. Currently itâs a resource intensive task that requires content to be rendered ahead of time but with faster machines this can happen in real time.
High impact, standalone executions that create a real buzz amongst users are a great way to create longer lasting memories and drive brand affinity.
No wonder then, that the genuinely immersive experiences offered by AR technologies are gaining momentum across the DOOH landscape.
AR is at the heart of some of our best interactive campaigns. Whether itâs a dance-off with Mickey Mouse in Times Square, or a live portal between London and LA, we canât wait to see these interactions continue and evolve.
Facial recognition
AI has been assisting dynamic digital OOH campaigns in a variety of ways for a few years now.
It can be used with facial recognition technology to detect how much a person likes an advert by their facial expression and creative can be tweaked and updated depending on gender and age demographics in real time.
There are many examples where this has been employed with various levels of success and acceptance.
There have been some stellar examples of this technology in action including a vending machine for Coca-Cola that dispensed drinks when the consumer smiled or a Sony Pictures AR promotion for The Emoji Movie which tracked the faces of passers-by and superimposed different emoji characters onto their heads, according to the participantâs gender and mood.
ďťż
Vehicle recognition
Other applications include the use of AI in roadside DOOH campaigns to facilitate vehicle recognition.
Since the DVLA do not allow their number plate database information to be used for advertising purposes, itâs been necessary to use machine learning to recognize the model and color of cars passing by billboards, in order to target that specific driver.
Creative can then be tailored to each driver, whether that is serving adverts for a new model of the same car or promoting new products that are relevant to that particular driver demographic, the possibilities are endless.
Post-match sports analysis
Another very popular AI usage trend particularly in America, is AI generated post-match analysis pieces for various sports. Itâs only a matter of time before youâll be seeing automatically generated copy lines appearing on the adverts that you see, without you even realizing it!
The future
The future uses for AI and ML are proliferating across all industries and markets. We are just at the tip of the iceberg in terms of AIâs potential applications in OOH, and we expect to see some incredible leaps in the coming 6-12 months.
Our ability to accumulate, calculate, interrogate, dissect, analyse and disseminate, large amounts of data on the fly is increasing, whether that be for a data driven dynamic campaign or for an interactive campaign where applications learn behaviors to improve the user journey.
The added benefits of 5G connectivity will only help to accelerate our ability to utilize AI across the OOH technical landscape. However, it could be a case of âall the gear, no ideaâ, so we really need the creative community to come along on this journey, with ideas, concepts and âmoonshotâ thinking.
As an industry we have a responsibility to educate peers in the ideation world, showcasing the potential for this technology to creative directors, copywriters, art directors, strategists as well as clients in marketing departments.
