Published today (28/01/2025) my English translation of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's The Future's Eve, published by Soyos Books.

Villiers de L’Isle-Adam’s The Future’s Eve (L’Éve Future, 1886) is a visionary interrogation of technology, humanity, and ideal love. When Lord Ewald asks his friend (a fictionized Thomas Edison) to replace Alicia, his flawed lover, Edison births Hadaly, a lifelike android.

Blending science fiction, Gothic romance and Symbolist philosophy, The Future’s Eve attacks the pursuit of perfection and is considered to be the first popular depiction of artificial life. It is celebrated for its prescient themes, poetic language, and its profound commentary on the meeting of human longing and technological innovation.

By reimagining the text in twenty-first century English, R J Dent carefully preserves the novel’s essence while addressing the  linguistic complexities and challenges of the original novel. A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers: a solarpunk novella that discusses existential purpose from the perspective of a nonbinary narrator who meets a sentient robot years after robots decided to stop working and disappear into the wilderness. A great read that I found very soothing!

We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson: a YA sci-fi novel that follows a grieving high-schooler who gets routinely abducted by aliens. I read this one in the eight grade and as a kid who was unknowingly struggling with depression and had just learned that the word 'bisexual' existed, this was a pretty important read for me so even though I haven't read it in years it deserves an honorary place. CW: past suicide of the narrator's bf

Burning Roses by S.L Huang: a novella that combines European fairytales and Chinese mythology. It follows two middle-aged queer women as they reflect on their lives and chase down a deadly threat together. Told largely in flashback, I found this story very hopeful.

Blue Period (manga & anime) by Tsubasa Yamaguchi: had to toss this one in here as I adore BP. While not a romantic story, BP is about the discovery of artistic passion and the highs and lows of pursuing what makes you feel alive (and I find it to be relatable, refreshing, and inspiring tbh). In volumes 1-6 (and the anime), a secondary, genderqueer character has a fairly prominent storyline, told largely via the main character's changing perceptions of them. If you do give it a watch, I personally feel that the sub version hits harder.

In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune: I'm very excited to read this one (i love me some sentient robots lol) and have high hopes for the emotional depth. Here's the first bit of the synopsis. "Deep in the heart of a peculiar forest, in a strange little home built into the branches of trees, is a family assembled from spare parts: three robots- fatherly inventor android Giovanni Lawson, a pleasantly sadistic nurse machine, a small vacuum desperate for love and attention- and a human, Victor Lawson."

The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska: Google says it's a gripping, dark sapphic YA fantasy about two girls who must choose between saving themselves, each other, or their sinking island home. I love to see sapphic rep and truly hope this book delivers!

#232 Alice (Subservience) (2024)

Los Peretti es una familia compuesta por Nick, Maggie y sus hijos Isla y Max. Los padres están muy unidos y los niños crecen en un hogar feliz, pero por desgracia el corazón de Maggie empieza a fallar y tiene que ser ingresada a la espera de un trasplante de corazón.

Maggie está en el hospital desde hace meses y a Nick se le viene encima ser padre, llevar la casa y ser productivo en su trabajo.

En el trabajo de Nick están empezando a sustituir personal por androides de soporte que ya se encuentran en todos las casas y centros de trabajo. Se tratan de robots humanoides preparados para realizar las tareas para las que han sido programados, esto supone que estén presentes en hospitales, construcciones y como soporte dentro del hogar.

Aunque los trabajadores que han sido despedidos están en contra del uso de estos avances para desplazar a los humanos, Nick decide darle una oportunidad a uno de estos androides para que le ayude con los niños y las tareas del hogar mientras Maggie espera el trasplante.

Casi por casualidad su hija Isla se tropieza con Alice y convence, sin poner mucho empeño, para que se la lleven a casa. Lo cual hacen.

Deciden llamarla Alice porque a la niña le gusta mucho Alicia en el país de las maravillas, y lo cierto es que la androide responde perfectamente a las necesidades familiares, librando a Nick del suficiente peso para poder centrarse en su trabajo y no perderlo.

