Carry On - Part 2

Title: Carry On

Chapter #: 2

Summary:  An imaginative twist on a classic tale, Carry On is set in an alternate universe where Goku is never sent to Earth and the Saiyan homeworld is never destroyed by Freeza. It follows the adventures of Rosamoona, daughter of Goku and Music, daughter of Raditz as they are accidentally sent to Earth when Vegeta falls into an abrupt war. With the mystical dragon balls their only way back to the burning planet, will the Son girls be able to carry on?

Note: Second chapter is here and also available on AO3. This chapter we start to introduce some new (or rather old?) characters that you’ll all recognize.

Fire. Fire danced before my eyes, the acrid scent of dead bodies and thick smoke that accompanied it filled my nose and caused me to choke. The roar of flames mixed with the screams of the injured and dying. Tremors shook the ground below me, making it difficult to stand. Tears filled my eyes and ran down my cheeks, streaking my grimy face.

I covered my ears, trying desperately to block out the screams. My eyes squeezed shut tightly so I didn’t have to look at the horrors in front of me. The ground shook again, leading me to crouch down. This isn’t happening, this isn’t happening, this isn’t happening...  I continuously chanted these words, both in my head and out loud. I wasn’t here, this was some crazy dream. This isn’t happening, this isn’t happening, this isn’t happening...

Suddenly, I felt a hot, heavy hand on my shoulder. Jumping, I opened my eyes and screamed.

Daddy stood in front of me, his hand still on my shoulder. His normally tan skin was red and black from the flames. Blood trickled from places where the skin was peeling, revealing the muscle, and in certain areas the bone, underneath. Daddy’s ebony eyes were dark and blank, holding no life in them. His hair was singed, entire patches of it gone. If it wasn’t for the fact that some of his hair remained, I never would have recognized him as my father.

I jumped again, this time backward and away from Daddy - or rather, what was left of him. I scrambled on my butt as Daddy took a shaky step towards me. The hand that had been on my shoulder had fallen and was now hanging limply at his side.

“Moon...ney...” Daddy’s voice was raspy from smoke inhalation. He moved towards me again, and I once more scooted away from him. The tears started anew, pouring down my filthy cheeks. I took heaving breaths, the sobs shaking me as much as the earthquakes had been. My name left his lips a second and third time. By now I had stopped moving away and was simply staring up at him in horror as Daddy came closer. Just when I thought this couldn’t get worse, Daddy exploded.

A bright burst of Ki shot through my father before causing him to explode. Bits and pieces of him littered the ground in front of me. I was stunned silent before I opened my lips and screamed as loud as I could.

The scream woke me from the horrific nightmare. I shot up into a sitting position, breathing heavily. Sweat poured down my trembling frame. My hair was plastered to my head, some of it hanging in my face. With an unsteady hand, I moved it so I could see.

The room I was in was unfamiliar. It was plain looking, with only minor decorations and a few pieces of furniture, including the bed I was currently sitting on. A quick inspection of myself showed I wore a shirt, many sizes too large for me. Where had my clothes gone? Who changed me? Most importantly, where was I?

Before I could come up with an answer to these questions, the door to the room burst open, spilling in light from the hall. A short man with short, black hair stood in the doorway. He had on a green shirt with light tan shorts and black shoes. Six dots were arranged in two columns on his forehead. I froze when I saw him. Our eyes met for a brief second before I sprang from the bed, getting into a defensive stance. The shirt I wore fell past my knees and hung loosely on my frame. Instantly, the man held up his hands.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay. Calm down, alright? I’m not gonna hurt you.” He spoke in the same language as the girl earlier. The girl. She must have gotten help after I passed out.

Tentatively, the man took a step forward. I tensed up again, my body coiled tightly, ready to spring. The man could sense this and spoke again, gentler this time.

“It’s okay, I swear. I’m a police officer, I’m not gonna hurt you. Are you okay? I heard you scream a few minutes ago.”

“Who are you?” I demanded, upset I wasn’t able to keep my voice from shaking. “Where’s Music?”

