For ages, country stars avoided politics, aiming for a squishy ideological middle ground with no risk of offending anyone who might buy a record or a concert ticket. As Emily Nussbaum details in a New Yorker story published this week, though, acts in Nashville are increasingly sorting themselves into opposing camps: one more liberal (in both a political and musical sense), the other more conservative (ditto). As in America more broadly, this polarization seems due in some part to social media, which has empowered artists to speak more directly to their fans without fear of being misrepresented. But there’s also a business component: If you’re unlikely to connect with a mass mainstream audience — as with Kid Rock, who recently shot up a case of Bud Light to protest the beer’s association with the trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, or Aaron Lewis, the Staind frontman who’s gone on to a solo country career and who railed against woke-ism in 2021’s “Am I the Only One” — it makes sense to super-serve your base.

Have y’all heard of Staind before? If you bought some of their albums in a few years ago. If you were young, a teenager and in your twenties and you started listening to them. Aaron Lewis is a great lead singer and a solo singer and he has such a great voice. He and his wife Vanessa got married in 1999 and they both have three daughters: Zoe Jane, who was born in 2002, Nyra Rae, who was born in 2005 and Indie Shay, who was born in 2007. If you’re a fan of Staind, you can get tickets to go see them in concert.

Hello,
Winter, again. Not much daylight. I hope you all are safe and sound. A few things to tell you about this month: I’ve long been meaning to publish a corrected edition of Craigslistlieder, which I wrote 15 years ago. It was one of the first pieces of music I ever wrote down; as such, there were some basic things about music notation I didn’t fully grasp at the time. Life intervened, and it took, well, quite a while to correct, proof, etc. Rather than put it out on its own, I’ve decided to pair it with twelve of the highly silly Twitter songs (Twitterkreis) I started posting on social media back in 2018. So in this single volume, you’ll find all eight movements of Craigslistlieder, newly engraved, plus “God’s Perfect Killing Machines,” “Marie Kondo,” “Fleischlied für Mitt Romney,” and so much more. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who enjoys singing weird found text art songs, which, I assume, since you are reading this, means YOU. Snag your copy here.
I am so unbelievably excited about the Open Music concert with Missy Mazzoli on January 4th at Mississippi Studios in Portland. (For those of you just joining us, Open Music is a series that I run as part of my Creative Chair position with the Oregon Symphony.) Not only will Missy be in the house, we’ll have a special reading by Pulitzer-finalist Karen Russell, whose story “Proving Up” was the basis for Missy’s opera of the same name. There’ll be music by Tania León, Shelley Washington, J.S. Bach, Benjamin Britten, Missy Mazzoli, and the premiere of a new arrangement of a song that Missy wrote for me TEN YEARS AGO, which I’ll sing alongside a string quartet of Oregon Symphony musicians. Missy, in addition to being one of the most dynamic composers working today, is a fascinating and deeply intelligent human being. I’m thrilled & honored to get to spend a night in conversation with her and the music that moves her. Seating is extremely limited, so get tickets now!
Back in March of 2020, just as the world shut down, I was supposed to travel to Orlando, Milwaukee, and Detroit, in consecutive weeks to participate in performances of emergency shelter intake form. While Milwaukee and Detroit are still working to reschedule their performances, I’m thrilled that the Orlando Philharmonic will be performing the piece on January 8th. The brilliant Aaron Diehl will be playing the Gershwin Concerto in F on the first half. Tickets are here. A new feature of this newsletter! A few things that I’ve been listening to/reading that have moved me of late. Sound: Caroline Shaw/Sō Percussion - Let The Soil Play Its Simple Part Sam Sadigurksy - The Solomon Diaries Arooj Aftab - Vulture Prince Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Sings Newman
Text: Karen Fields & Barbara Fields - Racecraft Lewis Hyde - The Gift George Packer - Last Best Hope Emmanuel Carrère - Lives Other Than My Own In case you missed it, I released a new song last month. You can stream/download it here. (Free/name your price.) I can assure you that more music is on the way… Thank you as always for your support. I’m grateful to each and every one of you. Please follow me on bandcamp and/or sign up for my newsletter by sending an email to gabrielkahanelist at gmail dot com. (I'm trying to limit my engagement w/ surveillance capitalism, but very much want to be in touch with you!)