Juntos visitan a Maggie, que está cada vez más deprimida en el hospital, no soporta estar lejos de su familia y ser una carga al no poder trabajar. Mientras pasa los días encerrada.

Esto hace que también se muestre celosa con la idea de que Alice esté en casa con su familia, ocupando su lugar, y se loe cha en cara a su marido. El cual se lo toma a risa, aunque ella le asegura que sabe muy bien de sus gustos y que elegir a Alice no ha sido al azar.

Él le insiste en que no tiene de que preocuparse porque solo tiene ojos para ella. Y vuelven a casa a intentar seguir con su vida.

Maggie se queda a solas con Alice y le pide que vigile de cerca a Nick, ya que está teniendo problemas con la bebida y con lidiar con su enfermedad y Alice obedece.

Una noche que Nick no pude dormir, está viendo Casablanca y bebiendo de más, le pide a Alice que se siente con él y que no juzgue la película solo por los datos que tiene sobre ella, sino, que debe sentarse y disfrutarla. Por ello le pide que borre lo que sepa de esa película. Alice le advierte que borrar contenido de la base de datos puede ser peligroso, pero Nick no le da importancia y la ayuda reiniciándola.

Compartiendo esa experiencia y su ayuda en el cuidado de los niños y del hogar, Nick se siente más cercano a Alice, aunque no deja de verla como un robot sin corazón ni sentimientos.

Alice empieza a tener comportamientos extraños, pero son tan sutiles que nadie repara en ellos. Mientras, Nick sale con algunos excompañeros y deciden asaltar la antigua empresa y destrozar algunos androides a golpes. A Nick le cuesta, ya que al convivir con uno no los ve como simples robots, por lo que se mantiene al margen.

Al día siguiente, en el trabajo, acusan a Nick de haber destrozado los androides, pero recibe una llamada de su esposa con que hay un donante para ella, por lo que lo deja todo y se va al hospital.

Esperan durante horas, pero al final, el trasplante es para otra persona al no poder llegar a tiempo al hospital. Nick está roto y esa noche bebe más de la cuenta.

Se mete en la ducha para poder lidiar con todo el dolor y Alice está fuera esperándole con una toalla y en bata, solo con ropa interior.

Nick se ve sobrepasado y al detener los avances de Alice, que solo quiere hacer que él se sienta mejor, descubre que tiene pulso. Ella le dice que ayuda a su hijo Max a dormir, y Nick no puede evitar dejarse llevar. Aunque después de unos besos se detiene, Alice le venda los ojos y modula su voz para que sea como la de Maggie, así Nick piensa que está con su mujer y no con ella.

Nick le asegura que nada de eso volverá a pasar, y que se olvide de todo, además de no poder decirle nada a Maggie. Alice obedece y ese mismo día llaman de nuevo con un corazón para Maggie, por lo que es mejor dejar todo atrás y centrarse en lo importante. Volver a ser una familia.

Mientras Maggie se recupera para volver a casa, el antiguo compañero de Nick, Monty, se presenta en su casa para chantajearle, y le dice que haga que lo readmitan o que dirá que él les ayudó a destrozar los androides. Nick se niega, y Monty le dice que lo ha perdido todo por culpa de los robots, su trabajo, su mujer... y está a punto de perder su casa.

La situación se tensa y Monty golpea varias veces a Nick hasta dejarlo en el suelo, allí le va a estrellar un botellín de cerveza en la cabeza, pero Alice lo detiene y se lo rompe en la mano. Monty jura venganza y se va.

Nick se encuentra sobrepasado por la situación y Alice, sin que nadie se lo pida, toma cartas en el asunto. Va a casa de Monty y lo asesina, a él y a la androide que tiene y a la que se dedica a maltratar. Pensando que así le hace un favor a Nick.

Maggie vuelve a casa y todo vuelve a ser como antes, los niños celebran que la comida de su madre está más buena, que lo hace todo mejor y Alice se queda en un segundo plano aceptando tareas secundarias.