“My name is Krillin,” he starts, taking another step forward. I watched his movements in case he tried anything. “Is Music the girl you were with in the field?” I slowly nodded.

Krillin lowered his hands, gesturing over his shoulder with a jerk of his thumb. “She’s in a room down the hall. She’s okay, just resting.”

I relaxed slightly. I could tell he was telling the truth.

“Are you okay?” Krillin asked me for the hundredth time. “What happened to you two? Marron says you were part of the explosion? Is that true?”

Slowly, I straightened out of my defensive state, but I still kept my guard up. “Take me to see Music,” I demanded, thankful I was able to keep my voice steady this time. “I wanna see her.”

With a kind smile, Krillin nodded. “I figured you’d say something like that. Follow me; I’ll take you to her.”

I walked behind the short man, walking on the balls of my feet. The soft carpet tickled my toes and I suddenly felt very vulnerable. I was in a strange home following a strange man on a strange planet. I still didn’t even know what species these people were! I thought about Vegeta, which immediately brought my dream back to me. I shuddered, tears pricking the corner of my eyes. I had to keep reminding myself that it was just a dream and that Daddy was strong. His fate wasn’t the same as it was in my nightmare. At least, that’s what I desperately hoped.

Krillin stopped in front of a closed door. He glanced at me before opening it. I pushed past him, eager to see my cousin.

Music lay in the bed, her black hair spilled across the pillow. Her breathing was steady as I watched her chest rise and fall. As I got closer, I could see that she too was wearing an oversized shirt, just like I was. Music had minor bruises and cuts from our crashing landing, but they appeared to have been taken care of. I sent a silent prayer that she wasn’t seriously hurt.

“What happened to you two?” Krillin asked softly from behind me in the doorway.

Taking a deep breath, I turned around and held my head up to try and look more confident than I was feeling.

“I’m not answering any questions until Music wakes up.” That way we could figure out how to answer them together.

After a moment, Krillin nodded. “Alright, if you insist. Can I get you something while you wait?”

My stomach growled loudly at the thought of food, but I shook my head defiantly and sat down on the floor next to Music’s bed. I would wait, no matter how long it took my cousin to wake up.

A little DragonBall Super What-If here(Gohan VS Sym: Part 1). First off, those Cell Jrs are indeed alive. Gohan beat them into pieces, but that's just it, pieces. He didn't wipe them out down to a molecular level like Cell. They regenerated & have been on that animal reserve island Android 17 protects(and Goten & Trunks were able to fight them off. Crazy, considering that Goku & Vegeta couldn't beat them).

Anyway, those Cell Jrs see Gohan again & fuse into one, Sym. Short for both Syncytium & Symplasm, multiple cells. Idk if people draw Bio-Andriod #OCs with names based on or are puns of cells, but here's an example. When it comes to the Android numbers, Android 21 from FighterZ, who's based off Gero's wife, was clearly made before Cell. Cell in the main timeline was in that larva state. So after Gero(Android 20), there's Android 21, Cell is Android 22, and the Cell Jrs, and in turn Sym, would be Android 23.

Sym doesn't want vengeance, he's not like his father. Similar to Piccolo Jr. In fact, being on Earth for 14 years(seriously, the Cell Jrs would be Kid Trunks' age), and 17 not killing the Cell Jrs, chaged him a bit. But he wants a rematch with Gohan, wants to at least understand why Cell wanted to fight so much.

So he gives Gohan 10 days to train, which he too will also do since he's behind, but knows about God Ki, so being part Saiyan & part of Frieza's race, would end in insane training results. Such as forms beyond Frieza's Golden Form, Diamond, then Platinum.

Sym uses the tail as a weapon, not for absorption. He doesnt really need that, but more importantly he doesn't want to rely on that like his father.

When it comes to character development, you can imagine interactions between him & Piccolo and the Androids, and especially Videl & Pan(who Sym would be a big brother type to). Also, the mask bit from Cooler, can switch like his(ok, Cooler isn't canon, but Frieza could probably do it if he obtained that 5th form).

How come you feel "Zarkon's early death" doesn't work?