Best wishes,
Gabriel

Revival of Live Music at Northlands
For a frequent concert go-er, six months without live music was really killing me. The pandemic caused such a disruption to the music scene, that musicians and fans alike were looking for alternative options. At least half a dozen shows and a couple festivals that I had been eyeing were cancelled one by one. I remember weeks on end of scrolling on my phone reading more and more depressing or stressful posts and news stories. I was desperate for some real fun, but what could I do during the pandemic?
When all seemed lost in the surreal times of summer 2020, hope in the form of a drive-in concert got my attention. “A drive-in concert? That’s a cool idea. Like a drive-in movie!” So I bought a spot for one car to see a fun band Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. I got three buddies to come up with me to the Yarmouth drive-in theatre. We were pumped. We got into the show no problem. Each drive-in spot has a space to watch the concert next to the car. I was ready to dance for three hours straight. Standing in our slot with my friends, the band came on. The crowd voiced their enthusiasm with all kinds of yelling and excitement. This was exactly what I was missing… and then they began playing. My mouth dropped open. I just stared. From the stage I could barely hear anything at all. When I say this, I mean that I actually had to focus just to hear the vocals, and I struggled to make out anything he was singing. There was no amplification whatsoever. The drunk people yelling in the row behind us we’re louder than the band. I could not believe it. I asked a staff member why it was so quiet.
“It’s a drive-in concert. You tune in through your radio.”
“What?”
So let me get this straight... I paid $60, and drove nearly two hours just to listen to my car radio? Unbelievable. I learned my lesson from the Yarmouth drive-in. I was very skeptical of any shows after that. My frustration led me to warn my fellow concert go-ers about my experience with the Yarmouth drive-in, both online and directly to my friends. My good friend Reuben told me not to worry. “There's a new venue on the scene in New Hampshire. It's called Northlands.”
Northlands is an outdoor music venue located in Swanzey New Hampshire, and it was just a vacant lot at the start of 2020. On the Northlands website the first thing I read was: “Experience Live Music Again!” Thank goodness. Now, to be fair, the Yarmouth drive-in is meant for movies, not concerts. It is located off a main road with a neighborhood right next to it. Still terrible.
The Northlands venue was initially called “Drive-in Live,” and was more of a temporary solution than a permanent business venture. However, Drive-in Live rose in popularity quickly and was renamed Northlands. Northlands was built for concerts, and surprisingly quickly at that. Nestled in beautiful rural New Hampshire, this outdoor venue neighbors Mt Monadnock and multiple nature reserves. Without noise restrictions, and an outdoor venue, they were able to build a music venue specifically for Covid-19 safety guidelines.
The music scene had largely shut down entirely, with some scrambling to adapt to the pandemic. You can no longer buy tickets next to other random concert go-ers. Instead, you purchase pods meant for the group you arrive with. Most venues that have been carrying out drive-in concerts (with varying quality of concert experience) have ticket holders remain next to their cars in front of the stage. This is a big waste of space. At the Northlands you leave your car parked behind the stage, and walk to your pod. A pod is just a designated area for your group which is placed in a socially distant grid. A 10x10 rope border held up on poles marks your pod at the Northlands. Northlands started out small, but scaled up in order to meet the increasing demand. For many venues, this would often mean that everything gets more crowded. New pods would have poor visibility and worse sound quality. However, Northlands cares about its concert experience. After summer 2020 they brought in a larger stage, upgraded their sound system, added bigger stage screens/lights. Food trucks, a beer garden and a wine vendor have been added to the site recently, helping local businesses. When you arrive at Northlands you park by the road in one of four lots. Walking away from your car and the road, past the stage you see open sky and forest encompassing the green grassland that is the Northlands venue. It’s beautiful. You are welcome to bring: lawn chairs, cans, bottled water, blankets, umbrellas, tapestries, even hoola hoops if you want. The feeling of being heavily regulated can sometimes hinder a concert experience. Some places are known to be particularly stringent such as the House of Blues, which has been nicknamed “The House of Rules.” At Northlands however, there isn’t so much to worry about. You can walk around the site (with a mask), but you are not required to wear a mask while inside of your pod. Northlands has gone out of their way to make the venue as safe and stress free as possible. With extra hand washing stations and no-contact procedures with vendors, you don’t have anything to worry about.
