Hey AI, Are You Telling Google About Me?
A Personal Dive Into the Algorithmic Mirror It started with a simple, almost paranoid question—but one that feels increasingly valid in the age of digital surveillance: “Do you report cookies to Google or is it just my phone/browser doing so? Because often times I’ll talk to you about something and a short while later I’ll see an ad or video for it.” That question wasn’t rhetorical—it came…

The Role of Cloud Computing in Digital Transformation for SMBs
One key driver of digital transformation for SMBs is cloud computing. By leveraging cloud technologies, SMBs can enhance their operational efficiency, scalability, and flexibility, transform their business processes, and achieve new heights of success.
Understanding Cloud Computing
Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services, such as storage, processing power, and applications, over the Internet. Instead of relying on on-premises servers and infrastructure, businesses can access these services on a pay-as-you-go basis from cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
Tumblr media
Types of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing can be categorized into three main types, each offering different levels of control, flexibility, and management:
1. Public Cloud
Public cloud services are operated by third-party providers and made available to multiple users over the Internet. Examples include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. This model offers cost-effectiveness and scalability but may have security and compliance concerns for sensitive data.
2. Private Cloud
A private cloud is dedicated to a single organization, offering greater control and security. It can be hosted on-premises or by a third-party provider. This option is ideal for SMBs that require stringent security and regulatory compliance.
3. Hybrid Cloud
A hybrid cloud combines elements of both public and private clouds, allowing SMBs to balance scalability and security. Businesses can keep critical workloads on private clouds while leveraging the public cloud for less sensitive operations.
“Cloud services provide SMBs with the ability to rapidly adopt new IT solutions and deploy additional storage capacity as needed, making it easier to keep up with digital transformation.”
— Data Centre Review
Cloud Solution Service Models for SMBs
Cloud computing services are typically divided into three key models:
1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
IaaS provides virtualized computing resources over the internet, including storage, networking, and virtual machines. It allows SMBs to avoid investing in expensive hardware and instead rent infrastructure on a flexible basis. Examples include AWS EC2 and Google Compute Engine.
2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
PaaS offers a development and deployment environment in the cloud, including operating systems, databases, and application development tools. This model enables SMBs to build and deploy applications without worrying about infrastructure management. Examples include Microsoft Azure App Services and Google App Engine.
3. Software as a Service (SaaS)
SaaS provides ready-to-use applications over the Internet, eliminating the need for installation and maintenance. Common examples include Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Salesforce. This model is cost-effective and easily accessible for SMBs looking to streamline operations.
Driving Digital Transformation
By adopting cloud computing, SMBs can drive their digital transformation efforts and gain a competitive edge. Cloud technologies enable businesses to innovate faster, respond to market changes, and deliver enhanced customer experiences.
Here are some ways SMBs can leverage cloud computing for digital transformation:
Data Analytics: Cloud-based analytics tools allow businesses to gather, process, and analyze large volumes of data. SMBs can gain valuable insights into customer behaviour, market trends, and operational performance, informing data-driven decision-making.
Collaboration and Communication: Cloud-based collaboration tools, such as Microsoft Teams and Slack, facilitate seamless communication and teamwork. These platforms support real-time collaboration, file sharing, and project management, improving overall productivity.
Customer Engagement: Cloud-based customer engagement platforms, such as CRM systems, help SMBs manage customer interactions, track sales leads, and personalize marketing efforts. This leads to improved customer satisfaction and loyalty.
E-Commerce: Cloud hosting solutions provide the infrastructure needed to run e-commerce websites and applications. SMBs can scale their online presence, manage inventory, and process transactions efficiently, driving growth in the digital marketplace.
Key Benefits of Cloud Computing for SMBs
1. Cost Savings
SMBs often operate with limited budgets, making large capital expenditures on IT infrastructure impractical. Cloud computing eliminates the need for expensive hardware and maintenance, reducing upfront costs and shifting expenses to a predictable subscription model.
2. Scalability and Flexibility
With cloud-based solutions, SMBs can scale resources up or down based on demand. This flexibility allows businesses to respond to market changes, expand operations, and deploy new applications without significant investments in physical infrastructure.
3. Enhanced Collaboration
Cloud-based tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Slack enable teams to collaborate in real time, regardless of location. This is especially valuable in today’s remote and hybrid work environments, improving productivity and communication.
