Urban Greenery and Perceived Noise

This study investigates how urban greenery influences noise perception across different geographic contexts, addressing inconsistent findings in previous research. By integrating real-time environmental sensing with ecological momentary assessments (EMA), we collected data on sound exposure, greenery levels, and subjective noise perception from 800 participants in Hong Kong. Restorative and masking effects dominate in some settings, while audio-visual incongruence may heighten annoyance in others. Drawing on a one-year field study involving 39 stakeholders from industry and research, the study applies Constructive Grounded Theory and abductive reasoning to uncover the evolving tensions in cobot deployment. Rather than viewing the path to collaboration as linear or resolved through technological solutions alone, the research employs Paradox Theory to understand the contradictory demands—such as efficiency vs. worker wellbeing, automation vs. human agency, and innovation vs. stability—that persist over time.

AI-Driven Cell-Penetrating Peptide Prediction

This study presents CPPpred-En, a powerful ensemble-based model for predicting cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) by integrating conventional peptide descriptors and protein language model (PLM) embeddings. By evaluating 69 handcrafted features and 8 PLM-derived embeddings across multiple machine learning classifiers, the model selects top-performing combinations and fuses them using ensemble learning. Trained and validated on benchmark datasets (CPP924 and MLCPP 2.0), CPPpred-En significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art predictors, demonstrating high accuracy, robustness, and generalisability. This hybrid approach leverages the interpretability of conventional features and the contextual richness of PLMs, offering a scalable and accurate solution for CPP identification in peptide-based drug delivery and therapeutics.

Core-Shell Polymers for Sensing

This study focuses on the development of smart, environmentally friendly sorbent materials for the selective detection of S-metolachlor, a common herbicide found in contaminated water. Using core-shell molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) synthesized on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) particles, researchers created highly selective and reusable materials capable of recognizing and binding S-metolachlor from both model solutions and real water samples. These smart polymers incorporate thermosensitive properties, improving their efficiency and responsiveness. The sorption behavior followed the Freundlich isotherm model, and kinetic studies confirmed a pseudo-second-order reaction pathway. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in selectivity and adsorption capacity compared to traditional methods, supporting the application of MIPs as effective tools for solid-phase extraction (SPE) in environmental monitoring and analysis.
