Hey, remember how OC-tober is supposed to be a daily challenge? Yeah, my work schedule wasn't a fan of that idea. Oh well, we're still getting them all done within the month. Prompt #12, Your OC seeing their younger selves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y'know, this was supposed to be a low effort drawing. That's probably why these all take me more than 1 day (jk it's actually my short attention span). Anyway, here's Zachary seeing himself before he turned into a lich via magic bullshit so that everything could have a seasonally appropriate spooky green tinge.
And yeah, I know I'm doing Zachary for a lot of these, but can ya blame me? He's literally got at least 1,000 years more life experience than everybody else, he's EASY to do drawing prompts with.
Anyway, Zachary has long since come to terms with his fate, but he remembers every single person he helps, and has especially fond and painful memories from his village during his original lifespan. He hopes that one day the magic that keeps him immortal will fail and he'll be reunited with the many souls he cares for.

There are two what we might call logistical questions that bedevil readers/adaptors of A Christmas Carol: "What, precisely, is Tim Cratchitt ill with?" and "What does the firm of Scrooge and Marley actually do?"
The first is a reliable topic around which a pop-medical journal or doc-with-a-blog can spin a thinkpiece every December, but when it comes to adaptations, it doesn't really matter: Diagnostic science was in a pretty poor state even at the top of the line in 1843, and the Cratchitts certainly can't afford that top of the line anyway, so as far as anyone around him knows, what Tim has is Tragic Dickensian Child Syndrome.
But the second question is something that people in-universe would presumably know, and if you want to deviate from the book's dialogue even slightly, there's only so much fancy footwork you can do to avoid making it clear, and this has resulted in many adaptations throwing up their hands and staking out an answer, but not much of a clear consensus. Is Scrooge a moneylender? A landlord? A stockbroker? A commodities trader? All of them at once?
I doubt that my reading of the original text will be the one that finally cracks either of these questions, but I'm sure I'll be turning them both over in my head all the same.

tged webtoon ep 168 spoilers and thoughts that IM NOT LATE WITH FOR ONCE! KIND OF! YAY! and more below the cut
.
.
.
OKAY. OKAY CAN WE TALK ABOUT THESE TWO PANELS WITH LLOYD AND JAVIER REALLY REALLY QUICK. i would save this for the end of the post since its closer to the end but im super impatient okay what else can i say. LOOK AT THE WAY JAVIER IS LOOKING AT HIM
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HE IS LOOKING AT HIM SO DAMN FONDLY. WHAT THE FUCK. THERE IS WARMTH IN THAT GAZE I SWEAR TO GOD IM NOT CRAZY. "you're such a terrible person" AND HES LOOKING AT HIM LIKE THAT. WHAT. WHAT. WHAT. crazy. CRAZY.
the adaptor knew what they were doing . i swear it . like "yeah thats MY evil boyf. he's back to being evil and lively and his perfect bastard self." I SWEAR IT I SWEAR IM NOT CRAZY
this is proof of llovier. im so serious dont even joke lads
back to the top!
not much to say here lloyds expression is just so real sobs yeah . yeah,,, older gens having goofy ass back and forths over things that really arent the main issue here is universal
Tumblr media
like i dont quite remember what season theyre in now but its past winter by this point and based on the two panels showing the time of day they had to have been arguing about this for AT LEAST FOUR HOURS 😭 LIKE WHAT THE FUCK (idk how accurate that estimate is im notoriously bad at time but still. a long fucking time) these BUFFOONS
also lloyd being dramatic as hell is so fucking silly HAHAHAHAHHAA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THEN THE LORDS FUCKING STARING AT HIM WHEN HE BRINGS UP THAT HE HAS AN IDEA. HELPPP all eyes on lloyd now !!! what brilliant idea do u have next thats absolutely totally not secured through lowkey social engineering!