4. Improved Security and Compliance
Many SMBs lack the resources to implement robust cybersecurity measures. Cloud providers invest heavily in security protocols, offering features such as encryption, multi-factor authentication, and regular security updates. Additionally, compliance with industry regulations is easier with built-in security frameworks provided by cloud vendors.
5. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
Data loss can be catastrophic for any business. Cloud computing offers automatic backups, disaster recovery options, and redundancy, ensuring that critical business data remains secure and accessible even in the face of cyberattacks or natural disasters.
6. Access to Advanced Technologies
Cloud platforms enable SMBs to leverage cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and big data analytics. These tools help businesses gain insights, automate processes, and enhance customer engagement.
Implementation Strategies for SMBs
Successfully adopting cloud computing requires a strategic approach. Here are key steps SMBs can take:
1. Assess Business Needs
Identify the specific pain points cloud computing can address, such as improving collaboration, reducing IT costs, or enhancing data security.
2. Choose the Right Cloud Model
Based on security, scalability, and budget considerations, decide whether a public, private, or hybrid cloud is the best fit.
3. Select a Reliable Cloud Provider
Evaluate different providers based on cost, security measures, compliance, and service-level agreements (SLAs) to ensure they align with business goals.
4. Plan for Data Migration
Develop a step-by-step migration plan, starting with less critical workloads and gradually transitioning to the cloud. Engage IT experts or cloud consultants if needed.
5. Train Employees
Ensure staff is equipped with the necessary skills to work efficiently with cloud-based tools. Offer training sessions and create best practices for security and usage.
6. Monitor and Optimize Performance
Regularly assess cloud usage, optimize resource allocation, and update security protocols to maintain efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
As technology continues to evolve, cloud computing will play an even greater role in digital transformation. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), edge computing, and serverless architectures will offer SMBs even more opportunities to innovate and streamline operations.  SMBs that embrace cloud technology today will be better positioned to adapt to future technological advancements and market demands, ensuring long-term growth and competitiveness.
While cloud computing offers numerous advantages, SMBs must also address challenges such as data migration, integration with existing systems, and vendor reliability. Choosing the right cloud provider and strategy is essential for a successful digital transformation journey. Additionally, concerns about data privacy, potential downtime, and the need for staff training should be carefully managed. However, with proper planning, these challenges can be overcome, allowing businesses to fully unlock the potential of cloud computing.

the scale of AI's ecological footprint
standalone version of my response to the following:
"you need soulless art? [...] why should you get to use all that computing power and electricity to produce some shitty AI art? i don’t actually think you’re entitled to consume those resources." "i think we all deserve nice things. [...] AI art is not a nice thing. it doesn’t meaningfully contribute to us thriving and the cost in terms of energy use [...] is too fucking much. none of us can afford to foot the bill." "go watch some tv show or consume some art that already exists. […] you know what’s more environmentally and economically sustainable […]? museums. galleries. being in nature."
you can run free and open source AI art programs on your personal computer, with no internet connection. this doesn't require much more electricity than running a resource-intensive video game on that same computer. i think it's important to consume less. but if you make these arguments about AI, do you apply them to video games too? do you tell Fortnite players to play board games and go to museums instead?
speaking of museums: if you drive 3 miles total to a museum and back home, you have consumed more energy and created more pollution than generating AI images for 24 hours straight (this comes out to roughly 1400 AI images). "being in nature" also involves at least this much driving, usually. i don't think these are more environmentally-conscious alternatives.
obviously, an AI image model costs energy to train in the first place, but take Stable Diffusion v2 as an example: it took 40,000 to 60,000 kWh to train. let's go with the upper bound. if you assume ~125g of CO2 per kWh, that's ~7.5 tons of CO2. to put this into perspective, a single person driving a single car for 12 months emits 4.6 tons of CO2. meanwhile, for example, the creation of a high-budget movie emits 2840 tons of CO2.
is the carbon cost of a single car being driven for 20 months, or 1/378th of a Marvel movie, worth letting anyone with a mid-end computer, anywhere, run free offline software that consumes a gaming session's worth of electricity to produce hundreds of images? i would say yes. in a heartbeat.
