Amaris listens in silence. Mind churning out dots in that connected like constellations and possibilities. She reaches up to adjust a hair stick that pressed on her scalp uncomfortably. "I'm not as brave, strong willed, as I seem, nor as vengeful. It's easy to create a persona, who one is is when the situation becomes literal and tangible. Words aren't something we should put too much weight in unless actions mirror it." She coaches gently breaking the image of strength she had wrapped around herself for the young woman to learn from and apply. "I just want peace, and to take out a monster that devours since no one else seems capable of removing him. He always gets away." She sighs deeply, stretched beyond measure behind her eyes but alive and burning to reach her goal. "Happy belated birthday by the way."

Her buffed nails touch the hazy photograph after giving the red head-banded woman an authentic smile. Tracing the face with almond styled nails, she seemed lost as those eyes, a hunters, reminded her of memories long shoved into places she had walled off. He ate as he pleased and always left something behind. The fox mask was new, it must be a recent photograph. She began her tale softly as if speaking too loudly would call it all crashing back into the space unannounced.

"He was a part of the Kingscholar's at one time, associated with the Shonenheit's like my mom had been in passing. She never spoke much of how she got involved, that she just did with them. But that was a long time ago now. I doubt he stayed where he could be identified. Probably pinned any proof on another sorry soul, like he did with my father. This monster and my mother worked together often in her early years before she joined the Kingscholar Family. They traveled the world and gained skills that made them valuable assests. The King's father was in charge then.

"Farena was in practice to take over when my mother was important to the Kingscholar family's expansion back then. They were powerful but "needed more roots and connections" is how she put it. Stability. She was able to add padding to their portfolios, made diamond from coal so to speak. Walked the darkness and brought back gems of value.

"The monster was more of a front face, he managed. And managed well beyond anyone's dreams. Suddenly, order was easy and Farena had a member who didn't need to be told what to do. They were on a mission when they met my father. That's where the killings started happening around the city more frequently. Turns out no man likes it when his place is threatened by a new opponent." Her tongue clicks in disdain, nose scrunching as she recalled her mother's words.

"No one knew, and he's clever enough to cover his tracks unless he wants to be found. Farena took over unaware, a few years later, that he had a killer among other titles in his ranks. No one knew and after I was born, around the age of 6, my father suddenly passed away." The tone changes as she recalls, finally living in memory, real time. Eyes distant.

"My mother was framed since poison was found in his system—she specialized in poison—so she went to Farena, for protection. But he wouldn't listen. Said it wasn't possible. The man who she accused was someone he trusted and she had left the family after I was born to keep me safe and so I would have parents growing up, or at least one. Farena saw that as betrayal to the Family by choosing her own. He told her not to return and that my father's death was on her hands. That she was lucky he wasn't asking for a life for my fathers." Those hands and the photograph fall to her lap in a mourning posture. "He thought she had killed him cause no one else could handle poison like her. At least in delivery and method. They never looked at him."

"The next ten years were hell as she fought to keep her and I alive while that monster tormented us and pulled the strings. Inching his way into our home. He was obsessed with her, and had been since they first met and decided to join the Mafia together. The police were in his pocket, papers went missing, even our rent was covered and food appeared at our door. The Families wouldn't help, they assumed Farena's judgements were true. The police didn't catch on to the lie for another decade and by then it was too late to save my mother."

The photo gets set next to Reagan's cup. "I know who he is. He didn't wear a mask growing up, nor did he wear it when he came for me. Like I knew he would." She lets out a sharp exhale. "He calls me Mira... thinks I'm my mom now since we look alike in everything but hair and eye color. That she's still alive after what he did to her. He struggles with the past and present bleeding together in certain situations."

Amaris pauses realizing she'd been babbling on and on. Needing to tell someone her story after sitting in silence for give or take a few years off of two decades. "I have resentment towards Farena for how he handled things. I can only hope he learned to be better. After all a boss takes responsibility for his underlings. And he looked the other way. I don't know what happened within the families back then or how the monster got out, but he did."

Her eyes flick to Reagan, fingers gently circling the rim of her teacup. "I have time, and I'd love to hear why everybody's on edge regarding you so don't hesitate to speak." An amused lip tilt, framed in red lipstick adds some heart to the cold story narrated earlier.

"Further Malleus is fond of you, deeply. Though it's clear you know that despite your modesty by your response. He's faithful, and honestly that's a comfort cause I'm not looking to romance him, he isn't my type I assure you, and it was concerning when he reached out. I do answer DMs by the way and never overlook a call for help, I wouldn't be in this line of work if I did.