Northlands has attracted some great acts. Musicians such as Marcus King, a prominent Rock and Blues musician, and Aaron Lewis who is a country star. This summer Northlands is hosting many big Northeastern bands such as Twiddle, The Machine, Goose, Pink Talking Fish, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and many more. I have heard nothing but raving reviews from concert go-ers, friends, and family. The online music community has lifted Northlands high, and spread the word fast. The concert season is beginning this May, and ticket prices range typically at an average of $30-$80 a person. Keep in mind tickets are sold in 5 person pods, with an option for a sixth slot extension. Tickets and all other information can be found on the Northlands website https://www.northlandslive.com. If you struggle to remember the last time you saw live entertainment, ask yourself: “what’s stopping me?” I myself intend to fill up my summer with as many shows as I can find the time (or money) for. Hopefully, I’ll see you there.

My mom just surprised me with concert tickets to go see Staind live for my birthday! The concert isn’t until July and my birthday is much sooner but oh my gosh, oh my gosh, I haven’t been to a concert in thirteen years.
I’m freaking out. Those tips I got have never been more helpful right now than ever.
Thank you so much, mom! I rocked hard when I found out but whenever I think about it I end up stimming! (no pun intended by the way)
I’ve been listening to these people since I was 5 and I’m going to be 27 in April. This is like a bucket list dream come true for me. I think I may cry.
Aaron Lewis (lead singer of Staind) does a cover of What Hurts The Most on his own but if he does it with the band. That’s it, I’m done, I will die right then and there because my life will be complete. I’ll have New Horizons, possibly my rats by then, my secret special interest, and if he does that song, I’ll go in peace right on the floor.

It’s the Wood Paneling That Makes Life Feel Normal

The Mountain East Conference women’s and men’s basketball tournaments were the tenants last week at Wesbanco Arena while the Capitol Theatre hosted the Wheeling Symphony’s “Simon & Garfunkel Story” Thursday, the Linsly Extravaganza on Friday night, and then a sold-out Aaron Lewis Saturday night. “SOLD OUT!!” are, by the way, the two most magical words in the entertainment industry. “Our staff did amazing and we had big crowds at the arena for a lot of the games, and each of those nights at the theatre were very crowded, too. The concessions revenue was record-setting,” said Kelly Tucker, the executive director of Wesbanco Arena and the Capitol Theatre who left a 30-year Live Nation career to return to her roots. “How do we get to the point where we’re that busy at both buildings every weekend? That’s what I want to find out.” Tucker was the general manager of the Jamboree in the Hills from 2005-18 before Live Nation ended the annual country music festival after 41 years and then was named the GM of The Pavillion at Star Lake in western Pennsylvania. Last summer alone, the Burgettstown amphitheater hosted more than 30 shows, including performances by Brad Paisley, Jimmy Buffett, Willie Nelson, Kid Rock, Jason Aldean, The Doobie Brothers, the Backstreet Boys, and The Lumineers. The ”name” bands on the schedule for Wesbanco Arena and the Capitol Theatre this spring and summer are Casting Crows on April 6, and REO Speedwagon on June 20. In addition, tickets are available now for Broadway shows, the Jamboree’s 90th-anniversary concert, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, a rock n’ roll doo-wop, and a comedy show in June. “When I was interviewed with the (Greater Wheeling Sports and Entertainment Board), I told the members that Wheeling is a B-market, and that’s something everyone needs to realize. The thing is this – we’re a strong B-market and that’s a great thing,” Tucker emphasized. “A B-market is one step lower than the big cities and that means we’re not going to have Harry Styles here in Wheeling because we don’t have that capacity. But B-markets can be very successful. “It’s all about working with the right promoters to find the best acts for this market. Once we get promoters to appreciate the Wheeling market because they have success here, then they will bring more events here,” she said. “But our venues are ‘rentals’ right now, and that means we wait for promoters to call us with their shows. One of my goals is to start bringing in our own shows and the City has taken a good step toward making that happen.” Wesbanco Arena was opened as the Wheeling Civic