even if you see creating AI images as "less soulful" than consuming Marvel/Fortnite content, it's undeniably "more useful" to humanity as a tool. not to mention this usefulness includes reducing the footprint of creating media. AI is more environment-friendly than human labor on digital creative tasks, since it can get a task done with much less computer usage, doesn't commute to work, and doesn't eat.
and speaking of eating, another comparison: if you made an AI image program generate images non-stop for every second of every day for an entire year, you could offset your carbon footprint by… eating 30% less beef and lamb. not pork. not even meat in general. just beef and lamb.
the tech industry is guilty of plenty of horrendous stuff. but when it comes to the individual impact of AI, saying "i don’t actually think you’re entitled to consume those resources. do you need this? is this making you thrive?" to an individual running an AI program for 45 minutes a day per month is equivalent to questioning whether that person is entitled to a single 3 mile car drive once per month or a single meatball's worth of beef once per month. because all of these have the same CO2 footprint.
so yeah. i agree, i think we should drive less, eat less beef, stream less video, consume less. but i don't think we should tell people "stop using AI programs, just watch a TV show, go to a museum, go hiking, etc", for the same reason i wouldn't tell someone "stop playing video games and play board games instead". i don't think this is a productive angle.
(sources and number-crunching under the cut.)
good general resource: GiovanH's article "Is AI eating all the energy?", which highlights the negligible costs of running an AI program, the moderate costs of creating an AI model, and the actual indefensible energy waste coming from specific companies deploying AI irresponsibly.
CO2 emissions from running AI art programs: a) one AI image takes 3 Wh of electricity. b) one AI image takes 1mn in, for example, Midjourney. c) so if you create 1 AI image per minute for 24 hours straight, or for 45 minutes per day for a month, you've consumed 4.3 kWh. d) using the UK electric grid through 2024 as an example, the production of 1 kWh releases 124g of CO2. therefore the production of 4.3 kWh releases 533g (~0.5 kg) of CO2.
CO2 emissions from driving your car: cars in the EU emit 106.4g of CO2 per km. that's 171.19g for 1 mile, or 513g (~0.5 kg) for 3 miles.
costs of training the Stable Diffusion v2 model: quoting GiovanH's article linked in 1. "Generative models go through the same process of training. The Stable Diffusion v2 model was trained on A100 PCIe 40 GB cards running for a combined 200,000 hours, which is a specialized AI GPU that can pull a maximum of 300 W. 300 W for 200,000 hours gives a total energy consumption of 60,000 kWh. This is a high bound that assumes full usage of every chip for the entire period; SD2’s own carbon emission report indicates it likely used significantly less power than this, and other research has shown it can be done for less." at 124g of CO2 per kWh, this comes out to 7440 kg.
CO2 emissions from red meat: a) carbon footprint of eating plenty of red meat, some red meat, only white meat, no meat, and no animal products the difference between a beef/lamb diet and a no-beef-or-lamb diet comes down to 600 kg of CO2 per year. b) Americans consume 42g of beef per day. this doesn't really account for lamb (egads! my math is ruined!) but that's about 1.2 kg per month or 15 kg per year. that single piece of 42g has a 1.65kg CO2 footprint. so our 3 mile drive/4.3 kWh of AI usage have the same carbon footprint as a 12g piece of beef. roughly the size of a meatball [citation needed].

One assessment suggests that ChatGPT, the chatbot created by OpenAI in San Francisco, California, is already consuming the energy of 33,000 homes. It’s estimated that a search driven by generative AI uses four to five times the energy of a conventional web search. Within years, large AI systems are likely to need as much energy as entire nations. And it’s not just energy. Generative AI systems need enormous amounts of fresh water to cool their processors and generate electricity. In West Des Moines, Iowa, a giant data-centre cluster serves OpenAI’s most advanced model, GPT-4. A lawsuit by local residents revealed that in July 2022, the month before OpenAI finished training the model, the cluster used about 6% of the district’s water. As Google and Microsoft prepared their Bard and Bing large language models, both had major spikes in water use — increases of 20% and 34%, respectively, in one year, according to the companies’ environmental reports. One preprint suggests that, globally, the demand for water for AI could be half that of the United Kingdom by 2027. In another, Facebook AI researchers called the environmental effects of the industry’s pursuit of scale the “elephant in the room”. Rather than pipe-dream technologies, we need pragmatic actions to limit AI’s ecological impacts now.