also lloyd just knowing exactly how to talk to those old ass political lords and understanding how to string them along idk what it is but i really really like that, it makes sense to me personally
Tumblr media
i figure that thats probably something suho just Had to pay attention to back in korea, idk how korean politics works exactly but i imagine the principle of "person in charge can make or break a lot of things" still stands
so like it'd make sense that he pays attention to whoevers in charge of the finance stuff, which political figures care about money, and where that money goes, bc if they fuck with the funds for education thatll directly screw him over. idk if korea has financial aid but whatever equivalent that is that allows suho to get scholarships n stuff so he can stay afloat, if someone comes into power that will negatively affect his odds of getting that funding, he'll need to know and prepare! though maybe this is reaching a little too deep it might not be That Serious lmfao
again i really like how many of these confident / plotting expressions have been showing up IM SOO SO SO HAPPYYYY my schemer my little scheming guy he's BACK HES BACK
Tumblr media
the two of them also look really really nice here in these two panels for some reason. i think im going crazy. i dont know why i like these panels its just. !??!?!?!?!??! like javiers hair is completely messy but idk i just ?!?!?!?!? im completely aro so its not like an attraction or anything but idk!?!??!?!?!

Tumblr media
okay that's all! not much to say this episode is just really really cozy to me. ok well as cozy as "lloyd frontera making evil expressions" can get LMFAO it feels like build up into the next section and im really excited to see what he's gonna do with this train idea and with the overworld demons...!!!!!
there was a notice at the end of the ep that the artist is taking a small break for their health so no ep next week, but there'll be one the week after i believe. we must be patient!!! rest well artist!!!!
that's it ill see yall in. two weeks? ill probably have some other yap post for the hiatus week idk, it depends on how my schoolwork goes. see yall then!!!!

I have so much to comment on chapter 40 but I'll try to be brief
19th century misogyny says the wife spreading information a bad thing. What if he had attacked someone else while she kept her mouth shut? God forbid she takes action that can bring results without asking permission from men.
Under such circumstances, ignorant people always do what they have heard has been done by some one else before them and in an incredibly short space of time the propriety of catching Sir Francis Varney
If this was a story where he was just a home invading criminal then all of those ramblings would have made sense. However, as you said this is a literal vampire, why are you mocking them, they are literally right. This is not Hotel Transylvania. If the narrator made no statements, I would have taken the Bannerworth disgust towards the mob as them being classist. While they do want to permanently stop him if he won't listen, they have code of honor, for the opponent to fall in fair fight, now that they know him. So a gentleman pistol duel is in this case way more civilized than the barbaric, foreign stake method.
If you think about it the Crew of Light is a small mob, storming places, prawling and not interested in fair fights. Which,
It is fascinating to me how the mob are othered in a way Varney, the literal monster, never is. Varney is humanized throughout the text, even while he is biting people and committing crimes
...reminds me how several retellings do exactly this with Dracula. But yes the mob's crime is they are being bloodthirsty and violent while poor.
Rymer seems to have a serious problem accepting the conceits of his own story. In several places, during a scene which might otherwise be quite good horror, the narration undercuts the tension by commenting derisively on how stupid the character is for being afraid. And of course, he never quite wraps his head around the idea that believing in vampires is sensible in a universe where vampires are real. It all wraps back into his classism and contempt for his audience, of course--he is much too concerned with sneering at hypothetical superstitious poor people in this universe to consider that, in the universe of his story, they really aren't being superstitious at all.
The comparison to Dracula is interesting. There is definitely some classism in the way Dracula adaptors tend to treat characters such as the Romanian peasants, compared to how Stoker portrayed them (always a massive L when your politics come off worse than a 19th century white guy), but I think the humanization of Varney and Dracula come from different impulses. Honestly, I don't think Rymer could write a compellingly inhuman villain. Varney is human because it doesn't occur to Rymer to write him another way, and he's sympathetic because it sold periodicals like hotcakes. I don't think Rymer particularly identifies with or even likes Varney; not that he dislikes him per se, but he never views him as anything more than a vehicle for telling stories. Adaptors of Dracula, on the other hand, tend to project onto Dracula as a power fantasy. He is not only sympathetic, but powerful, suave, and capable of seducing and/or domineering any woman he wants. In both cases, human characters in opposition to the vampire character are portrayed monstrously with the goal of making the vampire more sympathetic, but Dracula adaptors are (I hope) not trying to make a sweeping statement about how evil and stupid poor people are.
Or, to sum up, Dracula adaptors make the mob a villain because they want you to see how cool and likeable Dracula is; Rymer makes Varney sympathetic because he wants you to see how bad and terrible the mob is.