Center in the late 1970's. Deep in the Dungeon She can’t open a window to get some fresh air, and she can’t feel the sunshine without navigating concrete hallways in some sort of direction. That’s because Tucker’s office is tucked away beneath a portion of the west concourse of Wesbanco Arena. Her walls already are partially covered with photographs and mementos from her years in Belmont, Ohio, and featured in several of the pictures are the largest crowds anyone in the Upper Ohio Valley has ever seen let alone been in the middle of during those four glorious in July. Jamboree in the Hills will forever be the greatest outdoor event ever staged in Belmont County, but an announced “hiatus” become a permanent “gone for good” once Live Nation sold the 210 acres nearly two years ago. While the skeletons of what was remain on the property and can be seen from U.S. Route 40, the property has remained silent since July 22, 2018. “At least my office now has the wood paneling on the back wall,” Tucker said with a smirk. “I’ve worked in a lot of trailers in this business, at Jamboree and at Star Lake. It’s the wood paneling that makes life feel normal these days, but that’s about it. “The arena life is very new to me, but the city has performed a lot of upgrades to this facility that have made a terrific difference. Now, I still do believe this building has a ways to go to be completely up-to-date as far as what other facilities are now offering throughout the country,” she explained. “One example is the equipment in our concession stands. Some of it is original from when the building opened in the late 1970s.” Updates, however, have been performed on the Capitol Theatre since the Wheeling Convention & Visitors Bureau purchased the venue from Live Nation in April 2009. Bathrooms and an elevator were installed, a new concessions area was added, an ADA-compliant interior fire escape was installed. the Capitol Ballroom was renovated into event space, and all of the theatre’s seats have been replaced. “I have loved the theatre my entire life, and it’s where I got my start in this business, and that’s why I will always cherish the Capitol Theatre. There is so much history there, it’s incredible,” Tucker said. “I would put our theatre up against the theatres in Pittsburgh, and I’m not just saying. It’s because it’s so beautiful, and the acoustics are wonderful, and it’s OK to have different kinds of events there, too. “But right now, there’s not a lot of urgency to buy tickets to the events we have at the Capitol Theatre or here at the arena because people are used to there being enough most of the time. That’s something I want to change. The only way I do that is to keep bringing in great events so there’s the demand that causes the urgency,” Tucker said. “It’s not difficult to figure out. The difficult part is getting it done.” The Tucker family (Ryan, the late Kathy Tucker, Kelly, and sisters Shannon and Jan) has been involved in the area's entertainment industry for more than three decades. Just a Phone Call Away She was 11 years old in 1986 when Denny Magruder was named the general manager of the Wheeling Civic Center, and Tucker’s office had moved away from downtown Wheeling by the time he took over the management of the Capitol Theatre in 2009. Concerts, hockey, quarantine shelters, presidential visits, weddings, a staged-based circus, wrestling championships, religious celebrations, demolition derbies, bull riding, Broadway shows, chef auctions, basketball tournaments, home shows, banquets – you name it and Magruder managed it. “I have known Denny for a long time and thankfully these days I have him as a valuable resource because there’s no one who knows this building better. He’s a wonderful human who would do anything for anyone, and it’s a really one of the best parts of this job,” Tucker said. “Denny has always answered all of my questions and he’s given me his input, too, but at the same time, he’s always said to me, ‘I am never going to get in your way. “He tells me that this is my turn and it’s time for me to run the operation the way I believe is best, but he has assured me that he always will be there for me,” she said. “I believe we have a beautiful relationship and I am very thankful for him.” Tucker was assigned to the Star Lake Pavilion in Burgettstown for a little more than four years. Over the past decade, Magruder guided more than $20 million in major construction projects that propelled Wesbanco Arena into the future with significant exterior and interior upgrades that added a new lobby, video boards, a new scoreboard, seating, and new icing-making