Hierarchical laser structuring of polymer surfaces involves the use of laser techniques to simultaneously create micro- and nanostructures on polymer films. In this approach, a UV laser is directed through a patterned mask—such as a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grid—onto the polymer surface. The laser induces periodic nanostructures known as LIPSS (Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures) through interference effects, while the mask generates microscale patterns via Fresnel diffraction. The result is a single-step fabrication of complex surface topographies that combine features at multiple length scales. These hierarchical structures significantly influence surface properties such as wettability, adhesion, and mechanical response, making the technique highly valuable for applications in biomedicine, nanophotonics, and flexible electronics.