bakugo katsuki x pro hero sister headcannons ♡
labels. she/her pronouns, y/n is used, reader resembles masaru’s personality.
warnings. light cursing, sibling rivalry/banter, mild violence (sparring), light angst, katsuki being katsuki, occasional soft!katsuki moments, ai used for quirk, light fluff. self indulgent as a older sister lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as kids, katsuki was always trying to one-up you. if you learned a new move, he needed to master it ten times faster. it was exhausting for your parents, but you secretly loved it.
it started as rivalry—he wanted to beat you. but over time, he stopped comparing and started watching. you were sharp, confident, and strong as hell. and despite how much he grumbled about you being annoying, you were also the reason he never let himself fall behind.
now that you’re both older, katsuki’s picked up this habit of not liking people talking about you in any way that sounds remotely flirtatious. especially if it’s denki. katsuki hates how much denki likes you. it’s hilarious.
âťťwhy the hell was sparky looking at you like that?!âťž
❝katsuki. you’re being dramatic.❞
âťťnah. he wants to die.âťž
people would stop and stare when you two walked down the street. not just because of the familiar fierce expressions, perfect mix of mitsuki’s striking beauty and masaru’s soft features.
your mom teases that you both get that overprotective streak from her. your dad just sighs in the background and adjusts his glasses.
your mom is insanely proud of you. you’re her clone in all the best ways: attitude when necessary, but calculated grace when it matters. she calls you her ❝perfect little menace.❞
your dad is your soft spot. you’re a total daddy’s girl and katsuki pretends to gag whenever he sees you two reading together or fixing up old support gear in the garage.
sunday mornings in the bakugo household are sacred. you and katsuki make breakfast together—him handling the fire, you handling the precision. sometimes you both burn things on purpose just to irritate mitsuki.
Tumblr media
your hero name is miststrike, and your costume is sleek, black and with accents of your favorite color, or just all black, with specialized fabric that helps concentrate your mist in high-pressure areas like your wrists and collarbone. katsuki thought it was badass and totally jacked some design elements for his own.
❝…tch. don’t flatter yourself. i didn’t steal that much.❞
âťťyour gauntlets are literally based on my fog-chambers.âťž
âťťshut up.âťž
during katsuki’s internship with shoto and izuku, endeavor brought you up while training with him. katsuki nearly exploded on the spot. ❝your sister’s quirk is very controlled and calculated. you’re… emotionally driven.❞
❝don’t compare me to her!❞
he does compare himself to you. all the time.
ignition mist is terrifying up close. slippery terrain, no visibility, and then boom—you snap your fingers and light the whole room up.
your quirk has a strange synergy with katsuki’s. you can trap people in mist, and katsuki can blast them once they’re disoriented. in simulations, you two are basically a nightmare to face. one creates chaos, the other delivers the final blow.
katsuki lives for training with you. you don’t hold back, and he respects the hell out of that. even if it means getting sent flying across the training field.
❝i said go full out, dammit! don’t treat me like i’m weak!❞
âťťyou say that every time, and yet every time you end up with a concussion.âťž
âťťworth it.âťž
sometimes you train at night, just the two of you. the city skyline in the background, the sharp scent of smoke and chemical mist in the air. no words needed—just shared movement and mutual respect.
there was one time you accidentally overdid it and katsuki slammed into a wall so hard he cracked it. you rushed to him, panicked, but he just laughed like a psycho. âťťyou finally got serious. damn right.âťž
you nearly cried. he still teases you about it.
izuku calls you ❝y/n-nii❞ and it drives katsuki insane. you’re everything izuku admires in a hero—smart, skilled, and kind to everyone, including him. katsuki gets jealous but pretends not to be.
izuku once made a passing comment like, âťťy/n-nii is so graceful and smart. i wish i could be like her.âťž
katsuki almost set the common room couch on fire.