"Frankly, I'm overly cautious with the Mafia, as you can understand why I hope. I'm not afraid of them in the traditional sense. My parents were in the Mafia. I'm aware of what they're capable of and I know that I am alone and they are many. If they wanted me gone, I would be hence my hesitation and guarded behavior or maybe the confusion as of late. You're lucky to be protected, treasured, and wanted Reagan. You're devastatingly safe...which makes me ask why you are injured. And how this man," she taps the photo, "got you of all people? And why? He very well could be devolving after all this time. The Black Dahlia is symbolic of darker matters. Betrayal, sadness, unsolved murder. Even as it's not a real flower in botany, just a turn of phrase, it's left an impact and is often used to describe cases that are ugly and tainted with twisting accounts that have no clear answer."

She goes on. "The fox mask is Japanese in style, foxes often symbolize trickers, giving what seems to be wishes or good advice, things even, before destruction comes. I would say he wanted you to photograph him like this. It's rushed and a last minute decision by the lack of prep work. Which means he was provoked." Her gaze levels on Reagan as if expecting to hear just what created this issue, pulling apart everything and seeing where things could fit, never assuming, but unraveling each layer and waiting for the proper party to sew it back into place with all the pieces. Patience. "Just what is the mafia doing to stirr up this monsters attempts at mockery and peacocking? I'd be careful how far you all press him. He's already fooled each family once, he can easily do it again. That's his message here I'm guessing. Wearing the Dahlia has probably many meanings. But no doubt to draw attention to his history. He wants you all to know how badly you all screwed up, humiliation. Or since my story wasn't recorded in public record in detail, it means you all made a mess and hit a hornets nest not knowing what it was. And now it's a dangerous annoyance that keeps growing. Wasps are a nuisance until the stings start adding up and before you know it, your dead."

She sits back in her chair finishing her diagnostic scan of the situation. Hoping for answers as she'd given plenty of her own to the young woman who had a file just as she did boxed away in cardboard, hidden in the shadows of her apartment. She'd taken to mapping lately as it allowed her to see everything at once. Her college degrees weren't for show and she hadn't stopped studying since graduating. She'd rather people not know just how much she was capable of, let alone the monster that sent her letters and care packages like a desperate lover. Sometimes it's better to be underestimated than seen as what one truly is.

You noticed she started fiddling with everything her nimble fingers could reach: the cup handle, her pure silver cufflinks resembling little flowers, the prominent details of the little cell phone Malleus had given her…

“You see, I need informations. You wondered how that thing even fitted inside her small bag.

She flipped through the pages with meticulousness, searching for something she was sure she’d put in between those yellowish papers.

Reagan slided across the table a photo, facedown, waiting for you to pick it up and look at it.

“Tsu— I mean, Malleus is convinced that the man is part of either the Shonenheit family or the Kingscholar family, but I don’t think so. I think he’s someone outside the main mafia families, someone that’s trying to make a name for himself, gather subordinates, comrades in arms and discredit the reputation of the most important families to then take their place. I know it seems like a conjecture out of thin air and with little evidence to support it, but trust me...something about him is different.”

As you looked at the photo, a blurry picture of a back garden taken from a window, your eyes spotted that figure in the foliage, hidden by the night. The tailored suit with a fake burgundy black dahlia sawn with imprecision on the buttonhole, the pale mask of a fox with shakily painted details that hid those insane eyes — those same eyes full of sadistic enjoyment of having cornered someone weaker than him, destroyed the peace of a safe environment such as a house. Those same eyes you saw in between the steam and that you kept seeing behind your eyelids when your sleep was troubled.

A shiver ran across your spine.

It was him, no doubts about it, your guts told you so.

“The reason why Mallues believes so is a bit macabre and it’s also the reason why the three families seems to be on thin ice when I pop out as a subject in conversations, but it’s also a long story…and I’m afraid I robbed you of much precious time already. Also, you needn’t to worry about Malleus asking for favors out of you, aside from the banter you keep up with the Kingscholar family I doubt he has any interests in you as a person. Many women, more beautiful and powerful than me, try constantly to gain his attention but he always says there’s no woman as charming as I, his precious calendula. Don’t know if that’s true but maybe you can read more into it than I can.”

So, Malleus Draconia was a devoted man, uh?

Your theories on the matter would wait until you were back on your loyal laptop. She piqued your curiosity with just one sentence. If Reagan was connected to that man you needed to know what else she was hiding behind that shy smile and overly polite manners.

Mistress was reviewing the reports on the Winter Soldiers from days past. Her assistant came running in screaming, “We found them!” The found the depot where the Winter Soldiers were being held in deep freeze. “Finally! Take 3 of them to the dungeon below. I want Dr. Zola’s former cellmate to have a conversation with them!”