machinery. “This building, for a lot of years, was his life and he threw everything he had into it, so I really want everyone to know the last thing I would ever try to do is fill the shoes of Denny Magruder. I am not Denny. I won’t manage like Denny did. And I won’t go about things the way Denny did. But I doubt I could have more respect for Denny Magruder,” Tucker insisted. “He’s leaving a great legacy behind no doubt, and he’s done some really wonderful things for the city of Wheeling, that’s for sure. “There has been so much love thrown his way since his retirement announcement, and he deserves every bit of it,” she said. “I seriously doubt anyone could say a bad thing about Denny Magruder because he has always been such a wonderful person.” Her. Turn. Now, those two words are, by the way, the two most magical in Tucker’s life right now. “I wanted this position because I love Wheeling and always have, plus this kind of job had never been open here in Wheeling since Denny did such a great job for as long as he did,” Tucker said. “That’s why after Jamboree in the Hills, I had to go to the Pittsburgh market and Star Lake (Amphitheater) if I wanted to continue my career in this industry. When this position did come available, I believed it was a perfect fit for me. “I’m very happy to be working here at home again. And yes, I’m happy for the 10-minute commute, too,” she said with a smirk. “I’m happy to see my children more. Honestly, I’m blessed to have this opportunity and I can’t wait to see what we can do next. Our success last weekend is something I want to see every weekend, so let’s see if we can get there.” Read the full article

Udofia Named Aetna Fellow at Hartford Stage; “Sweeney Todd” cast at CT Rep; “Cyrano” Sets Sales Record at Goodspeed
Playwright Mfoniso Udofia will be in residence at Hartford Stage, Liz Larsen and Terrence Mann will head the cast of "Sweeney Todd" at CT Rep, and other theater news from Connecticut and elsewhere.
Mfoniso Udofia is the latest playwright who’s been named as an Aetna New Voices Fellow at Hartford Stage. The fellowship is a one-year residency for “important playwrights of diversity and color to develop work and become involved in the ongoing life of Greater Hartford.”
Earlier this year, Udofia was the mentor for Hartford Stage’s annual Write On playwriting competition for high school students. She is best known for her nine-part cycle of plays about the Ufot family of Nigeria immigrants, including “Sojourners” and “Her Portmanteau.” (The playwright herself is a first-generation American with Nigerian parents.) Udofia held a similar residency this past theater season at the Playwright’s Center in Minneapolis.
The previous Aetna New Voices Fellows have been Jorge Ignacio Cortinas, Luis Alfaro, Daniel Beaty, Quiara Alegriá Hudes, Hana Sharif, Will Power, Marcus Gardley, Matthew Lopez, Janine Nabers, Kimber Lee, Christina Anderson and Kaneza Schaal — quite an impressive group, working in a range of theatrical styles. Some of these fellows have had their works produced at Hartford Stage, including Beaty’s “Resurrection” and “Breath and Imagination,” Hudes’ “Water by the Spoonful” Lopez’s “The Whipping Man,” “Somewhere” and “Reverberation.”
The Scorecard
Swing your razor wide! Connecticut Repertory Theatre has announced the cast for “Sweeney Todd: A Musical Thriller in Concert,” which opens the theater’s Nutmeg Summer Series at the Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre on the UConn campus in Storrs, June 21 through July 1.
Nutmeg Series Artistic Director Terrence Mann, fresh from starring in “Jerry Springer The Opera” off Broadway, will play the title role of the demon barber of Fleet Street.
Liz Larsen, who has played Carole King’s mother Genie for four years in “Beautiful” on Broadway and was heard earlier this month in the Hartford Symphony Orchestra “Love on Broadway” concert, will be Nellie Lovett. Andréa Burns (Broadway’s “On Your Feet”) is Beggar Woman, Ed Dixon (the recent Broadway revivals of “Anything Goes” and “Sunday in the Park with George”) is Judge Turpin, Lu DeJesus is Beadle Bamford, Hugh Entrekin is Anthony Hope, Kenneth Galm is Tobias Ragg, Nicholas Gonzalez plays both Pirelli and Daniel O’Higgins and Emilie Kouatchou is Johanna Barker. The ensemble consists of Ryan Albinus, Alex Campbell, Cydney Clark, Olivia Fenton, Lauryn Hobbs, Kelley McCarty, Charlie Patterson, Gregory Rodriguez, and Brandon Wolfe. You’ll recognize the names of a few current or recent UConn acting students in there. Alex Campbell is a current UConn MFA acting student who played Rosalind in “As You Like It” last month.
