❤ Google confirms Pixel 8a is coming with Android’s new battery stats
In addressing a Pixel feature that’s disappeared, Google has confirmed that the Pixel 8a is on its way. Back in Android 14’s QPR1 update, Google added a new extension of battery stats, which showed charging cycle counts and the date the battery was manufactured. This was a welcome addition, but also limited in how useful it actually was. In the March 2024 update for Pixel phones, though, this…

Updated Personal Infosec Post
Been awhile since I've had one of these posts part deus: but I figure with all that's going on in the world it's time to make another one and get some stuff out there for people. A lot of the information I'm going to go over you can find here:
https://www.privacyguides.org/en/tools/
So if you'd like to just click the link and ignore the rest of the post that's fine, I strongly recommend checking out the Privacy Guides. Browsers: There's a number to go with but for this post going forward I'm going to recommend Firefox. I know that the Privacy Guides lists Brave and Safari as possible options but Brave is Chrome based now and Safari has ties to Apple. Mullvad is also an option but that's for your more experienced users so I'll leave that up to them to work out. Browser Extensions:
uBlock Origin: content blocker that blocks ads, trackers, and fingerprinting scripts. Notable for being the only ad blocker that still works on Youtube.
Privacy Badger: Content blocker that specifically blocks trackers and fingerprinting scripts. This one will catch things that uBlock doesn't catch but does not work for ads.
Facebook Container: "but I don't have facebook" you might say. Doesn't matter, Meta/Facebook still has trackers out there in EVERYTHING and this containerizes them off away from everything else.
Bitwarden: Password vaulting software, don't trust the password saving features of your browsers, this has multiple layers of security to prevent your passwords from being stolen.
ClearURLs: Allows you to copy and paste URL's without any trackers attached to them.
VPN: Note: VPN software doesn't make you anonymous, no matter what your favorite youtuber tells you, but it does make it harder for your data to be tracked and it makes it less open for whatever public network you're presently connected to.
Mozilla VPN: If you get the annual subscription it's ~$60/year and it comes with an extension that you can install into Firefox.
Mullvad VPN: Is a fast and inexpensive VPN with a serious focus on transparency and security. They have been in operation since 2009. Mullvad is based in Sweden and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for payment methods that allow it.
Email Provider: Note: By now you've probably realized that Gmail, Outlook, and basically all of the major "free" e-mail service providers are scraping your e-mail data to use for ad data. There are more secure services that can get you away from that but if you'd like the same storage levels you have on Gmail/Ol utlook.com you'll need to pay.
Tuta: Secure, end-to-end encrypted, been around a very long time, and offers a free option up to 1gb.
Mailbox.org: Is an email service with a focus on being secure, ad-free, and privately powered by 100% eco-friendly energy. They have been in operation since 2014. Mailbox.org is based in Berlin, Germany. Accounts start with up to 2GB storage, which can be upgraded as needed.
Email Client:
Thunderbird: a free, open-source, cross-platform email, newsgroup, news feed, and chat (XMPP, IRC, Matrix) client developed by the Thunderbird community, and previously by the Mozilla Foundation.
FairMail (Android Only): minimal, open-source email app which uses open standards (IMAP, SMTP, OpenPGP), has several out of the box privacy features, and minimizes data and battery usage.
Cloud Storage:
Tresorit: Encrypted cloud storage owned by the national postal service of Switzerland. Received MULTIPLE awards for their security stats.
Peergos: decentralized and open-source, allows for you to set up your own cloud storage, but will require a certain level of expertise.
Microsoft Office Replacements:
LibreOffice: free and open-source, updates regularly, and has the majority of the same functions as base level Microsoft Office.
OnlyOffice: cloud-based, free
FreeOffice: Personal licenses are free, probably the closest to a fully office suite replacement.
Chat Clients: Note: As you've heard SMS and even WhatsApp and some other popular chat clients are basically open season right now. These are a couple of options to replace those. Note2: Signal has had some reports of security flaws, the service it was built on was originally built for the US Government, and it is based within the CONUS thus is susceptible to US subpoenas. Take that as you will.
Signal: Provides IM and calling securely and encrypted, has multiple layers of data hardening to prevent intrusion and exfil of data.
Molly (Android OS only): Alternative client to Signal. Routes communications through the TOR Network.
Briar: Encrypted IM client that connects to other clients through the TOR Network, can also chat via wifi or bluetooth.
SimpleX: Truly anonymous account creation, fully encrypted end to end, available for Android and iOS.