Disney: The Great Adaptor
And it's fall into Remake hell
While watching lvl 1 rock's video on Treasure Planet (great analysis. Highly recommend) I realized something. Disney was never original. They were a studio of adaptations, and they ruled at it.
youtube
Think about the classics: Snow White, Jungle Book, Cinderella, Robin Hood, Bambi, ect. And think on your renaissance favorites: Mulan, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Hunchback of Notredam, Treasure Planet, ect. All of these are adaptations of well known books or legends. And they were superb, they were breathtaking, they were staples in our childhood that we never forget. They are masterpieces that we still show children to this day. And each generation that discovers them falls in love just as we did.
And think about now. Think about the heaps of remakes we have been getting. Think of the dull coloring, rushed lines, strange and awkward story modifications, abandoned key moments and core characteristics. How is it that a studio with a legacy of taking well known stories and adapting them into new mediums is failing so hard?
There is a lot of different answers, but two that I find potent are adaptation vs remake and passion.
Adaptation vs. Remake:
The Disney movies we love are not remakes of old stories: they are adaptations. Stories like Cinderella and Tarzan take inspiration from their source through characters, story beats, and main themes- but they do not recreate scene for scenes and word for words. Both Cinderella and the original legend are romance romanticized in gentle and magical ways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both are about enduring long adversity while keeping true to yourself. And yet the 1950 film chooses to chose to make the animal companions role in her story more prominent for levity, Cinderella's focus on cherishing and holding onto her dreams for deeper characterization, and wisely take out the toe and heal cutting of the sisters as well as their guesome punishments.
Look at all their classics and golden age films compared to their source material and you'll see how the films are more about taking inspiration while these remakes feel more like cheap copies. One is a hundred artists' love letter to their muse. The other is a stressed college students plagiarizing another students essay the night before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at all the impact, beauty, emotion, and color that is just lost! One adapts, the other remakes.
Passion:
When listening to lvl 1 rock's break down of the beauty of treasure planet, I realized a lot of the changes made between book and film had to do with what the artists, writers, and directors were passionate about. The director loved scifi and so the story was set in a creative and fantastical cyberpunk alienesc universe. This didn't just effect the background or setting but enhanced the characters, props, and story points in new ways. The clue treasure map becomes a puzzle box with 3-D interactive imagery that nobody else knew how to unlock (making Jim out resident rubic cube master) Long John Silver goes from a wooden peg leg to a cybotronic prosthetics that provide awesome weapons (the best marriage of 2-D and 3-D in animation to date I might add)
Tumblr media
TP Jim being a troubled teen with father abandonment issues is very different from straight arrow, honest, 12 year old book Jim, a change that becomes one of the main themes and reason so many people charish this film. The writers didn't just pull this out of their hat to 'appeal to a different audience'. They did it because it was an emotional point that they themselves could relate to and thus they portrayed Jim and John Silver's relationship in a way that impacts thousands.
And remember that opening scene? With the solar board, mid air flips, dangerous paths, and law breaking stunts? One of the best openings that absolutely thrills audiences, cements Jim as the coolest kid ever, while showing (not telling) us just what a desperate, passionate, thrill seeker this kid is?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can thank animator John Ripa and others for being X Game fans.
So many Disney movies that we loved growing up were driven by artists and writers who brought what they were passionate or emotional about into their adaptations, and that was what helped make them so unique and interesting for years to come.
People loved the original stories, and they were able to love the Disney versions still because of the respect and care for the source material and the passions that led the changes they made.

I think the best part about being an Eddsworld fan is that the cast has that "Universal Adaptor Cast"-quality where you can basically insert them into almost any plot or story and just have it work.
In fact I think AU's (and headcanons) are over half of the lifeblood of content within the fandom. Kinda like how FNF mods are mostly the reason that the game hasn't completely died out content-wise.
...I say this as someone with over 30 AUs under my belt XD