Johann Fennhoff, (link above), remembered everything Dr. Zola told him while they were cellmates in prison. Inspired by his work, he took up the mantel after he escaped. Dr. Zola remained but Fennhoff learned that his mind was “uploaded” into a computer. Zola continued his work hiding behind SHIELD. When Dr. Zola’s mind was destroyed in the when the bunker was bombed by Crossbones, Mistress had her army search for Fennhoff. When they found him, she offered her facilities and money to fund his research. She explicitly told him his focus was on the Winter Soldier program.

There weren’t many Hydra members left from the old cult. Those who were gone had made a pact that they would pass on their work to at least 2 others (Cut off 1 head, 2 shall take its place). The Avengers has made good on their promise to hunt down Hydra and destroy it. All of the members, every single one of them, went into hiding after the Triskelion fell. However SHIELD had raided every last know secret base and arrested as many as they could find. They were placed into the Raft as well. Unfortunately for her, only a few of them remained free. Mistress hunted them down and had them brought to her base.

The most important member, beside Zola, was Baron Heinrich Zemo. After trying to destroy the Avengers using Barnes, he was unattainable in the RAFT prison. They also had his book from the days as the hander of the Winter Soldier program. They used it to deprogram Barnes. She was upset as she wanted to use Barnes to kill (Y/N). This would have killed Captain America; seeing his best friend kill his lover. However, Crossbones and his team were a bit to overzealous in handling him. Referring to Barnes as “the Assest”, Crossbones was angry that Barnes rescued Rogers from the the Potomac River. Barnes is now in a coma.

Steve may have been successful in rescuing his imprisoned team members but Hydra couldn’t penetrate it. Steve had the plans from the SHIELD computers and was able to bypass it. Tony was shocked when this happened. He made adjustments to the system, getting any anomalies sent to his watch in real time. Mistress tried several times, hiding behind Crossbones, she was thoroughly frustrated she couldn’t rescue them.

Mistress was alerted on her tablet that Crossbones and his team arrived at the complex. She slams her fist on the table. “I want Crossbones in here now!!!” Her assistant ran out of the room scared to death. A few minutes later Crossbones entered.

“Well? What happened?” – Mistress smirked. “We don’t know. I haven’t heard from my agent who was in the Avengers complex.” “She failed and she’s DEAD!” Crossbones was shocked out of his mind! “How did you know Gita’s dead?” Crossbones was getting angry.

“I have my ways. She was equipped with a tracking device; it also registered her heart rate. When it flat-lined I knew she was gone. And don’t think I didn’t know about your plan. I knew you and she were lovers and were going to leave Hydra after Captain America was dead! By the way, all of my army have the device, including you.” She sneered. He winched. “You Bitch!!” She slapped him across the face. She went behind her desk and pulled out a gun. She turned and shot him in the arm. Crossbones didn’t scream, he wouldn’t give her the pleasure. “Watch your mouth!! I won’t think twice about taking you out.”

She calmly sat down at her desk. “Now where’s (Y/N)?” “I don’t know. The place went into lockdown after Gita failed. (Y/N) is one of the best agents SHIELD has.” (Crossbones) “I WANT HER FOUND!!! I’m so close to finishing Captain America off! I will not FAIL!!”

One of her technical analysts ran in the room! “I think I know where she is, We only found one anomaly, there is a strange police report from an area about 5 hrs from the Avengers compound; somewhere in Maine. I think it might be her. The report said the woman was looking for a haunted mill?? Might be her. She may be trying to hide.”

Mistress smiled. “Get it verified. I want to know ASAP if it’s her.” “Yes Mistress!” He turned and ran away.

“Now let’s go visit our guests.”

Descending the stairs, she entered the dungeon; Crossbones followed. Three of the Winter Soldiers were chained to the wall and unconscious. They were defrosted very quickly. Fennhoff was reviewing the book with the phrases programmed into their heads, just in case they wanted any of the Winter Soldiers to be reset. This was due to the unfreezing process. They also had been in cryo-freeze for so long, they might have lost their programming.

“When will the 3 of them be ready?” “It’s already done. With their conditioning, it didn’t take long. They now have the full Winter Soldier persona.” (Fennhoff sneered)

One of them looked at Mistress; he had no life in his eyes. They were black as night. He sneered at them.

“Excellent!” (Mistress) Fennhoff bowed to her. Crossbones was furious! He wanted to kill Captain America and you, not them.

Mistress and Crossbones ascended the stairs back to her office. She dismissed him, wanting to be alone. Crossbones went to the med wing to get his bullet wound sewn up. She took the picture out of the drawer; a tear went down her cheek. She sat at her desk and looked up, “Yes… soon!”