Now for the last bit, I know that the majority of people are on Windows or macOS, but if you can get on Linux I would strongly recommend it. pop_OS, Ubuntu, and Mint are super easy distros to use and install. They all have very easy to follow instructions on how to install them on your PC and if you'd like to just test them out all you need is a thumb drive to boot off of to run in demo mode. For more secure distributions for the more advanced users the options are: Whonix, Tails (Live USB only), and Qubes OS.
On a personal note I use Arch Linux, but I WOULD NOT recommend this be anyone's first distro as it requires at least a base level understanding of Linux and liberal use of the Arch Linux Wiki. If you game through Steam their Proton emulator in compatibility mode works wonders, I'm presently playing a major studio game that released in 2024 with no Linux support on it and once I got my drivers installed it's looked great. There are some learning curves to get around, but the benefit of the Linux community is that there's always people out there willing to help. I hope some of this information helps you and look out for yourself, it's starting to look scarier than normal out there.

HUAWEI Watch Fit 3 - an Apple alternative?
I wanted to write a long term review about the HUAWEI Watch Fit 3. I have been using this device for 8 months and prior to that I had a Hauwei Band 9.
Both HUAWEI fitness trackers I have owned have had connectivity issues. But before I get onto that I will start with the positives.
HUAWEI fitness trackers are known for their accuracy. The devices do have fantastic longevity and heart rate accuracy that is comparable to wearing a chest strap.
There have been some mixed reviews on sleep tracking and it seems that this is potentially where the HUAWEI trackers fall short. I can’t say I have monitored the accuracy of this too closely.
Regarding calorie counting is there really an accurate measure? Every device has its variations my treadmill does provide a lower figure than the fitness tracker. Others have mentioned that it under calculates steps and calories but my steps have been very accurate.
It has a comprehensive amount of workouts, it has great accuracy and the battery is out of this world. You can get anywhere between 7-10 days out of it and it charges very quickly.
It does lack some features such as Apple Pay or Google Pay and is more of a fitness tracker with basic smartwatch features.
As it is HUAWEI accessories and replacements straps are not readily available.
The HUAWEI health app is easy to use and very comprehensive. However, it is not available on the Google Play store. It is available on the Apple App Store, Samsungs own App Store same with Xiaomi and Honor.
This is an issue for Pixel users as the Play store is the only App Store available on Pixel. There are work arounds to get the app on Pixel but it often fails to connect and if it does connect the app doesn’t sync well.
I was able to download HUAWEI health from the Samsung App Store. It was easy enough to set up but I did have to reach out to HUAWEI as the watch didn’t automatically reconnect to the phone and it kept disconnecting.
I had the best experience using it with my Honor phone which ironically were owned by HUAWEI. The integration was very good.
I am now using it with an iPhone. Despite the fact the app is available in the App Store I have noticed some restrictions using it with iOS. Firstly, I am unable to individually select which apps I want to receive notifications on my watch from. It’s all or nothing which is frustrating as I don’t need my wrist buzzing with news headlines.
You are unable to download any additional apps but even when you can do this your options are limited anyway.
90% of the time you are unable to control music from the watch and the stats don’t integrate with Apples own fitness apps.
You also have to leave the HUAWEI health app open or you won’t receive notifications or alerts and the watch can disconnect.
If you get an alert on the app about your sleep or exercise etc this does interfere with notifications again and you have to open the app sync it and then it works.
I have never owned an Apple Watch so I can’t compare. However, if you are an iPhone user I would suggest that the Apple Watch will have better integration and better features.
I would avoid this watch if you are a Pixel user.
There is an argument that Apple trap you into an ecosystem but Google and Samsung all have their own smartwatches and ear buds etc that are all designed to work seamlessly together. For the best experience all your devices should be the same brand regardless of what that brand is.
I do like the HUAWEI Watch Fit 3 but not I am an iPhone user with no intention of switching back to Android I will be saving up for an Apple Watch.
Downside of Apple Watches? Battery life, price and not compatible with Android.

Salvager Chapter 1: Floor 190
There looked to be… about a hundred and twenty androids plugged into the recharge ports. Trouble, Salvager grimaced to himself, peering through his magnification glasses at them all from his hiding spot. His back was against the hard glass surface of what had once been a display screen--fortunately, someone had thought to paint it black at some point in the last seven years, renewing its usefulness--and his boots were planted firmly against the floor, his eyes raised just a slit above the screen’s top. Two second intervals, he decided, flicking his gaze to the ceiling. Yeah… That should do the trick…
Though the robots were tethered to the battery farm now, it would take less than a penny dropping to activate their dormant sensory receptors. Every last one could wake up in less than an instant and Salvager--by himself, anyways--didn’t stand a chance against that many. He and Venom had calculated their individual odds earlier that week--just in case either of them ever found themselves in such a situation. After reviewing Shinoda’s system, it had been decided that Venom could reasonably handle six androids at once. Salvager, on the other hand, could only dispatch two without wasting inventory. So, for now, he’d have to maneuver past the dozing horde silently.