âťťshut the hell up about my sister in front of my friends, nerd!âťž
❝but she’s so cool, kacchan!❞
âťťi said shut up!âťž
kirishima looks up to you the way katsuki refuses to say he does. he always asks for advice about hero work and battle ethics. you always tell him he’s already got what it takes. katsuki scowls every time.
shoto once compared you to fuyumi and katsuki nearly detonated. ❝my sister’s cooler.❞
Tumblr media
you use glasses sometimes, usually while working late or reading hero reports. katsuki has a photo of you in them, but if anyone ever sees it, he will literally combust.
he got his love for loud and classical music from you. you used to blast your playlists in your room, and little katsuki would sit in the hallway pretending he wasn’t listening. now he copies your playlists and pretends they’re his.
you’ve got a soft spot for him, even if you act like you don’t. you’re always one step behind him at competitions, watching from the shadows just in case he needs you. he knows. he just never says it.
he still calls you ❝sis❞ when no one’s around.
katsuki doesn’t know how to say he appreciates you, so he shows it in little ways. like handing you cold drinks after training or silently plugging in your dead phone when you’re passed out on the couch.
he actually listens when you give him advice. he pretends not to. pretends to roll his eyes and scoff. but he hears everything you say. especially when it comes to hero strategy or emotional regulation (which he’ll never admit he struggles with)
you’re one of the only people who can tell when he’s having a bad day before he explodes about it. and you don’t ask questions. you just sit beside him, play his favorite songs, and wait. he always ends up muttering something like ❝…today was bullshit.❞ and that’s your cue to listen.
on your 19th birthday, katsuki didn’t say anything until after everyone left. you were sitting on the balcony alone when he joined you, dropped a wrapped box in your lap, and muttered,
❝you’re annoying. but… you’re the reason i’m where i’m at. don’t get sappy or anything. just open it.❞
it was a new set of gauntlets, upgraded and built to compress mist in smaller chambers. custom-made. you cried. safe to say he cried a little too.

Still thinking about "Dot and Bubble."
Specifically, I'm thinking about how the racists of FineTime aren't just written to be cruel and entitled, but downright childish too. Lindy - in a move that dovetails nicely into the episode's commentary on social media - has the attention span of a toddler, going on and on about how boring work is even though, from what we're shown, she doesn't have to do anything other than sit there and socialize, which is presumably what she'd be doing if she didn't have to work, right? But since this is something she has to do per orders of the gross old people, she complains. "You're no fun!" she yells at Gothic Paul, the only one in her group taking a mature stance on this issue (and, notably, the only one with a very small number of subscribers).
Lindy lacks the maturity and critical thinking skills we would expect from someone her age. Again, this is definitely a layer of the social media side of the episode's thesis, but she nevertheless demonstrates a kind of emotional dysregulation that's usually only seen in younger, developing children. Lindy does not think for herself and cannot adapt to changes in routine/the way things are "supposed" to be. When told a fact - the police are unavailable - Lindy repeats, "but I really need the police" over and over as if her need is going to magic up a change in reality. She parrots rules and rejects them in equal measure, driven solely by her current desires: "We don't do that [lower the bubble]."/"I can do whatever I want!" She moves from disgusted to infatuated to angry in the blink of an eye, with her anger characterized by childish outbursts and language: "Now shut up I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!" When faced with something life-threatening, Lindy's response is to a) distract herself (by watching Ricky) and b) find a hiding place. Even taking her terror into account, she responds to these situations like someone far younger would. If I cover my eyes the bad thing disappears. If I hide under the bed, I'm safe.
And of course, Lindy's body is monitored in the way you would a child's. She's constantly watched by others, both her peers and, presumably, by the Homeworld. She's told when she needs to use the restroom which for me was VERY evocative of a parent speaking to their potty training child, trying to get them to articulate when they need to go by informing them of when it's most likely. Hell, Lindy literally can't walk without the assistance of this AI parent.
Yes, there are plenty of moments that evoke the very stereotypical, entitled teenager - talk of "partying," bragging about clothes, being obsessed with the guy online - but even more, I think, evoke the child. When Lindy plays the recording of "Mummy," smiling shyly at the praise before throwing out the kind of insults you'd expect to hear on an elementary school playground - "You're stupid" - she reads like she's a kid. Which is a hell of a commentary on her racism. The episode doesn't say that Lindy is literally a child (she's not, she even snaps as much). The episode also doesn't try to claim that being childlike equals harmless (quite the opposite). But equating racism with a childish, dangerously inept, can't-even-walk-or-use-the-bathroom-by-herself white woman... damn if that's not a statement.