The tech ran back into the room panicking. “It’s her! She’s in the town where the police report is from. A report came from a waitress in a town on the route of the bus, the bus station origin is near the Avengers Compound.

“Get Crossbones and get the jet ready, I’m going. Let’s get her! Now!!” (Mistress)

Evan’s Escapees: Part One (Section 2/2 Kobold Tunnels)

After four months of being in prison Averil decided it was time to escape and tried to pick the lock on his cage, having smuggled his thieves tools into the prison with him. As he began to pick the lock Inzid made a deal with him that he would free him as well and they would both escape together. The odds of them both getting out was very probable as the guards no longer came to the hallway of cells the party was in seeing as Gnomey Gnome would throw feces at them and Thirnar would curse at them. Averil’s attempt was unfortunately foiled because as he began a rumbling and scratching sound began to emanate from above them. Suddenly the roof above the end of the hall broke and a swarm of kolbolds poured from the new hole in the ceiling. The kolbolds broke locks and killed guards as they swarmed their way down the hall and out of site.

Freed, the party left their cells and began to move quickly. Kovu, with the help of Geras removed the armour of a dead guard. Averil and Inzid began taking torches and making plans to escape through the hole left by the kolbolds. Thirnar and Geras armed themselves with spears left by fallen guards. The rest of the party decided to join Averil and Inzid in their escape and together climbed through the hole into the kolbold tunnels.

The kolbold tunnels led to a fork leading to what Thirnar discovered as a (pretty cleaned out) armoury, in which the party gathered what they could. the other end of the fork lead to a sleeping chamber for the kolbolds. Both chambers had paths leading off to further halls leading off. The party took their time looking around the area they were in before moving on. They discovered that some of the wall supports for the tunnel, had a mechanism that would cause the support and tunnel to collapse. Unfortunately they hung around this area too long and not only did the kolbolds who attacked the prison begin to come back through the hole but a swarm began to come from the tunnel at the far end of the armoury. Averil used the mechanism on one of the pillars close to the hole to collapse the tunnel on the returning kolbolds, but the ones advancing from the armoury quickly had them backed up to the fork. The supports at the fork had the mechanism on them so the group decided to that their only option was to escape to the sleeping chamber, collapsing the tunnel and hoping to find a way out through the kolbolds tunnels offered. Kovu used an illusionary fire to keep the kolbolds back from the entrance to the fork as they all backed into the sleeping chamber and Averil, Inzid, and Geras pulled the four support mechanisms out collapsing it and sealing them inside the sleeping chamber. During the time they were doing this Gnomey Gnome as down a side tunnel, in the sleeping chamber, rolling in kolbold feces and then returning to the main chamber to roll in the hay beds made by the kolbolds (this is only mentioned because it becomes an important fact later).

Sealed inside the sleeping chamber the party’s only option was to continue out the other tunnel. This tunnel led them to a mass of interlocking sleeping chambers, with many side tunnels. Most of the side tunnels were more bathrooms for the previous kolbold residence, but one was an actual path that lead off deeper into the cave.

The path lead to a eating area with a small fire and a minimal amount of food rations. Gnomey Gnome stuffed his pockets as the rest of the party took what they could. Kovu found two spoons to use as an improvised instrument till he could replace his taken ones when captured. They explored the tunnels around the eating area finding three things in the result. The first was a strange dragon statue in a room that seemed to make an alter around the statue, with offerings of molded food and gems to it. The second was a single Kolbold whom ran from the party and collapsed the escape tunnel he left down behind him. And the third was a small (clearly kolbold) stone throne in a throne chamber. Suddenly a loud noise startled the party, upon investigation it was discovered that the entrance they used to enter the eating area, that lead off to the sleeping chambers, had collapsed. The party was trapped in the tunnels and the three connected chambers of the eating area, the throne, and the dragon statue.

Thirnar discovered that there was a space behind the throne and with the help of the others the throne was pushed aside. Behind it was a small tunnel that none but Gnomey Gnome could fit down. A breeze could be felt coming from it. Averil let Gnomey Gnome go through it on the condition that he would come back and tell them what he sees. The Gnome loved this idea and slipped down the tunnel, out of sight, leaving the party behind. The tunnel opened up to massive naturally formed cave system with a lot of kolbold buildings and activity. The kolbolds took no notice of the Gnome for some reason because his smell didn’t stand out for some reason. Gnomey Gnome returned to the party to reveal his discovery. The party discussed their options and found no way to get into the cave or keep the kolbolds at bay while they did. During this time Kovu had the idea that if the throne concealed a tunnel there may be a chance that the dragon statue may also be hiding something. On investigation his theory proved true and revealed a tunnel that if crouched they could all go down.