The actual fight itself is very well done.  The fight, the ambiance, and the animation isright up there with the other great fights of the series.  I also don’t have a problem with and actuallyprefer that Lotor is the one that ultimately ends up defeating/killing Zarkon,since it has a much greater character impact. But I have a problem with the overall idea for several reasons.  This mainly relates to the fact that Voltronhas an overall problem of telling us facts/story points rather than showingthem, and that Zarkon’s death so early on in the season is not used to set upeven greater villain(s) and thus comes off as anticlimactic.  

Emperor Zarkon reminds me greatly of Emperor Frieza fromDragonball Z.  In fact, given Voltron’stendency to reference, they might have even been inspired by/trying to pull aFrieza with Zarkon.  Frieza also ends upultimately dying/being defeated very early on in a season.  However, this ends up working tremendously asa storyline because (1) Frieza’s position as emperor and terrifying power havebeen repeatedly established for what ends up being a good chunk of the originalDBZ run (aka prior to Majin Buu addition) (2) the time they took to establishhis power and (3) his defeat beautifully sets up a series of increasingly morepowerful and terrifying villains in DBZ afterwards. 

The Emperor’s Power:

Frieza ends up being the ultimate villain of the FriezaGroup of Sagas (heading to Namek up the original defeat of Frieza), which endsup being 71 episodes in the original run and 37 episodes in DBZ Kai (whichessentially got rid of filler/ things not in the manga).  As it turns out, from the beginning of Voltronto Zarkon’s death in S5E2 ends up being 39 episodes.  However most people grew up with the originalrun of DBZ, myself included, so I’ll be referring to the original 71 episoderun. I’d also include the special/movie “Bardock the Father of Goku” in thelineup, since it provides even more background of how Frieza is in power, and howwith literally one swish of a finger he wipes out an entire planet save for ahandful of survivors (sound familiar with Zarkon vs Altea?)

What DBZ ends up doing is working up to its villains.  The first is Raditz, who literally leads tothe main character’s death, and then ultimately Vegeta/Nappa, who end upkilling half/most of the main cast.  Wellguess what?  Those guys WORKED forFrieza.  The main characters then go upagainst Zarbon/Dodoria, then the Ginyu Force, which again are increasinglydifficult villains who merely WORK for Frieza. This does end up having an equivalent in Voltron in characters such asSendak, other commanders sent against the paladins, and the Robeasts.  

The differences are immediately apparent when we finally getto “the final boss”.  Entire episodes arededicated to fighting Frieza.  Multiple peoplefight Frieza personally.  Then they fightFrieza through several different transformation stages of his that onlyincrease in power before finally getting to his ultimate form and once againkilling off at least two major characters (Krillin, Vegeta).  This is finally overcome with the first maincharacter/Super Saiyan transformation of the series and then thinking we’veultimately killed Frieza.  We get tophysically see the reasons that Frieza is so feared and has held onto his positionas emperor.  

Zarkon, on the other hand and for the most part, we aremerely TOLD that he is powerful.  In theentirety of his 39 episode run as the ultimate villain, he is foughtpersonally/face to face only THREE times. This is:

·       Zarkon vs. the Red Lion/Keith, S1E11, which lastsroughly 7 minutes.  The actual length ofthe fight is even less because there are cutaways to Shiro vs. Haggar, as wellas rescuing Allura.  

·       Zarkon in his mech vs. Voltron, S2E13, whichlasts roughly 15 minutes.  The actuallength is even less since there are cutaways to Allura/Kolivan vs. Haggar/herdruids.

·       Huge wait to reach Mech/Suited Zarkon vs. Lotor,S5E2, which last roughly 10 minutes.  Andonce again the actual length is less due to cutaways of ½ paladins vs. Galra fleet,and the other ½ paladins rescuing Sam Holt.

An additional problem with the Zarkon fights aside from the firstis the question is how powerful is Zarkon all on his own.  Frieza (with the possible exception of whenhe returns in the Trunks Saga) is entirely under his own power and his power isonly enhanced by his personal transformations. Zarkon’s very first fight appears entirely under his own power.  But then there’s the second fight, andquestions of how much is it Zarkon’s power vs. Haggar/druids magic assisting/weakeningVoltron vs. his mech power assisting. The same happens with the final fight, how much is purely Zarkon vs. hisarmor vs. the quintessence he is absorbing.