Mann and Larsen were both in a previous CT Rep concert-style musical, “Les Miserables” in 2015. Nutmeg Summer Series details are at crt.uconn.edu.
“Cyrano” Sets Sales Record
“Cyrano,” the new musical based on Edmond Rostand’s late-19th century romantic swashbuckler “Cyrano de Bergerac,” set a new box office record at Goodspeed Musicals. Tickets went on sale to the general public May 21, and a Goodspeed spokesperson says “We sold the most in one day for any show in our 55 year history — nearly double the old record!”
“Cyrano” stars Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett, and features music by three members of the band The National: Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner and Matt Berninger. The musical is directed by Erica Schmidt, who also wrote its book.
“Cyrano” runs Aug. 3 through Sept. 2 at the Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, where the Goodspeed workshops new musicals. Sales are brisk, but apparently there are still tickets to be had. Details at 860-873-8668, goodspeed.org.
Back in Black
The Shubert in New Haven has added a couple of one-nighters to its fall schedule: “Sister’s Back to School Catechism: The Holy Ghost and Other Terrifying Tales” Oct. 13 and comedian Lewis Black’s “The Joke’s on US” tour Nov. 11.
“Back to School” is part of the “Late Nite Catechism” series of comic lectures by a stern nun. New Haven’s Long Wharf Theatre has hosted many editions of the series, but not this one.
Black, the venerable TV comedy-news monologist, is also a prolific playwright who studied at the Yale School of Drama and has had many of his works staged at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. He’s brought his one-man comedy concerts to Connecticut many times.
Details at 203-562-5666, shubert.com.
Ramping Up in Ridgefield
Summer and fall attractions at the Ridgefield Playhouse include an outdoor 90-minute Shakespeare on the Green production of “Hamlet” July 22 and a slew of concerts by Broadway theater stars: Cynthia Erivo Sept. 16, Ed Asner in Ed Weinberger’s one-man play “A Man and His Prostate” Sept. 30, Tony Danza’s solo act “Standards & Stories” Oct. 27, Bebe Neuwirth’s “Stories and Song with Piano” Nov. 10 and Ben Vereen in “Steppin’ Out for the Holidays” Dec. 2. There are also two vocal quartet shows tailor-made for “Jersey Boys” fans: “Under the Streetlamp,” which features former members of the Four Seasons musical’s Broadway cast, Oct. 5, and “The Jersey Tenors,” a pop-operatic thing, Sept. 22.
The playhouse also screens the National Theatre Live series and other filmed-theater events. Next up are “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” June 15, “Bandstand: The Broadway Musical on Screen” June 25.
Obie CT
The Obie Awards, for distinguished work off Broadway, were presented May 21 in New York. Among the many honorees was Amy Herzog’s drama “Mary Jane,” which premiered at Yale Rep last year before moving to Broadway with the same director (Anne Kauffman) but a different cast. “Mary Jane” earned awards for Herzog, Kauffman and its New York star Carrie Coon.
Composer Stephen Trask, who grew up in New London and went to Wesleyan University, performed the song “Wig in a Box” to mark the 20th anniversary of the original off Broadway production of the musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Trask was living in New Haven at the time of “Hedwig”’s initial success.
In Case You’ve Forgotten…
The Steve Martin and Martin Short special “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” debuted May 25 on Netflix. The theater concert played The Bushnell in February, a few months after the special was filmed at an earlier tour stop in Greenville, S.C. Watch it for Short’s nudie rock musical parody “Step-Brother to Jesus.”

DOUG AND I ARE GOING TO SEE AARON LEWIS THE LEAD SINGER FROM STAIND LITERALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS EVER! I love having someone to experience life with again. Literally being single the last couple years I’ve just gone to work, the gym by myself, and gone home and drank alone. I would’ve never bought a ticket to a concert on my own. But now that I have someone to experience things with it wasn’t a “waste of money” to buy the tickets. So I bought two tickets for Doug and I to go see him June 5th. He’s really excited too. We first bonded over music and sent each other lots of blue october, Staind, evanescence, etc songs. Staind is one of both of our favorite bands.
And I literally haven’t been to a concert in at least 10 years. I’ve only ever been to two and both were artists I didn’t really care for but my friends took me in high school.