This tunnel lead the party to a large open cave area with stalactites, stalagmites, and an elevated slope that headed to a cliff on the opposite side of cave as they entered. On the cliff could not only be seen another tunnel leading off, but a few kolbolds. Suddenly from behind a stalagmite a cross bow bolt flew at the party. The kolbolds had ambushed them but the party quickly got to the defensive and started to fight back. A second surprise came as what looked like black masses fell from above and sent out a magical darkness around the person it attacked. The party was now under attack from not only Kolbolds but darkmantels. Using the walls to keep track of where they were and tracking the darkmantels with their eyes the party quickly dispatched of their opponents. Chairs broken into shields that were acquired back in the eating area, assested in the darkmantel defence. The entire party made it out of the conflict, but not without Thirnar, Averil, and Inzid taking some wounds, and Kovu using all his healing magic he could to heal them. Fortunately Averil and Geras were able to salvage the crossbows from the kolbolds so it wasn’t a complete loss for the party. They climbed the slant to the cliff and continued through the tunnel...

Tower-ing Fiction #6: The Pearl, Skyscraper (2018)

The Pearl, the fictional skyscraper and world’s tallest building, is not just the setting of much of the action—and light drama—of the film Skyscraper (dir. Rawson Marshall Thurber, 2018). Importantly, it is a construction that directly relies on the film’s genre forebearers, a symbolic edifice, making architectural and visual the pastiche that is the film itself.

Briefly, Skyscraper centers on Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) and his family, as they combat terrorist (who are really thieves) both inside and outside the about-to-open 225-story Pearl skyscraper, which dominates the Honk Kong skyline. The Pearl, built by Zhao Long Ji (Chin Han) can’t open until Sawyer gives his risk-assestment report—while he has been assessing the building, he and his family have been the building’s only residents on the 98th floor (the commercial floors below have already opened). A group of terrorists (via an inside man, of course) set fire to the middle of the building, shut off the fire-supression system via an offsite location (and Sawyer’s access device) and use the fire’s uward spread to try to get to Zhao’s data and money. Meanwhile, Sawyer must make his was back into the building above the fire while his wife, Sarah (Neve Campbell) tries to get their children below it. After a series of fairly predicatable events, Sawyer confronts the lead terrorist in spherical Pearl at the building’s top, using its imaging technology to trick him, saving the day.

Somewhat obviously, the movie is Die Hard (dir. John McTiernan) meets The Towering Inferno (dir. John Guillermin, 1974). But more than just mashing those plots together, Skyscraper is constructed around a fictional tower that appears in nearly ever scene, and which both symbolizes the joint Chinese-American market that it is obviously meant to satisfy, along with a plot that hinges on the interplay of its American and Chinese stars. From its opening scenes on, Skyscraper and The Pearl rely on the mutually-reinforcing dyad of Zhao and Sawyer, with the building itself built of that necessity.

Constructing The Pearl

The main body of the film (after a character-driven opening during which Sawyer is caught in an explosion he fails to prevent, costing him a leg) opens showing the construction of The Pearl in a glossy cable-news profile, with a timelapse of its construction and integration into the Hong Kong syline as well as the tourist-oriented commercial world of the film. This sequence establishes both the location as well as the internal details that will be prominently featured later in the film—the base of The Pearl sits directly on Victoria Harbor, with an internal structure filled with multi-story voids, which we later see will be spaces for wind turbines and a huge artium garden space.

Once it stands complete, its geography is quite well established, on the southern tip of Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙咀, or TST) peninsula in southern Kowloon. It is set between the tallest building in Hong Kong, The International Commerce Centre (環球貿易廣場 , or ICC, rising 1,588’), to its north-west [on the right in the still below] and Tower 2 of the International Finance Centre (國際金融中心二期, or 2IFC, rising 1,326’), to its south-west [across the bay, on the left in the still below]. Just south of The Pearl is the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (香港會議展覽中心 ), with its distinctive layered, curved roof [also left in the still below].

Much later in the film, this location is made even clearer when Inspector Wu (Byron Mann) helpfully circles The Pearl on a screen—essentially for the audience’s benefit—as he lays out possible escape routes by parachute from the top of The Pearl:

The opening promotional video also makes clear the layout of many of the floors on which the film will later set its action, as well as some of key locations and their mechanics—the wind turbines, an interior elevator, the sphrerical pearl at the top of the spire, etc.

All while also laying out the groupings of levels and which floors are open at the start of the film—the upper half is mostly closed, pending Sawyer’s final sign-off.

And futher, giving the audience a sense of scale, with The Pearl (at 3,500’) towering over the Burj Khalifa (برج خليفة‎, at 2,717’) and the Empire State Building (1,250’).

