When I was a kid, I was often frustrated and something else - some other feeling I couldn’t quite name - due to a specific expectation in school: don’t be absent.
I was what folks called a “sick child” so I easily caught every cold that anyone else had and then it turned 10-20x worse due to my limited immune health and chronic asthma issues. I never got the award for no absences. I never had perfect attendance. And it was never my fault… but I was treated like it was a choice, as if I wouldn’t have been healthy if I could’ve been.
I was almost held back in 5th grade due to missing 16 and a half days of school… that was a record low number of absences for me. And I was nearly punished because I was a ‘sick child.’ Fortunately, the parent-teacher-whoever meeting to discuss me being held back (or not) went in my favor and I moved forward to 6th grade.
Recently, I think I found the words. I was being held to Ableist standards, when I was not Abled in that way. And I felt helpless.
It just hit me recently how that was (is?) an Ableist standard. I get why it’s there, why education is important and how tracking absences highlights truancy patterns which often leads to discovery of neglectful or abusive homes … and therein lies another issue, how families who are dysfunctional are more often punished than assisted BUT I digress…
It’s just Kinda Super Messed Up…Holding someone to a standard they cannot reach, and not for lack of trying, especially at such an early age.
Just some 2am thoughts pouring out ✌️

"Industrial Workers Laying Off In Order to Get Beer Supplies," Kingston Whig-Standard. December 2, 1943. Page 3. --- Dwindling supplies of Government regulated beer and longer queues are making inroads into man-hours important to Canada's war effort, local war industries report.
Thirsty citizens employed in war industries in the Kingston district, report waiting in line for the better part of Saturday morning to get beer only to have the "sold out" sign confront them within sight of their goal.
Managements of war industries admitted the present system of distribution was resulting in a large number of war workers laying off work to try and get their supply of beer.
One industry stated from 50 to 100 war workers did not report for work last Saturday and Monday it was even worse. "The whole thing gives me a headache," said one official.
Another industry reported it had an average of about six out of every 100 employees absent daily. This official would not state that all were staying away so as to be able to get their beer. It was intimated some of the absentees were away on account of illness. Another official said it appeared as though one had to join the absentee list to get beer.
A representative of one of the smaller industries said that in his opinion there was a tendency on the part of some employees to lay off work so that they could buy their weekly supply of beer.
One manager said the situation was not serious in his plant, in fact he did not know if any of the employees had taken a holiday to buy beer.
Another industry representative said it was apparent to him many workmen who were needed in the war effort were laying off work. Whether it be to get beer he was not in a position to state. He said the day following pay day was the worst.
Some heads of industries were of the opinion some changes should be made in the beer rationing regulations. It was stated there should be enough beer to supply the citizens, without forcing them to wait for long hours on the street only to be confronted with the sign "sold out," early in the day.

How To Deal With Absenteeism
Handling and reducing absenteeism can be made a very simple process with a well-structured leave policy effective within the company along with attendance management tools.
Such policies should entail the number of total leaves, which is categorized into paid leaves, unpaid leaves, who should be contacted for the leaves, and how much time prior.
Making and implementing such policies and making uncompromising adherence to them can reduce absenteeism. There are many other remedies through which absenteeism can be reduced such as;

Department Proposals in 2025
At the 20 March 2025 meeting of the Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council, the Department introduced another round of extensive, substantive proposed changes to unemployment law. Note: Despite many of these proposals being repeats from prior proposals, the Department did not include any financial estimates with these current proposals. At the April 17th Council meeting, however, the Department…

I keep hearing about pandemic related staffing shortages.
Workplaces, including government workplaces, are having chronic staffing problems because of people being out sick with covid, or with covid complications. It's hard to understand why testing and masking and vaccination was considered unsustainable, but these chronic staffing shortages are considered sustainable. They’re not. Either the government needs to do something to require covid mitigation OR needs to at least require employers, including government employers, to hire more staff to cover the inevitable pandemic-related absences. Something's gotta give here because the workplace situations are not getting better.
Unionizing is a good idea. Just sayin.
There’s reason to think that employers are not hiring when they ought to be and know they ought to be. Companies are posting “ghost jobs” to make the people being overworked believe help will be coming. I’ve been hearing about this for a couple of years now. The employers admitted it to a ResumeBuilder.com employer survey.
Ghost Jobs Are Haunting the Labor Market  AUG 1, 2024 Ghost Jobs Are Haunting the Labor Market Big Take - Bloomberg  Stacie Haller: “So what they told us was, many of them are posting jobs so their own employees feel like oh we’re hiring more and you won’t have to work so hard. The workers are coming into the rescue. Or, they’re telling us they want you to believe the company is growing and expanding, when it’s not.”
Hiring managers are reported to be happy to have some power back in the job market, and are pleased with the results of their fake job postings, so they’re probably not going away.

Map: School Absences and WIC Enrollment 2016
I’ve been digging through my archives and came across a set of maps I made while working for the Detroit Health Department (DHD). It seems a good time to share now that DPSCD is launching health hubs with funding support from the Pistons. School absenteeism is a widespread and known issue among the Detroit school age population. The factors and causes are numerous and variable, but broadly…

I have nothing to give the day. And although it's early, I know the situation isn't going to improve. I'm told that, once I'm up and out, I'll be ok. I'm unconvinced.

Athena when debating the gods whether or not Odysseus should be freed from Ogygia: intellectual and level headed as she appeals to their hearts 🤓🥺😞
Also Athena when Ares says anything remotely insulting about Telemachus: bro shut the f@ck up and leave that little guy alone! 🤬💢