Time:  

The 71 DBZ episodes in question, the original English dubrelease in the US ran from 9/20/1997 to 11/3/1999, or roughly 2 years and 2months.  This was also released in astandard viewing format/serialized television, aka of either daily or weeklyepisode releases.  Because you’re waitingfor a day or a week at a time to see what happens next, you keep that anticipationrunning.  

Voltron Season 1 was released in its entirety to Netflix onJune 2016.  Season 5, where Zarkon isdefeated, was released in its entirety to Netflix in March 2018.  That translates to roughly 1 year and 8months, which is already a shorter time span. The other problem that happens is that while yes you wait between seasons,you can marathon an entire season/the entire show in a matter of hours.  This is less of anticipation and moredrumming your thumbs waiting for the next season.  

Killing him off earlyin a season/Using his defeat to set up subsequent villains:

In the original DBZ release, there was a short season afterthe defeat of Frieza.  Granted the GarlicJr. Saga is technically filler, but it presents a new powerful villain.  But directly after that the main heroes findout that Frieza is still alive and coming directly to Earth.  I cannot tell you as a child how fuckingFRUSTRATING it was to have Frieza return as a villain because we had alreadyspent so fucking long with him as a villain.

But then FutureTrunks arrives and completely wipes him AND Frieza’s apparently even morepowerful father in almost an instant (4 episodes original, 2 episodes DBZ Kai).  It was so remarkable that it’s the entirereason Future Trunks started to become one of my top fav characters in thefirst place.  But then DBZ uses what Iconsider a brilliant story mechanic of using Frieza’s insta-death to set up thenext several villains.  The entire reasonFuture Trunks came back to the past was because there are two villains sopowerful that Trunks, who just insta-killed Frieza/King Cold, can’t defeatthem.  This then sets up Androids 19 and20, oh no opps those weren’t the (an)droids I was looking for.  But wait there they are Andriods 17 and 18and oh shit Android 16, who are all more powerful than 19/20.  But wait again here’s Cell, who starts outalready is more powerful then them because he can absorb power by killingpeople and is stronger than 17/18.  OhFUCK what do you mean Cell reaches his final form by absorbing 17 and 18???

Again, in short, killing off Frieza so early in a seasonworks beautifully because (1) its been thoroughly established how powerful heis and (2) his death is used as the starting point setting off severalsubsequent villains.  Zarkon’s death,however, fails on both fronts.  He hasessentially been poorly established in how powerful he is.  And his death ends up ultimately anticlimacticbecause its not used to do anything.  There’sa reason that ultimately defeating a villain is usually saved for a seasonfinale/end of a movie/end of a saga, or at least a mid-season/mid-saga finale, becausethat’s where it works best.  If you endup using it at a much earlier point you better have a damn good set-up orreason for doing so (which, again, Frieza’s works but Zarkon’s doesn’t)

What I think the writers should have done to make this workwas use Zarkon’s death to fully establish Sendak.  And they appear to somewhat start doing thisbefore shoehorning Lotor in as the villain for that season.  Sendak was personally chosen and traineddirectly by Zarkon, and the relationship essentially comes off as Zarkon usingSendak to replace Lotor.  We start to seethis in Haggar backing Sendak, Sendak fighting at the Kral Zera, and thenleading the Fires of Purification.  Butthen after S6E1, Sendak just fucks off the entire rest of the season, and we’releft with the poorly established/poorly executed/shoe-horned “Lotor was avillain all along!” finale.  Granted,Sendak returns as a rather terrifying villain in s7, but I feel its completelyundercut by s6.  