The Keys to The Pearl

The plot of Skyscraper hinges on Sawyer’s role in signing off on the safety of the top floors The Pearl, allowing it to open in full, fulfilling Zhao’s vision. He is given a MacGuffin access tablet early on that is paired to a facial scan, and which much fall into the hands of the terrorists to effect their plan. Thus his biometrics are made a unique way to access the building, which will later be extended to the rest of his body as he propels his way through the rest of the film.

His analysis of the safety of the tower provides a walkthrough of the systems that will soon be manipulated by the terrorist/thieves, and specifies an offsite control location, which in the film is the only other place that can manipulate the tower’s systems.

This early tour culminates with the myterious spherical Pearl at the top of the tower, which Zhao reveals to Sawyer contains a hall of mirrors—in the style of The Man with the Golden Gun (dir. Guy Hamilton, 1974) or John Wick, Chapter 2 (dir. Chad Stahelski, 2017)—and that via exterior cameras can project a seemless view of Honk Kong city-scape.

Until Zhao leaves Sawyer alone in wonder, the man in the sky.

Man in the Sky

Sawyer’s precarity above the Hong Kong skyline is a central motif in the film, and was part of the film’s marketing, including its theatrical posters.

This is in part because Skyscaper keeps Swayer outside of The Pearl for the early part of the action, with the plot forcing his wife and children to try to hide from the terrorists who set fire to the building’s middle floors, as Sawyer races across the city to reach them.

The fire spreads upward as the film progresses, with the fire supression system disabled by the baddies who have Sawyer’s device and are able to bring it to the offsite location, which sports a lovely horizonal display of The Pearl for monitoring purposes.

In communication with his wife, Sawyer realizes he must enter the building abover the fire, and does so in the film’s main set-piece, ultimately launching himself from an impossible 100+ story tall free-standing crane into a window he has broken out for just such a purpose.

His climactic jump staged in slow motion, with the iconic Tower 2 of the International Finance Center as background [center of frame, with the illuminated roof], which audiences might recognize as the tower from which Batman glides through Hong Kong in The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008).

The scene closes on a final slow-motion sequence, with Sawyer’s massive body back-lit as he flings himself through the broken window, visually harkening back to John McClane’s re-entry into Nakatomi Plaza in Die Hard. Though where McClane curls into the fetal position and slams through partially-shattered glass, the scene in Skyscraper plays up Sawyer’s superhuman and ultimately superheroic qualities.

Firey Ends

The rest of the film features familiar beats, are a wide variety of shots of The Pearl, including many mediated on screen, displays, phones, etc. But to close, I note the visual markers provided for viewers to help them track the upward progress of the fire and the the increasingly reduced paths for our heroes to elude the villains and/or leave The Pearl unscathed. For example, a huge many-storied garden antrium (with waterfall and pedistrian bridge) is established as Sawyer takes an elevator through the space early in the film, so that we will recognize the central bridge later, which the family must traverse.

Wind turbines in the upper portion of the tower constantly turn, as the elevator passes near them, and then challenge Sawyer, who must pass between their blades—twice, even—just before flames engulf them.

And finally, once the flames reach the spherical peral, Sawyer must save his daughter from the lead terrorist, Kores Botha (Roland Møller), using the imaging technology and ultimately the partially-destroyed floor to save the day.

Sarah Sawyer reboots the fire-supression system, and the film closes on the top of The Pearl now saved from the fire, the pearl at its tip ensconced in mist.

The Caveats for Health/Care at CES 2019

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a “caveat” is, “a warning to consider something before doing anything more.”

It is fitting that CES is held in Las Vegas, land of high risk and, with a lot of luck, reward. With that theme in mind, I depart LAS airport tonight on an aptly-named red-eye flight back home after spending an entire week here. I’m pondering not what I saw — some of which I covered daily over the past week — but what I didn’t see. Consider these the caveats for health/care at #CES2019. In no particular order…

Where was the Chairman of the FCC? Before last year’s CES, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had been working to eliminate net neutrality from United States communication policy. In June 2018, the FCC rolled back net neutrality, a policy that President Obama had put in place. Net neutrality is the requirement that Internet service providers (ISPs) treat all data the same regardless of type, destination, or original source. Simply put, net neutrality is the concept that all data are created equal. Without net neutrality, ISPs can charge consumers and customers different prices for different speeds of data traffic. I’ve asserted for many years that connectivity and broadband are a social determinant of health. Without online access, people can’t seek jobs, get educated, enroll in health insurance, socially connect with other people, or seek health information for self-care or diagnosed conditions on WebMD or “Dr. Google.” The lack of net neutrality for health care could further complicate and slow the adoption of telehealth, especially in rural and under-served areas. Last year, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai didn’t show up to CES 2018, reportedly because he had death threats related to his position on rejecting net neutrality. This year, Chairman Pai didn’t appear at CES, either, blaming this on the U.S. Federal government shutdown. Pai was scheduled, both years, to discuss Federal communications policy on a big stage with CTA President Gary Shapiro. And neither year did we CES attendees have the benefit of such a discussion.