He sank below the edge of his hiding spot, folding in a way that he landed gently on his knees. The floor was thrumming with the constant pulse of batteries, the electrical activity bleeding warmth into the tiling, heating his legs. Just how much electricity the androids guzzled up as they slept, Salvager wasn’t sure--he couldn’t even have guessed how much it took to power a prototype android compared to the self-replicated, reconstructed, Starving Silver, or Devoured Men models--and how each one continued to consume so much after seven years of the Tower’s lockdown, he had even less of an idea.
Swallowing with anticipation, Salvager ignited his player board with a sweep of his hand, summoning his transparent blue data screen just beside his right palm.. Shinoda--the Tower’s A.I. system--quickly rolled through his stats--
Valt Aoi

Ignoring the extensive lists, he selected his laser grapnel and--for futility’s sake (in case something went wrong)--one of his fifteen disruptor pistols. At once, Shinoda extracted both tools from its digital database and loaded them into his hands, automatically conjuring the grapnel into his right, as the item’s user preferences had indicated. Sniffing, Salvager removed his magnification glasses, tossed them back into his inventory (by way of his player board), dismissed Shinoda, and lifted the small screen on the back of the grapnel closer to his eyes. Thumbing carefully over the options, he adjusted the laser whip settings to match his earlier decision--Two second intervals, immediate relaunch--and, with a small squeeze of the trigger, a buzzing glow filled the short barrel. Perfect.
Moving quickly but softly, Salvager skirted around the edge of his blacked-out hiding spot and, disruptor gripped tightly in his left fist, swung the tip of the grapnel skyward. He locked the sights to the exposed metal beams of the ceiling and, taking light, swift bounds forward, snapped down the trigger.
A beam of ice-blue light shot from the end, connecting with a steel bar roughly a sixth of the way across the battery farm and instantly beginning to retract. Teeth bared in concentration, Salvager plunged into a full sprint, resisting the tug until, only two yards from the first line of androids, he tucked in his knees and launched into the air.
The laser whip immediately drew in his weight, carrying him a near fifteen feet off the floor, the distance not changing at all even as he dropped into a forward swing, the lolling heads of one hundred and twenty androids blurring beneath him. One! Two--!
The laser cut, detaching from the ceiling beam.
Salvager jerked his right arm forwards, locked the grapnel’s sights--
A second beam shot out, connecting with a new target.
And again, he fell into his swing.
One, two. Release. Catch. One, two. Release. Catch. One, two. Release. Catch. One, two. Release. Catch. One, two. Release.
Over and past the ending edge of the farm, Salvager removed his finger from the trigger and allowed his body to fall, the stagnant Tower wind flaring through his dark hair, tugging at the open edges of his heavy jacket, and furrowing his brow. Midair, he flicked his grapnel to the side, dismissing it back to his inventory, and bent his knees, preparing to land on--
Oh, shoot. It’s a--
His boots hit the loose metal grate with an audible clank--louder than a blood-curdling scream in the silence--followed by an equally alarming echo, and, immediately, he threw himself off it, spun up to his knees, and leveled his pistol at the nearest line of androids. Seven self-replicated, one reconstructed, two Starving Silver variants. His heart thundered like a sledgehammer against his skull and he bit into his own teeth, fighting to restrain his breath. No more noise, no more noise.
He waited for several seconds.
Maybe even a full minute.
Nothing happened.
On the edge of satisfaction, Salvager swallowed down a hard wad of spit in the back of his mouth and slowly--slowly--began treading backwards. He readjusted his aim as he went, hands shaking slightly with the force of his grip, switching the pistol’s tip from the androids to their batteries. An explosion would work better than a laser bullet anyways…
Step after step, he maneuvered backwards, allowing his mind to drift to his next directive… Venom was ahead of him, scouting the safe zone Salvager had located the last time he’d been on Floor 190. They would meet up, proceed forward, and continue towards the top. They’d decided they could pull it off, could reach Floor 193--the Tower’s apex--in two days.
Drawn back into the shadows now, Salvager lowered his pistol, unlocking the strain on his lungs and releasing a short, ragged exhale. Safe, then, he decided. Only a little ways left to--
Sharp, cold fingers--a disjointed metal hand, knobbed and jagged--closed around his shoulder.