What I believe ultimately would have worked better is, postZarkon’s death and keeping closer to the canon we got, continuing to build upSendak as a villain until the s7 finale. Have him be motivated as getting revenge for Zarkon, or that he feelsthat only he is the proper/true successor to Zarkon.  Have him keep attacking the paladins/Lotor inincreasingly difficult/ insane manner (like the attack on Omega Shield), suchas killing people/planets just to get at the paladins/Lotor.  Needing more power or ships to fight Sendak couldhave also fed into the reason they go to Oriande, completing Sincline, andgetting into the quintessence field, which in canon feels rather disjointed withshaky motivations.  Then take Sendak allthe way up to the point of he is either directly the reason, or Haggar throughSendak, is the reason the Castleship is destroyed and the Lions are withoutpower.  Then, instead of killing them offlike fish in a barrel, he does something else to hurt them more:  letting them know he’s going to destroy Earth,and leave.  That in turn would make Sendakan even greater villain in s7.  

I also have an opposing idea of directly building Zarkon upproperly for a season then turning it over to Sendak the next season, but thatwould be an entire post in itself.

Future Trunks... not sure what iteration yet since I’ve only seen one version of him in action but I’ll probably do the first one. I just like his outifts, even the GT ones from pics I’ve seen. So yeah...considering that

Andriod 17 is another option I am recently considering... like my if I can’t build up any muscle option since even though he’s fit he has a more slim look to him...at least in the form I am familiar with.

From Gundam shows:

Heero Yuy, no idea which outfit but thought he’d be fun to cosplay

at one point I considered doing kid Nanashi but IDK if I could piece together the outfit or find someone to make it for me.

Lockon Stratos: either Neil in casual wear or episode 23-ish, or I want to cosplay as Lyle in his casual clothing.

Tieria Erde: not confident enough to do this cosplay yet since ATM but maybe one day.

Kamille BIden: cause why not?

Code Geass: Suzaku in the outfit he wore when he first met Euphie, in the knight outfit he wore when protecting Euphie, or in his Knight of seven outfit. I have already cosplayed him in his Knight of Zero outfit and it was a knightmare (see what I did there?) because it was a jump-suit type ordeal.

Chrono Cross: either Serge or Norris, but it’s honestly just a passing thought...not sure if I’ll do it or not.

Tsubasa: C! Syaoran in a specific outfit he wore in the ending sequence of Tokyo Revelations...but I’d only do it if I had a Sakura cosplayer with me (it’s sort of a couple cosplay fantasy I have...yeah I know...)

I might add more to this or actually add pictures later if people would like that...not sure if I can do all of these or how many I will actually do but it would be nice to do at least one right?

Explain that Akira. Super saiyanmixed with humans are more powerful, and there are many ways im sure to do it. Goku has a natural talent he also doesnt just do it for himself but for the ones he loves.

Vegeta had to much lust for power n couldnt do it till he humbled himself. Goten has talent as well a simple innocent mind like goku until gt that is, gohan takes awhile and uses his dads instructions. Trunks has no choice but to make his dad proud. I agree that the power level of the father contributes during conception. Gohan still had to work hard to attain it but everyone knew of his dormant power because it was displayed in bursts. I couldn’t agree more. I hated the ease of transformation for many if the characters.

Neither goten or trunks are strong as super saiyans both are far weaker than piccolo who. whoever says its cus there parents knew how to train them vegeta didnt know trunks could go super saiyan and neither did gohan while training goten. thetentia genes is like a wide net cus broly didnt have a super saiyan father and he was born super saiyan like goten and trunks. i reckon frieza can take goten and trunks as children super saiyan doesnt nessasarily mean strong remember gohan was potentially.the strongest.after the buu saga and he did turn ssj at all and andriod 17 and 18 were stronger then.

Vegeta super saiyan. Um, you do realize the only reason they were able to ascend to ssj3 was because of fusion correct? The only thing that was accomplished at all was them ascending ss while kids. Isn’t another aspect of being super saiyan is that you have to be pure of heart (whether thats good or not) and since goku and vegeta’s offspring were only half saiyan they didn’t need to put as much effort into trying to become super saiyan? actually it is harder for the pure blooded saiyans to transform into a SSJ….but not for a half-blooded saiyan……but on the bright sight, the pure blooded saiyan has seen to reach even SSJ3 and SSJ4 where no half-blooded saiyan was above level 2…..except for ultimate gohan, who had a mystic potential which was magically unleashed by elder kai.