Where was the smart toilet we really need? There was a lot of whimsical Twitter activity in my tweet-feed about an Amazon Alexa-enabled toilet at CES 2019. Kohler launched Numi 2.0, retail priced at $7,000 and pictured here. Descriptions tried to out-pun each other, e.g., “a fully-immersive experience,” “Game of Thrones,” and, “CES 2019 is flush with smart toilets.” Ian Bremmer, CEO of the Eurasia Group, commented, “A toilet is not something you want to be fully immersive.” MIT Technology Review rightly opined via tweet, “AI-embedded goods abound…anything that was perfectly fine without AI, you will most certainly find with it at #CES2019.” In addition to Kohler’s, I saw other smart toilets including the Toto Neorest NX2, and for your kitty cats, the Lavviebot. Other intelligent toilets have been developed by Matsushita, Panasonic, Toshiba, Lotus Hygiene, Coway, and others. I’ve been tracking the promise of this product concept for a while, along with my design-ful friend Stuart Karten of Karten Design. There is an important role for smart toilets in the homes of people managing chronic conditions where patient-generated bathroom data can be really useful. My friends who deal with Crohn’s and other gut issues, for example, track this information. People managing type 2 diabetes sometimes use urine strips to test blood sugar. I welcome the day when our smart toilets stop flushing away valuable personal data…and inform us for better self-care. We can and should expect commercially-scaled smart toilets soon with these clinical capabilities. MIT and the European Space Agency are working on the FitLoo right now. That’s my idea of a really smart toilet.

Who will buy at what price? It is encouraging to see the growing health and fitness supply side at CES populated with more products that have been FDA-cleared for serious clinical use. There are better designed products for consumers to gauge blood pressure and ECG, and to conduct ultrasound tests. Other FDA-cleared or -pending devices treat pain in the expanding category of digital therapeutics and other relief devices for sinus and neuro-muscular pain. There’s clearly consumer “need” to alleviate pain and prevent heart attacks. But then there’s the question of “demand” we economists ask. Demand is need filtered by a consumer’s willingness-to-pay for something. And when it comes to medical versus “wellness” or “fitness” products, it’s unclear just what consumers are willing to pay for. This is new-new territory, the consumer healthcare pricing game. I was intrigued to hear from Patrick Freuhler, CEO and Founder of Audicus, the OTC hearing aid innovator, that his company is considering a kind of subscription pricing plan that would charge the user a set cost on a monthly basis in lieu of the entire price up-front for the device. Consumers have surely warmed up to subscriptions, just like monthly mobile phone charges that appear on credit card statements. Value is in the eye of the beholder: we are in an era of health system value-based payment, and one for consumer health as well. For some context, the chart from a recent PwC survey found that if a consumer had to pay $100, 38% of people would buy and use a fitness band; but if an employer subsidized the cost, 63% would use it. While a fitness band isn’t a pain relief device or hearing aid, this scenario does give some indication of the complexity of people’s cost thresholds for wearable med-tech.

Where was UnitedHealthcare this year? For several years, I looked forward to speaking with representatives from UnitedHealthcare, which invested in a large booth presence at CES. This year, the company wasn’t here. But CVS+Aetna were here in a large, colorfully-branded booth featuring the iconic CVS heart and staffed by folks from both organizations. The companies attended CES celebrating their recent merger. So UHC was MIA at CES this year. Interestingly, a CVS+Aetna booth rep told me folks from UHC attending CES stopped by for a chat. So UHC was on the CES floor as attendees, not as exhibitor. Here’s a photo of the CVSHealth booth, which featured three value-based scenarios that the companies address with their combined assests: managing Type 2 diabetes, a knee replacement, and childbirth.

Last year, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai didn’t show up to CES 2018, reportedly because he had death threats related to his position on rejecting net neutrality. This year, Chairman Pai didn’t appear at CES, either, blaming this on the U.S. Federal government shutdown. Pai was scheduled, both years, to discuss Federal communications policy on a big stage with CTA President Gary Shapiro both years. And neither year did we CES attendees have the benefit of such a discussion.