FAQs Q1: Can I install this without professional help? Absolutely. Installation is plug-and-play and takes less than 5 minutes.
Q2: Will this void my Tesla warranty? Nope! It connects through factory-safe methods, requiring no drilling or wire cutting.
Q3: How well does it work with voice commands? It integrates perfectly with Siri and Google Assistant, allowing hands-free control.
Q4: Is it compatible with third-party apps? Yes, through CarPlay and Android Auto, you can access Spotify, Waze, WhatsApp, and more.
Q5: What if my Tesla gets a software update? The HUD stays compatible thanks to frequent OTA updates from the manufacturer.

How to Calibrate Your Phone: A Quick Fix Guide for Glitchy Screens & Weird Sensors
Raise your hand if your phone’s touchscreen hates you lately 🙋♂️ Maybe it’s ghost-tapping, your battery dies at 30%, or your compass thinks north is Starbucks. Don’t panic! Let’s talk about how to calibrate your phone like a tech wizard (no magic spells required).
Why Bother Calibrating?
Your phone’s hardware gets ~emotional~ over time. Software updates, drops, or that time you spilled matcha on it can throw sensors out of whack. Learning how to calibrate your phone fixes:
Ghost-tapping drama (when your screen has a mind of its own).
Compass fails (no, the park isn’t that way).
Battery lies (“60%” suddenly becomes 0%… cool).
✨ How to Calibrate Your Phone’s Touchscreen
For Android Users:
Go to Settings > Display > Touch Sensitivity (or similar).
If your brand (looking at you, Samsung) has a “Touchscreen Calibration” tool, use it!
No luck? Download a ~vibey~ app like Touch Screen Calibration (Google Play).
iPhone Folks:
iPhones are low-key stubborn. Try a force restart:
Press Volume Up > Volume Down > Hold Side Button until Apple logo appears.
Still glitchy? Backup + factory reset (weep softly).
Pro Tip: Clean your screen! Pizza grease ≠ calibration tool. 🍕
🌀 Sensor Calibration: Fix Your Phone’s Inner Compass
Android:
Open Google Maps, tap the blue dot (that’s you!).
Hit “Calibrate Compass” and wave your phone like a lightsaber. 🔄
Repeat until Maps stops sending you to Narnia.
iPhone:
Open the Compass app.
Tilt your screen to roll the red ball around the circle (it’s weirdly satisfying).
🔋 Battery Calibration: Stop the “30% to Dead” Betrayal
Drain your battery to 0% (let it die dramatically).
Charge to 100% without unplugging (no TikTok breaks!).
Android Only: Use Battery Calibration apps or reset stats in Settings > Battery.
PSA: Don’t do this monthly—it’s like putting your battery on a rollercoaster. 🎢
💡 Bonus Tips for Calibration Success
Update your OS: Glitchy software = calibration chaos.
Avoid sketchy apps: If it looks like it was made in 2009, skip it.
RTFM: Check your phone’s manual (yes, that thing you never read).

2024 Car Shopping: 10 Features That Are Worth Every Penny
Tumblr media
If you’re planning to shop for a new car in 2024, you’re stepping into a market bursting with innovation, technology, and comfort features that can transform your driving experience. But with so many options, how do you know which ones are truly worth the investment? As tempting as it is to get dazzled by the newest gadgets, focusing on features that add real value to your daily life — both now and in the long run — is key. Let’s dive into the standout car features of 2024 that deserve a spot on your must-have list.
First on the list is advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Safety has always been a priority, but modern ADAS like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking have become incredibly sophisticated. These systems don't just protect you; they also ease the stress of long commutes and highway driving. Investing in a car equipped with a comprehensive ADAS suite means more than just peace of mind — it could mean fewer accidents and lower insurance premiums, too.
Next, we can’t ignore the rise of integrated infotainment systems. Manufacturers like Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai are pushing the envelope with massive touchscreens, intuitive voice controls, and seamless smartphone integration. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now almost expected, but in 2024, many cars offer wireless versions, eliminating the need for messy cables. A responsive, user-friendly infotainment setup enhances every trip, making navigation, communication, and entertainment easier than ever.
Electric and hybrid technology is also dominating buyer conversations this year. Even if you’re not ready to go fully electric, looking for plug-in hybrid options or fuel-efficient gasoline engines with mild hybrid support could save you thousands at the pump over time. Battery ranges have improved significantly, and public charging networks have expanded, making 2024 a prime time to consider greener alternatives without the dreaded range anxiety.