Alright time for a guide I call:
So you want to get into House of Cards.
My stupid little help guide for people who find it interesting and might want to watch it for themselves - from someone who has this franchise as a special interest.
JUST DON’T GET INTO IT.
Okay no seriously if you like drama shows this is definitely going to absorb you. I’m sorry about that.
Alright on a genuine note, this list will be separated into different categories - the British version, the American version, and things universal to both.
The British Version
For the love of all that is holy, you need to read the books. This isn’t some weird superiority “oh I’ve read the book and you haven’t so I’m a better fan” thing. The problem is that the British TV adaptation of House of Cards made heavy changes to characterisation. For the most part, this doesn’t matter, but in the case of HoC IT DOES. Andrew Davies, the TV adaptor, made heavy changes to the original intentions of the author Michael Dobbs. Most notably, he was the one who created the affair between Francis Urquhart and Mattie Storin. However, if you read the original unrevised novels, you will quickly learn that this affair was created for the adaptation simply because Davies thought that sex should be a staple of drama. When Dobbs rewrote the books to be more aligned with the show, he included the affair… but he crucially made it so there was a focus on the psychological aspect of it, and he also made it so Urquhart just didn’t care about her post the events of the first book. He also specified in To Play The King that he was sexually insecure, in stark contrast to the show. There are other examples, such as Tim Stamper’s sexuality and the handling of Geoffrey Booza-Pitt’s entire personality, but I hope this just demonstrates how Davies isn’t a reliable adaptor, and how he ruins characters.
Most characters only stick around for one season, so don’t get attached to side characters unless you’re a fan of exploring characters! If you do get attached to a side character, you’re most likely to get more information on them from the books, and some characters do appear in more than one book while they only appear in one series. E.G. Benjamin Landless appears in HOC and TPTK in the books but in the show he only appears in HOC. Bryan Brynford-Jones appears in TPTK and TFC but in the show he only appears in TPTK.
Unlike its American counterpart, UK HOC is much more plot driven, meaning there is no filler and at times it’s harder to feel for characters. But it’s also a quick watch, only lasting a total of twelve hours.
A lot of House of Cards comes from anti-Thatcher statement, and even though the story comes from a Conservative it is at times critical of the hard right. Good for being left wing. The character of Francis Urquhart was literally based on Dobbs being berated by Thatcher. I’m going to put something similar in the American section, but a bit different.
Unlike the US version, there are no specials.
The American Version
This is the controversial version. For obvious reasons - namely the fact the lead actor for five out of six actors is one Mr Kevin Spacey. If you can separate actor from the art and also accept that Netflix cut ties with him, you’re fine, go ahead. If you have problems with that, you’re better off watching the British version.
Unlike the UK version, this is a lot more character driven. You will learn things about the main characters and the recurring cast, and you will probably get attached to them. Also unlike the UK version, the show does not hide its queer characters. While US HoC is not inherently queerbaiting, the Bury Your Gays trope occurs a lot.
This show was plagued by bad writing choices, especially in its latter half. Most people tend to only watch two seasons, though you choose when to stop. I’d recommend you leave Season 6 alone though.
Like the UK version, there is anti-conservative statement in here. Later seasons are critical of Trump and Frank’s nature as a conservative Democrat are called out on several times. He is not painted as entirely reasonable, and later seasons make him a dictator-aligned politician.
Unlike the UK version and its weird writing of abuse especially in the TV adaptation as opposed to the implications in the books, the US version is a bit more open. Rape is a huge subplot in Season 2, handled very well if I may say so. However there are times where abuse is treated as nonexistent, especially one certain scene in the early episodes of Season 3. At times it’s stellar writing of abuse for its time period, at times it’s downright harmful. Some characters also have abuse as part of their backstories, especially for our protagonists Frank and Claire.
Unlike the UK version, there are specials! Namely the promo videos Netflix put out for the show, but there was also a special created for the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. It’s called Welcome to Nerd Prom and it’s pretty neat, including cameos from politicians and media personnel of the time. It’s basically the vibe of the US version just made silly. Here you go.
There are other specials but… we don’t talk about them.
Universal
A lot of House of Cards has the undertone of classism - though for the British version this is more persistent in the novels. Both tackle this theme from opposite lenses - the British version is about the son of an Earl reclaiming “his rightful place”, the American version is about a man from poverty wanting recognition by taking power.

Can I lodge a request to the universe for no more computer trouble for at least a year, please?
Just had the most terrifying experience of turning my laptop on and finding that it couldn't connect to anything. The help page was telling me to connect an ethernet cable, but there's no port. I dug into the internet settings and that said it didn't have a wireless adaptor, which I knew it did. Eventually found my way to some random Intel forum where some rando said 'turn it off, take it off charge, then hold down the power button for thirty seconds'. And somehow that. worked??? Terrifying.