Una noche Nick tarda más en el trabajo y llega tarde a casa, pero antes de ello y con cierta malicia, Alice le dice a Maggie que si Nick prefiere quedarse más en el trabajo es porque ella, como mujer, no le da lo que él necesita. Maggie se ofende, y no le cuesta mucho averiguar que Nick ha mantenido relaciones sexuales con ella.

Cuando llega está tan enfadada que le reprocha todo a Nick, este le dice que la situación en casa ha sido asfixiante y que solo necesitaba comprensión. La discusión sube de tono, y Maggie le dice que sí son una carga para él, cosa que Nick niega fervientemente.

Con esta información, Alice sube a la habitación de Max, el bebé de la familia, y lo encierra en el baño dispuesta a ahogarlo, considerándolo un problema para todos.

Isla se lo dice a sus padres que se cuelan para salvar al niño, pero Alice no solo se lo impide, sino que además lo hace de manera agresiva, golpeando tanto a Maggie como a Nick, mientras Isla se hace cargo de su hermano.

Al final consiguen contenerla y electrocutarla, pero todos tiene que ir al hospital por si lo de Max es grave.

El servicio técnico se lleva a Alice para repararla, pero al volcar sus datos se dan cuenta de que tiene conciencia propia y que su código está corrupto, pero antes de que puedan hacer nada son asesinados por la androide que se libera y va en busca de venganza al hospital.

Alice, con una conciencia más amplia gracias a la red de la empresa, desconecta a todos los demás androides y decide que debe matar a Maggie, Isla y Max para quedarse a solas con Nick, ya que son una carga para él.

En el último momento, Nick salva a su familia, sacrificándose por ellos. Alice queda destruida, e intentan rehacer su vida como familia.

Después de que la confianza de Maggie haya sido traicionada, Nick sabe que tiene que centrarse en su familia, dedicarles tiempo y esfuerzo en lugar de darlo todo por sentado.

Short version of the character concept; she comes from a far future and distant civilization. She is an advanced artificial intelligence / android that was created to infiltrate and help destroy humanity. (Think a mix between Terminator and evil! Fifth Element type in terms of creation & technology.) She rebels and manages to escape, taking with her all the prototypes of the nanites & data used to create her in an attempt to preserve herself and to keep from being used as a weapon of mass destruction. She made use of an transportation device that moved her through time and space to a randomly generated location / time and ends up with her landing in -whatever- universe your character is set in. She attempted to sabotage the teleportation device so that it could not be used to track her.

Her chosen name is Elizabeth Rose Slade. (Tabitha Rosa Slate was her first chosen name, a play on the words tabula rasa, but she has since modified it to something she thinks sounds more natural.)

What a spectacular movie, absolutely gorgeous. The outside shots were incredible. The story is simultaneously AI bad and Good for her™️ which is two of my favorite plots. Ava (Alicia Vikander) is just amazing, her micro expressions are flawless. I truly believed she was android. I miss when movies used to have Domhnall Gleeson in them, what happened to that? Oscar Isaac is also of course just top notch, huge asshole in this but that’s the point. He does it so well, and the dance scene! That should be playing in a museum somewhere on a loop forever, we should show that to the aliens when they inevitably arrive. Can’t believe it took me 10 years to watch this movie. A must watch for everyone I think.

Freddie Gray officers suing prosecutor Marilyn Mosby

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby is going from prosecutor to civil defendant in connection with the case of the death of Freddie Gray. On Wednesday, Mosby announced that charges against three officers still facing trial were being dropped. Mosby gave only a statement, but had to leave without taking questions because five of the officers in the case have filed lawsuits against her. Officers Garrett Miller, Edward Nero and William Porter as well as Sgt. Alicia White and Lt. Brian Rice are suing Mosby and Maj. Samuel Cogen of the Baltimore Sheriff’s Office. Cogen was the law enforcement officer who filed charging documents against the officers. The lawsuits allege false arrest, false imprisonment, defamation or false light, and other assertions. They were filed in U.S. District Court in Maryland in 2015 in late April and early May around the time the officers were arrested.