Another often-overlooked yet incredibly valuable feature is a 360-degree camera system. Parking in tight spots, maneuvering through crowded areas, and avoiding unseen obstacles become much easier with a bird’s-eye view of your surroundings. Once you’ve used this feature, it’s hard to imagine driving without it.
Heated and ventilated seats are no longer just luxury perks. In 2024, they are becoming common even in mid-tier vehicles. Whether you're braving icy winters or blazing summers, these seats make a noticeable difference in comfort, proving their worth every single day.
In the realm of comfort, adaptive suspension systems are also gaining traction. These systems adjust the firmness of the ride based on road conditions, driving style, and even your mood if you opt for customizable settings. A smoother, more controlled ride doesn’t just feel better — it can reduce driver fatigue and improve handling in tricky conditions.
Let’s not forget about connected car technology. Real-time software updates, remote start from a smartphone app, and vehicle health monitoring are more than just conveniences; they can extend the life of your car and reduce maintenance headaches. In 2024, staying connected means staying ahead.
When it comes to interiors, look for sustainable materials. Brands are pushing eco-friendly innovations without sacrificing luxury. Vegan leather, recycled plastics, and responsibly sourced wood trims aren’t just good for the environment — they’re durable and stylish too.
Finally, don't overlook the importance of customizable digital instrument clusters. Instead of traditional dials, you can now tailor your dashboard to show exactly the information you want, from navigation to performance stats, ensuring a driving experience that feels uniquely yours. click here
Choosing the right features is all about prioritizing what will genuinely enhance your daily drives. In 2024, the best investments are the ones that blend safety, comfort, convenience, and a little bit of future-proofing into every mile you travel.

This was a welcome addition, but also limited in how useful it actually was. In the March 2024 update for Pixel phones, though, this…

The great Android vs Apple debate.
For years there has always been a debate on whether Apple or Android is best. It appears that a lot of people firmly sit in either camp. Some are even fanatical in their viewpoints.
You have people in the Android camp who will say those who prefer Apple, do not appreciate tech or are showing off or are stupid, hooked by marketing and brand image. There are people who will go as far as to even call anyone who owns an iPhone an ‘apple wanker.’
Then you have those in the Apple camp that may brand someone who owns an Android phone ‘poor’ or jealous.
Those statements are of course utterly ridiculous. These days the price of a flagship Android is on par with that of an iPhone if not more. Apple owners are not inherently trying to show off. Whilst Apple is somewhat of a status symbol people have a preference for Apple for a variety of reasons, simplicity, optimisation, convenience if friends and family all use iPhone and some just genuinely prefer Apple products.
I have bounced back and forth between both Android and Apple devices over the last 12 or so years. I don’t really have a strong opinion on either OS. However, I have been drawn back to Apple and I have come full circle. Here is how I got back here.
My first iPhone I ever had was the iPhone4 and I loved it. Before that I had BlackBerry- remember those?! I had my phone for just over a year and Apple released an update that bricked the phone. They couldn’t undo the update and it was out of warranty. Determined to prove that Apple was overrated and I switched to Android.
I started off with a Sony Xperia. It was budget, but popular amongst my age at the time and a nice looking phone. It survived being dropped in a bucket of water! Then eventually it started freezing, crashing, lagging to the point of being unusable. I was told I would have a better experience with a flagship Samsung.
I bought one and after 18 months of ownership the above issues happened again. Then I missed having an iPhone. I saved up for months and then I went and bought the iPhone 8. 6 years I had that phone for and it was perfect aside from the battery life. It only had issues during the last 6 months I owned it. I upgraded to the iPhone 12 and was left disappointed. It did not feel like much of an upgrade and it was a bit of a lemon.
I could not justify buying another £800+ phone so soon.I bought a mid range Samsung. I liked it. The design was super nice, camera fine. At the time I preferred it to my iPhone 12. I would go as far as to say it was better. Then 2 years later the security updates were cut short unexpectedly. Those Android software issues I mentioned earlier started rearing their ugly heads. I upgraded to the newer model and Samsung took a really nice mid range phone and destroyed it. The new design was chunky, clunky, the camera was worse, the hardware was horrible. One UI was buggy from day one. I should have returned it.
I gave up on Samsung and some people may say well you can’t compare the A range to the S range or A range to iPhone. Let’s be real here - not everyone can afford a flagship device or can justify buying something like the S25 Ultra. Most people don’t need it. The stats of the A range are more than suitable for most and the gap between the A and S range is ever tighter.
I then tried Honor and MagicOS was so much nicer than One UI. Not only that, the screen knocked anything else out of the park as did the battery and fast charging. It also did not develop any of the Android issues I mentioned before. It did sadly, have other issues with cellular and data connectivity, software support and poor camera. These issues were too much of a problem.