IBO reference notes on . . . spacesuits
For reasons that may or may not be related to fanfic, I decided to do a quick survey of the difference spacesuits -- or 'normal suits', in Gundam parlance -- that appear throughout Iron-Blooded Orphans. There's not really much to conclude from this, but it snagged me a set of reference screenshots that I think worth collating for your viewing pleasure.
The most commonly used normal suit first appears during the battle between Tekkadan and the Turbines, where Atra helps Kudelia out with putting one on, in a scene that provides some gratuitous shots of the girls changing. It's not especially tasteless, in the grand scheme of things, but it's one of those genre trappings that didn't really need to be there. Still, it provides a good demonstration of how the suits fit together, where the zippers and fastenings are, and so on. Plus the hilarious visual of the helmets being repurposed as potato buckets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This normal suit is clearly a standard type, that turns up in multiple civilian and non-official military settings. Most immediately, we see that the Turbines use it, the orange swapped for a fetching maroon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Generally speaking, the colour-blocking is the only thing to change between uses. Here are a couple more shots showing the Tekkadan and Turbines versions, including a close-up on the boots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beyond these two types, the most usual variant is a black and grey version that appears in various scenarios, including in the flashbacks to Akihiro's family, the Dort colonies, and the archaeologists in Urdr Hunt.

Curiously, Katya also wears this towards the end of Urdr Hunt -- where she must have been given it by Gjallarhorn. So can we take the black, grey and white to be a sort of universal default?
Other colour variants are worn by young!Amida and by Range (under his poncho) in Urdr Hunt, and by the various groups of mercenaries and space-pirates in Season 2.

Speaking of pirates, the ones who attacked Akihiro's family have added a jetpack for easy manoeuvring in zero-g. It's notable that this isn't something we see more generally: Mikazuki has to rely on a hand-held thruster in the Dorts. This, however, harkens back more to the original Gundam series in terms of moving around in space.

Moving on to the second major 'civilian' normal suit, the human debris all wear a slightly simpler, slightly more badly-fitted white version striped in red. We first see this with the Brewers and later with human debris used by the JPT Trust (not shown because it's mainly seen in fairly bloody scenes).

A palette-swap of this is used by 598 and his crew in Urdr Hunt, which I bring up as an excuse to post the bisexual-energy screenshot.

Due to image limits, I won't cover Tekkadan's pilot suit in this post. If you've seen the show, you'll have seen a lot of that, and of Gjallarhorn's equivalent. What I find interesting about the human debris normal suit is that it is clearly more closely related to the general-purpose version than what Shino is wearing here, which is a specialised for an Alaya-Vijnana-user in a military setting.
This of course makes sense given that everything about the human debris is meant to invoke cheapness. Rather than a custom-made battle suit, they just get a standard one-size-fits-nobody get-up with an A-V adaptor stuck on the back. It's a nice visual touch, that also helps emphasise the sense of human debris as little kids forced into situations they shouldn't be in. That being said, the *helmet* is distinctly made for a mobile suit pilot, being something close to what Gjallarhorn soldiers wear.
Tekkadan does use another distinct normal suit variant, with added armour, that shows up for the battle with the Brewers and never again. Or, well, I am not actually sure if this is meant to be a normal suit or more akin to the combat armour we see Gjallarhorn infantry wearing, or if that is a distinction without a difference. Since they are both deployed in space-based operations, we can probably assume they're at least potentially interchangeable with normal suits.

These do notably lack the backpack of the standard normal suit. which I take to be where the life-support gubbins goes. However that goes for the pilot suit as well (it only has the A-V adaptor block; I assume everything else is distributed at the waist and collar) and we see it functioning fine for spacewalks. So I'm grouping this in here as well.
As I said up the top of the post, there's not a whole lot to take away from this, beyond the different ways the same asset is reused throughout the series. It's a neat enough design, although the pilot suits are far more striking. I do like the pirates' jetpack; wish we'd seen more of that (that's actually what I was looking up when I started collecting these).
Overall, I quite like the commonality of design, the sense that someone somewhere is just mass producing these things as a standard piece of kit. That's kind of what you'd need, in a space-faring society, to make these widely available to as many people as possible, just as a matter of basic practicality. Then you'd have different groups that could afford it customising to fit their organisations.
Huh. That must mean the human debris normal suits are also mass produced, if there's a standard-issue version of those.
There we go again with another demonstration of the base-level exploitative awfulness built into this setting.