Where was the smart toilet we really need? There was a lot of Twitter activity in my tweet-feed about an Amazon Alexa-enabled toilets at CES 2019. Kohler launched one called Numi 2.0, retail priced at $7,000 and pictured here. Descriptions waxed lyrically about it, such as a, “fully-immersive experience,” “Game of Thrones,” and, “CES 2019 is flush with smart toilets.” But as Ian Bremmer, CEO of the Eurasia Group, said, “A toilet is not something you want to be fully immersive.” MIT Technology Review rightly opined via tweet, “AI-embedded goods abound…anything that was perfectly fine without AI, you will most certainly find with it at #CES2019.” In addition to Kohler’s, I saw other smart toilets including the Toto Neorest NX2, and for your kitty cats, the Lavviebot. here are at least a dozen other vendors of intelligent toilets, many from Asia, via Matsushita, Panasonic, Toshiba, Lotus Hygiene, Coway, and others. In fact, I’ve been tracking this product concept for a while, along with my design-ful friend Stuart Karten of Karten Design. There is an important role for smart toilets in the homes of people managing chronic conditions where patient-generated bathroom data can be really useful. My friends who deal with Crohn’s and other gut issues, for example, track this kind of data. People managing type 2 diabetes sometimes use urine strips to test blood sugar. I welcome the day when our smart toilets stop flushing away valuable personal data…and inform us for better self-care. We can and should expect commercially-scaled smart toilets soon with these clinical capabilities. MIT and the European Space Agency are working on the FitLoo right now. That’s my idea of a really smart toilet.

Who will spend over $99 for an FDA-cleared medical device for home use? It is encouraging to see the growing health and fitness supply side at CES populated with more products that have been FDA-cleared for serious clinical use. There are better designed products for consumers to gauge blood pressure, ECG, and conduct ultrasound tests. Others FDA-cleared or -pending devices treat pain in the expanding category of digital therapeutics and other relief devices for sinus and neuro-muscular pain. But a question remains: there’s clearly consumer “need” to alleviate pain and prevent heart attacks. But then there’s the question of “demand” we economists ask. Demand is need filtered by a consumer’s willingness-to-pay for something. And when it comes to medical versus “wellness” or “fitness” products, it’s unclear just what consumers are willing to pay for. This is new-new territory, this consumer healthcare pricing game. I was intrigued to hear from Patrick Freuhler, CEO and Founder of Audicus, the OTC hearing aid innovator, that his company is considering a kind of subscription pricing plan that would charge the user a set cost on a monthly basis instead of charging the entire price for the device. Consumers have surely warmed up to subscriptions, just like monthly mobile phone charges that appear on credit card statements or get perennially debited from bank accounts. Value is in the eye of the beholder, and we have entered an era not just of health system value-based payment, but one for consumer health as well. For some context, the chart from a recent PwC survey found that if a consumer had to pay $100, 38% of people would buy and use a fitness band; but if an employer subsidized the cost, 63% would use it. While a fitness band isn’t a pain relief device or hearing aid, this does give some indication of the complexity of people’s cost thresholds for wearable tech.

This year, the company wasn’t here. But CVS+Aetna were here in a large, colorfully-branded booth featuring the iconic CVS heart and staffed by folks from both organizations including pharmacists. The companies attended CES marking their merged organization. So UHC was MIA at CES this year. Interestingly, a CVS+Aetna booth rep told me folks from UHC attending CES stopped by for a chat. So UHC was on the floor as CES attendees, not as exhibitor. The Caveats of CES 2019

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a “caveat” is, “a warning to consider something before doing anything more.”

It is fitting that CES is held in Las Vegas, land of high risk and, with a lot of luck, reward. With that theme in mind, I depart LAS airport tonight on an aptly-named red-eye flight back home, pondering not what I saw — some of which I covered daily over the past week — but what I didn’t see. Consider these the caveats of #CES2019. In no particular order…

Where was the Chairman of the FCC? Before last year’s CES, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had been working to eliminate net neutrality from United States communication policy. In June 2018, the FCC rolled back net neutrality, a policy that President Obama had put in place. Net neutrality is the requirement that Internet service providers (ISPs) treat all data the same regardless of its type, destination, or original source. Simply put, net neutrality is the concept that all data are created equal. Without net neutrality, ISPs can charge consumers different prices for different speeds of data traffic. I’ve asserted for many years that connectivity and broadband are a social determinant of health. Without online access, people can’t seek jobs, get educated, enroll in health insurance, socially connect with other people, and seek health information for self-care or diagnosed conditions on WebMD or “Dr. Google.” The lack of net neutrality on health care could further complicate and slow the adoption of telehealth, especially in rural and under-served areas. I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. I was stopped waiting to make a right turn. An emergency vehicle was coming in my direction from my left. Therefore, I was waiting for the emergency vehicle to pass. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. I have USAA and the other person has Geico. I just want to know exactly what to do in this situation. Since I'm out a car (I work for myself) I have been out (already) a decent amount of money for not being able to meet up with my clients.