I dug my iPhone 12 out and it handled iOS 18 easily and as much as I couldn’t tolerate the small screen I found myself pining for Apple again.
I narrowed it down to 2 choices the Google Pixel 9 and the iPhone 16. I deliberated for days, posed the question on Reddit only to be continually told to buy a Samsung which was not only out of my budget but not what I wanted. I found numerous issues reported with the Pixel 9 and it’s frequently reported that the Tensor chip is very underwhelming. I also couldn’t use my HUAWEI watch with it.
As much as my Android experience had been poor my iPhone experience had been a disappointment at times too. I then discovered I could delete any stock iOS apps I didn’t want and install the Android/Google ones I did want including Google Photos. I customised my phone to give me the best of both worlds.
I also realised that any Apple device I have ever owned has far outlived anything else and has also (minus a couple of exceptions) been far less problematic than Android.
So I made my decision and I sit here typing this on my iPhone15 Plus with no regrets at all.
Whilst, not everyone shares my opinion or experience. People will have preference either way. Both have their pros and cons and it’s totally okay whichever camp you sit in. It’s only a phone after all. It’s not that deep.
I do however think I am starting to appreciate what Apple does well, its reliability, longevity and resale value are things I under appreciated previously. I may well end up an Android user in the future but I am back in the Apple camp….for now.

So, you’re eyeing the Garmin Fenix 8, huh? Maybe you’ve heard the buzz. Or maybe you’re just in desperate need of a fitness watch that can keep up with your shocking schedule. Well, buckle up, because we're diving deep into this beast of a smartwatch. Spoiler: it’s got more features than your Netflix queue. Performance: Does the Garmin Fenix 8 Deliver? Alright, let’s talk performance. When it comes to sheer processing power, the Garmin Fenix 8 doesn't disappoint. It’s like they strapped a mini supercomputer on your wrist. Fast, responsive, and reliable—those are the key vibes here. The navigation through menus is snappy, and there’s virtually no lag when switching between features. Do you want to go from tracking your heart rate to checking your notifications? It’s a smooth ride. Sensors on Steroids: The Fenix 8’s sensors are top-notch, pulling in data faster than you can say "VO2 max." Whether it’s monitoring your altitude during a hike or checking your pulse mid-sprint, this watch keeps up. The heart rate monitor, in particular, has improved accuracy over previous models, which is a big deal for those who like their data dialed to the decimal. Battery Life: Garmin has listened to the fans here. The battery life on the Fenix 8 is a standout feature, no doubt about it. In smartwatch mode, it can last for weeks. Throw in some heavy GPS use, and you’re still looking at several days of juice. And if you’ve ever used GPS tracking on a run, you know how fast that usually drains a watch. Fenix 8? Barely breaks a sweat. Plus, the solar charging option? Game changer for those long treks where an outlet is nowhere in sight. User Experience: A Learning Curve, But Worth It Now, let’s get real about the user experience. If you’re new to Garmin or even just smartwatches in general, the Fenix 8 can feel like jumping into the deep end without a life jacket. There are a ton of features, buttons, and menus, and it can feel a bit overwhelming at first. Not gonna lie, there’s a learning curve. Interface and Usability: Garmin’s interface has always been a bit of a mixed bag. It’s powerful but not always the most intuitive. The good news is, once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly rewarding. Think of it like learning to drive a stick shift—tricky at first, but once you get it, it’s smooth sailing. And for those who’ve used previous Fenix models, the interface tweaks in the Fenix 8 will feel like familiar territory with a few welcome surprises. Customization Galore: One thing users will love is the level of customization. Widgets, watch faces, data fields—you name it, you can tweak it. Want your screen to show your heart rate, altitude, and steps all at once? Go for it. Prefer a minimalist display with just the basics? Easy fix. The Garmin Connect app also plays nicely with the watch, making it super simple to customize settings or deep-dive into your stats post-workout. Notifications and Smart Features: When it comes to smart features, Garmin isn’t exactly Apple or Samsung, but it holds its own. You’ll get notifications for texts, calls, and apps right on your wrist. You can even reply with preset messages if you’re paired with an Android device. Music controls, weather updates, and Garmin Pay add to the convenience factor. Not the main selling points, but nice to have. What’s New with the Garmin Fenix 8? If you’ve seen the Fenix 7, you might be wondering, “What’s different here?” Good question, my friend. Garmin has seriously upped their game this time around. Here’s a rundown: amazing Battery Life: You know that feeling when your watch dies right in the middle of a long run? Yeah, that sucks. Garmin gets it. The Fenix 8 has battery life that goes on like the Energizer Bunny. We’re talking days—yes, DAYS—even if you’re constantly using GPS. Display Glow-Up: The screen is brighter, sharper, and way more responsive. It’s almost like they slapped a mini HD TV on your wrist. Perfect for checking your stats mid-workout without squinting like you’re reading fine print.
Health Metrics Galore: Sleep, stress, heart rate, hydration, oxygen levels, steps, calories burned—Garmin didn’t miss a beat. If you want to track it, Fenix 8 probably has a sensor for it. It’s your trainer, but without the judgment when you skip leg day. The Fitness Features: More Than Just Steps Let’s not kid ourselves; there are tons of fitness watches out there. What sets the Garmin Fenix 8 apart? For one, it’s got modes for activities you didn’t even know existed. Trail running in the Rockies? Check. Kayaking down a raging river? You bet. Sitting on the couch? Well, it’ll still count your steps, so... kind of. Multi-GNSS Support: GPS, GLONASS, Galileo—if it sounds like a high school science class, it’s probably in this watch. This means you’re getting more accurate tracking, whether you’re hiking deep in the woods or navigating a concrete jungle. Topographic Maps and Ski Maps: Built-in maps mean you’re less likely to get lost on your next adventure. And yes, it’s got maps for skiing too. So, if you’re tearing up the slopes, this thing’s got you covered. Training Features: Ever heard of PacePro? It’s like having a coach in your ear, keeping you on target with your race pace. And then there’s ClimbPro for those gnarly hill climbs, helping you pace yourself so you don’t bonk halfway up. The Look: Rugged Yet Stylish Here’s the thing: this watch looks like it could survive the apocalypse. It’s got that rugged, tough-as-nails vibe, but Garmin has made it sleek enough that it doesn’t look out of place at a dinner party. Options for different bands and materials (think titanium and sapphire) mean you can style it to your heart’s content. And yes, it’s waterproof. So go ahead, dive into the pool or get caught in a downpour. The Fenix 8 won’t flinch. What’s the Catch? Now, let’s keep it real. This watch isn’t cheap. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly fitness tracker, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you’re after top-tier features and don’t mind dropping some serious cash, the Garmin Fenix 8 is worth every penny. The interface can be a bit much at first—like trying to fly a plane when all you’ve driven is a bicycle—but once you get the hang of it, it’s smooth sailing. Garmin Fenix 8 vs. The Competition: How Does It Stack Up? Alright, you’re sold on the idea of a high-end smartwatch, but the market's full of flashy contenders. So how does the Garmin Fenix 8 stack up against its main rivals? Let’s pit it against the likes of the Apple Watch Ultra, Suunto 9 Peak Pro, and the Coros Vertix 2 to see who comes out on top. Garmin Fenix 8 vs. Apple Watch Ultra First up, is the Apple Watch Ultra. This one’s a no-brainer if you’re deep in the Apple ecosystem. Seamless integration with iPhone, AirPods, and all that jazz. But when it comes to hardcore fitness features, the Fenix 8 pulls ahead. Battery Life: The Fenix 8 obliterates the Apple Watch Ultra in battery life. We’re talking days versus hours. If you’re the type who hates constant charging, Garmin’s got you covered. Fitness and Tracking: Apple Watch Ultra offers some serious tracking features, but it leans more toward lifestyle than hardcore athletes. The Fenix 8, on the other hand, is built for those who need every ounce of data from every run, hike or swim. Multisport modes, advanced metrics, and those rugged good looks? Garmin’s the champ here. Usability and Interface: Apple’s UI is as smooth and sleek as you’d expect, and it feels more intuitive out of the box. Garmin's interface isn’t as flashy, but once you get the hang of it, it’s packed with customizability. And if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t want Siri bugging you mid-run, Fenix 8 keeps the focus purely on performance. Garmin Fenix 8 vs. Suunto 9 Peak Pro Moving on to the Suunto 9 Peak Pro, another big name in the adventure watch scene. Suunto’s known for its clean, simple UI and great battery life, but let's see where it stands. Design and Build: Both watches sport a rugged, outdoorsy look, but the Suunto leans more minimalist.
If sleek and subtle is your thing, the Suunto 9 Peak Pro has that Scandinavian design flair. The Fenix 8, though, screams "ready for anything" with its beefier build and customizable bands. Tracking Features: Garmin’s got more depth in activity tracking. Suunto does well with the basics and has a strong showing in endurance sports, but it lacks some of the advanced features Garmin packs in—like PacePro and ClimbPro. Plus, Garmin's map features are a big step up from what Suunto offers, especially if you're venturing off the beaten path. Battery and Performance: Both are solid here. Suunto prides itself on battery life, but Garmin’s solar charging and power management modes give it the edge, especially on those extended adventures where recharging isn’t an option. Garmin Fenix 8 vs. Coros Vertix 2 Last but not least, let’s talk Coros Vertix 2. Coros is all about that ultra-endurance life, and the Vertix 2 has been giving Garmin a run for its money in recent years. Advanced Metrics and Usability: Garmin still leads when it comes to depth and variety of fitness metrics. Coros offers a simpler, more straightforward experience with fewer bells and whistles, which some might prefer if they’re all about efficiency. But if you’re a data nerd who loves diving deep into analytics, Garmin’s got the upper hand. Battery Life: The Vertix 2 is no slouch—this thing can last up to 60 days in regular use, which is wild. Garmin’s no pushover with its battery life, especially with solar charging, but if battery life is the absolute top priority, Coros might just edge it out. Navigation and Mapping: Both watches offer impressive navigation tools, but Garmin’s topographic and ski maps make it a more versatile option for explorers. Coros has solid GPS accuracy and multi-GNSS support, but Garmin’s user interface and the way it presents navigation data are a touch more refined. Is the Garmin Fenix 8 Worth It? If you’re the kind of person who wants all the data, all the time, this is your match made in tech heaven. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just someone who loves the latest gadgets, the Garmin Fenix 8 delivers on almost every front. It’s powerful, packed with features, and, honestly, just fun to use. So, is the Garmin Fenix 8 a must-buy? If you’re serious about your fitness game—or just want to look like you are—it’s a strong contender. Don’t just take my word for it. Get out there and test it yourself. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll find it’s the only companion you need on your next adventure.

Oura Ring 4 Review:
The smart ring to rule them all
Starting at $349, the Oura Ring 4 builds upon its already excellent predecessor with a more comfortable design, more accurate sensors, and longer battery life. It arrives alongside a redesigned and more feature-rich companion app that makes it easy to understand all of the health and wellness data the smart ring collects. While you’re still better off with a wrist-based fitness tracker like the $159.95 Fitbit Charge 6 or a smartwatch like the $399 Apple Watch Series 10 for detailed exercise tracking, the Oura Ring 4 gathers enough metrics to give you a complete understanding of your holistic health, making it our Editors’ Choice winner for smart rings. The Oura Ring 4 is an app-connected smart ring that tracks the details of your activity and sleep from its position on your finger. Specifically, it has red and green infrared LEDs to measure blood oxygen, heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate, as well as skin temperature sensors and an accelerometer. It can track 40 different types of exercises, your movement throughout the day, your sleep duration and stages, as well as your stress levels. You can view any of the data it captures via the Oura app on Android or iOS. The app also analyzes your individual metrics to offer holistic scores for readiness, sleep, and activity level recommendations for the day.At $349, the Oura Ring 4 costs $50 more than its predecessor but still undercuts its most high-profile competitor, the Android-only $399.99 Samsung Galaxy Ring. Oura offers some basic stats for free, but you’ll need a membership to access the majority of the app’s features and insights and make the most of the ring. Oura's membership costs $5.99 monthly or $69.99 annually after a one-month free trial. While it costs more up front, one benefit of the Galaxy Ring is that it does not require a monthly fee to access any of the features in its companion app.The Oura Ring 4 is available in 12 sizes (4 through 15), an expanded range from the previous generation, which came in sizes 6 through 13. The Galaxy Ring comes in sizes 5 through 13. You can get a sizing kit from Oura when ordering, and the company recommends one even for users of past models.Oura is only offering the Ring 4 in the Horizon shape with a fully rounded exterior, not the Heritage shape with a flattened top from the last generation. Ring 4 buyers get a choice of six colors: black, brushed silver, gold, rose gold, silver, or stealth (dark gray). Black and silver come at the base $349 price, brushed silver and stealth cost $399, and gold and rose gold cost $499. I tested a silver model in size 14 for this review. In terms of hardware, the Oura Ring 4 improves on its predecessor by flattening the interior sensor bumps customary in other smart rings for a more comfortable fit. The refined sensor tech also purportedly allows the ring to continually look for the best pathways to gather data and accommodate for variations if it rotates on your finger throughout the day or night.According to Oura, the Ring 4 can find 18 different pathways for data collection, up from eight in the last model. The better pathfinding is meant to help remove deviations and gaps in daytime and nighttime heart rate readings for improved accuracy. This new architecture also requires less power than the last generation, thereby improving battery life.
